when you said the ball looked organic, I immediately thought of a fungus called Clathrus ruber or basket stinkhorn. It has that red outline! When I saw this mushroom (sadly only once) in real life I really thought it was some kind of panelless ball. Would be a cool idea to make a ball based on these types of funky mushrooms.
Could you have marked each panel by hand with a pen while they were still in the laser cutter laid out? Like once you ran the run you could compare to a labeled picture on the computer. Then once you have them matched up with their neighbouring piece you could remove the label with rubbing alcohol
You can make more organic shapes using a voronoi pattern. Place dots on a sphere and each cell is the region nearest to each point. If you placed a point in the middle of each pentagon and hexagon of a regular foot ball, you'd get the foot ball. But you can move the points around, add or subtract points, or push the density to one side. It would be super cool to see a world map with it.
I have a cool idea for a ball! I saw several math papers that show ways to make asymmetric balls using just triangles of the same shape. Look up “Robert Dawson spherical tiling”. I find the (75°, 60°, 60°) tiling of “Tilings of the Sphere with Isosceles Triangles” particularly interesting.
The glowforge fan is incredibly loud. If you had an external aftermarket fan, that would reduce the noise drastically. I have a glowforge and I wasn’t able to be in the same room when it was cutting until I got the aftermarket fan.
Watched one of your shorts and thought for sure it was some craft channel with a million followers I hadn’t heard of…your production quality is great! Good job
Is the laser cutter acoustically isolated from the floor? Usually using high end speaker isolators will take care of a lot of it. Theres a lot of energy loss at the boundary of air and wall so having to do that transition twice will help. Past that limp mass absorbers will help too i bet. Plus absorbers will make the space sound better in general for conversations.
Could even be possible to build a full enclosure to deaden the sound. It's a pretty huge limitation to not be able to use your laser cutter whenever you want.
This ball came out great! Love the organic look. One thing I do when needing to organize a zillion laser cut parts is to use strips of low-stick painter's tape to tape the pieces into the sheet you cut them from. You apply the strips before taking the sheet out of the laser. That way the original piece acts as an organizer for the parts. You can also leave tiny uncut tabs to keep the parts in place and then trim them loose as needed. That can be very useful for card stock style materials since it also keeps the parts from coming loose and blowing around during the laser cutting process, but can be annoying if you need every edge to be perfect. I love your videos, and your great voice over work.
if you cut down on the laser usage just a little bit more by leaving a small connection between each panel and the sheet it is cut from, you'd be able to flip it over, take a pen and label each panel on the back before clipping it out of the sheet.
Here are a few ideas. A ball made from one single strip in the pattern of a spiral. Same thing but rather than having one strip come from the pole you could have 2-6. You could also make a ball based on a sunflower using the golden ratio to geneate scales to cover the ball with. You could do one version where the scales emerge from one pole and another wheere they emerge from both
The first thing I thought of when looking at the badly drawn ball was the way that really clay heavy soils will make a crackling pattern when they dry out.
Congrats on the ArchGrant!! Been watching your vids for ages and had no idea you were in St. Louis (although I remember the STL City pre-game visit). All the best!
Maybe add the links to your different websites in the description. Makes it easier to head over there. Love the design. I'm guessing this is not the one you'll be using for the first 1000 balls though 😄
Please ... Might be a weird ask, but did you ever think to make non spherical balls? I would love to see a D&D (DnD) DICE SET made by you, but for them to be actual, rollable, dice, you can kick to roll.
id like you to use metamorphosis from MC Escher as a ball and any of the ideas from him in general that he was able to draw to show certain mathematical principles
eh, i would of kept the red pen idea more literal. i would of dobbed streaked red dye across flat white leather, leaving behind what looks like red pen doodled white ball. 😂
Hi, have you considered backing the panels with cotton fabric or burlap ? I always see that the stitchings on the balls you make show up alot on the final product and that may be a reason for it. Cheers
Don't compromise for complaining neighbours. If you're working within business hours, and the noise is below a certain decibel, they have nothing to complain about.
Im sure you know this, but check into Math, there is something called Voroni diagram, pretty much the basis for nature shapes, probabbly the explanation of why your ball looks "organic"
There are 1812 ways to make a closed surface from 12 pentagons and 20 hexagons; another 3958 with fewer hexagons. Some look like tortoise shells, or snake heads, or American footballs …
The lot of little individual lines are a weird choice. I'd wanna see some of them connected into bigger single bits. & maybe if it's supposed to look like a drawing, have some lines overshoot their bounds.
What it instead of cutting individual red pieces, you cut it all out of one piece, and sew the white panels into it? The red piece would be like sewing a single panel ball together, with lots of white patches inside.
I had a brilliant idea for a ball but I absolutely cannot explain how it relates to pi so I will explain how it relates to a circle if you get a circle and cut it in half cutting those pieces inhalf technically infinitely you can do the same thing again and make a sphere out of those narrow triangles kinda like two umbrella tops together but more triangles
make a ball consisting of every letter of the alphabet but not more or less, exactly 26 segments, but the sizes of the segments can vary, no need to have them the same size or it could be a different challenge itself. just an idea. hehe
Wouldn't it be possible to use the laser cutter to mark the numbers on the leather, so you don't have to spend ages looking for the right pieces? Just cut from the reverse side and use less power on the laser to mark the numbers.
At about 2:58 he says he’s getting noise complaints from the neighbors about the laser cutter, and removing the numbers cut the run-time down to a fraction, so it’s in an effort to reduce the disturbance to other people in the building. It is possible, but other factors make it not viable in this situation.
I'm unclear on why when the laser cutter was done, why you didn't immediately label all the pieces with anything other than laser etching. Inking pen on the inside of the pieces? Masking tape labelling each piece to match a key? Anything other than laser etching at all could have labelled the pieces without making noise that annoyed your neighbours.
You should try a design with penrose tiles! Or even better, you could use "einsteins" (aka aperiodic monotiles) [Edit] Oh! It looks like you already did one with einsteins!
Make a ball out of the side profile of a spartan helmet🌺maybe in this flower shape ps I tested this on paper literally I just don’t have the material for a ball it work on the pentagons not sure on the hexagons could you name it the Apache noble one and make 13 others called the noble 14 this one being the last one look up the lore please
You know those people who can peel an apple in one continuous band 😂 another non viable ball but wonder how you could get a long thin strip of red that looks like apple skin

the only problem is you would need already curved material to cut out the triangles.
I don't think they were necessarily saying that someone should make a ball using one of those designs, just that people might find them interesting.
@@IsaacMyers1 that seems reasonable to solve tho no?
Oh damn, so kinda like a parker tiling?
piping in sewing is where there's fabric sewn around a rope and they sew it into a seam to make it stiffer or to add detail
Yeah nothing to do with cakes

Your channel is helping me manage my depression. Thank you for sharing your balls with us.
I suspect they meant piping as in upholstery or luggage construction.
Yeah, I agree they probably meant piping in a general sewing context, rather than baking (It’s also a term used in clothing construction)
I thought they meant like plumbing piping lol
As an organizing nerd, separating the red pieces by number of holes to narrow your search was genius.

All the best!
I don’t blame you, I would not listen to this guy and think, oh I bet he lives in Missouri 😂
You might have used a linear strip of red heather and cut and stitch it as you went through, trimming angles to fix the pieces alignment at each step
That ‘M’ poster in your room 👌 And working harder to make something purposefully imperfect is a lot of what good 3D rendering is about
Maybe add the links to your different websites in the description. Makes it easier to head over there.

When I think of piping I think of car interior design. A lot of cars have piping on the seats.
I just realized JP hasn't posted on youtube for a year :( I follow on insta but I miss the longer videos.

You sir are an artist.
Ok this looks incredible.
wait i had no idea you made full videos too, wtf, these’d be way better
Use the piping idea to make a lava ball.
Would it be possible to make a regular pentagon/Hexagon ball but with the shapes bloated in one side and shrunken down in the other? Love your work 🫶
It would be sick if you made a ball with 251 mini panels with an elaborate design
*This Guy got some serious balls.*
I wish you made more videos like this one and less shorts.
Talking time: 89%
Actual work footage: 11%
Using natural sound patterns could be interesting! The Doppler effect could probably be used :)
I'd love to see a video with a skilled player smashing your balls into a goal. Would be super interesting to see the flight trajectories.
Surely you can put a lot of soundproofing panels around the cutter?
You know that MC Escher piece with the interlocking lizards? Bet that would look cool as a ball.
Have you ever considered kits? Pre-cut panels, thread etc?
The way you narrate your videos makes it seem as if you’re changing the world.
Don't compromise for complaining neighbours. If you're working within business hours, and the noise is below a certain decibel, they have nothing to complain about.
Have you made a ball of Penrose kites and darts yet? I'd really like to see that.
Im sure you know this, but check into Math, there is something called Voroni diagram, pretty much the basis for nature shapes, probabbly the explanation of why your ball looks "organic"
That what ur doing its amazing! All your stuff. The best thing ever

Please, you should do more videos than tiktoks/shorts
You should be able to use the laser cutter in day time hours!
I’ve never watched or had any interest in soccer…. 😂 but will watch your videos whenever they pop up.
The lot of little individual lines are a weird choice. I'd wanna see some of them connected into bigger single bits.

Would love to see a ball made of poisson disc samples creating a voronoi pattern
...thiught the joke was him was talking to himself ngl
It looks like the pattern on turtle shells, or like some giraffes where they're spots are really big and almost connect.
That looks so cool
As a pe teacher in the states I would love to see how you would or if you could replace a broken bladder in a ball
he has in the past in one of his shorts. he just took out one pentagon, ripped out the bladder, replaced it and stitched the panels back on
@@-aexc- thank you! I’ll be looking
I love these videos but I really can't help saying "haha balls" everytime he says it
The organic object you are looking for is a truffle. It looks like a white truffle
Have you made a checker board patterned ball?
bro i gotta question, how do u put in the last patch to make all the seams on the inside?
It’s wicked cool!
The ball you draw when you were a kid.

Could you try to make a ball with as few seams as possible?
shinola said put a clock facing the cam in every detroit shot 😭
Maybe this is just me, but this made me think of Wilson from Castaway! 😅😜
You should make a deltoidal hexacontahedron ball!
hey, you might want to add a link to your website in the description.
make a ball consisting of every letter of the alphabet but not more or less, exactly 26 segments, but the sizes of the segments can vary, no need to have them the same size or it could be a different challenge itself. just an idea. hehe
also the valve should be the center of the letter o .
Hi, have you ever made a ball which isslightly heavier on one side than the other?
This channels balls!
Why not mark the numbers on the pieces with the laser cutter on the backside of the leather?
Bro what is the glue you are using please reply
Wouldn't it be possible to use the laser cutter to mark the numbers on the leather, so you don't have to spend ages looking for the right pieces? Just cut from the reverse side and use less power on the laser to mark the numbers.

You could just make Voronoy Poligons on a sphere and make it into a ball
Reminds me of a collectible from a ps2 game
Why did the bounce height video and some others suddenly go private? I was watching it and suddenly it was gone.
How about a dinosaur/dragon scale pattern ball?🐲🦖

Collab with the company mschf, I bet they would love the idea of this or something similar
Is it possible to make a 1 panel ball?
Is it possible to make an square ”ball”?
Have you done a Burberry or other luxury brands ball? Could be fun
