Those Audi 200s were insane. Forced the SCCA to rewrite the entire rule book the following season which essentially changed Trans-am into a spec series.
Stuck would win the championship if he drove all races. He shared car with Walter Rohrl, another legend. And even with all handicaps they forced on Audi, they still won title.
@@diesel_cat6389 Stuck had most wins. If you count in Rohrls points, both driving legends and audi factory drivers that developed that car, audi would be 1-2. Those cars were just another level. Purebreed racers, not just pumped stock cars like rest of the field.
I was too young to understand the politics of racing when this race occurred, but it seems to me the “anti-import” sentiment was the beginning of the end of Trans-Am’s 80’s glory days. The racing and names were good for another 5 years or so but slowly the big names and up and comers went to other series. By the early 2000’s TA was a shell of itself, when I saw them at Texas Motor Speedway as an ALMS opener. Mostly Pro-Am drivers paying out of pocket to race. By my reckoning the writing was on the wall for pipe and fiberglass cars, GT racing was the future. TA is still around, it runs in conjunction with a historic racing series. TA2 is actually the series to watch. NASCAR teams run their development drivers through there as the importance of road racing in NASCAR increases. I’d love to see TA regain its former glory, and as GT racing costs spiral into the stratosphere, maybe the ole pipe n fiberglass cars will get their due again.
I saw Han Stuck race that Audi at Sears Point and he was passing people on the outside, so cool to see. At some point they punished the Audis by dramatically increased their weight, turned down their boost and made them run on the skinnier tires. A shame they didn't just let the other teams try to catch up.
The rest of the teams couldn't keep up since they were Privateers, Audi came in with 4 times the budget and won because they had better tire wear than anyone else, they weren't the fastest on a single lap but had better Chassis Design and AWD to help with traction and tire wear later on in the race. In Imsa, they still were reaping the benefits of that tire wear advantage, but were outqualified by the Nissans, Chevies, and Mercury Cougar on 1 lap pace, all.of which used antiquated tech. Though overall race pace meant it could last better than everyone else in a war of attrition. The Turbo inline 5 just couldn't bear the mandatory additional ballast everyone ran, and always did Catch up To the Mercury Cougar-X in the championship standings.
I am trying to get photos of the #8 Yellow camaro when it had the red FSI on the hood 21:50 this is the only race I found with it racing. I been trying to building Forza Horizion 4 but have not found anything besides the documentary story of Camaro 67- 88. I been trying to build it since 2017 in the Forza games
Love you American's.... change the rules when you're getting beaten, and still lose. Then the next year, tell Audi you're not welcome to play again....🤣👌
@@mchristr Audi was just smarter. They perfected the 4wd drive system. Punishing them for something like that is just a bit pathetic really. Also, the Audi's weren't the only turbocharged cars that year. So yeah, they we're slowing the Audi's down to make it less embarrassing for their shit American cars instead of trying to catch up.
It was more because of the AWD. The turbo or engine didn't matter, as shown V6 and V8 cars could still hold their ground. I agree. Banning the use of AWD was stupid and limited the amount of manufactures willing to ever think about competing. Further cements Audis racing heritage

no awd and the engine had to be made in the usa. its an understatement to say they rest of the top drivers were salted. well salted lol
Yep, instead of advancing the sport and trying to compete with Audi, they changed the rules….🙄

Yes, but they still kept winning. :D
yeah, those "handicaps" and they still kicked ass

Then Audi took their cars to IMSA GTO in '89 and dominated there, too.

I wish I was alive to see Trans Am. Looks fun as hell.
Trans am is still around and you can watch it on RUclips
Modern day trans-am is pretty sweet. 850+ bhp Trans-Am cars and a solid mix of GT cars. Not to mention TA2 has really good racing to add to it
How the hell did you leave this comment if you are wishing you were alive? 🤔🤡
Thank you for posting. I missed most of the Trans Am races due to raising a family, now I can enjoy!
Starshot! The 80s we're beautiful
That Ford V8 sound sweet!
Nice variety of cars & engines 💪
I love the race, of course, but I also love the vintage commercials from my childhood!

44 STARTERS! And could've been 50! Now they're lucky to hit double figures.
That's Roseville, California Scott Pruett is from not Michigan
Thanks for upping these pearls.
Who's here thanks to John Ficarra?
That Audi has the most un-German parking job on the grid that I have ever seen.
yeah,Bob Jenkins.remember him as co-commentator with Benny Parson's in NASCAR
33:31 breathtaking.

Saw a race with Hans stuck /Audi in '92 ? The second place guy said he saw stucks bumper the first lap and never again. Stuck won 🏆
...if at first you can't win, just get E'm to Shift the Goalposts. Add a couple hundred of Kilos in the back seat area, that'll make Us Faster.????
Yeah. They ended up helping weight distribution, giving them a better advantage when the fuel takes got low and over all corning stability
passing marks?
not so much as a peep about the Canadian in his first trans am race and finishing 4th. , not bad huh ?
Bruce Jenner at Row 12, finally been Caitlyn Jenner after too much racing at "Trans"-Am Series.
:D restriction on turbo charge and 200 Pounds more, this way to stop the the cars and driver :D
