Chinese grammar 除了: besides and except

  • Translations in Chinese textbooks can be confusing, you can often see that the grammar structure 除了... 以外 chúle ... yǐwài can be translated as both besides and except. So, when does it mean besides and when except?

    For "nobody likes him except his mother" I think we could also say 除了他妈妈没有人喜欢他.
    In other words, besides 都, 没有 could also indicate "except for".
    For example: 除了这只狗我没有宠物 "except for this dog, I have no pets"
    I think that 不 could work the same way.
    For example: 除了足球我不喜欢运动 "except for soccer, I don't like sports"
