For real though, why is it that dragons are the only thing that is truly sad in the SCP world? I guess you could go all meta, since in modern literature, dragons are often used to represent wonder and amazement without knowing anything, and dragons are often killed to symbolically represent the "death" of all of that wonder and amazement once you become an adult. So maybe the writers are trying to symbolize that death of fantasy, being replaced with science and science fiction?
If you ever have to explain the difference between fantasy and sci-fi to someone, just show them this In fantasy, dragons live forever and men are in awe of them In sci-fi, men live forever and dragons have died out Edit: actually the more I think of this, it might show the difference between older Tolkien era fantasy versus modern Sanderson style fantasy
Sci-Fi and Fantasy are really just two sides of the same coin, or rather two ends of a spectrum, and often overlap. Remember that Science Fantasy is a thing too, the SCP-verse itself fits neatly into it.
"You don't believe in magic..?" "Not at all." "... I find that very sad." "Why's that?" "Because if you don't believe in Magic, then you'll never have any in your Life."

When a dragon dies so does the magic in the world and so dragon stories written for adults by adults deal with the death of magic and child like wonder.
they are fantasy, ancient, mystical, and legendary, suspense of belief, and as the world moves toward "maturity", reality, science, practicality the things that dragons symbolized are left behind, obsolete and unwanted, and are shadows of their former selves.
@@midend Honestly, I think you're wrong. The dragons aren't dead. They just aren't on Earth anymore. The more I think about it, the more I realise this us a very important article. May be reading too much into it but can't help but wonder.
This reminds me of a great quote from Babylon 5: "They are a mystery. And I am both terrified and reassured that there are still wonders out there. That we haven't yet explained everything."
This is truly a tale of magic, or rather, a loss of magic. In the beginning, when Lester first saw Thatnock, he was filled with magic and wonder, but over time, science and technology took over instead of that whimsey upon seeing a dragon.
If it helps, a decommissioned scp, which means it was deleted due to poor writing, is a not sad dragon. Its someones OC and their skeleton dragon who are strong enough to kill scp 682... thats practically it.
@@zionthedragon8866 I looked at one of the “decommissioned” SCPs, and said SCP is a powerful dragon and person. This SCP is no longer listed on the main lists though.
@@theteethcollector865 No, I had no idea what you were talking about. Also did this supposed scp (past tense) have a number, or is it unfortunate quncidence that you don't know/can't remember?
If I had a nickel for every SCP that involved a sad story about dragons that died out because of human advancements, I'd have two nickels. Which isn't a lot but it's weird that it happened twice, right?
Science doesn't remove mystery, for every new discovery there are always more and more and in reality we know very little of what there is to know. Hell if the multiverse theory is true then there is an infinite amount of worlds out there that have dragons on them. I try to remember that every ending is a new beginning and every beginning is the end for the previous story.
The dragon memetic is nearly culturally universal. It's a snake/lion/shark that flies. It's all the horrors that haunted prehistoric man with red tooth and claw. But we have slain the dragons and made boots and carpets and soup. And now, there is no beast to stalk the nights, only the night itself. And what is humanity against that? Clever monkeys staring into the yawning maw of existence. The dragons died, and we found real fear.
Yeah, judging from those two "Maybe the real dragon slayer is losing your imagination" is the go-to theme for sapient European fantasy dragon skips. TBF, I only know three, and *SCP-1154* (Conceptual Dragon) doesn't go for the heartstrings like that. If you widen the net a bit, there's *SCP-2454* (How To Train Your Axolotl), which is just adorable, and *SCP-1779* (Dime Consumers), which is kinda cool. So if you like dragons and reading the Wiki yourself, I'd say maybe give those a shot? There also seem to be quite a few mythological reptiles and dragon-adjacent ones, but I have only skimmed a few.
It is SCP entries like this that makes me wish that the dragons would have wiped out the SCP foundation and coexisted with humanity preserving wonder, peace, and mystic spiritualism.
There’s something even MORE evil about simply suffocating the personification of Awe, as if it were nothing more than a sack of unwanted kittens thrown in the river. Damn the SCP for pretending diplomacy, when what they really wanted was victory without the clash.
A world without wonder hope's and dreams sounds like a cold and empty place like the void of space or a heart without a warm embrace from time to time. Never stop loving the fantastic the mysterious the mythical the unexplained.
So dragons in the scp universe are creatures of that feed fantasy and belief in stories, miracles, and the unexplained. If there isn't any fantasy in the hearts of people they become normal.

Dragons are the epitome of our natural and childlike wonder. The amazing explanation as to why mountains shook, volcanoes burst and storms abate with no warning. Salvatore said it best. There has to be a little magic. Some wonder and awe that makes us aspire towards more in all things. Apathy has bled us of our fantasies.

SCP: where dragons will make you cry! Why must you hurt us this way? * cries in a corner *

If you ever have to explain the difference between fantasy and sci-fi to someone, just show them this
In fantasy, dragons live forever and men are in awe of them
In sci-fi, men live forever and dragons have died out
Edit: actually the more I think of this, it might show the difference between older Tolkien era fantasy versus modern Sanderson style fantasy
In fantasy, everything goes back to how it was. In sci-fi, things are never the same.

Sci-Fi and Fantasy are really just two sides of the same coin, or rather two ends of a spectrum, and often overlap. Remember that Science Fantasy is a thing too, the SCP-verse itself fits neatly into it.
"You don't believe in magic..?"
"Not at all."

Item #: SCP-3844
Object Class: Keter (pending review)
Special Containment Procedures: O5-2 has been assigned to oversee the investigation of SCP-3844 and the development of appropriate long-term containment procedures. Until this time, O5-2 will act as necessary to ensure the Foundation's objectives are met in regards to the anomaly.
Description: SCP-3844 is the collective designation for numerous, large, winged lizards located within the Himalayans, Rockies, Appalachians, Andes and Dolomites.
Uploader's Note: Dragons. There are still dragons in the mountains.
When imagination dies so does the part of of soul that makes us human. Sad but true

Why are most dragons stories sad 😭
When a dragon dies so does the magic in the world and so dragon stories written for adults by adults deal with the death of magic and child like wonder.
@@Jack-kn1mr damn, that hits home hard
they are fantasy, ancient, mystical, and legendary, suspense of belief, and as the world moves toward "maturity", reality, science, practicality the things that dragons symbolized are left behind, obsolete and unwanted, and are shadows of their former selves.
@@midend Honestly, I think you're wrong. The dragons aren't dead. They just aren't on Earth anymore. As much as science has defeated older fantasies here on Earth, it's allowed us to come up with even wilder fantasies out amongst the stars and stellar remnants.
Watch this video and then try to tell me that fantasy and whimsy aren't still very much alive:
ruclips.net/video/ThDYazipjSI/видео.html
Who knows if there's a Dragon's Egg out there right now, waiting to hatch.
Don't be sad, now dragons are just myth .. in the future they WILL be reality. Genetically engineered by some mad scientist who wants to add magic into the world.
Two questions:
1. Why are all the dragons so nice?
2. Why do all the nice dragons get the short end of the stick?
I couldn't bear to finish it.
When you live for as long as dragons do, you learn that being a raging thundercunt is incompatible with long life. So, they tend to be fairly reasonable creatures so as to die of old age and not murder. Usually.

Now I'm thinking of that Ted-ED video of a bunch of numbers trying to kill a dragon
I had a similar experience while becoming an electrician. I learned how shit works and alot of the magic in the world just... died...
Ignorance is bliss
Rest in peace Tharnock, we will never forget you 🥺😭
This is truly a tale of magic, or rather, a loss of magic. In the beginning, when Lester first saw Thatnock, he was filled with magic and wonder, but over time, science and technology took over instead of that whimsey upon seeing a dragon.

Will there every be a Dragon-Based SCP tale that doesn't end in tragedy and betrayal?!
If it helps, a decommissioned scp, which means it was deleted due to poor writing, is a not sad dragon. Its someones OC and their skeleton dragon who are strong enough to kill scp 682... thats practically it.

I found this article on the wiki a few days ago, but i didn't have the patience to read it fully. What a small world.
I needed my heart today, and whimsy alive tomorrow.
Keep this up and we'll have ALL those dragons slain! Keep up the good work, Foundation! *Salute*
Found the Dragonborn
Your videos keep me going on long night shifts.
Edit: why are all the dragon SCPs sad?
It is SCP entries like this that makes me wish that the dragons would have wiped out the SCP foundation and coexisted with humanity preserving wonder, peace, and mystic spiritualism.
watcha gunna do about 096 though?
Or the thousands of Keter SCPs?
I have a hunch that the dragons can take them all on.
But that's just a shojo anime with extra steps

"but really, we didn't deserve Tharnock."

The only reason I stay up on Sunday.
For the content we are blessed.
For the knowledge Tharnak is cursed.
The best way to put the whimsy back in humanity is through our children, for it is through their eyes that we will remember it... Poor Arnock 🥺😫
There’s something even MORE evil about simply suffocating the personification of Awe, as if it were nothing more than a sack of unwanted kittens thrown in the river. Damn the SCP for pretending diplomacy, when what they really wanted was victory without the clash.
I weep for Tharnok and our whimsy.
That last image you used perfectly encapsulates the awe and wonder a dragon could inspire.
It's a beautiful picture.
This made me sad. He just wanted to be a dragon not a cooped up pet.
A world without wonder hope's and dreams sounds like a cold and empty place like the void of space or a heart without a warm embrace from time to time. Never stop loving the fantastic the mysterious the mythical the unexplained.

I like the SCPs like this one, way to many of them are just something horrible for the sake of making something horrible. I think they are at their best when the writer is trying to convey a point.

The Exploring Series: * _narrates SCP-3844_ *
Me: * _Lie down, try not to cry, cry a lot_ *
I'd like to think the ending of the article had a slightly different explanation: Even if Lester couldn't bring himself to believe, perhaps he could bring the dragons back if he got these foundation to collectively believe they were out there. Especially if given a Keter classification, often lending an air of incomprehension to anomalies that the new dragons would need to survive.
