  • Are you just starting to learn a new medium or craft? In this video I share the game-changing method I used-three different times-to "learn out loud," by building a website and teaching others. See how this can turbocharge your learning process while also creating a supportive community. The feedback you receive might give you ideas that you would never come up with by yourself.
For this video I took a walk down memory lane, all the way back to my first website in 2002. I built it to have an excuse to learn how to make animations with Flash. A year later, I built the Drawfluffy site to learn how to draw the mythical animals from the Harry Potter books. Then I learned how to build affiliate sites, which helped me escape my last job in 2006. Two years later, in 2008, I was back with another website, UltimatePaperMache.com
😄 Learning out loud - it works!
    Links mentioned:
The book "Show Your Work" : amzn.to/3vcIpxa
Miles Beckler's channel about affiliate marketing, among other things: www.youtube.com/@MilesB/videos
(You'll want to use your discretion when watching marketing videos - they tend to exaggerate, but Miles doesn't usually stretch it too far. 😄 )
SendOwl - the service that helps me distribute my downloadable patterns: www.sendowl.com?r=UPM
You can find patterns for the masks and sculptures behind me in the video here: www.UltimatePaperMache.com/pa...
My book, "Make Animal Sculptures with Paper Mache Clay": amzn.to/1nMUO3a
Some of the links are affiliate links - thanks for your support! 😄

I brought a domain name and I know how to build websites. I am ready to go, but that little voice inside my head is like, “who are you to be trying to teach. You don’t even know half of this stuff.” I saw this video the day before Christmas, and it is one of the best gifts I got. To me, this was a sign that I do have something to share. I may not be at the top, but I can help someone else up to where I am.
I have never made a comment on video before, but I had to say thank you for sharing. You shined a light on my doubts that helped them to vanish. Thanks and Merry Christmas to you.

I had never thought of that. The old saying "learn a thing by doing a thing" is something I have applied for myself, but this concept takes that point further. Thank you for your content and for learning through teaching.

Most interesting. Thanks for sharing your experience and encouraging us to teach.
I enjoy teaching what I love to do and it’s very rewarding. When I discovered RUclips, it was a new but fun learning experience while teaching others.
You have truly inspired so many, including me. Wishing you a very merry holiday season and a happy New Year. 🎄😍🎄

Brilliant Jonni. You are so good at breaking down thought processes for others. I totally agree with you regarding websites, I had one from the 'get go', over the years I've constantly tweaked it (probably needs this again) . . . not only is it great to keep everything central, but also it creates a 'brand' even if that's simply 'you'. People begin to recognise the style of what you do. It also rubber stamps your work and makes it less likely to be copied and plagiarised. Everything I share on social media has my email address superimposed on it, photos, videos etc. 'ideas' are incredibly important, and new ones, as we know, are rare, so you need to make sure that you always link what you do creatively back to your own website, it is your 'intellectual property, not just the images, but the ideas themselves. I also agree massively with you about 'learning through teaching' I had this early on with older students and then again with younger ones when that kicked off. Also, writing my book again made me reassess exactly how I myself had come up with ideas, and why I approached them in the way that I did. I still teach on a daily basis, all ages and abilities, and so through that process of teaching/learning I'm able to 'slide the learning' up and down a scale and immediately be able to find a suitable level, whether the participants are 4 or 104! This comes obviously from trial and error, but it also comes from teaching others your craft. You talk a lot of sense Jonni, keep doing what you're doing. x

Hi. I love your channel and was wondering if you could do a video on how to hang your work. I know how to hang on the wall but not sure how to add wire/hangers on the back of the actual paper mache so that it won’t tear or fall off the wall. I hope that makes sense 😂

If you mean for paper mache clay, then no - it won't work with most drywall joint compound brands. However, it does work with DAP brand joint compound.
