    when you said the ball looked organic, I immediately thought of a fungus called Clathrus ruber or basket stinkhorn. It has that red outline! When I saw this mushroom (sadly only once) in real life I really thought it was some kind of panelless ball. Would be a cool idea to make a ball based on these types of funky mushrooms.

    Could you have marked each panel by hand with a pen while they were still in the laser cutter laid out? Like once you ran the run you could compare to a labeled picture on the computer. Then once you have them matched up with their neighbouring piece you could remove the label with rubbing alcohol

    You can make more organic shapes using a voronoi pattern. Place dots on a sphere and each cell is the region nearest to each point. If you placed a point in the middle of each pentagon and hexagon of a regular foot ball, you'd get the foot ball. But you can move the points around, add or subtract points, or push the density to one side. It would be super cool to see a world map with it.

    I have a cool idea for a ball! I saw several math papers that show ways to make asymmetric balls using just triangles of the same shape. Look up “Robert Dawson spherical tiling”. I find the (75°, 60°, 60°) tiling of “Tilings of the Sphere with Isosceles Triangles” particularly interesting.

    • @IsaacMyers1
      @IsaacMyers1 10 месяцев назад +12

      the only problem is you would need already curved material to cut out the triangles.

    • @ProminentCorpse
      @ProminentCorpse 10 месяцев назад +4

      I don't think they were necessarily saying that someone should make a ball using one of those designs, just that people might find them interesting.

    The glowforge fan is incredibly loud. If you had an external aftermarket fan, that would reduce the noise drastically. I have a glowforge and I wasn’t able to be in the same room when it was cutting until I got the aftermarket fan.

    Is the laser cutter acoustically isolated from the floor? Usually using high end speaker isolators will take care of a lot of it. Theres a lot of energy loss at the boundary of air and wall so having to do that transition twice will help. Past that limp mass absorbers will help too i bet. Plus absorbers will make the space sound better in general for conversations.

    • @williamreinhard
      @williamreinhard 9 месяцев назад +8

      Could even be possible to build a full enclosure to deaden the sound. It's a pretty huge limitation to not be able to use your laser cutter whenever you want.

    This ball came out great! Love the organic look. One thing I do when needing to organize a zillion laser cut parts is to use strips of low-stick painter's tape to tape the pieces into the sheet you cut them from. You apply the strips before taking the sheet out of the laser. That way the original piece acts as an organizer for the parts. You can also leave tiny uncut tabs to keep the parts in place and then trim them loose as needed. That can be very useful for card stock style materials since it also keeps the parts from coming loose and blowing around during the laser cutting process, but can be annoying if you need every edge to be perfect. I love your videos, and your great voice over work.

  • @Attemptedburger
    @Attemptedburger 10 месяцев назад +9

    if you cut down on the laser usage just a little bit more by leaving a small connection between each panel and the sheet it is cut from, you'd be able to flip it over, take a pen and label each panel on the back before clipping it out of the sheet.

  • @lukostello

    Here are a few ideas.
    A ball made from one single strip in the pattern of a spiral.
    Same thing but rather than having one strip come from the pole you could have 2-6.
    You could also make a ball based on a sunflower using the golden ratio to geneate scales to cover the ball with.
    You could do one version where the scales emerge from one pole and another wheere they emerge from both

      At about 2:58 he says he’s getting noise complaints from the neighbors about the laser cutter, and removing the numbers cut the run-time down to a fraction, so it’s in an effort to reduce the disturbance to other people in the building. It is possible, but other factors make it not viable in this situation.

Masking tape labelling each piece to match a key? Anything other than laser etching at all could have labelled the pieces without making noise that annoyed your neighbours.
