This game is the ultimate masochist test. It made me hate it so much when playing it but at the end I had a pleasant feeling of accomplishment and now I look back at it very fondly.
Nah. DQ2 is probably the second most masochistic game on CONSOLES. Phantasy Star 2 holds that position rather firmly. You want brutal? The attack equation is wonky to where Rolf, the main character gets a damage modifier less than his companion Nei, and despite having FAR superior attack stats, and having a weapon that only attacks one enemy at a time, he'll deal 1/4, then 1/3, then 1/2, then finally 3/4, then finally on par, and just before Nei leaves the party, just over her damage output. This despite she gets two attacks per round and has such substantially lower weapon attack and strength attack stats. Enemy encounter rate is higher than any rouge-like or their predecessors, the Wizardry series and MUDs. Actually higher than any other game in both the Phantasy Star series, by far, and higher than any other JRPG ever released before or since, by a fairly sizeable margin. The dungeons are designed to be absolutely similar, with a camera zoom that makes it very hard to determine position, with long corridors that often lead to dead ends. Almost every new dungeon is larger than the last...well until the final dungeon and one strange one mid-way that's surprisingly short and sweet, and one of the last, and most significant not only is super large, but has warp tiles that lead to massive rooms and corridors with dead-ends, where only a bare handful have extremely rare one-time uber gear that is absolutely necessary to beat the game (no really, the game is absolutely gear dependent for defense and physical offense...gracefully not for Techs), and several drop down rooms, where multiple tiles and drops go around in circles and it's VERY hard to tell where you are based on both the encounter rate AND the scope of the various rooms and corridors along with their identical tilesets, design, and even direction. You actually require a map to find everything, and even then most people get lost as it makes a comparison to Rhone look like a Chutes and Ladders vs Trivial Pursuit as a social commentary edition from your Grandfather's generation so nothing makes any sense relative to you unless you happened to study that era thoroughly. As painful as DQ2 is, and yes, it is painful, I hate to say it, but it has NOTHING on the shitstorm that PS2 craps on gamers. OH, did I mention that leveling in PS2 is impossibly slow? You need to exploit two respawning monsters. Even then it takes about 1/3rd the time to hit cap exploiting Goopi's as it would to hit half the level cap using a similar monster in Phantasy Star 2. I've hit cap, that took over 200 hours alone. No seriously, 200 hours gametime. Not possible without emulation and thus speedup functions. DQ2's cap takes about 40~80 hours depending on luck and how often the Goopi's respawn, and that's NES edition. It's faster in teh remakes. PS2 remake? HAHAHAHA, no, they made it just as slow and obnoxious.
@@bugsterlincapoop7900 Unless you've replayed it over 200x to completion over the years. Insomnia from 7 to 19, means a lot of excess free time. Of course without music. It also means I've reread quite a few books 5+ times. Until DQ3 came out, it was Zelda 1+2, DQ2 and FF1 that took up my nights when I played games at that particular period of my childhood. I don't know, I rather enjoy it. There's a certain sense of accomplishment getting through that dungeon in one piece.
Same. Hearing it fade in told me that wow, I really was in Moonbrooke. I played Dragon Warrior II when it wad brand new and this brought back so many memories.
@@BTG514 I too love that theme, but it might be because of the feeling I got when the party was finally complete. A great moment when you step out of that town.
Midi aside, the way they used Sugiyama's works in DQB1 and DQB2 was nothing short of genius. Especially this music in Moonbrooke and Homeland in Rimuldar.

I've only been playing DQ for a few years, but this part 4:22-5:44 Has always been effectively nostalgic for me. Almost something reminiscent of playing Pokemon in the early 2000s.
So just me or does this make anyone else cry? This song (or 2 songs really) is so perfectly fitting of Dragon Quest. A mysterious world, a somber moment, and then continuing on with hope
The third theme almost feels like the game is trying to comfort you, telling you that things will be fine now you have a full party. It has got to be the most deceiving theme in the entire series.
This entire song sends me to a different place in my mind, a place filled with nostalgic memories, creative ideas, many adventures and just in general so much fun. It’s honestly my favourite side of me as a person. And this entire soundtrack takes me there every time. Thank you Koichi Sugiyama for all of the amazing songs.
There are always games that I considered an enigma when I was younger, mostly because I'd only heard of them and didn't have the means to play them at the time. DQII was one among them. I'd already played all the way through DQI, touched a little upon III, and played almost the rest of the series, but it wasn't until the Switch got the Erdrick trilogy that I finally played DQII. I fell in love with these overworld themes, and I was astonished at how much larger the world was in comparison to the world in the first game, considering you can visit said world as a single stop on your journey. I fell in love with the game, the characters, and the music, though it didn't take long for me to begin seeing some of its "shortcomings" I'd heard of. It's definitely the toughest DQ game I've played so far, but it's still worth the journey. Listening to this song makes me want to get back into it.
Let me talk a bit about my story. Unlike most people here, I’ve never grown up playing Dragon Quest. I’ve never heard of Dragon Quest until my late teens when I started brushing up on video game history as a whole. Even then, DQ was always just “that classic rpg series that japan was nuts about”. Not of much interest. But recently, DQ has been getting so much buzz on the Switch. DQ Builders released, DQ Builders 2, DQ XI S were shown, and then, finally, DQ got its very own Hero representative in Smash Bros. That did it for me. I pretty much started going deep into the list of released games and the lore, like I had done with Persona before it. I also decided to play Builders 1 at least. And boy, do they choose to use some amazing themes for it! I’m happy to say that I’m probably buying Builders 2 when I finish 1, and likely will get XI S when it comes out. And probably play I - IX someday before the end of my life (not X, I can’t read japanese), but that might take quite a while.
SuperPaperPokemon Dragon Quest 11 is my favorite game of all time, and now that it’s coming to the switch with the option of switching between symphonic (better) and midi music it’ll be 10 times better. I definitely recommend buying it, you will not be disappointed. I never played dq builders 1 but i did play and beat 2 and it was definitely a fun game, i just think that 11 has such a beautiful world, unique characters, and awesome music. My point is: definitely get 11 for the switch when its released; you don’t need to know anything about the game in order to have a really good experience
I'm a bit like you. I first came in contact with the series as an adult, but it's really become my favorite. Many of the things I loved when I was younger don't appeal as much to me (sadly this includes modern Pokemon), but DQ is really different. It's so charming and the music is beautiful. It's unlike anything else I've ever played and now it's dear to my heart. Cheers from a fellow fan, and hope you have a good time!

This is one of those DQ songs I started to immediately sing along with on my first time hearing it. Like... what the heck, how do I know so much DQ music BEFORE playing??
Is it just me, or is Unknown World a staple in the Erdrick trilogy? There are three Symphonic Suite versions. The standalone one for DQ1, the version with A Lonely Youth, the main overworld of DQ2, and the vastly different version that belongs to DQ3
It's the theme that plays in Alefgard, which is part of all 3 of the games in the Erdrick Trilogy. It is the map of the first game, a location that can be visited in the second, and the underworld (late game map) of the third.
That vastly different version was actually written for the original Dragon Quest and is the only overworld theme in the game. Both Dragon Quest 2 & 3 then used the themes for the land of Alefgard, where the original game entirely took place in. Curiously, while Dragon Quest 2 is chronologically set after the original, Dragon Quest 3 is a prequel to the original.
I've never played much/any Dragon Quest, since I grew up playing Mario RPGs and only discovered JRPGs through Final Fantasy in my college years. That changed somewhat when I got Dragon Quest Builders, and I'm exploring (at least the music of) Dragon Quest now. For some reason I had the notion that it wouldn't be as good as FF? But when I heard this in the 3rd chapter of DQB, I knew I had to look up other versions and possibly sheet music. I really like that major-to-minor shift at the beginning. But aside from a few tracks, I'm really liking DQB's "Survey of Dragon Quest Music."
Sugiyama was composing for anime, tv, and other mediums in the 70s, long before Dragon Quest as well. He even recycled some of his earlier themes for this series. Cyborg 009 is one example.
Okay so for some reason in dqb 2 this song is listed as never ending journey which is completely different dq song from this. Probably just a translation error but though I'd bring it up anyways.

Everyone says this game is super hard, but I didn’t think it was that bad. I actually really enjoyed it, the only part that gave me trouble was the final grind before Hargon’s castls
Which version did you play?
@@b_Wtv14 the Switch version. Yeah it’s easier than the original but I just wanted to have a good time and not get frustrated with the game
@@BetaXeeta ah ok, when people refer to its difficulty it’s usually referencing the original NES version
ah yes
the theme of Kol and Moonbrooke
4:23 super mario 3d world anyone?? About 30 seconds into switch scramble circus
I feel like I just heard this in Dragon Quest Builders on Switch. Did that game just straight-up use this arrangement?
I don't think it's the same arrangement, but yeah, basically every song in the game is from an older one.
This is 3 separate songs right?
Yes. Each a theme of the three party members. First is Hero's, second is Princessa's and last in Canrok's.

What is the last theme from ?
Belias It's still DQ2, it's the overworld music once you have companions.
Came here from Dragon Quest Builders 2
Same
I’m playing the switch version of 2 right now. Wow, it has aged like milk though, especially after finishing 11, but it’s alright. Very hard though.
It aged beautifully.
