Every praise that Hereditary and Midsommar got should have gotten to the Apostle. Just the purification scene alone was bone-chilling. No BGM, just the sounds of him dying. I've rarely seen hate-crimes against the mentally ill in horror movies, usually it's the other way around, so I'm glad for a change of pace but terrified at the same time. There's also a very clear theme of industrialization (and colonization), of not just the earth, but the people too.
The cultists aren't just using the mother nature figure as a machine (to yield better crops, a la unsustainable industrial farming practices), but they're literally paying for it with the peoples blood, using them as mere resources or fuel for the "machine". By the end, Quinn was even going to use women's bodies as a machine, reducing them to biological factories.
Being set in 1905 is such an appropriate setting, given the state of industrialization at the time, at full capacity in England, and still spreading and expanding in the US from the settler-colonized east, out into the more "wild" west, finalizing the slaughter of the indigenous population, and colonizing even their own peoples, replacing local/family farmsteads with industrial agriculture, factories, horrific and dangerous wage-labour, etc...
(Check out "The Jungle", for a great exploration of this. It's set in the Chicago Stockyards in the 1890s, and it's .f. u. c. k. e. d... The book was actually the reason the FDA was formed. fun fact!)
These outsiders (in the movie) stumbled onto this island and completely misunderstood its way of life and how to peacefully coexist within it, and imposed their own violent misinterpretations, initially on the local animals living there in harmony, and then turning that to their own people. At first, merely by bloodletting (LITERALLY making the villagers pay to survive with their blood) but then by killing and sacrificing them, LITERALLY feeding people into a machine (to forcefeed nature into producing more than its able)...
Like, it can't get any more on the nose.
(Though, as if to just come right out and say it, they make the protagonist backstory be that he was a colonizer sent to China to convert the populace to Christianity.)
When even slaughter wasn't enough, they still persisted in their ways, and were going to not just send people to their deaths to feed the great machine, but were going to start literally farming them, turning women into breeding animals and people into livestock, bred purely for the slaughter, churning out life as a raw resource, to be burned and consumed without any regard for them.
Nature just becomes a resource to them, then animals, then people. All being churned out for maximal output, dehumanized and exploited and disregarded, like machines whose only worth is their raw output, what they can provide and produce...

What I love about good filmmakers is that you can always see flecks of their previous works appear in their body of films. For Gareth Evans, it shows up in this period piece religious horror film in the fight scenes that while nowhere near as grandiose as The Raid films, still becomes apparent in that he uses steady cam to film them clinically and his fights have quick, visceral almost-primal feels to them.
It's just a little thing I've noticed. Lol

I enjoyed the movie. While i don't need each and every question answered, I still dont understand...if the 3 men have imprisoned the goddess, how is she able to be under the floorboards of the rooming house slurping up blood? (The other sightings of her i could accept as just an apparition, i guess). Second, exactly HOW was she imprisoned? Are we to assume Malcolm and his crew wrapped her up in this sort of root cage? If she could impale the guards near the end of the film...why the hell couldn't she impale Malcolm and Co. when she realized they were abusing her? Third, was the "Grinder" a servant of the goddess or of the cult? (If the goddess, why would he even allow her to be imprisoned and misused?) This movie was like a damn 1990s Tool music video. Finally, WHHHHHOOOOO put the red dot on Thomas' invitation at the beginnning of the movie? SOMEBODY knew he was the infiltrator from the jump? Right? RIGHT? (And yes, im gonna post these question on every "movie explained" video until i get some answers, dammit) Thank you for your time 😊

    • @William.scarth
      @William.scarth 6 лет назад +65

I can help you with at least ONE of those questions. Thomas's invitation was sent to his father personally by the cult, in order to allow him to access the island. However, they put the red dot on it to indicate to them the one that comes with that invitation, is identifiable as whoever the father sends with the ransom money. While to me, this brings up even more questions, such as (Why not send something completely different than a marked "standard" invitation, why not check everyone's bag when they come onto the ship, did Thomas ever actually BRING the ransom money?) This movie had an incredible amount of holes and unanswered questions, but I really enjoyed it regardless.

I interpreted it as the goddess already being in the tree cage thing, as the men found the carvings/paintings when they arrived before they misinterpreted them - which suggests that she must have been there already. However that does still beg the question how and why the goddess was in a barn-like structure, or whether the goddess created that herself by maybe looking at other structures when she "arrived"?

I just watched this movie and I think at the end, the boy Derek was transported back to that dimension where the main character killed him, so he won't be coming back plus they burned the house down. I would love for him to do a video on it though!

This helped me to understand a bit more, but what I came to find out was more on the Goddess and her purpose on the island. Foundflix' commentator speaks so quickly and even with the closed captioning, I'm still not quite grasping what's going on.
I get the Quinn and company violated the Goddess by capturing her and making her work for them. We aren't told how they managed to capture her so I'll move on from that. The wall paintings aren't clear even when I freeze frame them.
I understand that by force feeding the Goddess it put her appetite in overdrive and even though she doesn't want to eat the blood and mangled bits once it touches her mouth she hungrily eats it. Which I guess makes her angry and throws off her goodwill for the island.
So, what I don't get is, what was the tribute or sacrifice the Goddess actually wanted? Did she even want blood at all? Or did she just want the people to live in peace and to be righteous and devoted to her and each other? Then when people die they are buried on the island and the dead become the tribute? Can anyone clear this up? Also, the Grinder, where did he come from? Has he always been on the island? He looks like a demented Jack Skellington from Halloween Town. Any ideas?

I feel like this movie was inspired by Outlast. I’m not complaining, but I definitely get the same vibe from the both of them.

Thanks for the analysis. I just watched this movie again bc it was pretty darn good.
I’m still confused about this ending though-
Why did Thomas chase Frank into the forest? Thomas wanted to kill the goddess anyways, so what was the reason he was chasing after Frank for? They both had the same intentions.
How did the grinder guy get the gun away from Frank and shoot him so fast? I mean, Frank doesn’t need to be up close to the grinder to shoot the grinder creature thing...
Did Quinn want the goddess dead or alive? Bc he tried to shoot that grinder guy but missed, but who’s side is the grinder on anyways?
The grinder was trying to force feed the goddess meat and blood and not trying to help her escape or anything. But isn’t that what Quinn wanted too? If so, why did he shoot at the grinder then?
Then Malcom tried to stop Quinn from shooting the grinder guy, but then later Quinn said he was going to use those girls for babies & give them to the goddess every year.. so does that mean Quinn didn’t want the goddess dead? And if the grinder guy was doing what Quinn wanted (keeping the goddess a prisoner), why did quinn try to shoot grinder guy?
I’m just confused about that whole situation. Who is the grinder creature guy supposed to be? Is it human or did it come with the goddess?
Since grinder guy was trying to shove meat and blood down the goddess’s throat with a funnel and it wasn’t trying to help her escape or be free, does that mean it’s her enemy?
Why wouldn’t the girls just carry Thomas to the boat? It’s not like the island was gonna explode or anything, those villagers literally had a lot of time to leave, they could have even stayed a while longer....they didn’t even have to leave so quickly on the boat. Only the village was on fire, not the entire island. They all could have just waited for the fires to go out if they wanted to.
I know that Thomas was given the “powers” by Goddess lady, but he didn’t even realize that he had them until after the boat left. So he wasn’t staying behind because of the new “powers”.
    Thanks :)

when he shot at the grinder, it seemed to me like he was deliberately missing just to see if the grinder flinched or reacted at all or to see if it would try to come after him, since he smiled cruelly after that when the grinder didnt react, but he also didnt attempt to shoot him again even after missing him

and i think thomas was chasing frank more to make sure he was able or actually going to kill her, without anyone else stopping him before they were able to do so. and frank was shooting at thomas either because he didnt know thomas also had the same goal, or he was simply so panicked that he didnt realize it was thomas behind him, and not someone like quinn.
as for the leaving thomas behind thing, it was shown right before that a GIANT trail of his blood. showing that he had lost too much to survive a very slow rowboat to the mainland.
and the last rowboat was about to leave even as the girls ran up to it. if they had been dragging thomas along with them, it may have slowed them down enough that the boat would have left without them, thinking no one else was coming.
and yes the entire island wasnt burning, but they were already poor with no money to rebuild. and its possible the land burning was creating toxic smoke since without the goddess the land was poisonous. so the people may not have wanted to risk staying there, not realizing a new guardian was made
