  • In this film I show the essential leather tools to get started in leather craft. I am keeping this very straightforward so that you do not need to purchase many tools to get into the hobby. I describe what each tool is for, and I make suggestions as to where you might buy them from.

    Hello Harry, ace video. I purchased a cheap £30 starter set off ebay and it all works fine,quite impressed with what I got for the cash, all the cutters work and punchers punch too. Made myself a stitching pony so I will practice making some leather covers for my tools. I am also doing the leather course at BB17. It is bound to get messy!

    Thanks Harry, I think you videos are great. Concerning the needles I am told that in the states, were I am, a 002 size is the same as a 2/0 in the U.K., and a size 2 in the states is very much larger. Thanks again, Please keep your videos coming.

    "easy to please" ;) Very grounded, but also very inspiring beginners advice on tools... not to forget honest... thank you for that... I got most of it together I think... now I only need to choose a project and give it a go while shamelessly using the tricks in all of your videos. ;) Thank you so much for all your efforts!

    Perfect timing for this video Harry! I am currently looking for some basic tools and have wondered where to start. I have watched you other videos on leather work and they have inspired me to give it a go. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on the subject.

    Just to say, I have followed your videos, and totally agree with your ethos on purchasing, I have only bought one "expensive" tool, a Jpanese awl, but other than that I have spent time on buying and tuning the tools, its part of the learning process, an essential part imho.
    Of course as soon as I made the stitching pony, ie progressing from absolute basics, I realised I had to get in to woodworking. lol
    I soon realised harpening was a problem for me, but I am gtting there,
    I have three stones , incluing one Diamond one, and have removed the oven door to make a flat plate for the wet and finishing and polishing.
    Of course the money I saved on tools etc, is available to spend on a brand new oven :)

    Thank you for posting this very interesting video. I think that you should have mentioned a "stitching clam" or a "stitching pony". I hand stitched exactly one project, then went out to the shed and made my first stitching pony! It has made hand stitching so much more enjoyable!

    Harry, once again an interesting and very informative video, really useful for getting a non leather worker like me started in the hobby. I've always had an urge to try some leather work but not knowing what tools to buy or where to get them was one stumbling block, the next stumbling block as with many hobbies whether it's woodwork, metalwork or leather work is where to buy the materials and what materials to buy. I've watched your video on veg tanned leather and I like the idea of that material, but where does one get it in small quantities and what weight would I choose for making a belt? I've thought of making a belt as I'm guessing it's one of the simpler projects and it would be useful and very nice to wear something I'd made myself. Again your belt making video was excellent and made the process look easier than I'm sure it is, however I quite fancy giving it a go!

    Harry, where's the best place to buy leather hide from? They're either phenomenally expensive ( just starting out, so will most likely end up as practice scraps) or, the size of a postage stamp. Great videos brother, keep em coming. thank you.

    Harry, I like the leather skiving knife with the replaceable blades. Some look like large razor blades for shaving ones whiskers in a push or pull fashion. I would suppose the latter is safer.
    I don't want to purchase anything more that that inexpensive particular tool for a few projects. Here in the states, I have been looking around and can't find that one. I am sure others of different design work well, but if you have used this tool and show it in action, can you provide a link to see it being used properly. I can't find what you call "Your Banner Page" Perhaps a term commonly used, but not for a older guy like me. Thanks. I enjoy your easy going tone and a bit of humor for theatric ascetics which is welcome compared to playing loud head-banging music. Absolutely awesome video, explaining the basic tools that we can use with leather! I have purchased several of these tools after watching you using them in your videos, so it is an excellent idea that you uploaded this video to help us (specially non English speakers) to know the English name for the tools. Thanks again and keep up the good work!:-)

    I make holsters and belts mag holders that kind of things. I've found amazon to be a very good place to get tools. I use a number 3 stitching chisel for small projects and a 6 on holsters. I own a 4 but the holes are way to close together. It maybe the brand also.

    Good video!! By the way, everything would be much easier if anybody in Europe would speak the same language. Beside the language, it could also be a german video. We have the same telephone, same tools, same clothes, same houses, same look of the gardens, ... everything looks the same. Even the way you are explaining the tools is absolutely equal. It really makes me sad that there is not more interaction between England and Germany.

    Greetings Harry and Happy New Year! Love the vid, thanks for analysis. I see in the background a lot of product. My question about them is about production. How does one manage if they want to produce a lot item for a fair for instance to save time? Especially sewing aspects. Is there a way to sew fast by hand? Like sew multiple stitches at one time then pull the thread? Any helpful hints you can give for production runs would be great. Maybe a vid? Thanks Harry

      Jo Allan I don't need a hand bag, and I get my leather pieces from a leather shop for cheap since they are scraps. I would like to make a satchel for my laptop though, but haven't found one big enough (15" laptop) but if they do sell one cheap for repair I could think about your advice!

    Have to make a repair on my wifes purse. Need to sew in a new tab to hold d rings for the straps. Original tabs were sewn in at the factory by machine but, of course, I must repair it by hand. What would be the best thread material to use? Original thread was blue to match the purse color.

    • @harryrogers
      @harryrogers  7 лет назад

      John - its difficult to say without seeing...I suspect the original thread was probably bonded nylon.....its obviously important you get the colour right and the thickness matches...if hand sewing you may be as well off with a linen type thread... but I think its as much a matter of seeing what you can find that matches in.

    Morning Harry.
    I have lots of small tools for my leatherworking, and they pretty much end up in a muddle, I am currently making a board which will sit in my airing cupboard when not in use, and in the kitchen when I am crafting.
    using a french cleat for hanging.
    Do you have any suggestions, my woodworking tools are going to be on an identical board [formerly two Ikea shelves which are about 250mm by 600mm. They are veneered, so no cutting in to the surface.
    I was thinking a mix of magnetic strips, , little shelves with rails etc etc, do you haveany additional ideas?
    I will have one board for woodworking and one for leatherworking, and maybe one for painting [I have a lot of Valejo paints]. I just cant remember where everything is!

    • @XaBadMojoX
      @XaBadMojoX 7 лет назад

      Lol!!! not remembering where I put things is a problem for me. So much so that it adds much time to my project. :-)

    • @ladygardener100
      @ladygardener100 7 лет назад

      i think I 've sorted it, I have three shelves [ex Ikea bookcase]. So I now have one board for my antique woodworking tools, one which is for modern tools, and one for my main leatherworking things, I have them on cup hooks or clips or or othe things, or channels to hold them firmly in place, the boards are going to move from airing cupbpoard [my shed, lol], to kitchen [workshop] or to the workbench, the workbench will sit under a worktop so occasionally everything can look neat, tidy, organised. I will use the french cleat system for flexibility.
      I've ordered magnetic tool bars and small magnets.

    I am wondering what brand and style edger are you using? I know you do a lot of belts so I figure the one you are using must be good. I have bought a couple, but none that will hold an edge for very long.

      I have Dixons..not available now and Tandy....with the Tandy the professional version is better for rounding edges......there are two types angled and rounded cut tools.
