Meanest main battle tank in the world and remains so to this day. It's not the most agile but it's the toughest and most accurate. Main armament also rotates faster than most. If I were to choose a tank to protect my life with, this would he top of the list.
It's not actually the most accurate. The rifled gun is just to enable it to shoot HESH in indirect fire at very long ranges (over 10km) and doesn't add accuracy to the other rounds the tank fires (APFSDS). In fact, our sabot rounds are designed NOT to be spun by the rifling, as this would degrade their accuracy in flight. The reason a Chally 1 got the longest range tank kill was down to two factors. 1. The sights (at the time) on other tanks like M1 Abrams didn't function for targets beyond 4km, as it was assumed this was out of effective range, while Challenger had long range sights for HESH bombardment. 2. The gunner was lucky, he said so himself, and he only asked the commander if he could engage because both tanks were stationary and they had nothing better to shoot at. The real measure of accuracy of a modern tank is in the fire control and hunter-killer systems, rather "how many targets can I, as the gunner, service in a minute?" In that regard, Challenger 2 is lacking. While the rate of fire on the L30A1 gun is actually better than that of tanks like the Leopard 2 and Abrams, due to lap-loading, the Challenger 2 has shown consistently lower ability to quickly and accurately engage targets than these competitors, and the UK knows it. New fire control systems are high on the priority list for future Challenger 2 upgrades, but right now, we are behind.

A real pity we’re looking at what will probably turn out to be the last tank designed and built in Britain, since we no longer have any tank production facilities the British Army’s next MBT, if they ever get one, will most likely be of foreign design and manufacture.
@@pliat That may be but they closed down the U.K.’s only remaining tank production facility several years ago and, unless they’re guaranteed large contracts, they’re highly unlikely to open a new one.
It’s currently in the late stages of its life extension program with the mod expected to announce a winner later this year. Rheinmetall seem to be the most likely to win, their proposal aids to add a new turret armed with the 120mm l55 smoothbore gun, rear turret ammo stowage with blowout doors and new optics including thermal optics for the commander.
@@Bob10009 it could. Rheinmetall have shown that their challenger life extension program turret can utilize the 130mm l51 smoothbore main gun however they still need to design and fit an auto loader into the turret bustle. It is unlikely that the mod will choose the l51 over the l55 as the big edge rheinmetalls design (now marketed by rheinmetall bae systems land (RBSL) has over their competition is the l55 smoothbore would put Britain in commonality with the rest of nato, choosing the l51 would not. The sentiment I’ve heard from people at the mod on forums and such however is that if RBSL wins its the l55 thats chosen. My thoughts however are that I would think having a mixed fleet of l55 and l51 armed challenger 3s would be a wise move as we move into commonality with nato should any conflicts kick off whilst also training troops on the l51 and learning the benefits, downfalls and technologies of 130mm.
@@HJDore knowing the MOD, they’ll pick the 120mm for commonality and place the order the day after the rest of NATO announce they’re upgrading to 130mm.
I’m no military person and can’t really make a knowledgeable comment about the durability of this tank, though I have heard it is good. But I have to ask has it come up against a really good enemy tank crewed by an equally highly trained crew, rather than second rate or old tanks? That’s a genuine question
Got to be a yanks post !! The challenger went up against the same enemy ??? You yanks lost tanks fact !! We did not fact !! I think this answers your question what you also forget much of the yank technology came from us poor old Brits !! Oh yeah forgot to mention the longest tank kill ??
No it hasn’t, but neither have any other modern tanks, especially NATO ones. They usually fight T-54/55, T-72 (early variants), Type-69/59(similar to T-54A) and T-62. None of which are particularly modern.
@@v4skunk739 the challenger 2 is based on the challenger 1, which is based on the chieftain. The same way that the M1A2 Abrams is based on its’ predecessors.
@@pliat the challenger 2 has virtually no part commonality with the challenger 1 and absolutely no commonality with the chieftain. it was a new design.
@@jreg2007 the challenger 1 was based on the chieftain, originally an export tank it was then cancelled, this upgraded export chieftain then became the challenger 1. The challenger 2 is indeed based on the challenger 1, developed when the British government saw the Vickers MBT outclassing the challenger 1. Originally the challenger 2 was meant to use as many challenger 1 parts as possible (i think about 20%), however they ended up using barely any.
They were keen to replace the L30 with the L55 after favourable test firings. However I am told the single piece rounds for the smooth bore weapon require totally different stowage configuration to the multi part ammo for the L30, and that to achieve this in the Chally 2 would pretty much amount to designing and building a whole new turret. That was way beyond the scope of the envisaged upgrade and is apparently why the idea was dropped.
Challenger was built by Vickers in Leeds, not BaE Systems. However it is true that the Vickers factory has been closed. The Germans use the L55 in their latest derivative of the Leopard 2 and it is true that a Challenger 2 was fitted as such for trials however with the nature of the L55's ammunition being single piece to Challenger's 3 piece (though really the vent tubes aren't a big issue, it's the main 2 pieces, Round and bag charge that are) only 6 rounds could be stowed in the tank. To rectify this would be to totally redesign the turret as well as various components in the hull as well as moving equipment round. The cost of such a redesign was also massive and as such the cons have outweighed the pros of changing the main armament. Challenger is currently undergoing it's LEP program though which, whilst leaving it looking much the same for the most part on the exterior, will see the interior changed up with new equipment. There will be some external changes as well as changes to the powerplant and the tank will have a new breath of life breathed into it. Hope this answers your question well enough. Cheers
All British tanks should be fitted with PA systems and go into battle bellowing out the voice of Prince Philip, hurling abuse and insults.just pick your enemy and slip in the appropriate tape. It would scare the shit out of them,or piss them off, either result is a winner.
Brits destroy the enemy's intelligence-gathering and disseminating capability. Americans shoot the enemy's conscripts. What do you think is the more intelligent strategic ploy?
Not nearly enough Challenger's built ?has to be one of the best battle tanks in the world second 😂 to none at the moment? Gun maybe needs to upgraded to 130 Mm +? to smoothbore main gun ammo a standard size on most allied tanks ? Otherwise the tanks useless if can't get ammo for main gun.? Standard ammo issued to most allied tanks? The challenger tanks are back in business? Just a thought I am no expert in these things just a little opinion.
I fought one of these after a night out at Witherspoon's it couldn't move quick enough and I took it out with a stream of beer p!ss down the hatch. Luckily the crew were not harmed just moist and so we all went out for a few more pints together after they surrendered.
@Evil Mofo To date, the only time the tank has been seriously damaged during operations was by another Challenger 2 in a 'blue on blue' (friendly fire) incident at Basra in 2003 when the damaged tank had its hatch open at the time of the incident.
@Evil Mofo No they didn't 'lose a few'. Unlike the Abrams, NO Challenger, either model 1 or model 2 has ever been lost to enemy action. 'Lucky'? The 200+ Challenger 2s of Br. 1st Armoured Div. destroyed more than 300 Iraqi AFVs. That's class, not luck.

A real pity we’re looking at what will probably turn out to be the last tank designed and built in Britain, since we no longer have any tank production facilities the British Army’s next MBT, if they ever get one, will most likely be of foreign design and manufacture.
What are you talking about? BAe Systems is one of the largest arms manufacturers on the planet.
@@pliat That may be but they closed down the U.K.’s only remaining tank production facility several years ago and, unless they’re guaranteed large contracts, they’re highly unlikely to open a new one.
@@mrjockt I wouldn’t mind if it was made somewhere else. I just dont want a foreign design.
It's a disgrace that our politicians harp on about being proud of Britain engineering and then sells it to the highest bidder.
At the beginning of the video, are British wings supposed be crocked like that?
nightlightabcd No
We should make tanks from what ever that mast is made of. Four hits to bring it down!
Un tanque espectacular!!!!
My very 1st SSM,served in both Gulf Wars and would often say"Its hotter then an Arabs jockstrap"....watching this i understand why🤔🤔
is the Challenger 2 still up to the task or will it need to be replaced soon?
It’s currently in the late stages of its life extension program with the mod expected to announce a winner later this year. Rheinmetall seem to be the most likely to win, their proposal aids to add a new turret armed with the 120mm l55 smoothbore gun, rear turret ammo stowage with blowout doors and new optics including thermal optics for the commander.
@@HJDore interesting, thanks for the reply.
@@HJDore it could even get the new 130mm gun 😉
My ex was reme and was a reckie mec in Iraq she said that they kept breaking down due to the sand and dust
I’m no military person and can’t really make a knowledgeable comment about the durability of this tank, though I have heard it is good. But I have to ask has it come up against a really good enemy tank crewed by an equally highly trained crew, rather than second rate or old tanks? That’s a genuine question
I don’t think so
But either has the Abrams, and everyone bangs on about the leopard, the knew version hasnt been battle tested like the British and yanks
Listen to the big behemoths just ticking over as they idle. 😃😃👍🏻👍🏻🇦🇺

When the british army was an actual army
What makes you think it has changed?
We're even stronger now, my son...have you seen the Royal Navy's 2 brand new super-aircraft carriers?
Best Tank in the World by far ... superior to the Abrams by a long mile.
You'd hope so when the design is like 2 decades newer.
Better than the Abrams for sure
No, it isn't. Both are pretty much evenly matched.
@@johnmcdonald9304 Nope ...

Is it true that BAE is not making any more tanks in Britain and also the Brits are putting a German barrel on the Challenger .
This was considered for a while as it would allow for a greater variety of ammunition however I believe this has now been discounted.
Cheers
pretty sure Vickers is in Newcastle though
@@mikeyforester6221 Crossgates in Leeds ( now demolished) and Scotswood in Newcastle. (no longer a production facility).

Awsome vid.
Anyone done an insurance quote on one of these yet?
Ooooooh Yessss!!...{Churchill)... ;) Theres now a nodding dog in every Chally 3....
All British tanks should be fitted with PA systems and go into battle bellowing out the voice of Prince Philip, hurling abuse and insults.just pick your enemy and slip in the appropriate tape. It would scare the shit out of them,or piss them off, either result is a winner.

The biggest difference between Brits and Americans. In American videos we shoot the enemy and not radio towers.
Brits destroy the enemy's intelligence-gathering and disseminating capability. Americans shoot the enemy's conscripts. What do you think is the more intelligent strategic ploy?
An enemy can be replaced and pick up a rifle...slightly harder to replace radio communications though

The only tank that is better than an Abrams, 0 Battle losses

I'm sure Challenger is a very good tank. Abrams though is really top of the food chain. 🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲
You're completely deluded, the challenger has never been lost in combat and holds the record for the longest tank on tank kill. Abrams is like a Russian T34, easy to destroy, but there's just lots of them.
