I'm not a native speaker but I lived in China for a few years and in my experience, most people don't use nihao very often. Only when trying to get someone's attention, like when calling a waiter. When greeting someone (at least in a more informal setting) most people that I met simply said 哈喽 (ha1lou2) i.e. hello. Also, baibai is more common than zaijian 😂

Thank you for your sharing! It is great! And there is a suggestion: the reason why Chinese say "Have u eaten" to great others is that food is of vital importance to the Chinese lifestyle. It links to the social activities, politics, philosophy and so on. If you are interested, here is a book called Food in China: A cultural and Historical Inquiry. There is a further explanation.

In our Filipino culture, we always ask if you have had your meal yet, if someone had just arrived in your place. But usually if it's a visitor we always give snacks and kindly force them to eat 😁
My partner is Chinese (mainland, Mandarin speaker), and I am German. Some of the similarities in phraseology are most interesting. "Have you eaten yet?" is a greeting used in both countries. In Germany, we have countless greetings, depending on familiarity, the occasion and the region; for example, coming from Niedersachsen, I usually greet friends with "Moin". Also, unless someone is close or related, one would never say "How are you?", because if this question is posed to someone who is not particularly close, it would be dismissed as insincere. Vielen dank for a very interesting video!
This is really helpful.. Easy to understand, though pronunciation is still hard for a beginner like me😊 I have to rewatch and pause then play multiple times. Thank you!

I am so happy that I found your channel. I know some "real Chinese" from my Chinese fiance but I am preparing to take the HSK tests in the future (plus he is planning to move back to China at one point) and it always feels weird that I have to learn and memorize things that are either not authentic, incorrect or old-fashioned. So I am always juggling between what I know to be authentic and what I need to know for academic reasons. I studied (and plant to continue studying) in the language teaching field so I know that there is a big difference between academic requirements and the everyday language. I always feel like revolutionizing language learning when I can call myself a professional in the future. 😂

I’m a native speaker and at least from my experience and where I’m from we do say 你好吗 to each other and typically is answered with 好 or 还可以。 In informal settings we use 好不好. We use some of the other ones as well but it’s not uncommon to get hit by a 你好吗 after a good morning.

Wow! Andy! I just discovered this video and your channel! I'm very certain my old, annoyed Chinese neighbors will be VERY relieved that I stopped trying to speak in 'textbook' whenever I saw them, but I'm afraid they are now all going to get fat from not having to run away from me every time they see me first! LOL! Seriously, thank you for this video. It's one thing to study for HSK, but living in the Fenway of Boston, MA with a HUGE HUGE student and immigrant/ABC population, it's very different than what's taught. This video broke a barrier for me (I hope) and shows me a path to study things a bit more naturally. Also, I like your use of parentheses and color-coding. That extra work on your part made a LOT more sense to me!

I'm a 1.5 generation Chinese-American and am fluent in Chinese, but I find it interesting to hear it explained, because when you've only learned through exposure, you aren't actually aware of the details of the language. You just know how to use it. Personally, when I greet someone I know in an informal setting, I usually just nod at them and say "eh" in a deliberate tone, and then if I want a longer conversation, I will follow up the "eh" with one of the other greetings mentioned. In my experience, confirming what you think the other person is going to do, and asking how they've been lately, are probably the more common ones. I'm not sure I qualify asking if someone has eaten as a "greeting." To me, asking whether you've eaten is more of a way of asking if I'm inconveniencing you. Like, if they haven't eaten, that's my sign to either keep the conversation short (so they can go eat) or to invite them to join us to eat (if it's convenient for everyone).
I'm from Singapore where Mandarin and Chinese dialects are commonly spoken everywhere. Mandarin was adopted as one of our official languages only after we became an independent nation in 1965. Before that most people spoke their native dialects depending which part of China their ancestors came from. It was common for the older generations to ask, as a greeting, "吃饱没?" Literally, have you eaten till full? I remember this used as a standard greeting in Hokkien (from Fujian province) and Cantonese (from Guangdong province). The Chinese here mostly came originally or descended from impoverished parts of China, where getting enough to eat was uncertain. Getting a good meal was a blessing. Hence the focus on getting a full meal. The immigrants typically were not well-educated people. Mandarin was taught in schools and promoted later through films and TV dramas. Today, it has changed, both in China and Singapore. And we have gone past the stage of basic survival for most people. So only elderly people who still speak dialects may continue to use this greeting. They are not really asking if you had enough to eat. The greeting just reflects the age-old preoccupation with hunger and poverty that seems to be stamped on to the Chinese psyche. I am the third generation born and bred here. I have never known intense poverty and hunger and I'm very grateful for it. So when I hear greetings like this, I am reminded what a struggle it was for my ancestors.
You taught me Mandarin better than my husband by the way 😂 he also Mandarin native, but when he taught me Mandarin in English, so hard for me to understand. 4:57 When asking "Have you eaten?" over the phone, it's a way of asking "Can you talk now?" The other person can imply the negative by saying "I'm eating now" or "I'm cooking now" or whatever phrase they can come up to say they are busy without actually saying "no" which comes across as too brusque.
5:01 ‘have you eaten?’ Or ‘kumain ka na ba?’ Can be used as a greeting to someone close or dear to you. When a spouse meets his/her other half after a few hours of not seeing each other, instead of saying ‘how are you’, they can say ‘Kumain ka na ba?’ as a gesture of love and caring for each other. This is a Filipino trait. 🇵🇭

ohh, now i understand why my Chinese friend always answered "so-so" to "how are you?" question so-so is an authentic way to answer it in Chinese context but it is not an authentic way to answer it in English context, i'm not a native English speaker so i didn't know about this either

Actually, as a native English speaker I think "so-so" is a fine way to reply to "how are you?" But be careful because sometimes people assume anything other than a response like "I'm doing great!" suggests not-so-good, so when someone says 'so-so' the other person often assumes that something is wrong.
Very helpful video, thank you! I have seen this video a year ago without understanding anything and now, after having done a Chinese course for almost two semesters, a know almost all of the signs. :) Feels so good. Cheers from Germany

So im half Chinese and half polish, my family speaks Chinese around the house (though I look really white lol) and we have always said Ni Hao. I was at China town in LA and was speaking to a lady who works at a store and I was speaking Chinese and a stranger came up to me (a white guy) and said Ni hao Ma and I looked at him like he grew a third head lol. I was super confused and the poor lady that was working at the store looked confused also lol. I'm sorry, this is quite random, but what does "ta bian qian shan wan shui, feng yu wu zu" means? It was written on the handmade muffler my crush gift me. At 04:14 reminds me of that I sometimes use "good afternoon" or "good evening" in formal written email / message trying to indicate that I am sorry if I bother you at non-working hours. Or trying to use the words of time to indicate that this case is important, I want you reply my email immediately after you saw it. But I am not sure whether I am the only one doing this. And I often use "good afternoon" or "good evening" to greet with my professors and bosses if we came across or had video meeting, not often with friends or family members.

Yes, you are right!
Yes, it is generally used to communicate with strangers in written language on the Internet.
Hello is used between friends. Nihao is used in more formal settings, eg speaking to a bank teller.
The 哈喽 thing is mainly used by younger people, people wishing they were younger than they are, friends, or people using it for your benefit.
i am a Singaporean Chinese who lived in Shanghai for a while, ni hao is used quite often in my experience
OMG you're the best!!! Wow I'm so amazed by your patience explaining yourself.

Thank you for your suggestion!

In our Filipino culture, we always ask if you have had your meal yet, if someone had just arrived in your place. But usually if it's a visitor we always give snacks and kindly force them to eat 😁
Thank you for sharing your knowledge👍
My grandma agree
We adopted lots of Chinese cultures. Especially in Mindanao.
It's really fantastic teaching. You are definitely the best teacher in the world.❤

Wow!

I have been learning chinese and i copied all sentenced in my own dialec to spell/read clearly. Thanks for the lesson
You taught me Mandarin better than my husband by the way 😂 he also Mandarin native, but when he taught me Mandarin in English, so hard for me to understand. 谢谢, Andy. Well, I'll stat writing the characters to remember then as well.
Good point
5:01 ‘have you eaten?’ Or ‘kumain ka na ba?’ Can be used as a greeting to someone close or dear to you. When a spouse meets his/her other half after a few hours of not seeing each other, instead of saying ‘how are you’, they can say ‘Kumain ka na ba?’ as a gesture of love and caring for each other. This is a Filipino trait. 🇵🇭

Actually, as a native English speaker I think "so-so" is a fine way to reply to "how are you?" But be careful because sometimes people assume anything other than a response like "I'm doing great!" suggests not-so-good, so when someone says 'so-so' the other person often assumes that something is wrong.
