Sequels exist in every film genre…..stop trying to create a false narrative. As Jack mentions, the reality is that animated films have not performed as well after Covid with a few exceptions. And who can blame them for giving the people what they want through sequels?

I'm personally not opposed to sequels. If there are more stories to be told, and more potential to be tapped into, then I say go for it. And some of these movies I'm very much looking forward to.
That being said, Disney should still invest in original IP and stories, It's what got them started and they should still be willing to take risks with them in the hopes that they may fight their footing in the long run.

I think there's another aspect here. If you've already paid for a Disney plus subscription and know that they'll be on there within a few months, why pay out for potentially expensive cinema/movie theatre visit once tickets, snacks and anything else is taken into account. Given the increasing price of Disney plus, cutting out trips to the cinema is one way to fund it.

    • @0dylan

I think Disney needs to wait a year before releasing movies on Disney plus. Put it in theaters, then at 6 months sell Blu rays, and then after a year release it on Disney plus. This would probably improve box office returns.

Disney taught it's fans that they only have to wait a few months to see the movies on the Disney+ service they're paying each month for instead of the expense and hassle of going to the movies.
In the past Disney sequels were typically direct to video releases. Streaming is the modern equivalent of DTV. It's hard to say how many of these will actually get theatrical releases.

Toy Story 5 could show Sid Phillips unveiling the toys' living secret to the world after he learned a lesson as well as puppets and a toy factory, Frozen III could show Elsa returning to Arendelle on her own and learning to dance as Kristoff and Anna marry each other and Spring being celebrated throughout the fictional Norwegian kingdom and the entire fjord, Inside Out 2 could show the emotions entering the real world as well as Riley and Jordan becoming a couple since it's about to show new emotions and Riley's new home finally showing all the furniture due to its delayal in the first film, Zootopia 2 may show Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde on a new perspective and having kids and Moana 2 may afford new exotic paradises and outfits related to Hawaii for the ancient Polynesians. Time for Anna and Elsa to be included on the Disney Princess line with a modern render unless the Disney Queen line is made; they can be transferred there with Ariel so Melody can take her place and Amaya can acquire the line first.

Original animations will soon be seen as an investment with an expected loss, with the hope that it gathers momentum as a franchise once it hits streaming platforms. This then allows sequels for the same franchise to become box office successes as people are invested in the characters. So I think the mindset of Disney/Universal will change and there will almost be an acceptance that originals will make a loss with the hope they see a more significant return in future sequels.

It's a bandaid for an internal issue that's been simmering ever since John Lassiter was given the boot. Quantity over quality is a dangerous game, Disney, don't play it again.
(Seriously, Toy Story 3 & 4 were a satisfying conclusion to the franchise--and 4 was only "needed" because of the whole "What happened to Bo Peep?" mystery. At this point, it's like how every single Kirk-era Star Trek movie was marketed as "THE FINAL VOYAGE!!!" 😂)

For me I feel like The Walt Disney Company tried doing original stories with both Walt Disney Animation Studios and Pixar Animation Studios but within the last few years they just haven't been performing well because fans just aren't familiar with it because it's not part of an existing IP within their studios. Even if people want original movies. Elemental didn't do too well in it's first week and it was original and only did better after good word of mouth, that and Walt Disney Pictures and Pixar didn't advertise it enough. That's the reason why it's risky to put out original animated films. Then you have fans complaining about too many sequels, when they made the most about of money at the box office because it's part of a franchise. It's hard to pinpoint exactly what went wrong with these original films. Strange World from Walt Disney Animation Studios was a dud due to it's lack of advertising and it's boring plot. No villain at all and no songs in sight. It was also a big step for the studio as it was the first feature to incorporate an openly gay character, something Walt Disney Animation Studios had never done before. I for one was just bored by it. Then Lightyear did poor numbers in 2022 due to audience confusion on replacing Tim Allen for the voice of Buzz with Chris Evans. A lot of people didn't understand the film was about the astronaut and not the toy. It also featured the first same-sex kiss from buzz's friend which was a first for Pixar, incorporating ideas from the LGBTQ+ community. I personally enjoyed the film, but it just didn't do well at all and it went to Disney+ not long after it's theatrical run. Overall, as long as there is more story too tell, then I think sequels will keep coming from both studios because they make the most money compared to original films not part of an existing franchise. And I think The Walt Disney Company needs a few hits after several unfortunate blows in 2023 with Walt Disney Pictures, Walt Disney Animation Studios, Pixar Animation Studios and Marvel Studios not performing too well for their films. I'm still waiting on Incredibles 3. It's been 6 years and no news on it. I hope it's not 2032 before we get that movie. Sequels might be what this company needs to bring in better box office performance.

They don’t have many Disney princes and princess they imagine themselves as being besides Moana and Frozen characters. I just feel they are losing the essence of what Disney is, the nostalgia that we feel when entering the parks or re-watching shows and seeing those characters again. To me it just feels like a cash grab and an abuse of power. They are over producing movies instead of just slowing down, making one good solid movie, and reinvesting the money into the parks with the IP they create.

Song of the South. James Baskett earned an Honary Academy Award for his efforts. The first black person to earn an Academy Award and the last adult actor to earn an Honary Academy Award for a single performance. Unfortunately, his performance is lost to history because Disney has decided to "cancel" the film and any reference of it, e.g. Splash Mountain. A shame.

I really want Zootopia to excel and succeed as one of the best things Disney has ever made. It’ll be awfully difficult with Toy Story 5 and Frozen 3 releasing the year after but as a still fresh franchise, Zootopia has limitless potential in becoming a franchise that spans generations with stories besides the ones with Nick and Judy but also side characters, new characters and even places outside the city of Zootopia.
But the question is, will Disney realize that kind of potential? Probably not.

Disney makes an original movie these days - maybe 1 trailer and maybe some hype the week before it comes out.
Disney makes a sequel - nonstop mentioning it for weeks until it comes out.
The issue is the way they market their films - it's lazy, sequels market themselves as we already know the property... New stuff needs more push but they just don't want to invest in that.

I think Inside Out 2 will be a good test for whether sequels have the power to help Disney recover from their box office woes. But I don't think the argument is really about sequels vs.original stories--it's about good writing and high production values versus sloppy, lazy writing and poor production values. I'll be honest; Elio doesn't interest me much--not because it's a new IP, but because it looks so bland. Nimona, on the other hand, looked interesting long before I actually watched. 😊

They take too long to come out with a sequel. When a movie is really good and there’s potential for more, it’s years when they come out. ie. “The Incredibles, Inside out, Monsters Inc” ( still waiting for the second one). We don’t need more Toy Story sequels or Frozen. It gets old the more sequels they make. You can’t compete with Wicked 💚

Because Toy Story is very much orientated and aimed at boys while it is also made for girls from a slight perspective with Barbbie and Woodies love cowboy girl. However, Frozen 3 is made for girls mostly indefinitely while also slightly aiming at boys. With both these movies being released two separate years or two diffirent times of the year I can see them succeeding in terms of pulling both male and female kid audience and making 1 billion at the box office. This will then secure and up the finances of the Walt Disney Company.

Apart from the "it will appear on disney+" some of the biggest factors holding back original IP are most likely.....is the poster/trailing intriguing, is the concept intriguing, does the potential audience grasp the idea.....Moana (princess) won where Wish failed (Wish looked a bit too much like Tangled without the Braid styling where Moana had a very fresh setting never done before by Disney). Turning Red and Elio which were 2 excellent movies had some trouble communicating their concept on top of being dumped straightaway on Disney+. For my book those 2 were some of the best recent offerings. Zootopia did an excellent job of getting it's concept across and won all across the board, where Strange World left things maybe somewhat too vague? Elementals despite being quite good, at first glance looked like PIXAR doing it's Pixar standard Toys/planes/Cars/Emotions/Fish/Bugs/ploy once too many - double since the Elements were stand-ins for a certain set of Emotions as well. Encanto intrigued enough with a fresh setting and a musical hook to draw in the crowds and become a phenomenon. Raya was still way better than it's box office faith, but did come too soon on the heels of the live action Mulan i think. More girl action from Asia.
If you taken an IP that's already popular, you get a certain inbuilt safe part of the audience......but in the end (even with Marvel) fatigues will set in. I guess they can go the whole round with four seasons in Frozen....but uhm better come up with some real character development for them all

I will answer with a big, fat, meaty, juicy...maybe? The truth of the matter is that box office tendencies have changed drastically thanks to the pandemic to the point where one minute a big legacy IP film breaks records while another just flat out bombs. The fact that in 2023 we had so many tent pole releases, perhaps the biggest in years, that just flopped shows that audience expectations are all over the place.
The main reason Barbie and Oppenheimer were big hits because of the unintentional synergy created by the Internet through memes, thus the audience made it into a big event that everyone had to watch.
So these sequels can either bring audiences back if they are treated like big, don't miss events, or again flop and make people say "I'll wait till it hits streaming". That's a reality many movies are facing now, especially animated films.

I personally have very little opinion about how someone chooses to live their life as it is their choice. But as a father, I do not appreciate anyone trying to take the parent away from me and say that they know what’s best for my son. If you consider your Disney+ subscription a sunk cost, you can see any Disney release for free as long as you wait a few months. It was all about family, and having pride in their work. Give the people all that you can give them and they’ll come back for more, was Walt’s philosophy….

Doing these sequels now can help them relearn what made people fall in love with their animated movies in the first place or even teach the newer generation at disney as I'm sure there's plenty of new faces there too. If I see the team behind Moana 2, I don't know if it will make the 1 billion mark... People want quality 😅

I am only interested in Inside out 2.
I haven't even watched the first Moana actually.
Also the original kids from Frozen in 2013 are not the kids anymore in the age to watch a part 3.
