This works! Ten years ago we put our autistic son on a strict gluten-free/casein-free diet. He improved within a few months. Over a year, he lost almost all of his visible Autistic behaviors, like hand-flapping, tantrums, unusual anxiety, unusual fears, obsessiveness. He's still rather quiet, but he has friends and is doing really well. He's very calm and mellow. He's now the highest-functioning Autistic person among those we know. This wasn't the only thing we did to help him, but it's what has had the most dramatic impact.
It really helped when his teachers came on board with helping him to do this at school.
How soon were the results noticeable in your son and did he have any withdrawal effects from dairy and wheat? Or did he resist the diet at all? Thank you for your testimonial.
As an autistic recently become vegan adult, I find this pretty interesting. I've always wondered if I could help my symptoms at all some way.
Did you find it helped you? More interestingly, did you attempt to re-introduce dairy and gluten to see if any symptoms returned? And subsequently subsided when you removed diary/gluten?
Such great information! Thanks for the excellent explanation, Dr Greger. :-)
I like how he explains each graph so we understand exactly what we're looking at.
I finally switched my daughter to A2 milk. Within just a couple of days the difference has been remarkable. She has had a global developmental leap. Very evident in the day to day as well as academically. For example last week reading one word was difficult for her. Suddenly this week she is reading multiple sentences happily. She used to drop her towel where ever she was, when she decided she didn’t need it any more. This week I noticed that she hung it up in the bathroom without a single request from me. Let alone the multiple follow-ups that rarely produced results. She used to become overwhelmed, quickly, playing fast paced math learning games. Now she not only tolerated the fast pace and instantly mastered the level she has been on for three months, but she skipped to the top level andhappily tackled that, despite the fast pace. Efficacy of A2 relates to gut health. In my daughter’s case, she was a good candidate because her gut had been impacted from hospital intervention at birth. She had eczema from birth that developed into psoriasis, all of this relates to gut health.
My best friend’s son is autistic. I must share this information with her ASAP.
Thank you so much, Dr. Greger for all your hard work!
In rhe "Vaxxed" documentary, a compelling case is presented linking the onset and epidemic aspect of autism to the use of a certain vaccine. I would like Dr. Greger enlighten is on this. ruclips.net/video/rARfNln0Wqk/видео.html
Eric Laithwaite vaccines aren't related to nutrition.
Our autistic son got better when we took him off gluten & sugar.
Hello, I am just about to take mine off sugar, it will be brutally difficult, the restrictive diet is insane. Any gluten free tips as she lives on bread etc and hates change in foods. Im replacing all the massive amounts of refined sugar with plenty fruit and smoothies.
Thank you so much for this video and the ones on autism!
Great video, this info should be widespread in the public.
Wow the results of the diet changes are extraordinary.
Amazing thank you!
I am an adult and I can relate to this
Truly amazing. If a casein "allergy" is the underlying factor for autism, the treatment is obvious...
Personally I suspect it is one factor. Just like different cancer variants respond to different treatments, some kids may have other things going on.
Impressive research!!! My life changed for good when I stopped eating gluten!
Please link to the scientific sources you reference.
It's great having them in the videos but we'd also like to be able to look at them for ourselves.
Tara McCarthy Scientific studies are usually published in medical journals which costs hundreds or thousands of dollars to subscribe to. He could link but you’d probably have to pay about $100+ each article to access them.
On his website nutritionfacts.org every video has a link below the video to a list of all citations, for you to look up
My interest in casomorphin started when I recognized a correlation between milk consumption and drowsiness that no one could explain. I further wondered why the subsequent naps I took would feel so pleasant, when nighttime sleep didn't feel this way. The difference was night and day (no pun intended), but no one could explain the correlation since it didn't matter if it was warm or cold, full fat or skim, standard or organic, and it didn't matter much if I was otherwise sleep deprived.
Probably 15 years after noting the correlation, I finally encountered a discussion of casomorphin and realized it fit. It also makes me wonder how much this accounted for the fact that I felt like a zombie all the time at school, growing up, even though I never had symptoms that others would identify as problematic since it probably made me a quieter, more compliant child (I sort of felt imprisoned in a role like on a TV show, and for unidentified reasons I didn't dare alter from my goodie-two-shoes persona). I personally believe there were spiritual things going on too, though, so it's hard to sort out.
Since learning about it, I've read that the sensitivity may be genetic (some of my family members are practically milkaholics who also have sleeping issues), that it may be correlated with SIDS, and that the breed of cow the milk comes from makes a difference. I also wonder about the fact that when I had to buy Costco's milk which is ultra-pasteurized to the point of tasting slightly burnt, I didn't get the normal sleepiness. What I can't figure out is why I sometimes crave milk and sometimes don't, or where to buy milk from only a specific breed of cow since commercial milk is mixed for nutritional reasons.
Cut our cows milk and Drink Goat organic milk
Dr. Greger, I know you and your team are busy educating people to be healthier but would you ever find some time to look into “syringoma” please..? My family’s been dealing with it for a very long time and no one hasn’t been able to help us:-(
This is so exciting and could help so many children!! I couldn't even when you said the thing about giving children drugs instead of simply removing the problem from their diet though. That kind of thinking really scares me.
Why is no one showing this to the autism foundations ???
Good stuff. With a ASD child in the house pretty much means that the whole house needs to go gluten-casein free.
Thank you Dr Gregor!!! Next month we will diving into the dairy free gluten free world hoping this will help my autistic son.
Didn't he says a study from 2002? So why further researches were not done in that direction since it was so promising?
Gigi Pizzuto Because unfortunately there's no money in it. There is, however, money in developing prescription drugs that can help autism.
The studies in the video are from 1999, 2000, 2002, 2003, 2013, 2014 and 2015.
Maybe the problem is neither Gluten nor Casein, just the leaky gut &/or leaky brain barrier, which lets the casomorphins reach the brain? Maybe we should fix the leakiness? And maybe we are focusing on the wrong ones as culprit? What say Dr. Greger?
You are correct i beleive
Regardless stopping the ingestion of the harmful substance would be a solution!
It's 4 years old iknow, but i disagree. Some people have these issues from birth, the issue can be way bigger then a 'leaky gut'.
It’s hard to truly fix a leaky gut without cutting gluten and dairy for at least sometime.
Well explained and showing some interesting research always prefer things that show evidence other than I say this because someone told me which is what a lot of dietary advice is based upon
A dairy executive gave this video a thumbs down.
What is the test called at 30s? I would like to get this test done.
Thank you so much for posting this!
I know this isn't related to Autism, but I'm curious about a potential tangent study from Gluten/Casein casomorphins. Just curious if these exogenous morphines can affect our digestive system. This study reminded me of a previous video linking fat/oil to heartburn due to a relaxing of the esophageal muscles. Could these exo-morphins have a similar effect on muscles? Personally, my siblings and I have noticed when we consume wheat (especially whole grain) or dairy, it usually causes heartburn/reflux or digestive upset. I'd love to know if there are any studies along this line.
Thanks
Bel video!
Eating whole plant-foods improves empathy in any human in my humble opinion.
Not really, people can give up eating animal products for entirely selfish reasons.
True, I was one of those people when I went vegetarian, but since I went vegan I've not only experienced even better health, but it does make one see that the entire animal protein circus is a dangerous and unjust mass delusion for both animals and humans.
+SexyJamal77 Hahhaa me, only doing it for health
well, im still a loner
@Eelke Aptroot, I hope you realize that your stance is counter to the Bible (Genesis 9:3, Romans 14, etc.), and science. If vegans don't either supplement with B-12, or accidently eat enough bugs as a contaminant, they eventually drop dead. (Source: Discover Magazine).
WOW
My son tested positive for an intolerance to alpha lactoglobulin. He tested negative for gluten.
2025 here and grateful you covered this topic
Even though Dr Greger has been very specific and thorough on his explanation and previous stance on gluten, wait for the people to comment “I eat gluten free diet” “gluten is bad”
gluten is only bad if you have a sensitivity to it and so far the science bares this out!
Amir Abdullah Al-Bey yes, yet people fall into the marketing strategy of “gluten free foods” which in case you haven’t notice are more expensive
"gluten is only bad if you have a sensitivity to it and so far the science bares this out!"
Same for dairy, however, I do think the school lunch programs should be more friendly to the many people for whom dairy is not a wise choice to drink, and the mere 6 oz of juice that was available when I was a kid isn't sufficient hydration.
Only moderately promising though, unfortunately. No reason to run to your friend who has an autistic child and pester them with yet another "simple" solution to their autism. I pity parents of autistic children for the constant barrage of advice from well-meaning friends they must be getting. Annoying! The gluten/casein-free diet idea for autistic children has been around for many years and has been studied. Maybe not sufficiently, but also no reason to declare this THE solution in the same way that not giving certain vaccines appears to be THE solution. Keep in mind: we love simple solutions and we love being the one in the know about things. "Curb your enthusiasm" is good advice in this respect.
The question is: Is it the gluten or is it the casein? I think it's the casein!
In my sons case it is dairy, I notice nothing with gluten but I did switch to organic to try to avoid glyphosate. But I notice massive behaviour changes with dairy and nothing with gluten, also there was a time he had no dairy for a day and had sugar and nothing changed. My son was diagnosed two years ago as being severe and since then he barely has symptoms at all and people don’t even know he has autism 😀
Or is it something else in the milk?
I think there needs to be a study with a control group, a gluten-free group and a casein-free group. Gluten causes enough confusion as it is.
I feel like the big question was why we thought we could digest cow protein in the first place, it isn’t he same as human breast milk. Autism is not new it just has a name now but can you imagine way back when people were put in looney bins. I sadly don’t think we were ever meant to consume cows milk.
aka Franca When people with celiac have to give up dairy, it is because the intestinal lining is so damaged that they cannot produce the enzyme lactase to break down the lactose (milk sugar) in the dairy, and they will heal faster if they exclude dairy from the diet for a period.
Weird thing though I have been eaten gluten-free for 3~ years now and I changed into a different person - depression became worse, because I was no longer exposed to opioids. I had a Taiwanese pineapple cake several days, bread, once a year and I was super-happy, super-horny, and laughing, but afterwards I felt bloated and sick, and it felt like something was stuck in my stomach.
Milk also has opioids - vegetarian cheese makes me super happy. I thought it was tyrosine, but that is invalid.
Fish, soy milk, cacao, oats also makes me happy but it is gentle.
Now I kind of know why humans stopped eating fruit and went for grains - they were drugged.
Then we lost enzymes to digest fructose (fruit) and now we have a problem -
grains are problematic, fruit is problematic, red meat causes cancer, starch causes brain fog and insulin spikes when eaten whole day, only thing left to eat is vegetables, spices, and white meat...
red meat doesn't cause cancer.
IT DOES. Human do not make neu5gc, we are the only mammal that does not produce it. We lost the enzyme to convert neu5ga to neu5gc. Neu5gc is found in tumors / cancer cells, so it HAS TO COME FROM THE DIET! and only red meat, caviar, animal dairy has it. Human milk is neu5ga only.
www.pnas.org/content/112/2/542
www.pnas.org/content/pnas/112/2/542.full.pdf in this pdf is a small table.
it takes about 8 days detox this sugar molecule out of the body.
ucsdnews.ucsd.edu/archive/newsrel/health/09_29_Varki.htm
so eating red meat once in a while is OK, but it is incredibly risky.
our ancestors lived short - happy active lives, eating a lot of red meat, having hardcore sex (IGF1 and DHT spike from meat) - and dying early.
question is - do you want to ''live fast die young'' or live a long life free of disease, just by avoiding red meat, dairy, and just eating poultry or fish?
stop playing scientist when you aren't one.
If I can't answer your questions on the spot them I'm retarded and you must be correct? You don't give a damn about scientific inquiry or skepticism. You're just another blowhard like me or any other silly human who thinks they know all the answers.
uyuyuy99 just a fucking troll. I blocked you.
Are oats milk gluten free
Oats in itself are gluten free but there can be cross contamination during production so pay attention to the label if it says gluten-free
why always autistic children.. what about adults?
also in a gluten-free casein free diet can you eat anything that has "may contain traces of gluten/dairy" (which is almost everything) can you eat oats (they don't have gluten naturally, but for some reason they should be considered contaminated by default unless specifically sold as gluten-free)
He just made a video about the placebo effect and then he lets this study slide?
Of course people knew which diet they were on. It should be done like described in his other paper: Everyone is on a GFCF diet, and they reintroduce G and C with pills in the control group. That way it can be made double-blind and maybe even crossover
I don't have austim but cut down cows milk and feel loads better 😁
poor little artists D:
This is a sensitive topic that is consistently handled disappointingly poorly by Greger. I have an autistic friend who likes being autistic, considers it part of his identity, and detests the idea of this being changed by medicine or diet or anything else. I suspect a lot of autistic people share this view and it is vital to acknowledge that before discussing autism from a biomedical perspective.
Boohoo. Dr Greger is handling the topic fine.
"boohoo" is not an argument, and it's an even worse way of seeming compassionate, which is what this topic needs. Grow up, and treat the subject with proper thought and maturity.
I have autism and don't see it as >necessarily< a bad thing but something with potential strengths and weaknesses. I think it is probably not a natural condition but it can have strengths(resistance to peer pressure throughout life, straightforwardness, etc). I suspect that very few people like having things like social anxiety, unnatural ambiguity in social situations, and so on. I didn't see him talking about curing anything desirable. It would be terrible to abstain from certain foods and suddenly have a strong urge to conform to peer pressure or something. lol
slowly dr greger is digging out the anti starch solution
wheat and rice out of the windows already
i wonder if he manages to get over the fact that the only reason why oats help with heartvalue is that they r high in soluble fiber which helps in excretion of diatary cholesterol - which any other non starchy food that contains soluble fiber does just as well
But this is just on autistic children who have already have damaged cognitive functions. Just like epileptic children who got better on a ketogenic type diet.
It doesn't mean that it will translate to the other 99% of the population.
But i get what you are saying. i would love to see more research on this subject too.
yes autistic children r especially vulnerable
but just think about it: humans have been eating meat for so long and yet they rnt adapted (#whereisdavinifuneedhim)
and yet ppl suggest eating weird starchy foods that r historically speaking a much more recent "invention"
"but humans have been eating grains since 250000 years not 11000 years......." NO thats just lies
and meat has always been eaten and almost any amount carries health risks
i did many experiments and i feel best on raw vegan
even an only meat diet (yes i did that) is superior to anything with a high amount of starches (feeling-wise and blood value-wise (except total cholesterol of course ;p))
if i eat the suggested amount of starches i look like greger in his FAQs
frail weak and tired with a white coated tongue and bad eye sight
hes not a very intuitive person - he needs data to confirm stuff...but ppl who r curious and willing to try out stuff will find that raw veganism (or raw paleo with very minor amounts of animal proteins) r superior to a wfpb vegan diet
but yea its not gregers fault per se: science can just observe data that is present...it can say what is shittier than something else but if there is no data its hard to conclude from it that we should eat like 5kg of mainly faw fruits and vegetables with some nuts seeds and tubers here and there and the occasional egg or so
its an unintuitive way of eating from the caloricly dense way of eating 99.9% of us westerners come from
on normal hclf veganism u just feel slightly better than on SAD...less inflamation but more bloating...both r trash diets
raw veganism is a whole nother animal...but it takes a week or so to notice how much better it is because our digestion is all gummed up with starch residue D:
what have we faggats missing out on ;p
Plenty of gluten-free starches, I don't see your point....
the problem is not the gluten! glutenous grains r just double trouble (for some)
check ur tongue - if its any white then u r under the starch spell!! aka some small intestinal bacterial overgrowth caused by a wrong way of eating
if we were meant to eat huge amounts of starches like suggested then (i prupose) we should be able to taste them...but starchy foods hardly taste like anything except if u chew them for very long
its like eating unripe fruit over and over...but we have been so far off the proper way of eating that the "suggested by current science" way of eating is even off because just eating raw kale, persimmon and celery would never cross our starch addicted heads and if u think about it - u find this comment ridiculous and far fetched right? just proves what im saying (raw veganism technically is a whole food plant based diet...but its much less suitable....i doubt many ppl can overnight go from the standard american diet to raw veganism...however from standard american diet to vegan is extremely easy....because they both about equally shitty!
sooooooooDark
