I've seen quite a number of people killed in crashes, and a much smaller number actually walk away on their own... While I've seen a few who were killed with their seatbelts on... I've NEVER seen one walk away without the thing in place and properly worn.
BUT I'd changed my mind a long time earlier than gathering all this information in my travels (which are fairly extensive)... A Patrol Cop talked to us in "Defensive Driving Training" (a Class the Navy requires you get to be certified for "Duty Driver" of on-base vehicles)... He explained it as follows :
"How many of you wear belts? Yeah... ALL of you have a belt on, and it takes you a couple minutes to put it on every morning. Now, it takes ME about 2 seconds... maybe 3... to pull the strap down and click the thing in place. That's it... AND you think it's defensible to tell me that it's too much work??? Look, we have a seat-belt law in this state, and the first time is a $200 fine, court costs, and points on your license... AND you could avoid ALL that for 3 seconds worth of work. You don't wanna do it... BUT you'll still spend 2 or 3 MINUTES to put that belt on EVERY morning??? What does it do? It passes a uniform inspection... It looks pretty for girls in town... It's part of the fashion in a suit and tie... BUT 2 or 3 MINUTES is good for a decoration you don't even need and 2 or 3 seconds is too damn much to avoid a $200 fine??? I'm not even going to argue how many people get ejected every year and die horribly or worse, live through it... BUT you still think 2 or 3 SECONDS is just too much bother... Well... GOOOD FOR YOOOOOU!!!!"
...AND he dropped the microphone and walked out. That was it...
      I haven't forgotten a seatbelt since. ;o)

I read an article circa 2004 written by a mum whose daughter became addicted to heroin. The teen met a guy who got her involved with the drug and she started stealing to fund her habit. The girl even handed a watch that had been a birthday present back to her mum out of fear she’d sell it. Story short, the girl and her boyfriend were found on the floor of a public toilet. He was dead and she as unconscious having both overdosed on heroin. She survived but her brain was deprived of so much oxygen she would be better off dead. Unpopular opinion, I know. She is in a home being cared for 24/7 and will never have a life. There was a photograph of her and it was so sad to see. There was also a photograph of her as a child and she looked like one of the girls I babysat at the time.

I mean I don't think that's unpopular at all, being essentially a vegetable or even just having a bare awareness of what's going on - or even like the guy who was brain damaged in an accident and is cognizant of the fact that most of his intellect is gone, that's a horrible fate, these people have essentially lost much of what made them, well, them. I wouldn't hesitate to call that a fate worse than death. You can be happy that a person survived, while acknowledging that for their personal stake - rather than perhaps the emotional stake of those around them - it might have been better if they hadn't.

Last school year around April, a Jeep full of high schoolers took off on a gravel county ride going well over the speed limit. Everyone was bucked except for 1 kid. They almost veered off the road and overcorrected when the driver tried to take control again, causing the jeep to flip and land upside down. Everyone got out with minor injuries, except the kid who wasn’t buckled. His neck snapped on impact with the roof of the car when it was upside down. It wasn’t anyone fault, but their lives are forever changed, especially the kids brother, who was sitting next to him

My Dad was a heroin addict who had gotten clean prior to meeting my mother. Also had many suicide attempts prior, as well. Once they got together, he was clean for a couple of years, until a coworker gave some to him (he worked in jewelry making at the time, so the factory didn't have the best crowd), and he got addicted again. He would have some okay moments, but we were shuffled out of the house and to my grandparents house when he would inject. (As an aside, he was found to have Hep-C during our (my sister and I's) conception. We didn't get it, fortunately). Rarely saw him, but he would always be screaming and would generally be dangerous. Eventually, he got so bad with his domestic abuse that he was arrested twice. Mother took him back a third time, so that we could have a father figure, and that was an enormous mistake, because he was nearing that suicidal point again. Inevitably, he planned a murder-suicide and nearly went through with it, but we miraculously got the cops there in time, and it only resulted in his suicide.
Lots of consequences passed onto other people, myself included, that I won't go into, as it could be a novel, but it certainly fucked up everyone directly affected for the rest of their lives. This happened the day before 9/11, which was an insanely unbelievable and tragic coincidence. Our case is now used in training our city's (at that time) police recruits on domestic violence.

Went through a lot of hell. Finally got through high school and got herself into collage, at 17. Started freaking out about life, as she had basically raised herself. Messed around with pain pills, got clean and was focused on her life again. Went to a party where some pos offered her something, that something was fentanyl. She went to the bathroom to try some, and they found her unresponsive whenever they got around to remembering that she was in there. We really don't know how long her brain went without oxygen, but it was long enough to leave her brain dead.

I literally just don't understand why people do drugs. We learn about how dangerous and addicting they are at very young ages. DARE drills into our heads that it only takes one time for people to get addicted, we watched interviews of people that were former addicts, current addicts, people that were in prison for things they did while high/drunk, families of people that died of overdoses/alcoholism/smoking, and then we STILL had refreshers on the dangers of drugs, alcohol, and cigarettes every year and again in driving school. I simply can't fathom being exposed to that kind of education and still thinking, "Sure I'll give it a try."

In all his studies he's found that a lot of his patients are just bored and he's written a lot of articles and journals about how parents need to get their kids more involved in their communities, schools, churches, etc and do more to encourage social interactions while monitoring friendships. I still don't get trying it when it's so clear how bad it is, though. Like, if you're really so bored with your life, it'd be better for you to get addicted to just about anything else other than drugs and alcohol.

near miss story, Friend of my brother took him shooting (Not saying which of the 6 it is), later that evening a guy pissed him off in a mall parking lot for intentionally cutting him off then getting out of the car to flip him off for delaying him, owner of the gun pulls it out aims it at the guy who just got out of the car to flip the gunman off, gunman pulls trigger, and fires off a round, MISSED. Brother lost a friend but all parties involved in the incident were happy it missed. owner of gun claimed he checked that it was empty before putting it away.... uh huh.

Most people who have good lives and end up addicted to heroin do so because of opiod medication prescribed to them by a doctor for what ever. They get addicted to those, and when the prescription ends they still have the addiction and have to use an other opiod. Main one to find is heroin sadly.

I've been through detoxes, rehabs, and jail. All three have far easier access to heroin (any drug really) than on the streets. When combined with mental health issues and other physically painful conditions, detox becomes a dream. I tried another detox maybe a month ago. I quit that attempt when I was throwing up blood and having grand and petit mal seizures. Now I'm approaching 50 years old, I think it'll be a pine box that stops me. It sucks but that's what I'm expecting.

Okay, I'm saying this as the archetypal "overachiever high school student who now realizes she is burnt out and probably struggles with clinical anxiety" kid: I can bet you so much money that the drug problems of the high achieving kids in these stories was *years* in the making. Because if you get burnt out (and probably will), by that time everyone just kind of expects you to overachieve so it doesn't really feel like you can slow down. And so you have a higher chance of stickling to unhealthy coping mechanisms (like drugs) to get through the day. i never did that(addiction runs in the family-my parents aren't but so many of my relatives are/were, and early on I decided I wouldn't take chances), but I can easily see what led to the high achieving kids' drug problems.
I'm not trying to justify or ignore the behavior, but this probably didn't just happen out of the blue.

    • @juliastrawn2113

It's kind of like: Since studying has been such a huge part of your identity for so long, when you get burnt out and don't have that outlet for your own anxiety, you sort of have no idea what the fuck you're going to do now.
