    Hunting is what I am helping a friend reload for. I just met him at work and he wanted to know how to reload. I have been doing it for a little over 40 years.
    We have a bunch of range pickup brass. But so far I like the Federal cases, and the browning cases to reload.
    Interesting enough we did a ladder test on using a few ball powders, BLC-2 and Win 760.
    The 31.5 grains of Winchester 760 delivered some fabulous groups with 150 grain Winchester Power Points.
    We want to test some of the Hornady FTX bullets but ran out of time.

    Well I have 2 presses, dies for 3 hand gun and a 30-30 die set. I have enough supplies for thousands of hand gun cartridges. Can't find anything for 30-30. Factory ammo, brass, projectile, etc. I'm just getting into reloading and love the content. I've only made 4 rounds so far but your channel has made me real comfortable about starting reloading. Thanks for the detailed content, suggestions and info.

    When loading new brass I still use the resizing die. I run down just short of making contact with the case shoulder. With this the mouth expander will take care of any dinged cases and the decap pin will make sure the primer flash hole is clear. A I also recommend a firm crimp. I have had bullets pushed back into cases in a tubular magazine and powder comes out into the gun, it is not pretty.

    Winchester brass, cci primers, lever Evo, and I'm mainly using the 160 ftx. The lightest load I tried gives me consistent 3/4 and less groups. Old marlin 336 does the job. Only thing I can suggest is a crimp. It'll prob help those numbers a little as well. Although you would think an already compressed load wouldn't move too much, and your velocities would have increased. I'd still use it when reducing the charges. I've been using the Hornady single stage, but I have transferred almost everything over to the Lee breechlock. Seems to load significantly more consistent, and I love the priming arm. My Lee turret press hasn't been introduced to the 30-30 yet.

    I'm loading 150pcs of old brass over and over again for my 30-30. I'm loading old powder too come to think of it. I have been recently loading X-treme 150gr flat nose plated bullets over various IMR 4320 powder. Very Vintage 4320 powder. Three metal cans of it has been sitting in the corner of my powder file for maybe 3 or more decades. They have $8 price tags still on them! LOL I figure I'll use it up then move on to the next archived powder. My brass is various headstamps and has had hunting rounds, range rounds, cast linotype rounds, and even some 110 gr 30 carbine bullets loaded into it. I anneal my brass every 3rd or 4th firing to keep it from splitting. I do the same with 32 Winchester special and 32 Remington brass. I'm just cranking out range ammo on a Lee Loadmaster with an RCBS powder measure on a case operated rig. It works nice. Sometimes I load it on a single stage for short runs. I'm using just enough crimp to keep the bullets from setting back in the magazine. I love the loadmaster. Thirty years and hundreds of thousands of rounds and it still runs like new. I can pop off the turret and shell plate and everything in the set up is preserved. I'm set up for at least a dozen calibers with it.

    Great video, can’t wait to see more. Just started reloading for 30/30 and 35 Remington on my T7 and can’t wait to shoot them. One thing with view I might change, the press light would be great and beneficial while loading but it put off one heck of a glare for video, my eyes adjusted and looked better when you switched it off for a second, could just be my old eyes though. Great videos, keep them up.

    I'd like to see some accuracy loads being tested, I think 30-30 is underated for beginning (youth) and experienced hunters. I started out with the 30-30 and I've killed a ton of deer and thinking this season I'll be using the 30-30 just because I have one and it's been a good while since hunting with it. Also I'm wanting to reload for all my rifles but, one of my goals besides reloading for my expensive calibers (25-06 and 300sav) I want to improve the accuracy in the 30-30 and still be mag tube safe. I think it's totally possible to make a 200 yard round and be verry exceptionally tight grouping. My furthest white tail kill was about 300 yards with a marlin 336 shooting 150 grain corelokt.

    Gavin, Ammunition for a tubular feed rifle should ALWAYS be crimped. Pressure from the tube spring and rifle recoil can move the bullets further into the cartridges, thus resulting in possible over pressure condition.

    Got a cow elk this fall with my hand load this fall at 25yds and an antelope at a shade over 300yds. (Had to do some holdover). There was fair expansion on the elk, it was broadside and hit just behind the shoulder and struck no bones. She made it about 30 yards before dropping. The antelope was hit in the bottom of the heart and ran some distance before it fell. Expansion wasn’t that great, considering the distance was probably more than the cartridge and the projectile were designed for, is understandable. Definitely impressed with the performance

    One of my many gripes with progressive reloaders is the inability to make the crimp a separate step, unless you have a spare station in your press. I always read where the seating and crimping steps should not be combined as it affects accuracy. I have always wondered how true this is. Anyway, I went back to single stage reloading as my needs aren't all that great. But this is a good video, and I love the t-shirt!

    'Fun.tastic' video as usual GT!!..
    Quite instructive indeed. I still keep my (20 - 25 yrs old) RCBS single stage presses, just for rifle ctg reloading + .45 LC first resizing step due to its (almost vestigial) rim. Mostly use my progressive presses for handgun / straight wall ctgs, LEE LM + Dillons, also over 20 yrs old. Not to give a bad rap to Hornady, BUT their handgun resizing dies' sizing ring (PVD TiN ??.. IDK), Ti Nitride coating (.357 & 9x19mm), worn out after just 20.000 rds. Replaced those w/ LEE's carbide ones in first position + Hdy's ones in 2nd position. Not a single issue after that.
    Many thanks & Blessings!!.

    My 1973 M94 with a 20” bbl, exact same components except for WLR primers, came in at 2250 fps with 34.3 gr. Measured via a Magnetospeed. Per QL, that just below 42kpsi.

    Looks like fun for something like 3030 considering it's not really a long range round anyway so progressive would save a bunch of time! I don't think I'll be doing progressive loading with something like .243 considering accuracy may become an issue with that one, but it definitely opens up some new options I haven't really considered before!

    • @LL-pd9dg
      @LL-pd9dg 2 года назад +3

      If you are using a roll crimp, it might be rolling too much, or you might have some cases that are trimmed too long. Under these conditions, the roll crimp goes beyond its normal depth into the cannelure creating a high force that causes the shell to collapse in length, thus bulging it. I have a friend who did this on both 300AAC and 5.56 x 45. My preference is a factory crimp (collet style) such as those manufactured by Lee Precision.

      @@Engineman120 At what stage does the neck bulge? Does it happen with all cartridges? Are you using Lee dies for all stages or a mix of manufacturers? Does it bulge if you reduce the load? Have you verified the diameters of all the bullets in the lot (Had a friend who once had .243 bullets mixed in a box of .223 as it came from the manufacturer. He did not have any .243 guns or components.) Have you checked the ID's of the necks after sizing? Did you chamfer the neck ID's? My thoughts are if the bullet seating die does not have a roll crimp feature, then something is making a high bullet insertion force that is causing the bulge. I would not expect powder compression to have sufficient force to bulge the neck. You might want to check the dies for possible debris accumulation.

    • @Engineman120
      @Engineman120 2 года назад

      @@LL-pd9dg So I used Lee full length sizing (no bumping of the shoulder evident by shoulder measurement comparator), Lee bullet seating die, and the Lee factory crimp die. I honestly did not measure inner neck diameter. Even the last batch I had that did bulge necks was 36.4 gr with 5 or 6 of 50 rounds loaded having the issue. Seemed to have more of them with the max recommended of 37.0 gr. I made a few rounds recently that were not compressed and there were issues of bulged necks. I would have to do further testing to see and maybe further measurements.
