Honestly... If Callaghan had snapped at Hiro saying "that was his mistake" only for a look of grief to go across his face, showing he isn't just heartless, before going right back to being angry and hateful, it would actually work. Because now instead of saying that as a sign of apathy towards Tadashi, he's saying it as form of denial.

I hate the fact that Callaghan just stole Hiro's invention for his revenge. Like... what did he do before Hiro came to the college? Did he plan anything? Or nothing? Why did he use other people's inventions for HIS revenge? Isn't he a world-renowned scientist? Why doesn't he invent his own creation to fulfill his revenge?
Did he come up with this revenge plan after he met Hiro? Or before? When did the accident happen and when exactly did he decide to carry out his evil plan? And as Aldone mentioned, his personality completely changed from a caring good professor to a heartless evil revenger. Callaghan's story arc is so sloppy and unexecuted, in my opinion.

Just imagine if the movie went like this:
They find out Callaghan is the villain and instead of delivering that AWFUL line about Tadashi he said: "It's all HIS fault, and now I've lost 2 sons because of his mistakes!" Or something like that.
By that making the other rich guy the main villain who started the fire to steal the bots but it ended bad so he had to run out of there instead, with Callaghan in the building protecting himself with the bots, and of course Tadashi dying trying to rescue him, so then we have Callaghan blind by rage doing ANYTHING to destroy the other dude life, the rich guy who has ruined 2 people life thus making him a second villain and Hiro trying to stop Callaghan from becoming a murderer.

I just feel the reveal of Callaghan as Yokai was kind of lame. I do like the message and antithesis between him and Hiro about how to handle grief. But it also makes no sense as to why he’s trying to kill his students and Hiro when they have done nothing to deserve it. It serves no purpose to his goal to kill them. And given how Tadashi was his favorite student, it makes no sense as to why he’d just be so apathetic to his death. I fully get the stuff with Krei but everything else is just kind of weird. It feels like two different characters.

the guy's in prison but I'm assuming that isn't as bad as the grief he had when he thought his daughter was dead so yeah bit weird I still feel to this day Kray should have been the one who got sucked into the portal in the climax which makes it even more noble of Hiro following Tadashi's words and helping him despite his flaws.

@@spencerreid2086 Nowhere in the film or show does it confirm that he did. Hiro at one point states Yokai started the fire, but Yokai never gave any idication that he did. Hiro likely assumed Yokai wanted to steal his microbots and used the fire as a distraction. In the flashback, Callaghan said he used the microbots to save himself, but it's never explicitly said he started the fire. Weird how Hiro brings up the idea that the fire was started deliberately, but it's never followed up on if it was an accident or not.
But make no mistake, Callaghan did endanger his students (I'd go as far as saying he tried to kill them) on several ocassions. The fire just wasn't one of those confirmed situations.

Literally a single line change would've saved Callahan's whole character and made him a more believable villain - changing "That was his mistake!" to be something like "And that's another child I've lost because of HIM!"
Would've perfectly illustrated Callahan's grief and obsession, reaffirmed that he still deeply cared about and was still mourning Tadashi's death, and made his actions explainable with the flawed logic you'd EXPECT a villain like him to have. It works out perfectly with what they already wanted to illustrate his grief as - destroy the person he believed is responsible for not only the death of his daughter, but also took away the person he bonded with as a surrogate son. This movie was almost great, but fell completely on its face because of that one line.

The one Disney twist villain I've never understood the hate for is Bellwether from Zootopia. That film is a neo-noir mystery film, so not knowing who the culprit is is essentially a must. Also, there are quite a few hints of her true nature that, although easy to miss, become far more noticeable the second time around.

    • @yay29823
      @yay29823 7 месяцев назад +42

I don't think people hate her for being a twist villain, but rather a twist villain with little to no clues. Yeah, I don't think there are noticeable clues that she's the villains, if there are clues at all, even on a second watch

    • @PuzzlePottage1390
      @PuzzlePottage1390 7 месяцев назад +56

@@yay29823 As an avid fan of murder mysteries, I agree with you that the twist wasn't handled nearly as well as it could have been. However, I wouldn't go so far as to say that there weren't any clues for the viewer to pick up on.
      - Bellwether repeatedly talks about how all of the 'little guys need to stick together', constantly trying to separate animals such as herself and Judy from those she deems inferior. At first it appears as though she's literally talking about small, overlooked animals, but upon the revelation that she's the mastermind behind the conspiracy to turn predators savage, her words take on a more sinister meaning. Bellwether's desire for all the 'unappreciated little guys' to unite against a common enemy is why she's particularly supportive of a random little farm rabbit becoming the newest recruit of the ZPD; a rabbit is the perfect animal to convince the rest of Zootopia that prey species need no longer be afraid of 'backwards predators'. Bellwether's prejudice is hinted at early on as her first 'little guys' remark is within the first ten minutes of the film, being only her second full line of dialogue. Also, the same scene of Judy's graduation ends with Bellwether quickly running past Lionheart after he pushes in front of her so that her face can be seen in the photos being taken of the event. This infers a deep-seated desire to be recognised and respected by others, even when she's supposed to be donning her meek, humble facade.
      - Bellwether keeps managing to show up at the most convenient of times. Not only does she pass by Chief Bogo's office just in time to stop the one officer integral to her plans from being fired, she also just so happens to set up the rainforest surveillance system to the exact time that Mr Manchas is captured by the wolves, therefore allowing Judy to easily discover the lab and expose the conspiracy to the general public.
      - Bellwether's name is significant as a 'bellwether' is a sheep that leads the rest of a flock. Once it's revealed that the predators are being turned savage by a group of conspiratorial rams, her name becomes a hint of her being the mammal they work for. Also, sheep have a habit of popping up during the most important parts of the film. For example, just before Duke Weaselton steals the night howlers from the florist, two rams are seen eyeing up the place and whispering to each other. Nick's character is introduced by nearling being run over by a ram who clearly harbors prejudicial views against his kind. It's also a ram reporter who asks Judy during the press conference to confirm that it's only predators who are going savage, and we even see a young ewe being bullied by Gideon the fox at the very beginning of the film, making sheep the first on-screen victims of the 'savage instincts' of modern-day predator species.
      - Nick's backstory explores the idea of spiteful prey species being prejudiced towards predators. Combine that with Bellwether being a diminutive ewe who is frequently and publicly mistreated by Lionheart, and her unyielding support for Judy over seemingly every other ZPD officer becomes slightly suspicious the more you look at it. For example, despite Judy making some dangerously broad statements during the press conference that leave every other citizen of Zootopia scared, confused or angry, Bellwether is the one to reassure her by telling her that 'she did fine'. Seems like a good example of her being a supportive friend at first, but in hindsight was because Judy had just done exactly what Bellwether wanted her to do.
There's more, but I think you get the point. Again, I do agree with you that the reveal wasn't executed especially well, and I'm certainly not claiming that it was obvious as some of these are subtle to the point of potentially being unintentional. However, I don't think it fair to say that there are no clues for the audience to spot, even during a second viewing.

Yeah, a twist villain is absolutely necessary for a mystery film.
But honestly I think the hate comes from a few places
      1. She was yet another twist villain after a couple of other ones. Even though it’s justified in this case, it was still an annoying trend. This along with comparisons to Disney’s classic villains, kinda increased the distaste towards her
      2. Her overall lack of presence in the film kinda doesn’t give a lot of impact to the twist. It was like “Oh. Right. Her. OK.” It didn’t really feel like a betrayal, or really much of anything.
      3. Her design is just not intimidating or memorable. Which is definitely the point, mind you, she was supposed to be unexpected. But all the same, after the mask dropped… it was kinda hard to take her seriously as a threat.

I have an enhanced idea for the story. Tadashi is in a relationship with Abigail Callaghan, the daughter of Robert Callaghan. We can showcase their love and connection through scenes of pictures and videos, portraying them as a devoted couple.
Abigail and Tadashi, being prominent scientists, decide to enhance Baymax to provide love and care for each other. This showcases their dedication and unique bond.
Over the years, Tadashi becomes involved with Alistair Krei's work and his company. However, Tadashi develops a sense of distrust towards Alistair Krei. We can show Alistair attempting to exploit Baymax for financial gain, but Tadashi consistently rejects his offers, leading to tension and anger between them.
When Abigail mysteriously disappears, Tadashi experiences immense grief. Baymax becomes Tadashi's source of support, helping him heal and cope with his loss. Tadashi chooses not to disclose the truth about Abigail's disappearance to Hero, and instead, relies on Baymax for comfort.
To further the story, we can depict Tadashi appearing in a video where he collaborates with Alistair Krei on a science experiment. However, an accident occurs during the experiment, leaving Tadashi to witness Callaghan's anger towards the scientific community. This heartbreaking event causes Tadashi to break down in tears, intensifying his grief over the loss of Abigail.
Tadashi's character can then undergo development as he learns to navigate his grief, much like Hero does after Tadashi's death. With Baymax's support, Tadashi gradually finds healing and ways to move forward.
Furthermore, we can introduce an additional twist by adding a trap in the basement. When Tadashi discovers a video in a private room, Callaghan and Tadashi engage in a heated argument regarding the microbots. Callaghan believes that seeking vengeance against Alistair and his company will help Tadashi's grief, but Tadashi rejects the idea. This leads to a loss of respect between them, culminating in Callaghan burning down the place, resulting in Tadashi's tragic death.
As the story progresses, Hero realizes that Yokai, the villain, believes his brother is alive and seeks revenge on Abigail. Hero confronts Yokai, initially suspecting Tadashi, but it is revealed that Callaghan is the true mastermind behind the villainous acts. This surprising twist adds depth to Callaghan's character and makes him a more compelling and complex villain.

I think if he had been more of a king candy twist villain it would have been better. He is a really tough hard ass professor who pushes his students but seems to do so to work with the rich guy and give him more inventions to buy for cheap before selling them big. Tadashi doesn't like him but he's not going to leave anyone alone in that burning building. So that all goes the same way. Maybe have the microbots not have worked properly and so he actually survives the fire but with a disability that means that no one suspects him. Maybe then hiro uses baymax and the microbots to try to help him because that's what tadoshi would have wanted but when he gets turned away from even that that's when he goes fully into his grief puts baymax away because he can't stand to look at him but leaves the microbots with Callahan. Callahan then uses the microbots to make himself like a suit thing that can take over for his mobility device whatever it was or missing leg whatever. And then continue the plot exactly as is from there. He is set up to be a not nice guy who doesn't just do a 180 for no real explained reason.

Re-watching the scene with Callahan revealed to be the villain, makes me look back to Monsters Inc. where it works way better, whereas Big Hero 6 failed. Because note that, even after Waternoose betrayed Mike and Sulley, he still assures that it wasn’t anything personal. He even chastises Randall saying that it never should’ve came to this, blaming him for being forced to banish Sulley, who he saw as a son to him.
Seriously, how hard was it for the creators of Big Hero 6 to even see that since they build up a father-son relationship between Callahan and Tadashi, that him saying what he said to Hiro, makes zero sense, since he was clearly on both brothers’ side. If anything, it would’ve made more sense, to say that he didn’t know that Tadashi was coming to save him, or that he did try to save Tadashi but failed, and try to tell Hiro that this isn’t personal.

I had an idea that would've been better: both Callaghan *and* Krei being the villains of the movie, but opposing ones.
Krei was the one who started the fire to steal Hiro's nanobots. However, Tadashi rescued Callaghan from the fire at the cost of his life, and Callaghan used the nanobots to survive. However, the accident twisted him. Callaghan has now lost not just his daughter but also one of his students to Krei's greed. He dons the mantle of Yokai for the sake of his revenge like in the story, but it's to avenge both Abigail and Tadeshi's deaths.
It'd still make for a great twist villain, but now, it's truer to Callaghan's character. He's still the caring teacher, but he's now one who wants to avenge both his daughter and Tadeshi. It also makes him a dark reflection of Hiro - he too wants to avenge Tadeshi's death. Hiro would be torn between wanting to stop Callaghan from going too far and wanting to help him kill Krei.

I still find it funny how Season 8 of _Ninjago_ managed to write a pretty great twist villain in the form of The Quiet One.
Sure, they are a character that starts off with a "nice personality" façade and later revealed to be evil, but that isn't the twist regarding The Quiet One, as it occurs right after the episode where their identity is revealed. The twist is that the Ninja's failures in an incident harkening back to the finale of Season 1 had traumatized them and shattered their perspective, fueling their villainous motives, and it re-contextualizes everything we know about past, present, and future events. Even better is Lloyd's reaction to the twist, further emphasizing this scene!

He's talked about this before, so this video appears to be more of a continuation in a disjointed saga of videos rather than a restating of points as its own video. To summarize his points from previous videos, Big Hero 6, unlike Frozen, actually had time to develop its plot and flesh out its characters. Frozen originally had Elsa be the unsympathetic, undisputed main villain of the story and it's very clear by looking back on the film how much better it would've been had they kept that plotline. Big Hero 6 on the other hand had plenty of time to develop, wasn't a rushed project, and had little rewrites throughout the script - none of which would have impacted the story in a huge way. Frozen's flop of a twist villain was due to upper management being complete and total assholes, but Big Hero 6's flop was purely due to the writing team's incompetence.

      1. Fully-fleshed-out, redeemed villain Elsa
      2. Irredeemable, totally unique Elsa

      4. Irredeemable, derivative Elsa

@@henrythef1guy768 in 2017 we actually got information about what the story would have actually been like. First off, Elsa was plain and simply a villain. Elsa and Anna also weren't sisters, and Kristoff and Hans were still in the story. There was supposed to be a hidden prophecy about a ruler with a frozen heart bringing destruction to the kingdom, and that Elsa had frozen her own heart so that she could not feel again (because she got stood up at the altar and has been scorned by her people since). Not much is known about what would have happened in between, but Anna, Kristoff, and Hans would have learned why Elsa sealed off her heart and formed a plan to get her to be willing to feel again, at the same time stopping the prophecy from happening and saving everyone in the process.
But the original ending would have been amazing. Hans would be the one the prophecy talked about, being ACTUALLY well-hinted at being an unfeeling sociopath who was hungry for power. His original goal was to lead a movement for the dethroning and execution of Elsa, opening him up to take the throne because of his status as royalty in another land and being boosted by the misplaced trust of the people. So while Elsa would be the main villain of the story for most of the way through, Hans would still be a twist villain and it would actually have worked. Apparently he would try to cause an avalanche when they had Elsa cornered and ready to talk, bludgeoning the two other heroes and Elsa to death as they careened down the side of a mountain. They somehow get out of this fatal predicament, and Elsa learns to thaw her heart after being shown that it's okay to not bottle everything up after being hurt, but is still ready to accept all the consequences of her actions because it's also not okay to hurt others in return.
Not much else is known about the rewrites because Disney likes to keep their story elements secret for potential use in future films, but from what we do know the original Frozen would have been a much more action-and-emotion-focused film.

Big Hero 6: The Series did a good job in its first two Big Bads being effective foils to Hiro and Baymax, and the latter even is a better execution of a twist villain. Just enough hints to clue in the viewer without making it too obvious. A shame about season 3.

I always thought a better way Big Hero 6 could have gone is this, the explosion that "killed" the professors daughter was actually at the showcase where Tadashi died, and we never believe the professor died, thus his lose and Hiro's lose are tied into the same event, also the daughter should actually be killed. Then the movies shows through these two characters the ways of processing grief, Hiro slowly becomes better while Calhan becomes worse, he tries to move on, eventually seeing Hiro as a surrogate child but the relationship with Hiro only reminds him of what he lost, driving him over the edge, this way we see him slowly become bitter and cruel, making him more tragic instead of a one note meme (also, in my mind for this, Calahan survived the explosion in the same way but it was Tadashi who used the microbots to save him, thus Calahan feels personally responsible and him going after Cray is to avenge his daughter and fallen pupil, also anytime the heroes fight him, I would have it where he never actually attacks them, just traps them in nanobots until he escapes showing that he does care for their saftey and doesn't want them to get involved or hurt)

I mean what if the twist hadn't actually been that Kray wasn't the villain but what if more the big reveal was that his motives were actually close and personal and somewhat relatable to Hiro just basically flip the script have it be that Robert was the one who was in some way responsible for a loved one of Kray's death maybe a sister to drive the point home.
so the big reveal is that up until the big wherehouse confrontation and unmasking they had just assumed Kray had done everything cause he was a greedy sly businessman just like Robert had told them but it turns out the bad blood that was established between them at the start was actually due to his sisters death due to Robert actually being unethical in his experiments. maybe just an idea.

frozen was where the twist villains began to suck as that movie would've been better if it stuck with elsa as the villain being antagonistic from her pain(compared to letting her kindom freeze selfishly from how the parents are the true villains of the movie with their actions.) and instead hans be so caught up with trying to stop elsa he nearly kills the sisters getting him imprisoned rather than the dumb reason for his turn/make his original change in the sequel feel organic rather than the writers realizing how really stupid it was.
with callaghan it would've worked if we saw more grief for his actions as a tragic"the end justifies the means"but being blinded with revenge or getting some satisfaction with the regretful way he looks at the end that would be more impactful if we saw him show some grief to tadashi getting caught in the crossfire or try his best to hesitate killing his students/hiro after the nearly similar dark turn he almost made having baymax kill him instead of being callously apathetic.

Professor Callaghan/Yokai might not be the best villain, but his reason for turning out like that is 100% on Alistair Krei; never trust rich entrepreneurs like him (or Lex Luthor or Roland Daggett) as they'll likely exploit you and make you into a villain, bent on destruction. If you ask me, Krei's the one who should've been incarcerated for ruining Callaghan's life, no matter how "accidental" it was.

Kalehan is a villain, but he isnt an antagonist, there isnt an antagonist to our protagonist. Its just some lunatic doing something completely unrelated to the hero and his struggles. Heros character arc is completely unrelated to Kalehan as a villain, the only link they have is the fire and that he stole the bots.
Had a story taken place where Alestar stole the bots out of greed and profit, and did the evil to cover his mistakes, would mirror how Hero used his first bot for personal gain, made Baymax harm in his search for vengeance, where Hero and Alestar would be a thematic mirror and a warning to not do evil.
You could change nothing but make Alestar the villain (and maybe tweak a little at the end), and it would be a much better movie.

Wait, did I hear that right? kang was a good villain to you? Really? Honestly, he was lackluster and weak as well. He didn't live up to the hype and just came off as a whiny bitch, honestly. Not once did I feel like he was a real threat, making me believe the others won't as well. I mean, come on. He lost to the weakest hero. The only reason he looked strong was because he was up against some of the weakest characters in the verse. He says he defeated other avengers, but I highly doubt that. He showed nothing that would even match them at all.
