Reddick will most likely struggle quite a bit and/or fail completely, as almost everyone does, but comparing him to Kidd is silly. My favorite background quality of JJ is that he was the most hated guy in his NCAA days, yet he continued to cook. Had to transition into a role guy on the pro level, but he made the most of it without letting his ego get the best of him. He's head strong and won't let noise distract him. Now how good of a coach he is will have to be seen, but he has the character to stand up to the pressures.

Great example, but the context is extremely different here. He's going to be working with the greatest player the game has ever seen, and a player who pretty much stamped his hiring. He knows something we don't. Also, a lot of previous coaches have co-signed on Redick being a great coach. Gary wasn't touted as a coach by Sir Alex, if I am not mistaken. Also, JJ is seemingly much more well-rounded than Gary Neville. But you are right in some way. Gary is smart, just doesn't sound smart. He just wasn't meant to be a coach. JJ is respected by peers. Gary was not known in Valencia.

I love that Rob Lowe has been able to make the transition from acting to being Lakers President of Basketball Operations. Few actors have been able to make that transition and it’s likely why he’s able to see the value in hiring JJ as the next head coach. Second, while I love JJ as a player, sports analyst, I have some concern about him as a head coach. My primary concern is his OCD which hopefully he’s able to manage as a coach. I’ve worked with people with OCD and while they certainly can be meticulous and very details oriented. They can also be perfectionist to the point of making them unbearable to work with and often they can be blind to their own behavior. JJ speaks openly about his OCD and hopefully he’s sought professional help for it because while it can be an asset, it also can be an extreme liability.
