Been using TC since the 90's. And used its predecessor, Norton Commander before that! I find it exacerbating that Microsoft hasn't improved their basic file explorer to include some of these simple features even to this day.

The Total Commander is a very underrated tool. I am happy to see that you give a good introduction to one of its many capabilities. I have been using this tool since the late 1990s, when I was looking for a Windows-based alternative to the DOS-based Norton Commander. It still beats the SpeedCommander in many respects, most of all in stability.

Total Commander is my got to for file management (Move, copy, delete), excellent search tools, renaming, comparing file content, copying file names or paths, synchronizing files between different locations, launching files and apps, ,zipping, and unzipping - the best feature for me are the Tabs and the dual , but it does so many other things well.

Nice review. I use XYplorer as a File Explorer replacement, but for really complicated renames…..I use Bulk Rename Utility. Such a stupidly capable program to rename files. I just used it last week to rename a 500 file download from Instagram where each set of monthly files was buried in sub folders named for each month. I renamed all of the files at one time to include the parent, monthly date folder name in each file, then used XYplorer to copy them out for cataloging into Lightroom in a single directory. Fabulously useful.

Unlike most other Windows programs, TC has never charged for updates. My original (20 year old) license is still good for the latest release. Total Commander is so much more, you could do an entire series on that. Been using TC for ages and never paid for it (shame on me)... Could not do without it!
I use it to manage files on different servers, search text in files on diggerent servers in one go, compare files and folders, rename files, view into files with F3 or open it up in notepad++ with F4. I use it as a single point to start programs, open folders. Also the numeric + and enter selects all files, you have the option to bookmark folders and edit them in a tree structure to quckly navigate to the same folder on different servers. I could go on for some time😄
TC is one of the best tools ever, next to Excel off course

You can change the file selection to Windows-style in Settings->Operation. The multi-rename tool is really good. Better than some programs that only do renaming. The "Redo" button at the bottom returns the file list to perform other operations to it. To the right of the letter case selection is a button that exports file names to a text file. You can use this to load aother list that is in the same order as the files to apply those names.
I think a good practice is to fill the boxes with default [N], [E] and blank. And press rename (without any files). Then it will start in the default view next time.

I can totally agree with a few of the other comments here. For those of us who've been working with PC's for decades, we quite soon found the weaknesses of DOS, and started to use Norton Commander or similar. When that disappeared the hunt begun and when I found Total Commander I was hooked from day one! It looks and behaves similar to old NC, and the latest versions can do so much more. I'm sure I still haven't found all the good stuff that it can do to save time or make me more efficient. Psst! It's available for your smartphones also.

Your voice and tone is so soothing that it permeats all blocks and seeps in well. Your narrative sounds like a lull-a-by and trust me Laila at times it supercedes all sleeping apps!! In absolute awe of your content, depth and how exhaustive it is, also am mesmerised by your sing-a-song tone and your tranquil voice. The accolade I feel is what you absolutely deserve, so congratulations again and thanks for shining in your niche!!! By the way, I will have said nothing if I miss out on letting you know how beautiful I find you for your looks!! You invariably dawn a professional and predictive look and feel yet it's so nonchalantly easy to pick on how beautiful you are!! I am not sure if you would take it in the right spirit but believe you me; you are a stunning beauty- a head Turner!! I feel you are very sensuous and at times sedatively sensuous which in combination makes your videos great for consumption I feel.....You have a lot going for you apart from widening the mental space of people who would have had to look elsewhere otherwise!! you could do this in CMD without installing anything. This is more convenient for helping others who are not able to install stuff in an office work space due to it admin locks.

It would be nice to bulk modify metadata on photos. Windows and google use the file date, not the "shot date". So if you copy, download, or touch a photo, the date changes, and nothing shorts correctly.

Actually, it is based on microsoft language like File System Object in VBA. You can establish it in VBA explore library and insert it then you are able to change everything in your windows system as you want. It is compatible with windows system 👍

Another cool software to batch rename files is Advanced Renamer. It is a lot cheaper than Total Commander althought it focus on renaming.

Is there a way when renaming the files so that it creates a random number for the file. I make slideshows and I have 3000 files in a folder. I am wanting to give each file a random number so it shuffles the images when I sort by name. I am trying to randomly select 25 images and move them into a new folder, I would like to do it automatically so it takes 25 random images and creates a new folder then moves the files into it. I want it to repeat these steps until all the images have been moved. So for 3000 images it will create 120 folders of random pictures with just having to click 1 thing

An off topic question: I have a way to do this outside of an Excel table. But is there a straightforward solution inside an excel table. The problem is this. With a table filled with entries in a column in a form like: B.1.1.529.1.1, B.1.1.529.5.2.1, B.1.1.529.5.4.1, XBB.1, B.2.1.3, B.1, B.1.1.213, A.1.2, P.1.3, …. Etc…. The goal is to treat each entry separated by “.”s as numbers and to sort in combined alpha and numerical order. This is a commonly encountered problem. This particular problem is the “names” of SARS-CoV.2 virus strains. It is simple enough to textsplit the entries outside of the Excel table and to then apply text array functions to define field widths and to create a concatenation string that matches the source string allowing sorting. And then to reference those from within the Excel table. Is there a way to do textsplit() within an Excel table without generating a #spill error? As I mentioned - in science and engineering, this sort of problem comes up a lot.

    • @tunneloflight
      @tunneloflight Год назад

SOLUTION: Though EXCEL will NOT allow the new Textsplit function inside a table. It will allow it in certain circumstances. The answer here is to use: =IFERROR(TEXTJOIN(".",,TEXT(TEXTSPLIT([_data],"."),"000")),"") Here it is searching for "." as the delimiter, and fixing all numeric fields to three characters wide "000", and replacing any invalid entries to nothing "". The table column being assessed is [_data]. For example, this converts: B.1.1.529.1.2 to B.001.001.529.001.002. With all of the columns bing in consistent widths, numbers (as text) now sort correctly.

Hi Leila, very nice. Some thoughts for you:
    1. If you find my comments useful and don't want to reply to specific points - and for all youtubers, imo - please don't make a reply saying thanks. Yep, please don't. It takes us viewers 8 seconds to move to a mouse, aim for '> x replies', click on it and read your 'Thanks' and click it again to get it out of the way. That's 8 seconds for EVERY user who wants to read all the comments. A comment like that is courteous, but relatively low in value, and consumes our time in multiples.
If you do want to thank me, RUclips has given you the option to send me your heart ..err, send a heart, so that a heart symbol shows permanently without our having to open links up and close them. Imho.
    2. I suggest that when you use hotkeys, keyboard shortcuts, you use the most likely word that the associated letter was chosen for:
    - rather than 'everything' with Ctrl-A, say 'Select All'. Similarly for Ctrl-B say 'Branch'. Etc etc.
    - likewise, Ctrl-M for 'Multi-Rename Tool'. Saying the name reinforces our memory of the keystroke.
    3. I do like the red-running rectangle that you use to highlight a feature; how do you do that? In 'post' with Camtasia, maybe...
    4. Is this an Americanism? 'You have the ability to undo.' Having eyesight, fingers, a computer and a mouse provides the 'ability'; isn't 'option' the functional, unambiguous word?
    5. 7:07 [Renamed..] 'In the other folder as well' [in a subfolder] - but why? Because all the branch was selected in the operation.
    6. 'You get to select the karakters that you want to insert..' :-)
    7. Do you have a speech mannerism that substitutes 'd' for 'th'? Charming :-)
