We had a simple idea: get two rad musicians we love to sit down and just talk, like two humans. We're calling the result "Back & Forth," and our first episode features St. Vincent and tUnE-yArDs.

Its funny how St. Vincent talks about how music can sound almost ugly at first.
When I first listened to her some of her most popular songs Digital Witness, Cruel, & Birth in Reverse, I felt that her sound was not necessarily ugly just weird to the point that I couldn't get into. I recall thinking that although her music was really weird, however, it had some sort of hook that drew me back multiple times to get further into her.
After further exposure to her music, she has become one of my favorite artists and now I'm practically in love with Annie Clark!
I would agree with this. Her "ugliness" mostly comes in with some of her guitar playing. Beyond that, it's just really strange music - which I love!
I had the same experience with Tuneyards. The first time I heard it on Song Exploder, my reaction was "wtf is this?" I kept coming back to it though, and as I did I liked it more and more. It's a little more like blue cheese, and considering all the kraft singles type sounds out there, I'm glad for something more complex :)
Yeh me 2
These two are so cute together!!! I want to see them do an album together!!
Yeah that would be really cool!
please please please
This is amazing. It's funny that they said "Merrill from tUnE-yArDs" and "Annie Clark from St. Vincent." I usually think of Merrill AS tUnE-yArDs and Annie AS St. Vincent. But perhaps they become collective on stage on a live setting.
This video means so much to me, especially since these are the two women that inspire me the most. I think it's so funny how all of my favorite musicians are somehow friends and all work with each other, it just makes me want to be a part of that world.
yea, and like cool and stuff
st vincents thoughts on healing people really is a beautiful statement. I think that all the time, what would my life be without music? it would be a very sad existence & foe her to come of so genuine about it really speaks for her character. its people like annie that make me believe that music is still very much alive & well thank you to all real artists out there making music to give back to the artists who have helped them through tough times
Geniuses both! Never thought about the two in the same space but.. actually, does make sense.
Rad musicians indeed.
Best interview by Justin and Katy Perry, I though they wouldn't like Stravinsky.
I recognise this video is 9 years old now, but I ADORE both their music. “Ugliness” is what I desire when I get into music; I get really insecure from how polished all music is, but I endeavour to have their creativity and skill... even if whatever I make will never be appealing.
ive watched this every six months (or so) since it came out. the passion and ideas in this are amazing
This is quite the contrast from the Danny Brown // A$AP Rocky back and forth.
My two best alternative singers!!!! In one video!!! Awesome!
The way Annie says "wait a second" @ 2:16 is soooooo cute ahhhgggay panic.
I LOVE this. You two women - scratch that - PEOPLE, ROCK. :)
women are people though
***** bahahaha great comeback!
***** women are men with wo in front of it
music you made healing yourself heals others;
i thoroughly enjoyed this conversation.
also, annie's jacket is gorgeous.
this is not my beautiful wife
This was really cool. :) I would like to see more of these type of episodes. :) Nice chats between musicians. Things I've always been thoroughly intrigued with. Thank you for trying out the idea! Thank you.
St.Vencent is a great talent and one of the best guitarist I have ever seen, But the music from TuneYards totally blows me away. One of the most, if not the most passionate voices I have ever heard.
st vincent is so raw. role model type shit..
I love ugliness in music, especially in pop.
Benjamin Tirone Nunes ugh same. especially when I play the guitar myself I just love to mess up the effects to make the most gruesome wicked sounds
Aww this is surreal, these 2 only would meet in my playlist i thought
Two of my favorite women in music right now. AWEsome!
OH MY GOD. THIS IS THE BEST THING EVER
Full body chills, I love these two sm
I never really compared tUnE-yArDs to St. Vincent before and now that they have done this video together I can't stop comparing them.
They're the most mainstream artists among people who think they're too intellectual for top 40 radio. They're the Katy Perry and Justin Bieber of the Pitchfork Fan Club.
This is very beautiful to hear? When are you going to play in Leeds again? Prince kept me alive I would say x
two of my favorite acts
I don't know the girl from St. VIncent, but Merrel's latest album is really amazing and unique. Great talent.
Lol- Until today, it was the opposite. I've liked St. Vincent (Annie) for years, and have only just now heard the tune yards.
I've been slowly getting into both of them and two days ago I bought whokill and strange mercy on CD they said what I was thinking today driving. There was something about it that I wanted more of just not at first. I had to watch st Vincent play to understand what was going on.
I'm still waiting for their album
two beautiful girls talking about ugliness
one is beautiful, the other kinda butch. She is trying to be too.
Ewaryst Missiuro I know you're talking about Merrill, she may be...but I think she is a beautiful person. She writes some really good music. I've been listening to her since she was with the band Sister Suvi. Powerful voice. It's just who she is.

Met Annie after a show in Mexico, She confused my Syd barrett t-shirt with Marc Bolan, but then she fixed it. That was nice.
"conversation" or... "sunglasses competition". i love listening to annie clark talk about her music. she's so insightful.
This is too much awesomeness for one interview.
Just putting this out there to confirm Annie's suspicions: Yes. Your music has healed me.
Can't wait to see more Back & Forth in the future!
Saw St. Vincent live a couple of weeks ago. FUCKING AMAZING! Krokodil live was a hell of an experience.
THIS IS THE BEST THING I'VE SEEN ALL DAY
If Zach Galifianakis was there it would be called between two babes.
two of the best!
And big thanks to Merrill for the enthusiastic nods. Way to go, Hun.
nothing quite like living in puppet theater barns
they're both very talented in their own right.
Ugh, why are they wearing shades in the shade? That was in the back of my mind the whole time.
I kept thinking about the mustache. I dunno, I guess its hip and all, but I find mustache on a woman somewhat unsavory. Call me old-fashioned
Ewaryst Missiuro
old-fashioned.
Ahaha right before it ends you can see a silly cop coming to investigate the ruckus
behind the glass house!
Very cool. Would like to see a video dissecting a particular song, from both artists.
WHAAATT THEE??!!! (drooools)
I have agree with Annie that music is healing.
I have a crush on Annie Clarks face.
I love them😍😍😍😍😍
"Hi. This is Katy Perry..." Aww Annie, be more adorable
tUnE-yArDs will be opening for David Byrne this year (2018)
I'm about too, I'll let you know how I get on!
I love Annie Clark!
I met Merrill last summer before an experimental solo gig she did here in NYC and she was so cool and engaging. I wish I could meet Annie and engage her, in many ways! Wink wink.
Omg my favorite people how.
Grimes X Crystal Castles!
Loooooooove it! awesome girls
annie's last statements really are spot on, I think I've garnered more insight and emotional honesty from the arts than the whole stupid duration of my stupid adherence to stupid organized religion stupid
so legit
St. Vincent is gorgeous
have you listened to the album she had done with David Bryne? It's awesome :D
lol
wish Annie asked Tune-Yards about her mustache
the three of us should hang out
Hurry girls the cops are coming!
-"Ladies are you aware that 'Artists discussing their work in alleys' is prohibited?"
Why have I not seen this before?
Did she mention the friend on 'The Laughing Man'?
Still trying to figure out a way to lure Annie back to my place! lol
come on weirdo
adam mizuna Well, If that's not in the back of your head somewhere, I sugest you come out of the closet and be proud of your gayness!
***** shut up
rdvonz Your Mother!
Oh, I'm sorry - I didn't realise that any guy who doesn't objectify a woman is gay.
Annie is more than a pair of boobs and a pretty face. She is not a plaything to fulfil your desires. Wake up, it's the 21st century! People don't get away as easily with these things, so I suggest that you realise your statement was wrong and get back to your life - without objectifying people.
They are so awesomely human. I wish there wasn't a stupid soundtrack playing the whole time. I think it might be better without music.
AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH YES
I want to know more about the the healing that she refers to with regard to her music...notice she took a long pause there and likely because she realized nowadays, people take a quote way too far. Tech travels fast.
Wow
Met St. V. after a show. A very nice woman.
If only she realized how funny those shades look on her.
Merrill and Annie well deserved to be the first to break in Back in Forth
Is there a second part?
we care a lot annie, we care a lot.
Gangsta
you'll get over it
check out her cover of the pop group she's beyond good and evil
This is Winesburg Ohio if it's main characters were Beavis and Butt-head OR Spinal Tap The Ladies Cut.
I KNEW MERRILL WOULD CALL HERSELF JUSTIN BEIBER
Annie is the best.
But she has at least got you overusing your shift key, so that's something.
hahaha ok...
What's the song in the background?
2:50 WRONG, Annie! It's 2017! Your move, atheists!
Just get them with PJ Harvey and you have the best musicians of 2011!
background song?
Van continuity fail at 0:49
Zappa was into Stravinsky. Heavily influenced by him, actually...
I would love this so much more if you would just hire a sound guy.
Windy-much.
take off the sunglasses!
What are watching again?
i want to hang out with annie clark ):
@ActToBeFree It was a joke. Don't take it so seriously.
Hmm... listen to more Stravinsky, then.
mustache in purple dress
