Nice video! I just did this on mine after watching this video yesterday. Also was a pain trying to get back in. Twice I had to re insert the spring into the new seal that popped out from hitting the shaft teeth while trying to get it back in. A little force while moving it back and forth, a couple of clicks and it was in. Made sure the teeth didn't tear the new seal. So far so good with all gears engaging like they should. Read up on this procedure on all the forums but watching this video helped give me a boost of confidence. Local dealer wanted $1400 to fix this leak. Bought the o-ring and 3 seals for less than $20.
Also having my spring pop out which is a pain. Im having trouble getting it set back in place. How much force did you use and were the 3 bolt holes completely flush with the tc after it lined up?
The reason those bolts were difficult to remove is probably because you were using a small wrench which didn't have much leverage. Thanks for the video.

Just spent two days on this - it didn't go as well for me as GX470 - but I still managed to get it working - I want to detail other issues that I encountered to help anyone else doing this repair. I had issues getting the center diff lock to work properly after doing it the first time. What I ended up doing was, once the actuator is removed from the vehicle, I plugged it back into the car and cycled the actuator a few times to reset it to the proper position. I believe that in the act of pulling it off the car it's possible to get the gears in the device mis-aligned (not sure though). Then, with gears reset, I reinstalled the actuator on the car ensuring that the metal actuator rod is pushed all the way in to the transfer case (as far as it will go). If you're having trouble with this repair, I believe adding this step will help fix it. Now it works, and the oil doesn't leak out of the place with the old O-ring. Success!
Also, another issue I had was, when I reinstalled it, the teeth of the gear pulled out the metal reinforcement part from the smaller O-ring, and this ended up interfering with the gears. Be careful with letting the teeth of the rod mess up that smaller seal.
@@jaredhirschkorn2250 having the same issues you did. Did you just plug the harness in while the actuator was hanging and run the button to cycle? Or did you put it back together and cycle it ? Also having a hard time with the spring popping out of place . Ended up damaging the seal and now i dont know where to find one 😪

Ill grab a new seal and try it again tho, fingers crossed i get it right.. 1 more question, once it slides into the rod and pushed to the end, do you twist and push till you hear a pop? I took it off a few times because i couldnt get it pushed in far enough and there was a slight gap with the bolt holes

@@tracereed7457 Yes they are very similar and I believe this repair should be about the same. The only difference is the 4runner has two shafts, one for the lock and one for the electric low range selector which on the lexus is a mechanical lever in the car. I am not sure if the process is identical but I know when I ordered my diff seal kit, it came with two shaft seals even though the lexus only uses one.

With how auto manufacturers normally do things, I would not be surprised if they only sold this as an assembly. I.e. Toyota would try to sell you a whole new actuator. There may be some people on the forums who make aluminum replacements or something but I don’t know what the PN for that would be.
Just a helpful comment. My 02 4runner had an oil leak from the top of the transfer case... Found out that the 4 wheel drive lever actuator flange plate gaskets failed. Caused oil seepage down the sides... 4 bolts hold down this flange. Easy to get to from the top. You will need to remove parts of the center console. Made new gaskets ..cleaned and installed..Upper leak issue fixed. Just saying...may help.

I watched several of these videos before attempting to replace this o-ring. Super simple job, didn’t even have to jack up the vehicle due to the high ground clearance. 12mm and 5/8” sockets with a breaker bar was all that was needed. Dealership (stealership?) quoted me $1400 to do this 1 hour job, and they have to go by “the book” and charge the amount given. Since it was a Toyota dealership, they told me it was like the Toyota actuator (which has two shafts and not the single shaft) and that their instruction was to “crack the case”. I told them they were wrong (why not get an actuator for the Toyota and the Lexus and compare?). I also sent them an email telling them to call up youtube and watch the videos. Never heard from them. Ignorance is bliss if you get to charge customers more money. Now, how do we contact the people that write “the book” and tell them they’re wrong?
Dealers don’t care. They’d rather catch ignorant fish who don’t know better. That’s why I make this information public. Hopefully people will save money
I saw on where another You Tuber shows how to...remove the Actuator from a 4runner. He shows a small gear on the side ...that you remove allowing the actuator to side out. It's on RUclips. The 4runner does have 2 rods.
Any clue if this is the same process for the v8 4runner? I thought they shared the same engine, but wasn't sure about other parts being the same. It looks similar to what mine looks like underneath. Thanks.
I believe The 4 runner has an electronic shifter. Meaning there are two shift rods so you can’t rotate the actuator around the single rod like you can in the GX. For 4 Runners, The transfer case needs to be split to remove the two shift rods from the inside from what I understand.

What year gx470 is this? I have a Sequoia with the same looking transfer case actuator but am wondering if it has the two rods you mentioned that prevents it from coming out or has the one like the GX. Thanks!
This is an 04 GX. Should be the same from 03-09 for the GXs. The one rod is for locking the center diff and the second rod is for if the rig needs to electronically select 4hi or 4lo. So if you twist an electronic knob or button or something, it needs that second rod in there. If the rig has a physical shift lever with a mechanical connection to the T case (like the GX) then it has the single rod.
@@justinbrownell5511 well the leaky transfer case was the least of my issues because my four wheel drive did not work the previous owner said that it slammed into four wheel drive automatically when they were driving and they never use the four wheel drive. I ended up sourcing a used transfer case locally for $1,000 with around 100,000 miles on it I installed that one and my four wheel drive is working now. It is quite a bit of work to drop the transfer case split it open disassemble the transfer case in order to fix the seals. Too bad there is not an easier fix that I know of
On my 4 runner I had the same split on the vacuum hose. Cut the crack off the line, and reroute the hose to give you an extra couple inches. The tape fix will work until it gets wet.
Greg Z. Thanks for the tip that’s definitely a better solution. After a bit more research, I’ve determined that this is a breather for the transfer case actuator, so I will reroute all my diff breathers, and this breather into the engine bay in case I go through any water. Maybe I’ll do a video on that as well

Pennychaser1 Since this is a rubber seal failure, the time it needs to be changed depends on your local conditions and driving habits. It is somewhat of a factory defect so it is not part of the normal maintenance schedule. You can look under the actuator and see if there is any fluid. If there’s not, you’re good to go, no problem.
My Lexus GX470 the DAC green light comes on and wouldn't go off also I don't know the gear can't shift to 3 and 2L gear it can only move from park to reverse,neutral, and 4D which is drive, please assist me I just bought it.

Do I need a new case or can the gears be replaced? Everything that could possibly be fixed has been done. But, the transfer case metal shavings prevents me from traveling from Texas to New Mexico. Hi Vincent, sorry you’re having this issue… unfortunately there is no way for me to know the best route to fix your transfer case just from reading that there are metal shavings. I’d have to defer to the mechanic who has eyes-on the vehicle. The gears can be replaced but the cheaper route is usually to find a functional replacement transfer case at a junkyard.

That could be referring to where the driveshaft(s) come out of the T-case. But I’m not sure, would recommend getting some ramps and just looking around under there to see if it’s the actuator leaking or at one of the driveshaft entry/exit points
If it is electronically actuated and not a shift lever type like the GX I don’t think this will work because you won’t be able to rotate the actuator once it disengages.

Lol I just did the whole thing on video, the diff lock works fine for me to this day, and you’re saying it doesn’t work? Do you work for a Toyota/Lexus dealer or something 🤣 also, I have the links to a new selector shaft seal if you are worried about that. That seal is actually installed at the Actuator and doesn’t require the transfer case to be split. As for getting the timing right, you just need to rotate the actuator on like I show in the video. The gears will engage if you do it right

I did fluid change and soon after my diff selector started leaking. Hence the bad o ring. Replaced that it’s like brand new now. Thanks awesome video.

My center diff is stuck and won’t disengage. I can’t seem to pull out the actuator. Could it be because the diff is locked.

Mine no longer has full time 4WD. I have a real transfer case and different front and rear diffs with lower gears currently have 33s but can fit 35s

After a bit more research, I’ve determined that this is a breather for the transfer case actuator, so I will reroute all my diff breathers, and this breather into the engine bay in case I go through any water. Maybe I’ll do a video on that as well

Yeah I think the ‘Runner has those two rods that require the case to be split... not completely sure though! I’d check the forums

Was there other issues the leak was creating or was it just a leak?
No other issues, thankfully. The fluid level could have gotten dangerously low if I didn’t address the issue though.

Pennychaser1 Since this is a rubber seal failure, the time it needs to be changed depends on your local conditions and driving habits. It is somewhat of a factory defect so it is not part of the normal maintenance schedule. You can look under the actuator and see if there is any fluid. If there’s not, you’re good to go, no problem.
My Lexus GX470 the DAC green light comes on and wouldn't go off also I don't know the gear can't shift to 3 and 2L gear it can only move from park to reverse,neutral, and 4D which is drive, please assist me I just bought it.
Have you tried pressing the DAC button on the center console?

I have a problem with my 2003 Lexus GX470 and hope you can help me. I recently took my car to my mechanic. He noticed that the transfer case had a small amount of metal shavings. Do I need a new case or can the gears be replaced? Everything that could possibly be fixed has been done. But, the transfer case metal shavings prevents me from traveling from Texas to New Mexico. Please let me know if you have a way to fix it. Thank you.
Hi Vincent, sorry you’re having this issue… unfortunately there is no way for me to know the best route to fix your transfer case just from reading that there are metal shavings. I’d have to defer to the mechanic who has eyes-on the vehicle. The gears can be replaced but the cheaper route is usually to find a functional replacement transfer case at a junkyard.

I have a leak in my 2004 Toyota 4 runner V8 4.7 4x4 transfer case actuator , Would that be the same procedure?
If you don’t have a physical shift lever for the T case, then it’s possible you will need to have it split open and repaired from the inside

my GX was leaking, i was told by Lexus that the service I needed was to replace the output input seals on transfer case. Is this the same?
That could be referring to where the driveshaft(s) come out of the T-case. But I’m not sure, would recommend getting some ramps and just looking around under there to see if it’s the actuator leaking or at one of the driveshaft entry/exit points

If it is electronically actuated and not a shift lever type like the GX I don’t think this will work because you won’t be able to rotate the actuator once it disengages.
Is this also called transfer case seal?
I think a transfer case seal would be the gasket that is in the middle of the transfer case. This is just the transfer case actuator o-ring seal.

Lol I just did the whole thing on video, the diff lock works fine for me to this day, and you’re saying it doesn’t work? Do you work for a Toyota/Lexus dealer or something 🤣 also, I have the links to a new selector shaft seal if you are worried about that. That seal is actually installed at the Actuator and doesn’t require the transfer case to be split. As for getting the timing right, you just need to rotate the actuator on like I show in the video. The gears will engage if you do it right
