    With Winterfell under siege and facing defeat, Theon Greyjoy (Alfie Allen) rejects the advice of Maester Luwin (Donald Sumpter) to abandon the castle and flee to the Night's Watch, and decides to fight to the death with his men. However, during a rallying speech, Theon is knocked unconscious by Dagmer (Ralph Ineson) and betrayed by his own men, who drag him off. Luwin, in an attempt to save Theon, is mortally wounded by Dagmer. Bran Stark (Isaac Hempstead-Wright) and his party emerge from hiding to find Winterfell sacked and Luwin dying in the Godswood, where he declares his loyalty and love for the Starks before having Osha (Natalia Tena) end his life. Bran and his group then escape the ruined remains of Winterfell, bound for the Wall.

    Luwin's (a minor character) death scene had infinitely more emotional impact than Dany's in the season finale. That shows you how far the writing fell off.

    I understand why people think this scene is sad, but think about it - regardless of whether Bran/Rickon found him or not, Luwin would have died. At least in this scenario, he died filled with hope. The two boys he cared for most in the world are alive, when he thought them dead. His last minutes alive were spent in happiness, when otherwise they would have been spent in despair.

      In the books he says he knew they were alive because Bran's legs should have been weak with all the muscle wasted away yet the bodies brought back to Winterfell showed no signs of this.

    _"There must always be a stark at Winterfell"_
    I think the saddest part seeing Winterfell burning on the horizon as the last Starks flee Winterfell for their lives.

    • @theonlylampshade

      ***** Indeed. And as someone who's read ADWD, I do know what you mean.

    • @theonlylampshade
      @theonlylampshade 9 лет назад +20

      ***** True enough. Although, Theon certainly did not help himself ending Stark rule in Winterfell.
      **Spoilers to follow**
      There is at least some feeling of justice coming. Stark loyalists like House Manderly prepare to switch to Stannis as he besieges Winterfell. And Asha Greyjoy after failing to convince Stannis to spare Theon, looks set to convince him to instead to behead him in Stark tradition.
      I really hope that Ramsay Bolton will be burned alive by Melisandre. An eye for an eye. Ramsay serves the most painful death going.

      I don't think he was denying his death.
      I think his final words to them were more an affirmation of his place of belonging. He had spent all his days as maester under the Starks and their strange old God, but he respected them and their ways. He passed away beneath the weirwood, accepting both the old and the new.
      I think it's kind of beautiful.
      Or something.

    This series does know how to break your heart.
    The end of season 1 - main "good" character dies;
    The end of season 2 - main "good" character's home is burned and his people - murdered;
    The end of season 3 - almost all the remaining "good" characters are betrayed and massacred;
    The start of season 4 - Stark's ancestral sword "Ice" is melted marking the complete Lannister's victory;
    The end of season 5 - main "good" character dies again.

    At the edge of the wolfswood, Bran turned in his basket for one last glimpse of the castle that had been his life. Wisps of smoke still rose into the grey sky, but no more than might have risen from Winterfell's chimneys on a cold autumn afternoon. Soot stains marked some of the arrow loops, and here and there a crack or a missing merlon could be seen in the curtain wall, but it seemed little enough from this distance. Beyond, the tops of the keeps and towers still stood as they had for hundreds of years, and it was hard to tell that the castle had been sacked and burned at all. The stone is strong, Bran told himself, the roots of the trees go deep, and under the ground the Kings of Winter sit their thrones. So long as those remained, Winterfell remained. It was not dead, just broken. Like me, he thought. I'm not dead either.

    I can’t even describe how perfect the Stark theme is. It makes my eyes water every time I hear it. It’s not just that it’s melancholic; in fact, I’d argue that it’s even somewhat heroic. It’s the perfect theme for a family that always fights to do the right thing, even when it costs them everything.

    In the show the audience is meant to believe that the ironborn burned Winterfell and not Ramsay as he does in the books. But if you think about it, the ironborn had a deal, that when they give Theon to the northeners, they are free to go. So why would they burn Winterfell? Ramsay also confirmed that he flayed those ironborn raiders from Winterfell, so they most likely accepted Robbs deal. AND: Maester Luwin said Bran and the others have to go, because they could come back. Why would the ironborn come back? But considering Ramsay did this, it makes sense. So the only logical conclusion is that Ramsay burned Winterfell in the show as well as in the book.

      I like how the show did it. They made us think Theon's men did this, but still left enough clues so that attentive viewers could pick up on the fact that something didn't add up. Yes, Ramsay burned Winterfell on the show. They just didn't want to tell us before the red wedding.

    What's really sad is he probably wasnt beyond saving. If they found bandages and medicine, theres a chance they could have saved him. But he knew that would only slow them down and waste time. He essentially sacrificed his life for the Starks, dying when he didnt absolutely have to just to make sure the boys got out safely.

    What makes it even sadder is this is the last time they were both alive in winterfell. Bran died in that cave, possessed by Bloodraven, as he himself says he's not Bran, and Rickon was hidden in the last hearth and probably learned Robb and his mother was dead from Greatjon who managed to return home, then betrayed by people who served his brother faithfully, then dies riddled with arrows mere inches from Jon, while his sister wrote him off coldly and matter of factly and gave him up for dead.
    Neither really survived the sack of winterfell.

    The utter joy on Luwin's face as he sees the boys alive and well. He's dead. He knows. And he is absolutely _fulfilled_ by the sight of Rickon running toward him and Hodor carrying Bran behind. His life is done, and he's at peace with that. But he needed to see the children he pulled into the world alive and do whatever else he could to see them safe before he _allowed_ himself to die. And he died at peace, knowing the charges he'd raised and loved since their first days were in the safest hands that he could ask for.
    The North remembers.

    This show was very well thought of once. The little chuckle Luwin had in his pain, adds so much depth to the character and their relationship dynamics. Even if it was written in the books, the actor did a great job. That's another thing about this show- the cruelly underrated acting of the side characters. Took the show to another dimension.

      I have to believe the series ended with the final episode of season 7, the wall fell, the dead killed everyone and noone won the throne, showing how pointless it all was in the end.
      Using season 8 as the ending is depressing AF, they broke the show entirety, removed anything that was positive and just rushed though entire plotlines in half an episode just to get to that horrendous ending.

Rickon is dancing with cannibals and unicorns on an island. Jon Snow dead. Arya is blind as a bat and her future seems to be that of an assassin. And Sansa is still derpy.
    And Winterfell is a Bolton place now. Fucks sake. Starks gets shit on until it's not possible to shit on them more...

    I never understood this scene until I read the books. When I watched the series I didn’t know whether they had been Theon’s men or the northmen who had burned the castle. Now I know it was Ramsey, who attacked the men who were besieging the castle by surprise, killed theon’s men and burned winterfell afterwards.

      The show was deliberately deceptive about it. You were supposed to be confused. Perhaps they felt that telling us the Boltons did this would make us see Roose Bolton's betrayal coming. But I think once Ramsay's identity is revealed in the season 3 finale, and the fact that he flayed Theon's men, most viewers would understand in retrospect that Ramsay was the one who did this.
