With the amount of times Fir accidentally says "forgetful" in place of "forgettable", it makes me think a lot of these moons have difficulties remembering their keys and wallets rather than making no impression.
I’ve always wanted to know what Fir’s favorite, least favorite, 69th favorite, and 373rd favorite moons are! Thanks for the documentary, it’s for real super well done, and I loved it all
Which is actually fairly important for whichever seed ends up on the northwest pot, as that one will end up taking a full hour to grow, I believe, rather than the usual 20 minutes.
I cannot accurately describe how much of a towering achievement this video is for your channel, Fir. I don’t even want to know how much planning and editing and revising and this took. I mean, Odyssey Central’s crack at this idea was already really impressive, but you managed to provide even more detail to most moons, an introspection on every kingdom as a whole, a tier list alongside a ranking at the end, and solid editing throughout all 4 hours. This has to be one of the most impressive projects on this platform.
My biggest issue with the 500 coin moon in Deep Woods is the fact that this concept isn’t repeated anywhere else. It *feels* like a recurring moon, but it’s the only place in the entire game where that capture actually has a use. I saw that area and knew something had to be done there, but couldn’t figure it out until I saw an all moons speedrun.
i figured it out immediately but after throwing like 200 coins in i decided it clearly wasn't anything important, maybe just a cute little easter egg. i later googled what it was all about and found out i had to throw a bunch more money in. fun times
I really like how you mentioned that even the filler moons can all come together to create a fun and rewarding exploration system, because I totally agree. The worlds feel so much more fun to run around in when you have moons just sitting around to find and collect, even if they are super lame in a vacuum.
All human understanding is based on comparison. We can't understand good without seeing bad. An experience cannot be full-throttle start to finish; that would be exhausting. The middling, waste of time moons create lows that accentuate the highs. We love the good moons more because we see what bad moons can be. If Mario Odyssey had deleted all of the bad moons, it would have been a worse experience.
I've been saying that 15/50 would make so much more sense that the 15/100 for hero of the beach for so long. Hearing you say it makes me feel so validated. Really enjoyed the video, wish I could sub to you a second time!
Hey Fir, thanks for the video. You missed to mention something when ranking "Top of a Dune" (Sand Kingdom #17): There is a cute way to discover this moon (and I found it this way originally): When you capture a Moe-Eye and put on the shades, you see a glow in the distance where the moon is. I love this so much.
I found this for another ground pound moon in Moon cave but never noticed it for on Top of the Dune. It's a neat addition but I still generally dislike the invisible ground pound moons
@@breaddatisbreadIt's not a stupid idea, it's just a poorly executed idea. Could've definitely designed moons where it's interesting to use Moeyes to see them. But they didn't.

@Lovely_Bean_ It teaches them that moons exist, what they look like, that they're spread around the map in varying locations, that you need them to progress, and what you should be looking out for in general when seeking them out. It's a tutorial level. It's not supposed to be teaching you trick jumps, variable platforming, or unique puzzles yet. Cap Kingdom taught you the basic mechanics of movement and world interaction, Cascade Kingdom teaches you the basic mechanics of goal-based progression. That's practically essential for a video game this complex aimed at young kids. Cascade treats Moons like other kingdoms treat Moon Shards. Because, in that kingdom, they serve the same effective function as a Moon Shard. It's only in Sand Kingdom where they put up the curtain and say "Okay, now you get what you're doing and why you're doing it. Here's where it comes together. Good luck."
I just want you to know how good I sleep listening to this. I keep coming back to it whenever I’m restless. Your voice, the listing off stuff, all perfect for a good nights sleep.
Fantastic video, kept me entertained for an entire glove (crocheting), my only wish is that the list at the end had the letter/rank displayed as well. Great stuff!
For real, genuinely a great way to express the overall poor design and execution of the Toadette moons. 1 at a time, pointless filler, and none are even really unique. Toadette is possibly my least favorite part of the game.
Going through these like this helps me to see that the point of Cap Kingdom is to be a tutorial for SMO's unique movement, while Cascade Kingdom is a tutorial for how collecting stars works. That would explain why the moons from those two kingdoms are both very easy, even superficially so, but in different ways. Each moon in Cap Kingdom helps you learn to move, each moon in Cascade Kingdom teaches you about the kinds of puzzles you'll experience to get moons.
Technically you're not really meant to get any moons in cap kingdom until you beat the game bc you'll have no reason to go back and there aren't any moons until you go back so it's not really a tutorial for moving
I’ve been really looking forward to this video!!! Thank you for doing it! I can’t imagine how long it took to plan out and record all the video. It’s a great video to listen to while painting. So thank you again!

16:10 The thing is, that moon was made for you to triple jump, as those steps appear as one set a bit earlier in the kingdom, with a sign telling you about triple jumping.
The moon in Lake Kingdom on the Little Pillar is pretty great imo. An unremarkable spot, that still sticks out. You won't find it, if you don't search in such places. And since you don't need every moon to beat the game, it's a nice reward for players trying to find as much secrets as possible.
As a wannabe game designer I actually really like On Top of the Rubble because it shows that the devs understand their intended audience: children with limited patience. Your initial Cascade visit isn’t meant to be an open-world tour like most Kingdoms that come after-it’s given a sense of urgency. You’re given a task by a frantic NPC, and children are more likely to help NPCs when they ask for it. You need 5 Moons to fix the ship. You get Our First Power Moon to introduce yourself to the concept, you fight Ma Broodal to introduce Multi-Moons, and you need a fifth Moon so you can fix the ship and go to the next kingdom right away, where you spend a significantly longer time. The Moon on Top of the Rubble is placed in an obvious location on purpose so kids don’t feel stressed out when they’re so close to their goal. From there, they can work their way up to the more complex puzzles.
I agree, it serves a really important purpose. But this ranking is mostly about how enjoyable or interesting Fir finds it, rather than how good it is from a game design perspective or the millions of other possible perspectives
bro forgets not everyone is a god gamer like him with the "too easy" moons. odyssey is for everyone, but still glad to know some of the moons I struggle with are also hated by speed runners
1:49:06 iirc, the map is a brochure that tells you stuff about the world. It has some if not all the answers to the questions. If it's just some, I think some npcs talk about her
as someone with very scattered mario odyssey knowledge who mostly followed the low% captures category (all about using cappy as little as possible and only getting the moons needed to progress the run), i was entirely unaware of a majority of these moons before this video. and im having the time of my life watching it and learning about all of them, so :3 great work, just, really engaging
2:18:59 okay, I think you should at the very least bump this up to B+ purely for the reference it is. For those who don’t know, this is the exact chest layout as the one in Mario 64 in dire dire docks. And considering the beach cave area, it’s more than def a reference to that original star.
7:05 I remember at one point me and my sister were trying to collect all the moons, she would play and I would read her descriptions on how to find the moons. She was better at the game than me except for the Koopa races. I always felt so cool doing the Koopa races for her
Volleyball 100 is literally the only moon i am missing. My high score was 70-something and i have refused to go abck and try again ever since failing that run
I just thought of a video idea For you You may actually like this one. Super Mario Odyssey, but Koopa free free-running is always Active That's basically Where You're trying to beat the game. Before the Koopas do. So you're racing against the Koopas. To the end of the game. Maybe you could add some other twist. Cause seems kind of easy but still.
Hey fir, i have a challenge submission. It's called Super Mario Geographic. To complete it, you must document 52 ( or more ) creatures. But theres a catch! It can only be interactable creatures. Here are some examples: cap people, goombas, t-rex, broodals and wiggler. Examples of non interactable creatures: birds, bugs and mice. You must make scientific names and explanations to how they do what they do. For example: lifosa colaris. It can extend its body legth using small inflatable segments inside its tail. It can only extend for a small time due to it needing more air to inflate these segments.
good video, lost kingdom was my favorite ever since I first picked up this game. The smaller size and verticality allows for skips like in the koopa freerunning and reminds me of something like whomps
You missed that in order for Peach to appear in a kingdom you must get world peace in that kingdom, making it another reward for world peace. I always liked that aspect of Peach’s moons. edit: everything here on is an edit added while watching the video 11:36 “I wish they played a small theme like that one star in Mario Galaxy” ah yes, the one time the notes in Mario Galaxy played a small theme So far Fir has yet to talk about the importance of teaching new players using early moons, or the subtle storytelling from moons (like lost in the luggage) (or thanks for the charge. I always loved the story telling of that one)
While I don’t disagree with your rankings, I am a little surprised that some of the common “Any %” moons got ranked lower for being boring. Ones that might be boring to find from a player’s perspective, but are on your path in a speedrun, are always nice to get if you want to leave the kingdom earlier, and I was expecting some moons to get bumped up to slightly higher rankings for that.
I like how you play through like 7 different games' credits music to go through all the moons at the end. Really gives you some perspective of just how MANY MOONS there are 😅
I know this is small but I really appreciate how Fir repeatedly says “the MOST intended way”. It really highlights how creative you can get with these moons which is what makes this game so special.
Real, speedrunners never do that
How creative can you get with the thousand moons for planting seeds or doing a ground pound
With the amount of times Fir accidentally says "forgetful" in place of "forgettable", it makes me think a lot of these moons have difficulties remembering their keys and wallets rather than making no impression.
Also, isn't Fir a native English speaker? Because for me, English is my second language and even I noticed Fir mixed up forgettable and forgetful.

Yeah, I had to look up most of the Hint Art, especially the Dark Side ones
1:49:06 iirc, the map is a brochure that tells you stuff about the world. It has some if not all the answers to the questions. If it's just some, I think some npcs talk about her
holy gosh darn heck 4 hours!? good job man
RUclipsr Odyssey Central did it in only 2 hours and 36 minutes
@@micahheyward5342his vid was amazing
Odyssey central did the bare minimum, fir’s is way better in my opinion
Bro really spent all his time on this video. What a legend. Love your vids btw
Congrats on your Mario Odyssey doctoral thesis lol. Will be saving this for this weekend for when I tackle cleaning my room
as someone with very scattered mario odyssey knowledge who mostly followed the low% captures category (all about using cappy as little as possible and only getting the moons needed to progress the run), i was entirely unaware of a majority of these moons before this video. and im having the time of my life watching it and learning about all of them, so :3 great work, just, really engaging
I remember the streams for this, so excited that it's out
Love the effort Fir!!!!!!!!!! Your
patience is extremely impressive!!!!!!!!!! Proud of You!!!!!!!!!!
My spelling isn't the best. 😅
Saying this took 8 months of time while posting 19 videos in that span is insane, major props
It took me a while to get through the whole thing, but great video! (:
2:18:59 okay, I think you should at the very least bump this up to B+ purely for the reference it is. For those who don’t know, this is the exact chest layout as the one in Mario 64 in dire dire docks. And considering the beach cave area, it’s more than def a reference to that original star.
THANK YOU FIR. My day has been rough but this brightens it up quite a lot. I love your content in general but 4hrs of it is a blessing. THANKS
I hope the rest of your day is as wonderful as you are, random stranger on the internet
@@BaalFridge wow thank you so much, that really means a lot to me random stranger c:
The clown outfit while slowly going to sleep for the Toadette moons lmao
9:43 Fir is officially a time traveler
IKR.💀
7:05 I remember at one point me and my sister were trying to collect all the moons, she would play and I would read her descriptions on how to find the moons. She was better at the game than me except for the Koopa races. I always felt so cool doing the Koopa races for her
omg a 4 hour video, I'm gonna be watching this all through next week
I’ll call it. Worst is the Volleyball
100 and the best is darker side!
Coin cougher moon exists
I say the badest Mons are the flying sphynx and Taxi
Volleyball 100 is literally the only moon i am missing. My high score was 70-something and i have refused to go abck and try again ever since failing that run
@@TheCodysbiggestfan same here, I hate that moon
@@TheCodysbiggestfan try 2 player mode
The fact that fir has the mental fortitude for this is absolutely insane.
I just thought of a video idea For you
You may actually like this one.
Super Mario Odyssey, but Koopa free free-running is always Active
That's basically Where You're trying to beat the game.
He kinda did a similar idea with the birdwatch% challenge
I've got a certain amount of fondness for the taxi/sphinx in distance moons. They're like a shitpost romhack moon but in the actual game.
This has become a comfort video for me.
Oh boy this is gonna be fun 😃
Volleyball 100 better be last 😂
good video, lost kingdom was my favorite ever since I first picked up this game. The smaller size and verticality allows for skips like in the koopa freerunning and reminds me of something like whomps
You missed that in order for Peach to appear in a kingdom you must get world peace in that kingdom, making it another reward for world peace. I always liked that aspect of Peach’s moons.
edit: everything here on is an edit added while watching the video
11:36 “I wish they played a small theme like that one star in Mario Galaxy” ah yes, the one time the notes in Mario Galaxy played a small theme
So far Fir has yet to talk about the importance of teaching new players using early moons, or the subtle storytelling from moons (like lost in the luggage) (or thanks for the charge. I always loved the story telling of that one)
@Fir both you and your editor deserve a GG the must have been a lot of work and I really enjoyed it :)
“SO CUTE.” Dunbledore Said Calmly. 55:02
4:12:01 WHAT THERE IS A DRAGON IN DARKER SIDE?!?!
I wish
Oh my gosh, it's been so long since I last saw a brand new comment pop up 😭
This is so interesting, no one would have every thought of this
3:33:55 sorry gotta remember my spot 😅
Nice to watch on my sleepy day off
Lake kingdom got snubbed 😭
I like how you play through like 7 different games' credits music to go through all the moons at the end. Really gives you some perspective of just how MANY MOONS there are 😅
