The invasion of Iraq was a disaster from the beginning on. Not only that but Iraq is still struggling economically, and with sanctions against Iran, the entire region has been further punished. There's one thing I don't understand. It is generally taught that the Iraqi army was quickly destroyed by the US and its allies. However I see in the comments section several former soldiers talking about colleagues who died, or lost limbs, or were otherwise seriously wounded in the course of several (re)-deployments. Something doesn't add up. Who was putting up the resistence?
There was a power vacuum after the Iraqi army was decimated by the US. Local warlords and militia took power on the basis of stabilizing their region or area. Their allegiances were based on their branch of Islam (Sunni vs. Shia) or tribal affiliation. The fighting from then on was a lot more like a drawn out guerilla war with different factions terrorizing each other or the US forces still in Iraq. The US eventually withdrew unceremoniously and now Iran flexes an enormous amount of influence in Iraq through the militias that succeeded and also won elections.
2003 was a huge mistake, which we all already know. Instead of war, it should've been negotiations, given that Iran was an enemy to Saddam. Isis never would've had the opportunity to cause chaos in the region and so on. I did two tours there, first wave 03 and 06. Being in Iraq was by far the worst 18 months of my life!! I remember the smells, sounds, screams, the horrific visions. We didn't know what the fuck we were there for, and so many innocent lives were lost; military and Iraqi citizens. The government wasted billions of dollars! For what? Shit, my unit couldn't even get a proper bulletproof or flak vests. But we were committed to finding and killing the enemy. Little did we know our enemies were on our soil🇺🇸

The invasion of Iraq was a disaster from the beginning on. Not only that but Iraq is still struggling economically, and with sanctions against Iran, the entire region has been further punished. Both wars in Iraq and now the skirmishes in Syria show how US military involvement is often poorly executed. Iraq depends on its neighbors for economic prosperity, especially since Iran is so much larger and more populous. I believe the new effort by the Arab League will bring peace to the region.

I was a kid in America when this happened.
20 years later i feel awful for these people
2003 was a huge mistake, which we all already know. Instead of war, it should've been negotiations, given that Iran was an enemy to Saddam. Isis never would've had the opportunity to cause chaos in the region and so on.
I did two tours there, first wave 03 and 06. I never could understand it, i thought that we were there to help the helpless. But i was in for a rude life changing awakening that scarred me for the rest of my life.
Being in Iraq was by far the worst 18 months of my life!! I remember the smells, sounds, screams, the horrific visions. We didn't know what the fuck we were there for, and so many innocent lives were lost; military and Iraqi citizens. The government wasted billions of dollars! For what? What are those
To everyone who participated in the war of occupying Iraq, the curse of the children and the elderly who were killed by the American army will continue to haunt them until the Day of Resurrection, and history will curse them because they destroyed this country.
I guess the judgment will take many years to finish, because the line is long. Imagine God having to judge every man who killed other men while invading their land, throughout human history?
@@User-jr7vf apparently, judging by most comments, god will judge ONLY those who invaded muslims countries.
Even though 90% of the wars of human history happened in europe.
But when someone is invading europe ( which is 90% of the wars) then it's fine...
Like look at the comments.
Russia's invasion is fine, but american's invasion is not fine.
What kind of double standard is that?
Both is a superpower invading a weaker country in the name of power , land, oil and influence.
I was there with 4th Infantry Division. Young 23 year old soldier😱 lost a couple friends. 😢
Time goes by
You have no shame? Do you?
You mf destroyed Iraq....
amazing we ended up losing this war
@@groggerpingas??? "No major military defeats" they literally withdrew from both countries because they couldnt stop the insurgents/Taliban. Afghanistan remains under Taliban control and Iraq is still not fully fixed.
@@groggerpingas It is shameful that your mentality is still alive and we are in the year 2023. Did you say a purification process? Purge what? Rape of minors, displacement of families, torture of innocent people in Abu Ghraib prison, and burning of families. Is this purification? How barbaric you are, shame on you
@@groggerpingas America has lost all of its soldiers in Iraq, whether dead, mentally ill, or disabled. Despite the alliance of more than 30 countries against Iraq and the strongest armies, they will not be able to control the city of Fallujah, Sadr City, the Wadi al-Salam cemetery in Najaf, Dhi Qar, Sniper Juba, and many of all these areas. The places were a nightmare for the Americans. They would not approach them because they knew very well that when they entered them, they would be torn apart. I feel like there is something wrong when I try to convince an American person that the invasion of Iraq is a grave mistake and a disgrace to America, and that the Iraqis are victims and the American soldiers were brainwashed. Even the American government admitted that the invasion of Iraq was a mistake. big
I WILL NEVER FORGET ABOUT THAT DAY . THE SKY OF IRAK ILLUMINATED BY THE FIRE.
You are right.
I will never forget the sound of the US bombers above my house on the way to destroy Serbia in 1999, still without any justifiable reasons.
@@BFVK Americans are WARPIGS, they only live to destroy other countries for their own profit.
'shock and awe' was mostly about war profiteering for the ruling class/
War crime.
I still remember when they started calling in Speakers. The coalition forces give you peace. Please move away from the street, then start mutual shelling with the Republican Guard, but the most terrifying thing is that I saw an American soldier who got out of the tank burning and running without knowing what to do. That was very terrifying. I was only 16 years old then.
do you have civilian relatives or friends who died in the conflict?
@@User-jr7vf No, because I was only hearing about victims caused by terrorism that killed thousands of innocent people. At a time when the American forces were making great efforts to fight terrorist groups, and I was fighting alongside them against terrorism when I was 19 years old.
@@alijasim-f16 so you joined a kind of insurgency against your government? Or did the national forces sided with the Americans and you were part of it?
Yeah but what happened between Oct 2001 - Mar 2003 ?
When chronicling out involvement, don’t forget the decade of sanctions before the invasion. And the war in 91. And how the US was an ally of saddam through the ‘80s and encouraged his war with Iran.
