I bought the GFX 100S almost two years ago, and I am as excited today about it as the day I first got it. I'm five lenses deep and I cannot imagine ever having a greater need than this system. Great final review.

I really appreciate this review. My 100S is arriving tomorrow. I hesitated between the 100S and the 50S Ml II. The low light and better autofocus as well as the 25::64 crop at 50MB is what made the decision.
I have been using medium format cameras since the early 1960s. Mostly Rolleiflex. Then Yashicamat. ( great camera btw). I used 35 mm as well. Pentax plus Olympus.
In the 1970s I started using Pentax 67 and then Pentax 645. I eventually ended up with an Arca Swiss medium format view camera shooting 67, 68, and 69.
I also used various canon digital cameras and some olympus digital.
Nothing digital felt like a real camera until I started using the crop sensor fujis.
But when the GFX 50S came along, it felt like my Pentax 67 was re- born as a digital camera. It worked the way I expected snd wanted it to.
The point of all this is to say that I know a really do know a lot about medium format and I can see you are absolutely right about the 100S.
And Fuji had actually been working on this a long long time. They have made many many film medium format cameras. They did lenses for Hasselblad; they made an excellent Mamiya RX, RZ competitor. The Fuji 68. It was great but heavy.
The 100S is so good because they have some much practice and just the right focus on the user /photographer.
Thanks for this review. I am certain you are definitely right.
Personally, I want Fuji to make a micro 43 camera with a 20MB sensor. And XT-3 style controls and menus.
    Thanks again.

To me there's a difference between expensive and a lot of money - one most people don't appreciate. This is a lot of money, but it's cheap. I'm glad you like it, because I place immense value on your opinion. It's going to take me a long time, but I'm saving up for one (or whatever the new version is by then). I'd much rather have this than a new car.

Great review Ken! I have been shooting with the 50s for several years and anxiously awaiting for the 100s which I ordered 3 weeks ago. I am considering replacing my X-T3’s which I use for photojournalism... is the shutter lag on the 100s much better than the 50s... do you think it is responsive enough for wedding photojournalism, or upgrade my X-T3’s to X-T4?

Great review! I'm still trying to wrap my head around the fact that Fujifilm would release a camera that is better and cheaper than their flagship model the GFX100. If I had bought the GFX 100 a year ago I would be kinda upset right now at the price of this new model though I still like the look and additional customizable buttons of the GFX100.

Hi Ken sorry if this is a bit out of nowhere. I just bought a used XT-1 and everything is working fine except my front command dial. It still works but then keeps getting stucked after a few turns. From what I've read, that's maybe because some dirt got stucked in there. A suggested solution would be to spray an electronic contact cleaner on the dial. I don't mind spending some bucks on the cleaner(even if it doesn't work). But do you think this could harm my camera body at any chance? 😢 I really don't know who else to ask Ken. Would really really appreciate your reply 🙏

Thanks a lot for the review... as always stellar! I have ordered this camera and as you have mentioned this is my FIRST Fujifilm camera. I have purchased two extra batteries, and the dual battery charger. What is a PITA is that in order to get BOTH batteries to charge simultaneously in rapid fashion I had to order a PD (Power Delivery) wall charger with 30 watt capability that supports the PD protocol so as to support MY standards for a three, or more, battery work flow. My total outflow for the charging system is about $100.
Having come originally from 4x5 I have been waiting for this camera and the power supply issue is just a small speed bump. They could have told me up front what to get and made it easier. I am not going to whine about it because when you consider the new 87mm filters that I have to buy to support the GF 45-100mm lens, it is not a major issue to support my art! Once again, thanks for the review. YOU planted the seed that finally got me to ordering the 100s...... thanks.

The 100 has features that that 100s does not. For example you can plug the 100 into to wall outlet for power which is great for product work. You can plug the camera into the wall and monitor and you don't have to worry about changing batteries. the 100 has a specialized EVF that articulates and is also removable. Both cameras have the exact same Sony sensor so the image quality will be identical.

I have been trying to find this camera and found out that while there are many Fujifilm X dealers, there are no GFX dealers in the state in which I live. One of the things I was told at a camera store is that if they ordered one, it would take at least 5 months, if not more to receive the item and that I would have to pay full MSRP in advance as opposed to just a deposit. I asked why that was and was informed that Fujifilm told the camera store that any GFX 100s that's ordered is non-returnable. If this doesn't change, this policy would lock out many photographers who would like to switch systems from either Canon, Nikon or Sony. Imagine what this would be like if you sold your current system to pay for this camera and then had to wait without the use of a camera for 5 months or more.

I basically say, it's a bit like shooting RAW photos vs jpeg. You can't really compare them based on "final output" (kind of like Prores 4.22 or H.265 because the magic is what you can do to "get" to that final image. I played around with the GFX next to the Komodo in poor/indoor light (all I had at the moment) and the Red produced a really nice image between highlights and shadows. Yes but the 100mp let’s you zoom in CLOSE with a quick swipe of the thumb. The 3.7 mega dot is not a problem. If anything the focus peaking pixels need to be a little more sensitive because the pixel level contrast on 100 mp is much more likely to experience diffraction blur relative to a lower mp sensor. The pixels fail to light up sometimes due to this.

Great review as usual. I am thankful that they did not mess with the rear screen and it’s movements (a non XT4 screen). I perhaps would have liked a couple more customizable buttons. The tilting EVF is nice, but I must confess I use it little on the 100. I am wondering what to do with the 100 (sell it and get a second 100s body as back up second lens body perhaps?) and the 50R that I want to keep but thinking of converting to a monochrome camera. I guess all good problems to have.

I think I will do great with only two or three prime lenses for a Fuji GFX camera, I will use it for mostly landscape, arcitecture and nearly everything else, the 45mm is a no-brainer, but you write that the 110mm are not good for landscapes !?? How are the 30mm ? Have you tried the Hasselblad Macro Planar 120mm 4.0 on a digital camera, I still have this lens which are great on analog film, so if I can use it on a digital camera it will be very nice :)
I think that the GFX100S is one of the very best digital cameras ever made and I would have bought it for $6000, but I will not becuase I do not think the EVF is good enough to me, I wish for 9.4Mp like in some other new cameras, I would also have liked the Fuji GFX100S to have dials for shutterspeed and ISO, so maybe if a future Fuji GFX100R have those options, I will be one of the first to buy it ! Great 44x33mm sensor made by SONY ! ;) By the way it have never been a medium format which start at 60x45mm :) Thanx for the review.

....as a portrait photographer, I care about only one thing: Eye Auto-focus. Eye tracking appears to be fairly good with the 100S, but I am concerned about accuracy of focus on the human iris (eye-ball) not eyelashes. Did you test the camera for critical focus --success rate? All of those amazing features aren't worth a hill of beans without a high rate of successful eye focus -- for portrait sessions. This is a neglected topic, and it's important to many people. Is anyone listening?

@@kathodosdotcom.... I just saw Dustin Abbott's portrait test showing "eyelash autofocus" -- this is what I'm talking about -- front focus errors. You are hinting at a settings correction, so could you please be specific about the "small enough AF POINT"? In a real-world portrait session, what would that be? And have you tested it? For me, this is a deal-breaker in purchasing the camera. It's important! ....many thanks.

Ken - I know you're smitten with the Fuji GFX50R and now you're saying the GFX100S is better. You've already got the GFX 100, so what's the difference other than handling?
Compared to an XT-4, the RAW files of GFX 50R are much larger and, of course, the GFX100S files are larger again. Most of us don't have state of the art MAc's etc. to deal with this problem of bloated file sizes. Would you care to comment to us on this aspect - because upgrading computer power capable of dealing with hi-res images is a major issue for amateur photographers.
