Such a great video, the best ever DITL video I’ve ever seen. Each moment touched me as I was able to really be there with you, watch what you do and observe the plants and animals. It was such a treat to hear your candid thoughts and how you talk to your animals. Then the dinner you cooked just really hit the spot with me. I deglaze my skillet with wine, mushrooms and often shallots as well. Thank you so much for sharing. As it happened it was a perfect video to start my day and one I’ve saved to watch again to encourage this special feeling I have now.

I think a 5 gallon bucket makes great sense for the milking! Would be a lot harder to kick over than that bucket and much easier to catch all the milk
I milked the cows for several years on my parents' farm, we always used a 5-gallon bucket.🙃
It's a lot more stable than the little metal ones, and taller.

Lisa, watching you in this video reminds me of my family story of my paternal Iowa grandmother who, while working one day on the farm, put down her water buckets in the pasture and went inside the farmhouse to have a baby! Not saying that will happen to you but, you evidently are a strong woman and you remind me of her! All the best of luck to you and the little one to come!
When my dad milked he always put some milk in an old coffee can for the kitties that lived at the barn.
Just love these videos! It is incredible how much work you have done over the last few years it looks so nice. Those animals have the life! It is so relaxing just walking through your farm. The garden looks great and we used your plans to build a tuteur for our garden and I love it! ❤️
You are so frugal you prob do this already, but you can chop that basil and put on ice cube trays w a little water or broth and freeze. Pop out and put into a freezer container to add instantly to soups, stew or other dishes. Love watching your channel. I grew up on 40 acres. I’m 61 and really miss my garden so I live through your channel. We had raised bed in our suburban small lot side yard but put a pool in for our 8 grands. As a child our gardens were huge. Entire fields of corn then other garden for canning for the winter. Lots of beans, peas,potatoes, watermelon, cantaloupe, squash, zucchini….Kentucky wonder was and is my fav green bean. And the tomatoes were always the best and on a saucer along with cucumbers at every meal. Oh and my moms fried okra and fried corn were second to none!

Have you thought about an electric chicken net? I use that along with a hawk net over the top. I’ve had zero issues with dogs or other animals getting in my coop.

Hey Lisa! I just wanted to give a quick bit of advice as to your bucket. They do make stainless steel milk buckets in various sizes. We find a two-gallon works fine for our Jerseys. I would NOT use a plastic five gallon bucket even if it is food grade. It's important you use stainless steel because plastic can get scratches and such that harbor bacteria. Additionally, milk solids build up on plastic in a way that they do not on stainless, so you are able to get a much cleaner bucket every time.
I have a few posts over on my channel about homestead dairy, milk cow tips, etc. that you might find useful as your family enjoys fresh milk. :)

Lively and beautiful family on your homestead. Make my heart ache for my youthfulness and young children.
I raised goats for many many years. I found out when I raised Boer goats they do not eat everything...lol. They are picky. If you want them to clean a field during summer do not give them any grain what so ever. Keep their area small and move them only after they eat all they will eat (cause they are very picky). Always keep your goats on the side of the fence that is tacked to wood post or fence clipped to a metal post. Using a fence stretcher to get fence tight before tacking, nailing or fence stapling helps a lot. If they are on the opposite side of fence attachment when they rub their bodies down the wire and stretch it, they will get out. Luke can use a car bumper Jack to pull up those metal t post. It works like a charm. 😁 God bless y'all

Our goats respect our electric fence and it was pretty easy to milk them.
If the goats don’t work for you through, don’t feel bad about switching stuff up.
Foraging pigs are awesome at clearing land also.
Electric fence with a battery pack. That's what we always used for our sheep but also round the chicken pen. The kids quickly learn how to switch them off and have never been shocked. They are nice and quick and easy to move so would be easy for sectioning off the woods for the goats.
There is a tool Luke can use to pull up the metal post. Good luck with the goats, we are lucky with our girls they stay put. I love how you show your garden weeds, undone projects and all. It's real life not perfect life. Perfect!

Vinegar makes a great weed killer…I wash veggies in vinegar and water and I pour it on the weeds or I clean the coffee pot and I pour the hot vinegar on weeds.

I love watching your channel and watching you grow your homestead. Please becareful leading your cow the way you do. It's very dangerous and you could get trampled if she ever spooked standing in front of her pulling like you do. Take it from a farmer who learned the hard way.
I've been closer and she's head butted me to the ground, so I stay away now. Haha We're getting a lot better!
If you use bread ties or twine to tie the cucumbers up the trellis they will listen to you a lot better! And then you can untie the ties and tie the new pieces you want to train
We always have electric fence for our goats. One hot fence wire near the bottom would probably work!

Your veg garden looks super smart and happy
If you cut the "sucker" branches off, the plant will use that wasted energy on making more tomato's. That's why those tall wild stems are called "sucker" because they suck the energy from the main plant. I am terrible probably at explaining this. I was taught this as a very young child helping grandparents/parents in the garden. I just know how to do it and how beneficial it is to your plant!
5 gallon bucket is a great idea, less likely to knock over than the little bucket!

If you start milking by putting the milking bucket on a low step stool until your aim gets better it will help your hit to miss ratio

We got goats for the same reason. Plus we also want milk. And they are a pain with the escaping however I will say that if you get the proper fencing for them it's not as bad. Go panels really do work the best. We had a mesh electrical fence that also worked very well until the electrifying box decided not to have strong impulse anymore. They will eat everything if you do section off. So if you have goat panels you actually can move them around pretty easily as well.

I made the sourdough English muffins today. I baked them at 350 deg in a muffintop pan. They were perfect! I wish I could attach a picture! I’ll try. I tried but I couldn’t.

****** When we had a pig, dogs and other animals in a fenced-in area we took chicken wire and attached it about maybe a foot up on the fencing with tie wire and rolled it out and flatten it down and buried the rest of the chicken wire in the ground into like a trench/ditch on both sides so that no animals could dig ( when they tried to dig up the dirt they would hit the wire and that's as far as they could go) or push in or out from either side. When the grass grew into it, it became even stronger. Have you ever tried to pull wire up out of grass? It's really hard to do. We covered it with enough dirt and flat out the dirt so we could cut the grass with out hitting it with the lawn mower or weed eater. Helpful hint: you may would be able to get a wide chicken wire folded in the middle long ways attach it to the bottom of your fencing at the fold and have enough chicken wire to be buried on both sides of your fence at the bottom. I use that same strainer for our goats milk. It still lets hair through 😬 I add a paper towel beneath the training part to catch anything that would otherwise slip by.

Goats are SO picky
We have to use tall electric fencing to contain ours. Our buck cleared my entire flower bed after I had just spent all day putting it together. He figured out how to get off his line. 😫

Yes, our pigs did an incredible job clearing out our weeds and overturning the soil 👍🏼 just “good luck” relocating them to a new area.
Just a side note- the fed from the farm meat that you advertise isn’t organic. Pigs are fed grain and don’t 100% graze.
Also if your ever interested in selling your calf you’d have a buyer in is. I’ve been searching for an A2 calf that is pasture raised and has not been vaccinated.

We started with chickens, then goats, then milk cows.
It's nice that you got such a good, docile momma for your first milking cow!

We ended up getting rid of our goats too, although they did an EXCELLENT job of clearing our pastures, and there is literally no better way to get rid of poison ivy!
We had no need to section off parts, in our experience they are picky about eating but what they prefer is exactly what you need them to clear🙂.
The escape artist tendencies are why we finally got rid of them.

Get pigs to clear the forest. Use an electric netting fence like the one from premier one. Do Kune kune so they aren’t unmanageable then butcher when they become unmanageable.

My grandmother always tied the leg to the tail while milking so if the cow ever wanted to kick, she couldn't hurt anyone around

If you are still feeding the goats grain they wont eat forage to much. Your garden is okay. Most people never staked their tomatoes long ago anyway. Your doing a great job. Blessings !!!
If you or a friend has pigs have them clear the area! They are much more efficient and will get it down to the dirt!

Lots of watermelons sound good. Have you considered for those veg, like zucchini, that are vine grown having them grow downward along the frame you have so they are not fighting gravity, as it is their wont to just grow as a vine along the ground? They can grow down over fences even or a laundry pole and can get quite large. The meal looked delicious and quick.
You could steak the goats out with a chain and a stake driven in then round. Then you could move from area to area

My DIL cans cantaloupe. Evidently it’s delicious. My understanding is that one has to have a very consistently warm and looong growing season to grow cantaloupe, or a hot house. We are too far north to even attempt it, but I can’t wait to try her canned cantaloupe next time we see them.

Premier one electric goat fence is your bet for containing them. I love goats, but proper electric fence is the only way to go.
For the goat escapees; how about the premier one electric fencing? Then you can move them section by section through your woods? thats my plan when we move to our acreage
