What are the horizontal post that are above the run? Every several feet they run across with cattle panels and tarp over them. How are they attached? Looks perfect. Video was hard to watch. Hearing Matt's voice just makes me cry for you all. ❤🙏🏽
Oh my goodness I have missed a few of your videos, everything has been so crazy in the world just trying to keep up with everything going on. That's a very nice chicken coop Matt you have done a great job
Thank you so much, I really appreciate that. I have been holding onto this video for a couple of days now, it just didn't feel right releasing it. But the video feed is so heavy right now, and the best way to deal with anxiety for me is to do something positive and empowering. So, for those like me, building a chicken house for the first time, I figured maybe channeling our energy on something positive would help, in some way. For those of us feeling helpless right now. :(
The Kneady Homesteader I’ve decided to stop watching the news channels feeding the frenzy. I’m not posting anything else on the topic and I’m not watching or reading anything more on it. I’m done with all the hate.
Great job Matt! Everything looks so nice. One thing you may want to think about it moving the nest boxes closer to the door. It would be easier to collect the eggs and you wouldn't have to walk through chicken poop as much.
GREAT coop and run!! Thanks for sharing!! Looks like ya'll are ready for some chicken TV. Can't wait for some videos!! Oh and Lemongrass, Citronella, and Grapefruit essential oils with a carrier oil work great for bugs. Especially around the ears. (we use the bottle with the rolling ball, don't know the name of it)
"Food Grade" Diatomaceous Earth (some still don't know). Great tip about leaving a bit of play on the tarp for tipping out the pooling rainwater! Lovin' that pink tire 😘 💞👵
What a greathome your chickens have. They will be making great eggs for you. BTW Heather, That 1870 Homestead has a recipe today for all natural bug spray. Rachel & Todd also live in MI and she swears the mosquitoes don't come near her. You can use it for your animals, your kids and yourselves. She also said it is good for ticks. You might want to have a look at it. Y'all stay well, Matt you have done a great job on the coop, and have a Blessed day.
Hi do you use the diatomaceous earth solely as bedding for the coop? How many times do you replace it? Is it worth it? Was also wondering about the coop refresher. How many times do you sprinkle that on there? I’m currently using straw and pine shavings but it gets moist in my coop from condensation. I have to top off the bedding every day and I’m trying to go as easy as possible. Thanks 😊
from all of my research, straw is bad..... not only can they accidentally inject it which is can get stuck in their crop but it also holds Freas, which can make your chickens sick. We just use the pine shavings. I sprinkle DE everywhere but the nesting boxes..... but not too often. If everything is kept clean and dry you shouldn't need it often. We deep liter here because we live in northern lower Michigan and our wind chills can get into the -30 to -50. I use ash a lot.... from our fire-it. my hands love it mixed with clean soil.....they dirt bath in it. I have an amazon list with several books I recommend, that taught me so much!www.amazon.com/shop/thekneadyhomesteader/list/MOV3FK02CBMJ?ref_=cm_sw_r_cp_ud_aipsflist_aipsfthekneadyhomesteader_K4DD1KTH9PBZ275NKKHF
The only thing I'm going to offer is that with a heavy snow load and the top being flat, it may bend that inward. That is why we arched ours when we did the bantam's covered run. Looks good!
matt is seriously considering arches or placing metal tin on the roof. your point is very well received. i imagine there will be a lot of tweaking as we go on this journey 😆😆😆😆😆😆 my poor husband. his hands are going to be sweaty. 🤣
I see you have two 'perches' for yourselves in the run, Matt and Heather; they 'are' great fun to watch. You might want to consider hooks on the structure to hang them up when not in use to protect them from chicken droppings when you're not using them, that is unless you've had a good talking to the chickens about 'never' flying up on them! : )
@@TheKneadyHomesteader I guess I'm a bit dense today... When you are not enjoying chicken-watching on your future swing....the chickens will fly up onto the swing and....poop as nature has allowed for them - right? I've watched, on another homesteader channel, chickens high up in trees, to perch for the night! Very interesting creatures! (I wonder if the neighbors will wander over to the run to observe, too). : )
Are the chickens able to get into the chicken house? That one going into coop looks really steep but all looks great brother I know your happy and love the whole project 😁
I used the feather duster but mine never used it. If you guys have bug problem like we do, get a few guineas and raise them together with your baby chicks. They get alone just fine and they bond as a flock. Your coop looks great! We are building ours this week.
our shed is actually a double insulated plastic. we took the windows out and added hardware cloth so they get nice air flow inside. without it being drafty. 🥰
Hey Matt , Great job on the coop. Just one question though notice the spacing on the ladder. Are the chickens going to be able to come out that way and go in that way because they look a little far apart for the chickens. I know they will grow but you need to start training them now right? Just something for you to think about Heather. Like you don't have enough already LOL. But I do love the new Kahn egg mansion . LOL . Y'all take care be safe. God bless you and yours all the way from Florida.
Hey you two. Love your videos. We are making a run similar to yours. We used hardware wire on our top due to preditors. It's like Fort Knox! We also have a tarp for the top. How are you dealing with water or snow pooling on top of the tarp? I know you can push some of it off. Looking for ideas. I am thinking of stringing empty gallon milk jugs down the center on top of the wire to kind of create an inverted "V" or peak. Then the tarp over top.. Wondering what you did. I'll let you know how my milk jug idea works out! God bless.
great question! it varies. some folks say 2ft of space per chicken for reg size and 1ft for bantam, some say 4ft for reg size and 2ft for bantams, if you free range your chickens or have a good size run for them. I think its 4ft per chicken if they are staying in the coop majority of the time. We have a 10x10ft coop with a 30ftx10ft run and plan to free range them as well. We are erring on the bigger side. We have 17 chickens....with 4 Guinea Fowl joining their flock for protection. We wanted to make sure they had a lot of space so they would be happy.
Y do u want them in all shade? Chickens do best in sunlight. You won’t have such a heavy load of bacteria in the sun. Give them some shade but I don’t think all shade is that good for them.
Is there a particular reason you made the chicken door so high up to have that steep of a ramp? From everything I've seen on other chicken coups they aren't that steep and are normally a bit wider. I'm not trying to be a smart butt at all, I genuinely want to know because I'm considering chickens for next year and am trying to learn what's best for the chickens and for my area. I think it may be a mistake not tieing the tarp down in the middle. You may have a issue with wind picking it up and tearing it. But if you find the wind takes it to much, you can always come back and use plastic tie ties on it. I will be interested in how well it holds up and how it does with snow. Please keep us updated long term on how it works out and if you would do anything differently.
great question! we did a lot of research, and found that setting the pop hole higher up is just another way to prevent predators. If gosh forbid, something was able to get into the run at night, then having that door higher up off the ground makes it more difficult to break into. From all we have read. 🤞🏻 We do have the tarps tied to one another so it prevents a lot of lift, being 30ft long but I totally understand what you are saying. Matt is considering adding a metal roof to it for winter. Possibly. We shall see. At least for right now, it's working beautifully. 😁👍🏻
I noticed you have gaps between fence panels and at the doors on your chicken run, I hope you don't have Weasels in your area, as they can easily fit thru those areas in your run. No problems as far as keeping the chickens inside. Otherwise looks like you are making a great home for your flock. I wish you the best of luck with your birds.
yes, big gaps....we covered all of those over with hardware cloth. Every inch of that run is covered in cloth. hahaha I didn't want any of my babies hurt!

Your chicken coop is awesome. After 3 years of having chickens because I have wood floors I put cheap linoleum down on the floor it works great
nice!!!!! our flooring is a plastic tile floor. i am glad we didn't do the wood now. thank you!!!!!

Your chickens will roost at the highest point they can get 2 in that building make sure your nests are lower than where they roost

if your ramp is 8 inches wide next time have the pieces cut 16 inches, then you just have to cut them in half, less cuts, no waste
thanks Donna! will tell the boss man 😆
Beautiful! I'm so jealous!! *;)*
Hahaha no, no! Its just a repurposed shed and some fencing. Anyone can do this!
