My favorite will always be Dragon Quest VIII... That melody makes you see that you are immersed in an immense world, it makes you want to explore and discover every corner that is hidden in it. It's incredible how that melody transmits to me. However, the Hero's from Dragon Quest IV it transmits sadness to me, but when the group is complete and the melody changes, it does transmit a desire for revenge.
Those are my favourites too! The DQVIII theme nails that feeling of wonder better than any other, I agree. But yes, the dual hero themes of DQIV hit #1 overall for me, for how powerfully they set the narrative tone. One of my most treasured memories in all of gaming was when I first experienced that melody shift; the first theme of lonely aimlessness suddenly replaced with one of hope and purpose. Since the change occurs specifically when the hero fully unifies the cast of playable characters, what I feel most from it is the hero and allies’ newfound sense of empowerment as a collective. There’s also a kind of lofty, divine righteousness to it that I think elevates it and the story beyond one of revenge and ‘the personal’. I’ve often reflected on this theme as you can probably tell XD
I love how the series always pays homage to older themes, but it's more prominent with spin-offs like DQ monsters. They even give a new spin to villains like Psaro and Malroth.
I find 7’s Present overworld theme to be by far the best in the series. 2’s is also charming. I do find it disappointing that 11’s is basically just 3’s.

It took me years later to realize the importance of this series. It has grown on me. I started with 9 never finished but currently playing 1 and 8
