If you put a little baking soda down before you add the superglue, it'll create a bond stronger than the plastic itself. You may need to sand a little away, but it won't break.
I have to point out that I have actually tried this in the wild. As super glue was developed for the skin it needs a medium to adhere too. I have actually tried a few. Even j8ust gluing skin to skin.
For the stick not going back to the middle, it's probably the potentiometer that isn't balanced / centered from the factory. You can add one (or more in parallel) little SMD resistor between the outer leg and center leg to compensate for the natural drift. The replacement joysticks I bought are coming with 33kOhm 0402 resistors that are compensating for about 3% of drift each.
If someone would have asked 23 year old me what i thought 43 year old me would be doing quite happily on a Saturday night the answer probably wouldn’t have been “watching a dude on youtube with a self made soundtrack fix electronics” but that’s what I’m doing 😂 NICE 👌
I love how he stumbles through every repair, like he's not afraid to mess it up but somehow makes it through the repair for the most part. His confidence gave me my own confidence to actually buy some tools and try and repair my own broken electronics.
Exceptional rap today, well done. Every time I watch one of your videos it inspires me to take apart something of mine that's broken, of course I break it worse, then give up and buy another. It's a lovely cycle
You can use a shop towel( type that are used by mechanics) that works with glue as a type of fiberglass repair. Can be added to sides of the break to add strength.
i replaced the joy to on my ps4 controller and hade the left tilted shift on the pogram to. but i just lub it up a litle and now its prefect. thank you Steve for the great video and cya soon again =). Great job ones again.
Thanks Frederick! Glad that you could get yours fixed! I'm happy with how it's turned out, working perfectly, so I think it was worth swapping the whole stick over 👍
Good to see more fixes on the controllers you did there Steve 👍 i recently sent my PS5 Dual Sense Controller back to sony for fixing due to stick drift and was sent a brand new replacement back with the newer revision A -model 😊
I repaired my Xbox controller shoulder button by buying a replacement from eBay for £1.29 cheap as chips. Having previously superglued one I found the repair doesn't last. Love your videos 👍🏻
I'm near sighted and have the hand control of an orangutan, but I just love to watch you bring stuff back to life, that I would never be able to. Great job mate!
Nice! Classy jazz fusion rap, and elevator music interludes. I'm impressed lol 😆 why on earth do they make those damn controllers so complicated? Nice fix though 👌
I bought an Xbox one controller with the same shoulder button issue, also a broken tab. I glued it and lasted like 1 week. I bought a replacement part from AliExpress (1 dollar) and good as new.
I wish your channel was around when I could see properly enough to do these types of repairs as your channel is an amazing teaching aid. Ah well. Such is life. Great repairs, Steve.
@@the_sjdo he can use resistors to bring calibrate the pot i do controllers for a side hustle even the oem alps pots need calibration. i think he needs a 75k- 100k resistor to center it
@@the_sjdo drift mode pots are terrible they reduce the overall range as you are effectively putting another resistor in parallel and some games need the full range for running to work etc.
Epoxy glues are good for gluing stuff like that, I always use poxipol (not sure if its just a polish brand), but it works like a charm every time, and so far nothing broke again.
Agree completely. I even exclusively use a 2 component glue(araldite) for almost anything as this glue delivers some material and is slightly flexible if needed(change of ratio in the mix, less hardener). Nothing broke yet☺
Awesome. U should revisit these and put Hall effect sensor modules in. Just going through all my Xbox, PS and Switch controllers myself now. Also, the music reminded me of Gran Turismo 3 lol.
4:33 use a 2 part epoxy like araldite, I've used it on many plastic items, it as strong or stronger. but takes 24hr to cure. even on tiny uneven bits it is strong! I used some on a 3d printer tension pully just this week.
The audio on this vid is brilliant, I half expected Stevie Wayne from KAB radio (John Carpenter’s ‘The Fog’) to introduce these tracks… and possibly some scary warnings about the fog… hmnnn and it’s foggy here in the UK…
You could always use Tamiya Glue for gluing together plastic pieces. It is used in miniatures, and it melts the plastic and binds it together. It's pretty good, from what I've heard.
For glueing plastics, if they're made of ABS or PVC, I usually use a bit of MEK (methylethylketone) on a small brush. The MEK acts as a plasticizer and partly dissolves the plastic, then creating a chemical weld. Stronger and lasts forever, but it only works on certain plastics.
Or testor's model glue. I found the pens to be pretty useful for that type of application. And it's more of a liquid which seems to help the plastic dissolve better than the glue in the tube does.
The orange and blue wipers look different when you look at them closely. Probably why it didn't work by just swapping the potentiometer with the orange one. I just bought a set of PS5 and PS4 potentiometers online and swap them when needed. I think the PS5 / PS4 ones have differences too. You can also add something called a drift fix board to the back of the analogue stick which has two small dials to remove any slight drift
drift fix boards are a terrible idea as they reduce the range of motion which is important for some games. Just replace pots if theyre worn as long as the joystick mechanism isnt physically worn or damaged.
Right bumper probably killed by AC Valhalla. Mine was. Thought of gluing it back but I think would just break again. Ordered a replacement piece off aliexpress.
Look for the original ALPS joysticks (for both controllers). Cheapest ones have different resistance in his potenciometers and can burn another component.
The only reason i put up with your signing...is cause I know YOU love doing it. keep doing what you love and you put a skip time for those who don't appreciate what YOU LOVE TO DO :) keep it up...DON'T STOP SINGING :)
5:14 in my experience, the best glue to use on these plastics is that one used for PVC pipes, folks from plastic scale modeling uses this glue too, but you need to let it cure overnight
For stick drift, consider investing in some DeoxIT FaderLube (F-Series). It comes as an aerosol or as a liquid in a needle-tipped bottle. It's specifically made for cleaning and protecting potentiometers that have plastic components. It will clean contact surfaces and provide a thin, lubricating layer that reduces wear on sliding components, especially metal-on-plastic. In my experience, it's worked to fix most stick drift, especially on JoyCons, the aerosol has a straw that can fit under the little rubber boot on the thumbstick and it does a good job of blasting out any grime. I just give it a spray and move the stick around to work it in. For regular sticks, I've found that you don't even need to pry back the potentiometer housing, the aerosol does a good job of penetrating from the crack where the potentiometer connects to the stick and in the little hole on the side. DeoxIT D-series is a general purpose contact cleaner that's great as well. It's made to clean pretty much everything and it's also safe for potentiometers, but I've found that the F-series is best for controllers and faders in pro audio gear since it's made specifically for those applications. Either way, you can't lose. It's about $20 (USD), but I've used the same can for about 5 years now and fixed dozens of controllers and used it to clean a bunch of DJ equipment. If I'm taking apart a controller to clean or fix it, I will always spray the potentiometers to clean and protect them, even if there's no drift.
Those orange and blue colored potentiometers are much different values, not interchangeable here (or anywhere... really... I think) As far as that one new stick not quite being 100% flush... there are two tricks to that. Make sure that thumbstick module is seated perfectly flush against the board. If not, when the thumbstick cap seats back down on, it will either not allow the stick to sit centered (although it probably will allow that) but the other issue is it will goof with range of motion of the stick. You'll be able to go way further down, than up (or whatever... depending on the angle of the tilt of the module relative to the controller board. The other trick is there are little PCB's you can buy for about $1 each that allow you to recalibrate existing thumbsticks. I also apply them to brand new thumbsticks (for this reason) so that you can dial them in perfect dead center. If and when the sticks drift again, it's as easy this time as simply calibrating it back in.
For that trigger button / post you could have used super glue with a bit of baking soda (a drop or two around the post and sprinkle with baking soda). That will make it really strong (by providing bigger contact area and support for the post)
That's the method I would use! I used it to repair a 1mm thick piece of plastic on my bathroom extraction fan, the piece of plastic in question opens and closes the shutter, and it's still working a year later, probably stronger after the fix. I've actually seen someone on youtube mix in lead shavings from a pencil with the Baking Soda it which makes it even stronger!
Plastic cement would probably work better than super glue, as Plastic cement melts the plastic slightly and makes a stronger bond.Used a lot in miniature building.
I would suggest to use so called "plastic glue" for such type of broken plastic repairs. It can be purchased in any scale model oriented shop. And works well with any ABS type of plastic, in a way of melting both pieces together (usually thise glues made of acetone plus few extra ingridients) and providing strong bond after few hours
6:40. Xbox analog sticks go all the way no matter if you fix it or not with the faceplate off (because of how much more space it has.) You should've tested it with the faceplate on just to make sure
I do not recommend using IPA for cleaning encoders and pots... It will eventually scratch the surfaces on the contact area. Please get some cleaner/lube, will work best for switches, pots, and sliders, and will increase the longevity many times over. Provided they are not worn down like in your situation

Love the BG music on this. Like mid 70s pre-Jaco Weather Report.
