I just did this job for the second time on our Whirlpool washer. The weak spot on these washers is the poor quality of the shaft, they start rusting after a few years and the tub will not float up and down anymore leaving the machine inoperable. After doing this job the first time I kept the old shaft, recently the machine started acting up again, so I turned down the old shaft in the lathe and sleeved it with a stainless sleeve . Replaced the bearings, seal and shaft with the new improved one and the washer is working perfectly again, hopefully for a long time !!
Hi sir, i have a wtw5000dw1 ive gotten everything apart because the seal was leaking all over the floor from transmission seal to tub. Didnt know if the only way to replace seal is to buy a new transmission/ gearcase if your familiar with that model at all. Thank you kindly!
That particular unit has the gearcase. And I believe you can not get the seal separate from the gearcase. Here is a video similar to that unit ruclips.net/video/ddZcxB2MFYU/видео.htmlsi=fiXk2OBjLfQXmyFU
How much do you charge for labor on a job like this? I used to do them, but seeing that new basic top-load washers can be purchased for $499 on frequent sales, I realized it may not be worth it for the customer.
Parts labor and all is about $295 plus or minus. While sometimes yes it’s not worth it. Some people say that repairing it saves them money. Because if they replace the washer they have to have the matching dryer too. So it’s $300 to repair or $1100 for a set. 👍🏼
At about 4:30 you can see where I put the lower bearing on the tool. The way the tool works is it squeezes the top and the bottom together at the same time. But you can see how the bottom bearing goes on then the washer and spacer sleeve.
At the 15 second mark, I have a plastic piece on the shaft that I don’t see in your video. I don’t know what it’s called, but I ordered it from Amazon and I can send you that item so you can see what it is.
@@LAapplianceguy there a driver hub and a driven hub? I think the one that I'm having issues with is the driver hub. It's the smallest of the 3 pieces.
I wish I would’ve shown it better in the video. But the bearing sits in the bottom part of the tool first, then the washer on top of the bearing, then the 4” sleeve/tube on top of the washer. So from bottom to top it goes bearing washer sleeve/tube. Of course the bigger bearing is on the top side too. Hope that helps. Next time I’ll try and get a better shot of it.
@@dad0041 it’s a possibility. When I’m pressing/tightening the screw I go until I can turn it anymore. You should have just a tiny little bit of the bottoms bearing sticking out the bottoms of the tub. Maybe about 1/8” of the outer race sticking out.
At the 7:08 mark, I can rotate the shaft pretty easy, but then it gets really tight, then it gets loose again, and then repeats. Is that normal, or did I miss a step somewhere?
At the 5:30 mark, my bearing is stuck in that piece(I think it's called the press tool). Any suggestions on how to get it out? I'm not sure how it could have been prevented. Was the flat side supposed to go towards the bearing?
Oh yeah that happens sometimes I usually take the long punch tool or extension and push it out from the bottom. Usually a few light taps and it will push it up and out.
@@dad0041 ahhh yeah that sucks. A vise and some prying or maybe try freezing it then put it in the sun to warm it. But try not to ruin the bearing. But if it happens bearing are not that expensive I’d probably just grab another bearing.
@@dad0041 just so happen I had another set of bearing to put in. I tried to show how the bottom bearing goes in better. Maybe you can see it better in that one. 👍🏽
That is an old 3/8” drive ratchet extension that broke and I grinded the sides flat so it would go into the jack and I could use my small impact driver to push the tubs out. Because trying to turn that jack by hand was very tiring and time consuming. 👍🏼
@@LAapplianceguy I may have spoke too soon. It didn't sound right, but it seems to be doing ok. I was able to find that white piece from my local hardware store. It fit.
@@dad0041 my first thought is lid switch. Do it act like it thinks the lids up? Does it lock? Because these machines usually lock immediately or soon after starting it.
Use that to push the seal down the shaft. And seat the seal. Once you put the lube on the inside and the glue on the outside of the seal. It’s not necessary but it does help push it down flush in the hole.

Very nice work. You are 100% correct. The stainless sleeve is genius. 👍thanks for the feedback
Great idea screw jack,I've been using the scissor jack, cranking by hand
Yes sir the scissor jack got real old real fast. Hard on the wrist and forearm. 😂
And props on your responding! you are like Johnny on the spot. I have gone weeks getting responses from other videos.
Thanks I like making videos even though I’m not great at it. And I also like helping people fix stuff too. So it works out.

It is not quite the exact gearcase but similar. So don’t use that part number. To get the right one use the model number for sure.
@@LAapplianceguy well I'd had hoped there would be a way around it but oh well new gearcase it is! Thanks sir!
@@codyfowler3384 at least I don’t know that you can get the seal by itself. I never have. Might want to double check me just to be sure.

I see where you put the grease. Where did you put the glue? Thanks for making this look underwhelming.
It’s not too bad. The grease goes inside of the rubber seal and the glue goes on the outside. And as you push it in it gushes out. Nothing to it 👍🏼

I had to grind off the one that was there. This one will only go on if I beat it with a hammer. I haven't done that yet.
At the 4:12 mark, how does the tool go together? I must’ve missed something. My bearings didn’t go in straight and they both came out.

With the stator and rotator off it should turn freely. But with the stator and rotator on the magnets cause resistance. That is normal.
