- So often people ask me how old is too old to get a helicopter license. In this video I walk you through my thoughts on how old is too old to fly a helicopter.

Didn't start the course until I was 60 and I have not looked back (or counted the cost) since.
I’m 48, have 52 hours and planning on checkride at end of summer. You’re never too old!! Life is short, enjoy it!!
Awesome!!! I'm glad you accomplishing your dream of flying!!👍 I am 56 I have been studying and often take 1 hr here 1 hour there of flight training ( not logged or in a course, ground school etc) my uncle owned a Queen Air C90...and since the late 70s early 80s I got the aviation bug!! Unfortunately I didn't have the funds or stability to concentrate on getting and passing my PPL..but now I have the money and time and will enroll in ground school in 2 weeks.!! It's never too late! Good luck on your check ride!
@@carloscortes5570 good luck..you’ll have a blast!
@@carloscortes5570 started when I was 54, got my private SEL 2 years ago, working on rotary 😎🚁🤙🏻🛩️
@@picopilot awesome!!
Yes, agreed
Some of us don't want a job flying , but are going to buy our own aircraft for fun. Thanks for the post.
I’m in the uk. I’m 57 and about 90% through my ppl/h. I’ve done 6 hours solo and loving it. When I get my license I’m going to hire by the hour can’t wait. Keep learning, keep the mind going and keeping fit for your medical. 👍
I am 64. I passed PPL(H) 5 weeks ago. Never too old!
Well done Graham Mills!!
I know a pilot who’s still got his license and flying his own Cessna 150 at 81! Just goes to show
Well done, good recovery Sir, I'm 55 and I live in hope. 🧐
I am 37 and I don’t have the money but I will not stop dreaming flying is my passion as long as I can remember
You talking to me?
Hahaha I happen to be 73,
thanks for the encouragement
I'm wheelchair bound so flying in a helicopter I thought wasn't possible esp with both paralysed. But I've now done two practical lessons in an R44 and if helicopters could be modified, I have the funds to buy my own and lessons too. I have absolutely loved these machines all my life. I dream of getting my restricted RPL one fine day🤞🤞 🇦🇺
Go for it, I passed my PPL(H) at 50, I now have 167 hours flyng a Schweizer 300CBI and it's been a fantastic experience, sadly my flying school are selling the Schweizer 😭 ( I will miss her) so now I have to learn how to fly the schools Robinson R44 😁.
I was 50 when I passed my PPL flight test. I accept that I'm too old to be an airline pilot but have never ruled out a CPL. There are lots of things I could do: glider towing, skydiving, flight instruction, aerial photography, more. All for fun. Because I like flying, not because I'm grimly building hours until I can get my real job.
I have a trial lesson in a Cabri G2 tomorrow and I’m 49. Excited!
Awesomeness 👌
Hi Misha! My oldest student was 76!!! He is still flying right now!
Oh ...thank you ♡ I feel like this is something I need in my life. I'm 34.
Go after it !! No regrets
🇺🇸😎🚬
I definitely curbed my pilot dream because of your last video as I was 32 at the time. The idea was to transition out of game development into some form of work as a pilot.
So then I transitioned back into my passion for music. But I didn't give up on the dream of being a pilot, the idea you mentioned here about it being a sort of hobbyist type flyer is still very much a desirable thing. So I'll see you in due time!
Need to keep both mind and body in good shape. Pass the physical and then, get going for that licence to enjoy the thrill of flying!
Just started to learn with r22 , 15hrs. I'm late of 50s at this year.
This's my passion since when I was at 7yrs old.
I don't thought even get job with flight, but just wanted fly.
Really appreciate this video! Outstanding!!! I really do believe you are a credit to aviation!
Yeah - i turn 50 next year (Feb) and i still want to learn to fly a heli.
For my 60th b day I decided to get my heli PPL. A year later finished that training in the mountains of Colorado. I'm 63 and will live to 120. That's a long time to be sitting on ones rear end. So I suggest you Get off the age subject and focus on health and good hand eye coordination. Automated Drones are going to take over anyway and yes, you'll be out of a job, unless you adjust your mindset. Haha! BTW, I love what you do. Keep it up buddy.
Fantastic work. That’s great to hear.
Seventy-Three here. I have a real passion for flying helis. I have enjoyed flying on the simulation software of X-Plane for more than four years. I fly looking into a 65 inch 4k display up close together with $4000 plus helicopter flight control hardware (which is not made anymore). I think it is very realistic. But, I never been in the real thing. So it is impossible for me to say for sure. Knowing my limitations, even not considering my advanced age, I concluded it would not be prudent to pursue a license. After viewing this video though, it gave me encouragement in that I could still experience flight with an instructor aboard as long as (of course) I am willing to foot the cost. Great, well thought out and informative video. I have watched many of your videos and I have learned a lot from you and your instruction. The videos have helped me fly on the simulator using good sense and safe procedures. Thank you Mischa, for giving me some hope of maybe experiencing authentic heli flight someday. Blessings to you and family - Tom
I enjoyed16 hrs R44 time when I was 54 (already had a few R22 hours) and although it went really well, I remember being overwhelmed with everything happening fast, and questioned was that normal, or was my age catching up with me. Now at 58, I'm sure its a bit of both, in my case at least. I'm retired and can't afford the real flights now to pursue a license, but I'm loving flying with virtual reality headsets in FS2020, DCS and X-Plane. What I learned in those 16 real flight hours really expanded my enjoyment in the sim. VR is immersive enough to make me airsick, and Autorotation, VRS, ETL, torque limits etc exist to keep it interesting. I'm glad you talk about human factors and such on your videos. We should strive for political correctness but it's essential to get the safety aspects across regardless.
This is great news as I am 48 years old. Very encouraging indeed brother. Thanks for sharing your experience and knowledge with us today. Sorry we haven't been able to visit you for a while we have been busy moving house etc. But great to catch up with you again. See you soon.
As a 40 year old, father of 4, living in an area where there are no rotorwing flight training schools nearby (that I can find) and the only helicopters around are gov't... the practicality of getting a license and flying are low. Maybe someday though! Would be a dream to pilot!
Come stay kn Abby, and learn at BCHelicopters AND....AND appear in Pilot Yellow!
Juste saying it seemed obvious to me which angle you were taking on the référence video but good for you to get things straight. And thx for those vidéos they are vers informative.
thanks for the validation, Misha!! I'm 53 and I've dreamed about this since my dad told my 17 year old self that I couldn't go into the U.S. Coast Guard to learn to fly helicopters. I've thought about getting a license but the $15K US is pretty tough nut to crack for me. After listening to you, though, I realize spending $300 for an intro lesson - even just by itself - is perfectly fine and a good first step. Yeah... not the most efficient to obtain a license, but it is worth it to just fly in the helicopter.
(BTW, I've downloaded the FAA handbook and I'm memorizing as fast as I can :b It is so geeky -- I love it!)
I did my PPL at the age of 43, never owned an aircraft by myself and only enjoyed flying a few hours a year just for the fun of it.
Now, at 53, I put it aside because currently I'm not willing to put the mental effort and the necessary time it takes to fly safely into this hobby.
But who knows, maybe in a few years, I'd get back to it, do a refresher training and renew my type rating.
And even if not. Just learning to fly literally opened up new horizons to me and got me into contact with a whole new species: pilots :)
And although flying helicopters is possibly the most expensive hobby you can have (besides of also owning one), it's worth every penny.
So to anybody who can afford it and at any age: Get into the cockpit, take a ride and decide, if this could be something for you.
Yes Sir Micha next year I turn 70 years old was still flying 2018 at Mallorca R 22 and 2019 as well R 22 + R 44 first 🥇🤠 time in my life, I'm from Germany fly only inkl. Safety Pilot did my Solo's 1990 US - startet 1977 after Skydiving .

Oh sorry, I got a little over 100 hours inkl. my very best over 20 in Bell 47 at Solo ... !
I am 60 and I am at 29 hrs ( 3 hrs Solo) and I enjoy it a lot.
Hi Mischa, good subject! Just for the "record": my oldest student in a fixed wing aircraft happened to be 93! Very nice gentleman, got his medical ok but always took me as a safety pilot. And he was able to fly the aircraft quite well at PPL level. This was around 1987. Just do what you love and live life to the max :-). Best regards, Boy from the Netherlands
Life begins at 40 That's when I took my first discovery flight At 47 I'm a commercial pilot with my own business 🙂
I was actually thinking of a career change myself at 43 to a helicopter pilot (from a software developer). How are you liking it so far?
I'd like to hear more of this story as well. Aviation seems so hard in Australia. Where are you based tell us your story please.
You are an inspiration! Thank you for sharing!
I see you're in Texas and run wildlife mgmt and hunting experiences with your R22. Location and some flight diversity help. Seems like the majority of work in my area is scenic flights.
@@brichardson1080 I really enjoy it It was always a dream of mine and so far I have not been disappointed
I buddy how's it going ok hope you and family are well. Philip is 58 now and I used to dream at night about becoming a pilot and having my own helicopter.i wish you were back in the UK so my pal could teach me how to fly I think you are awesome. Or may be I could come out to Canada to meet you and your family and to become a pilot under your wing.what a dream that would be for me. You take care buddy you are awesome and keep safe philip. Are you flying airoplanes? yet phil.
Bro....you're awesome and thank you. Fan of Bill Burr. I live in LA. Always around "The Store" and about to embark doing stand-up. 52 years old....recently divorced....finding my "next life." I want to learn to fly. Not a new interest. I just happen to have some $$$$ now and want to experience and grow within life. Suggestions? I live near Van Nuys Airport. I know I could do my own research but there is nothing like a referral and advice. Thank you.....thank you.
My father started flying at 50 and fulfilled his dream to fly. Never too old to start!
I'm 55 in five days. I just started looking at going for it. I must say the way you put your videos together really tells me that I need to do it. You are a wonderful teacher. Come to Ga. and teach me. Thank you. I just need to find a good place here. Any suggestions?
I am 62 years old and the son of a pilot fixed-wing. IFly the Microsoft flight simulator and really enjoy flying the r44 the most. Cheers from Regina Saskatchewan PS I have nine and a half hours fixed-wing before I lost my leg to cancer above the knee. I'm curious how old you are Micha?
I am 50 to be pilot my dream still. Thanks for the motivation.
Yes, indeed, things are lining up for me. I'll be flying before long. I'd love to fly in those beautiful mountains you have there and am looking hard at the HX50, so may be seeing you later.
Always safty and for Fun!!! Teach me ( us )
Great vid , never to old to do a dream .
You are never to become a commercial helicopter pilot. I started in 2016 and am now flying commercially. It's been hard but worth it, but hard work has not killed anybody. LOL
Many operators (Canada) look at hours not age, and often age is on your side.
My motto is: I am too old to die so I think I am more careful than young guys. :)
Keep the rotors spinning
Much interested pilot yellow
One day👏🏻
Are there helicopter simulators where people from the public can go to get a feel for whats its like to control a helicopter?
I like your videos
In the US you can get flying jobs at 70 as long as you can pass the physical, except EMS jobs may not hire you.
.. what about the oldest for being a commercial pilot?
45...here.... Pilot Yellow #1 fan I am
Pleasure...My pleasure... Helicopters
Turning 62 on Sunday have followed you for a couple of years, am i to old to fly a Helicopter???
I am 50 years old but I have always been interested in helicopter pilot. I still want to learn. I just can't afford it. I wish I did have the $$$
Blessings to You My brother...

I have a US commercial for a fix wing and a few hours under my belt. How can or can I use those hours in Canada to help get my Canadian helicopter license?
How important is eye sight? Does one need 20/20 or is wearing glasses ok?
Very proud of you sir for your words of ENCOURAGEMENT to people!! 🇺🇸😎🚬
( I don't smoke.. that's just an emoji )
I was about to go amok about you contradicting yourself, but then you
very quickly specified the difference.
I'm 100 and still flying. Not! :-) Look, if you're healthy, and alert then go for it.
hi .. I am from Malaysia. Sunny and rain whole year round - I am curious to know about the schedule of the copter flying course - is it held at all year round or is it off on certain season like winter .. tQ
Hello sir.
Good morning.
I am a working man from India. Want to be a commercial pilot and want to learn flying skills from you.
But I don't have so much money and flying course in India is also very expensive.
Tell me if there is another way to get CPL and how much it will cost in your country when I Will get these skills from you?
Thanking you.
Never give up on your dreams.
Do you know of a good place to learn in Colorado?
We are too poor to learn to fly
Hi, I almost found you, I really like what you're doing, bravo! I have one question, what are the medical conditions for a pilot's license? For example, I have a slightly higher diopter, I have a car license, I underwent an ophthalmological examination, I am not blind haha, but the diopter is higher. Is it possible to get a condition for flying school? Thanks a lot for the reply!
I'm not too old to become a helicopter pilot......just too broke! Thank goodness for MFS2020 flight sim!
The way Mischa talks about flying helicopters,
I already feel that I can fly. And I cannot fly any kind of aircraft.
But i AM too BROKE!

Can you get a LAS license and still fly a helicopter and I’m not talking about a part 103 Mesquite
No not old to old just. Need. Big
Big. Bucks

I 'm ready for a lesson and age is closer to retired than just starting out....but it's just for fun
Age may not matter however mileage does. I’m only 30 but because of my previous career my body couldn’t handle the discomfort of a helicopter. If you have a bad back, flying 🚁 is NOT for you regardless of your age.
I strongly disagree, I think you can be 70 and still get a flying job as long as you are in good shape, my mission is to completely blow this theory out of the water, age doesn’t matter as long as you can stay fit. The stubborn part of me wants to to difficult challenges, helicopters are a challenge!
I want to learn to fly so bad.
AirWolf lol
I was 55 when I started, but it wasn't helicopters.
Oh I'm not too old, I just have no skill and throw up when maneuvering 😁
Nope, just too poor.
