Music in the barn. Turn music on in the barn when milking. Soon, she’ll know to come to the barn on her own when you turn the music on. Cows love music. My grandfather did this.
There are quite a few YT videos showing people playing music to cows. Cows can be seen gathering around the musician and running across fields to get closer to the music. I find it a joy to watch.
What a wonderful surprise! She is adorable! Did you know that in other countries the person that is milking rests their head against the cow for more stability. The closer you are the less likely they will kick you. Enjoy your wonderful adventure and thank you for sharing.
Thank you for commenting that it took time for you to get a cow. I want one but it's going to take a few years for me as well. I have to find some solace in patience as I have too many other things to focus on at this time.
So neat!! And no, I’m not a farm person, but I read a lot of James Herriot so I’m not squeamish 😄 He was always arm deep in a cow… Congrats on a healthy baby 🐮 ❤️
Thank you for inspiring me to finally just take the first step of faith and starting my new podcast. :) I finally just uploaded Episode 01 and I am encouraged. I love listening to your videos in the background when I cook and clean and watch my kids, etc. :) God bless you and your family. :)
It is interesting to see how you use the halter. I have never halter trained mine. I've thought about trying, but I guess I never needed it. I always pull the calf and bottle feed them, so the cow has to come in to be milked to feel better. Kudos to you for hand milking. I have never gotten proficient at it. I am spoiled with a milking machine. I love my cows. I have guernseys and jerseys.
My cows don't poop in the milking stall unless they are really nervous or mad at me, which I try to never let happen. We live quite a bit south from you, so I don't really have to worry about cold weather. Our barn is dirt floor, so I just drove some T-posts into the ground to wire some old gates to, and that is my present milking stall. I don't use a headgate. I have the milking stall just under a bay in the barn.
I am always amazed by how much bigger the place is then I always think. So much things to do and to explore! Don't you just want to go and visit and help out for a week?!
If you're hand milking I reccomend milking into an empty quart sized plastic orange juice bottle like the Simply Orange brand. The teet fits down in there perfectly and the narrow neck allows your free hand to hold it easily. It greatly limits bugs and dirt and manure getting in your milk and you spill less if she kicks for some reason. I just take my glass jars to the barn with me in a milk crate and pour the milk into them when I fill the quart jug, screw the lid on the glass jar and continue milking into the plastic one repeating til she's milked out.
If this is her first freshening you are really lucky she was so calm! I was a pregnant and freshened herd manager and milked some really really difficult first fresheners! 😅
Really enjoyed learning about how things progressed with the calf..boy, she wants that baby near her. I had to laugh when I saw that drainage hole in the barn..we have one in our 200 yr old house cellar..so no water gathers in basement…old-timers really knew what they were doing..👍..Liz xxo
P.S. If you're going to be the sole milker (especially when your baby gets here), it's nice to have a small machine to milk out quickly within a few minutes. Handmilking is quaint and romatical (grin), but when the honeymoon phase is over, sometimes it's nice just to have a machine, especially when you're milking twice a day. Now you get the joy of experimenting with homemade dairy recipes...butter, cheeses, yogurt, etc. Colostrum cubes are great in smoothies. Good luck, have fun and God bless! :)
June is such a good mom … it’s so cute to see the calf follow her around. And how nice that the calf was born with no complications… since you all were at church🙂
Such splendid news, congratulations! I know you’ve been eager to milk your cow since long before you brought her home. It is a major marker of progress on your homestead. I couldn’t help but see all the community support you have coming together to help you. It warms my spirit. Hope you don’t mind me asking, are you due to have baby number 7 now? (If so, I’m hoping you have a girl!)
Watching this momma and her baby was pretty special. And I am really enjoying this style of video where it's more relaxed and less staged or formal. So inviting to watch. Take care of yourself too with your sweet one on the way.
Such an exciting adventure for your family and it seems the Lord has sent you plenty of wise friends to give you advice and help you along the way. Looking forward to watching the journey. Thank you for sharing with us 💗
Describing the preg check made me laugh. I work in computers and during college I did IT for the vet school - first time I saw a cow getting a preg check was quite eye opening 😂
Justin Rhodes does a mastitis test on the milk every Monday, rain or shine. He says if you’re not testing, you’re guessing. And mastitis is awful. Congratulations!
The Lord had this in hand! What a blessing. So happy for your family. You've helped me so much, and I'm just excited for you. And how wonderful your friends and family are there to help. I hope you are feeling well.
I agree with the music...my Jersey milker used to like oldies. Also, when leading her stay closer to her head so she can't get a run on you or pull you down. Nothing better than fresh milk from the farm.
I’m so excited for you guys! You teach us so much about milking 101. How blessed to have friends that can mentor and share their knowledge with you. I’ve never heard of crossing cattle breeds like that before. That farm baby is too cute, love those ears! I even love how protective mama is. All of your training and hard work has paid off, how satisfying that must be! Can’t wait for all the videos relating to all things “June and baby” and the ways you use her milk. You all are amazing! 🐄💐 (loving that sun hat on you!)
It’s like watching a movie of my life haha.. we got a Jersey 5 months ago and she had her calf July 2nd. I had never milked a cow before.. just goats. My calf is only nursing on the front 2 teets.. so I just milk her back teets for now. We will start separating the calf at 2 week post birth (this Friday night will be the first night). What I have found to be helpful with milking is to milk into a quart mason jar close to the teet (one teet at a time) and dump the quart jar into a half gallon or gallon jar with a cover to protect from bad bacteria. That way I don’t have to worry about her kicking the bucket over or poop/pee splattering in it. We will also calf share to help with flexibility in our schedule :) it was nice to see someone else experiencing the same thing I am right now. Excited to see what you plan on doing with all the milk! I have made yogurt and cheese so far :)
How adorable! I grew up in Flint Hill and then my parents moved right down the road from your folks store. I now live one county over. So glad I found you on RUclips.
Hi Lisa!! You’re looking lovely this morning…. Great video, you will love your Jerseys they are very versatile cow’s!!! You’ll learn much more about them as time goes by!!! Congratulations!!!
Great! That little heifer will be great for producing your beef for the year. We really like having dairy crosses. You can breed her back to something like an Angus and get a nice beefy calf who grows really well with the extra milk from the jersey influence. Also..if she favors the front quarters, you can milk out the back 2 quarters completely and leave the front 2 for the calf. Only milking those out a little if the calf isn't taking it all. What we usually do is milk out whatever the calf (or goat) doesn't take in the evenings when we separate them. That way milk production stays up and risk of mastitis is lowered. Good luck!
Congratulations cow momma! My jersey is a lot like yours.... I end up with bruises all the time but only because she gets so excited. My cow’s back two teets are smaller than the front two. I’m just so excited for you guys!
Awesome….milk already…..I love their big eyes…. Halter train your calf because you might have to tie her next to Mom as she gets older. Living Traditions has a great set up for her milking station……you’re family is doing such a great job on the homestead…..👍
What a sweet addition to your family calfs are so cute. I know it’s very tempting to leave the holter on. But I have seen where people have done that, and it wore a nasty hole in their nose all the way to the bone. Infection starts. And there you have a big mess on your hands. It’s so convenient and so easy to leave it on, but pleas don’t. I enjoy your videos so much and the family that came out and helped to build your milk stand, it’s funny I found them just a few days go I believe. And I think it is the video on the day they were going to help you build a milking stand wonderful family.
It's about taking note of what's happening. My friend always had halters on her dairy cows and calves. She never had any issues with sores from them. Much easier to clip a lead on them.
Thank you for the milk stand idea! I have been milking our goat for 3 weeks now without a feeder 😬 my husband works from 6am-9pm + and hasn’t had the time to build that part. We had a surprise birth with her kid as well and weren’t prepared with the everything beforehand. I have all 3 kids with me each morning to milk. One to hold Betsy’s Alfa pellets and the other to keep the cats & dogs away from getting under the goat in order to get milk, as well as entertaining the baby. Purely a team effort every morning lol that half a barrel idea is perfect! 👌🏼
She’s adorable! What an awesome step to self sustainability. Side note, I’m currently 17 weeks pregnant and love seeing someone else do farm chores bump in tow. I’m struggling to find some good maternity jeans like you had on. Would love it if you would share. Congrats on the new edition! ❤️

Is she relaxed and happy because she just gave birth? I read someone’s post to play music. Bach has nice soothing music. What a gift to have a family help you get situated! Congratulations! 🐄
Congratulations on the baby. With the future plans of the milking parlor.... I know that our dairy friend has 14 cows that she milks. Her set up is very similar to what you have. However she brings her cows in one side and out another. It may be hard to turn her around and get her out of that little tiny door as well

yep, that's what we did in australia
What a happy surprise! So much for making plans…. “We plan, God laughs”
Never a dull moment on a farm. Also, you wear your babies all the time, why wouldn’t she want hers with her too?? 😂
Thank you for commenting that it took time for you to get a cow. I want one but it's going to take a few years for me as well. I have to find some solace in patience as I have too many other things to focus on at this time.
I think it’s kinda cute that you and your cow could be pregnant together for a little while 💕
You did an excellent job of explaining the "process". I think even people not familiar with farm life will understand a bit better.
Lisa, I am just so amazed! My prayers are with you every day! What a precious family and homestead you have. God is with you and loves you so much!
I have been waiting for this video!!! Her calf is so cute! Those little ears!!! And Lisa you look so beautiful you are glowing with your pregnancy!!
Beautiful calf and milking setting
With short teats, the easiest way to hand milk is to use a bit of bag balm/udder butter on the teats, and proceed milking using the strip method.
Oh my goodness how precious! Those ears! Congratulations. Mama and baby are so pretty.

I’ve hand milked up to 4 cows 2x daily at times, for many years. There is nothing “un-doable” or “quaint” about it.
Congratulations🐄☺️!!!!! She’s so cute! So nice of your friends to come and help with the stand. Have a nice day!!
This is really special! The patience you have for learning and teaching is amazing! Enjoy your new addition to the farmhouse!
I just can't get enough of these farm life vlogs. Love them so much.
The calf has a cute loppy gait appearance like a character in the Star Wars galactic bar scene. Beautiful calf. Love her ears.

Mastitis won’t make you sick though. It just off-sets the taste. Very salty. 🤪
A great time to get a halter on the calf get her used to being led or stall tied.
Just finally got a halter on her last night! It was challenging!

Omg!! How sweet! Love seeing the process!
Love love this. My childhood . T u so much for sharing
You are a natural so it’s no surprise the mama responds so well to you. Thank you for sharing. Best wishes and congrats on the new homestead member.

Really enjoyed watching this, thanks for sharing..
I learned so much. Really enjoyed this! Of course mama wants baby near!! So precious. Thankyou for sharing!!!
Wow! Congratulations!
Thanks for sharing as you learn! My grandfather had jerseys and it was fun to imagine all that happening in his life.
How exciting! Always something going on that you don't expect🤗 She did a beautiful job on the milk stand👏🏼
For ideas with you milking setup check out Living Traditions Homestead channel with Kevin and Sarah. I believe they are in Missouri also.
Very cool I love cow's,God bless.

I need to find some good ones! These are just my usual ones with a ponytail holder to keep them shut.
