- On the 21 March 2003, the U.S. Army's 3rd Division crossed the Kuwaiti border into Iraq as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom. By the 4 April, the Division had advanced some 400-kilometres and was standing at the gates to the Iraqi capital city of Baghdad. However, as the 3rd prepared to conduct the offensive into the city, U.S. Intelligence had no clear understanding of the state of Iraqi defences in Baghdad. This prompted Major General Buford Blount, C.O. 3rd Division, to order an armoured raid into the capital to test the response of the Iraqi defences - a raid that has since become known as, the Thunder Run into Baghdad.
This video is dedicated to the memory of Staff Sergeant Stevon Booker.

Hi everyone,
I just wanted to add a little bit more information on what weapon immobilised the M1 Abrams tank, nicknamed Cojone Eh and commanded by Staff Sergeant Jason Diaz. I know there’s some confusion surrounding this topic, so I’m hoping the following quotes/points help to clarify or answer any questions you may have had.
Unfortunately, during my research, I wasn’t able to pinpoint exactly what weapon the Iraqi troops used, mainly because my primary sources, published by the U.S. Army, conflict with each other. The first source is an article titled ‘Call For Papers: Empowering to Win in a Complex World’, published by the Combined Arms Center. The author wrote:
“Near the first overpass on Highway 8, an RPG round exploded in the rear of SSG Jason Diaz’s tank, immobilizing it.”
While the C.A.C. identified the weapon as being an RPG, the second source, which is a video called ‘OIF: The Fight for Baghdad’ and released by the Army University Press, states that:
“A one in a million shot, from a recoilless rifle, pierced the vulnerable rear engine grill of an Abrams tank and started an engine fire.”
And, finally, we then have the third source which is the U.S. Army’s Official History on the Iraq Campaign:
“Staff Sergeant Diaz’s tank…took either an RPG or recoilless rifle hit in the rear.”
Now, although it is disputed whether the tank was hit by either an RPG or a recoilless rifle, many in the 1st Battalion, 64th Armored, who were present in the Thunder Run on the 5 April 2003, have said that they believe a recoilless rifle was most likely used. Captain David Hibner, of the 10th Engineer Battalion and who was attached to the 64th Armored for the Thunder Run, commented that:
“A recoilless rifle disabled one of the tanks…It hit into the tanks engine compartment and it started it on fire.”

I was a Bradly Commander (BC) in C 3/15 INF during Thunder Run, I've been through a lot prior to the assault, both during Desert Storm and leading up to Thunder Run. My Bradly exhausted all 300 rounds of our 25 mm and hot reloaded the coax twice. I was never so scared in my life sitting in that BC hatch.

Thank you for your service. I don’t remember the date, it was early or mid April, but my company, 147th Maintenance, moved up after Baghdad was cleared out. I remember burned out vehicles and trailers with missiles on them. Downed power lines and towers.There was quite a bit of destruction that we had little to do with but were very thankful for. After Baghdad it wasn’t too bad north of the city.

I was a Marine Infantryman following tanks as we rolled in. Let me tell it was wild. Vehicles flying at us and tanks blowing them right by us, jets hitting vehicles as we pushed in and they charged us. Had people trying to kill us and some trying to surrender, every trigger pull us Grunts made had to be second guessed, that guy popping out of the tree could have an RPG ready to hit our track or a man that was coming out to surrender

That's exactly what happened. Most of the "combatants" were just regular people living their lives.
@@ellzgoespro6568 very sad, a history teacher of mine pointed out that Iraq back then had infrastructure, a middle class, and a fairly stable existence (you can see this in the footage, these roads don't look much different than American highways)... but after the invasion quality of life plunged into post-apocalyptic levels and never recovered. Their government was evil, Saddam was a thug, but these were just normal people living their lives... they didn't ask for their country to become the "Harvard of Terrorism".

I was 535th En Co CSEs coms chief.. we spear headed for youz guys up the left flank and created Route Donkey to secure the land for the C130 airstrip south by south west of karbala gap.. and somewhat west of najaf and nasirya.. the qrf yall provided us ran out of fuel . So.. we pushed on forward . I didnt like it one bit.. all we had was two freakin AT4s and a D7 with a mine rake.. we ended up making army history as the first CSE ever to be 68k ahead of any combat team.. we also had Luke Baker from reuters with us.. Karbala gap was where it got ugly for me.. when the sun started coming up i could see the downed apache to the left in a field near some watery looking grassy areas those pilots got captured... and we had a track vehcile in the road that took 9 casualties.. rpg got em when they dropped the door.. being with an engineer xo we was all over the place going from objective to objective to ensure you all had engineer support... we built Dogwood LSA then moved into the upper floor of the old airport terminals at biap a while later..

thunderruns, the Baghdad experience, Fallujah and Najaf have defined urban warfare in the 21st century. they set the atmosphere for the rest of the century, like was seen in Mosul. War in the future will be fought more and more in this environment, and all the challenges will be amplified.

I was in this thunder run, I was a E2, driver in a Bradley. I can still feel the heat and how bad we smelled and sick to my stomach after a clam chowder MRE. I absolutely hated it, but now after so many years I truly miss it. I miss my battle buddies that I’ll never get to see again or lost contact with. My life has felt like I’ve been stuck in Iraq and I cannot move forward no matter how hard I try, I miss everyone so much.

I rolled past the knocked out Abrams in my truck a few days after the Thunder run... It was the only time i had ever seen an MI destroyed. Good to finally know it was an air strike that kept it from being captured..

The CO 3rd Div Major General’s last name doesn’t sound the way it is spelled and is actually pronounced “Blunt”. A non-issue. Great video. These are the stories of the initial invasion that are rarely told, other than by those who were there. These are good examples of some of the very intense engagements that took place.
Currently in the 4th ID. Met a couple of SGMs and MSGs who were deployed during Iraqi Freedom. I'm HR so I'm around lots of senior enlisted.

I think it sailed over his head that SSGT Booker was the Commander... Plus, in an engagement like the, 360 degree eyeball of the immediate surroundings and potential obstacles in your path is far more useful than what could at the time be quite limited cameras...
I was thinking the same, he could have just have had is head exposed if he wanted to spot instead of laying prone on the turret so he could shoot with his m4. His arrogance got him killed.
At the time of our invasion, we still had issues w the optical processors overheating, hence the box on the rear bustle rack today, that are used to cool the computers In the tank. How do I know.... I was a tanker and tank instructor at the US Army Armor school fort Knox KY from. 97 to 2000.

Chances are he got trigger happy and thought he was a hero on D-Day. I respect his loss of life but thats it. I was part of 3rd Brigade 3rd Infantry Division 2/69 AR. I deployed 2 times with those guys. We had great times and rough times. I'll never forget. The Sledgehammer Brigade.
I'm know I'm not anyone who should be recommending medals but he deserves MOH in my opinion.

Would you consider doing a video on the Last Stand of the 2nd Devons in 1918?
On the 27th March 1918 the 2nd Battalion of the Devonshire Regiment (a fictitious version of which appeared in the featude film 1918) were wiped out during the Third Battle of the Aisne at Bois des Buttes.
Their division was seconded to the French 6th Army and put into a quiet sector of the line to reorganise after hard fighting.
And then the Third Battle of the Aisne came down on them like a ton of bricks.
They fought hard, and their stubborn resistance allowed other units to get back and reorganise despite being heavily outnumbered, saving god know's how many lives in the process, but at an awful cost. Last stands always do.
The battalion lost 551 men including the commanding officer Lieutenant Colonel Anderson-Morshead killed or missing, maybe 40 or 50 survived.
I'm a Devon boy, the Devons are my county regiment.
I feel proud of what they achieved, but it breaks my heart.
Some of the men came from my home town of Teignmouth. One lived just down the road from where my flat is.
They shall not grow old
As we that are left grow old
Age shall not weary them
Nor the years condemn
At the going down of the sun
And in the morning
We will remember them
What a fascinating tale of bravery,courage and last stand...salute to those soldiers.
I remember they based the BF3 mission on this
The BF3 mission had literally nothing to do with it other than they used the nickname for the push into Baghdad as the name of the official operation for the BF3 mission.

Booker was definitely a bad ass. Jumped out of the tank where he would be safe because his mama deuce jammed so he could get out with his M4 and provide accurate fire for the entire column.
