    I always loved the “real” feeling transportation methods (and especially loved the ones that introduced risk!)
    For all the issues of Green Run, I like that the zombies chased and attacked the bus. I love that the tank from Origins also needed to be defended.
    I kinda wish Shadows had a way for zombies to pursue the railcar

    To go a bit off-topic; Dark Souls 1 has this amazing trait that everything is connected in ways you had no idea of/didn't expect. You would suddenly wind back up to a shortcut/earlier location having had no idea that these two locations were so close to eachother.
    There are some examples of elevators or stairs that do kind of cheese this, but it never felt like just Portals reaching for different branches. Something I feel Dark Souls 2 and 3 rely a bit more on; Fast-Travelling from and to the center point.
    There is something beautiful about these connections, they are an award of themselves. SoE's tram system (as little as I use it) makes each district at least feel connected in some way. And that's satisfying of itself.

    I was just talking about this with my friends the other day! Comparing maps like Shangri-la and Die Rise makes you really feel the impact of travel. Being able to choose to use the fast travel as opposed to being forced to use it really makes or breaks it. You Can use the Minecart, you Must use the elevators. You did a great job covering all the neat little aspects. That Secret Passage idea for Dead of the Night is something I'd have loved to see!

    This is a topic very near and dear to my heart. I'm a firm believer of unique forms of transport in zombies, which is why I think Shangri-La has one of the best maps layouts (with the only thing stopping it from being a 10/10 for me is the lack of purchasable trap and awful PaP system). The fact that the two paths from spawn reconnect to one another not only at power but through the Mine Cart and Water Slide are utterly fantastic.
    Love this series, been on a binge. Keen to see more!

    Hey Reed hope you’re well and staying safe. I recently got back into playing Portal 2 and came across a very interesting concept which I think could be adopted into COD Zombies to some degree. What I am talking about is Non-Euclidean level design. The basic idea for implementation would be the use of ‘world portals’ to create ‘impossible space’ within the map. I feel this could have the potential to really revolutionise the maps we play zombies on. For example, you could have a space which would go on forever if you walked straight forwards or a hallway that simply shouldn’t fit in the geometry of the map yet it’s there. There are many different ways this could be used in zombies and I feel this idea could really suit the vibe associated with a zombie slaying atmosphere. I’d love to know what you think about stuff like this! And anyone else reading this what do you think?

    Transportation has definitely evolved over the years. Take a look at Gorod Krovi. You ride the dragon from each platform (plus obtain the gauntlet) and are then rewarded a faster system to get to pack-a-punch in the form of the wings but the experience isn't taken away as the wings are completely optional and not forced on a player. Loved this video Reed, keep it up.

    In all honesty if the bus worked like the tram on SOE it would've been great. Look: you summon the bus by activating a bench or bus sign, you pay a fee to go to town, barn, utility building (like 300 or so)

  • @dillybar8546
    @dillybar8546 4 года назад

    Also, I think what makes transportation stand out more (for me) is if there’s a reward. In Ascension, you HAVE to use the lander to get pack a punch. In Shadows, you have to use the train for the sword and the Easter egg. But with the Origins tank, for example, it’s only useful for the lightning staff, otherwise I never touch it there’s no point too. Don’t get me wrong, cool transportation methods are always appreciated, but I feel like there’s more transportation methods that are just there to add aesthetic than to actually be useful and rewarding

    Finally someone mentions it. Transportation is important to a map espec the flow. Even considered the best, origins and mob had terrible transportation. It feels it makes stamina a must & mob didn't even have it. We don't mind runnin a bit but not from one side to the other or gettin to PP. Hope treyarch sees this, fast travel do it right god dammit lol 💯

    I wish we had more things like the tranzit bus. It was not perfect but one of the funniest features we ever had in zombies and probably the only reason why I like tranzit.
    Plus it’s the only transportation system in zombies we can upgrade (by adding parts) if I remember right.
    Would be fun to have more little Easter eggs to upgrade transportation systems and unlock new areas to the map (bus route b)

  • @Stanley557
    @Stanley557 4 года назад

    I feel like this video misses one key argument that transportation serves in later entries and that is flow. One of the best features about the Chaos fast travels is how quickly I can get from point A to point B. I've had more fun and better revives because of my map knowledge and I'm rewarded with a quicker way to get around. Fast travels use to be about their looks rather than their substance because you usually don't need them. The Lunar landers on Ascension are usually used for pack a punch and then left to rot by PHD until they are needed as a get out of jail free card. In Dead of the Night the fast travels serve an integral purpose to get you back from the map's three corners and back into the middle in a split second, cutting out all the time needed to walk back. In Voyage fast travels can be used to traverse the map in a quick way to save teammates or access farther locations quicker. Some of the best fast travels are from the mid deck to engine room, turbine room to grand stair case, cargo to engine, and poop deck to spawn. In Der Eisendrache the fast travels are as the name says: fast. There isn't any waiting and you can get to your destination when you need to. It helps to close the gap by the Rocket pad and the main castle. In Gorod Krovi, the dragon wings are a perfect upgrade system to the dragon ride, you can not only teleport for free but in an instant and access the farthest part of the map in a mere second and all without a flashy cutscene that wears off and becomes boring after the third year in a row of seeing it. I feel Reed you need to take more into account game design, you clearly understand what makes Five's teleporters hit or miss but I think you fail to understand why fast travels are the way they are in the Chaos story line. If I had to ride Pegasus every single time I wanted to go between worlds the map's flow would be destroyed. These larger maps need QUICKER ways to get around, not FLASHIER. I've loved this series for years but the quicker fast travels in the newer games make me realize how useless the old ones were. Clearly Jason has a different idea of how to use fast travels and transportation. Jimmy wanted you to EXPERIENCE whereas Jason wants to PLAY. Two completely different ideologies to keep the player in the game. The best example you glanced over was Shadows of Evil. Shadows of Evil's portals and map design are perfect. Each area of the map is accessible through two way portals and the middle has an easy path to the underground which leads you to the three portals allowing you to traverse such a large map in mere seconds and without any hassle. I can't remember how many times a teammate has died because I was waiting for the transportation animation to finish. You may not even see this or read this far but I hope my perspective can bring some more discussion to the video.

    • @Radaustin27
      @Radaustin27  4 года назад

      I never said the portals hurt the flow. That's why I dove into all the other issues I have with them. It isn't about flashiness it is like you described in GK. It has nothing to do with me "not understanding", what you hitting on is a preference in your argument. I stay away from words like "perfect" in any analysis because someone else will tear down your ideas in zombies. Nothing is perfect in the series. All zombies is opinion-based. The portals keep you in the flow of action but never immerse me, which hurt my gameplay loop for chaos. I like short cuts like in Zet, they are quick and make sense. I agree we don't need to sit through a cut scene, again that wasn't my argument presented in the video. Your argument also ignores what I pointed out as an excellent system in DE a well so I am confused why you brought that up, as I agree with you. I appreciate the comment, we all see things from different perspectives.

    Personally, I really like the concept of the bus in Tranzit. Just wish it could be made to go faster or even directed to pick up/drop off a bit more how the player wanted. I dunno, maybe if there was a map on the bus that you could shoot locations to travel to that cost like 50 points or something and it speeds to that specific locale, otherwise it just takes you around normally for free. I never hated the bus myself, but understood everyone's complaints with it.

    A general rule that can be applied to transportation is that "If done right, a player won't really notice it. However, if done wrong, it can ruin a map." Of course there are exceptions to this rule if the forms of transportation are memorable, such as Lunar Landers, the water slide and minecart, the Landing Pads, the Dragons, the ziplines and flingers, etc.
    *EDIT:* I will concede that DOTN's transportation isn't memorable at all, but I do believe it gets the job done.

    Origins could have benefited from the mud being in key locations instead of constantly being in the path put a choke point near an objective or in an objective like a room with a soul box off to the side where you have to train zombies to add difficulty to the challange but you won't be hindered in normal gameplay unless you want to complete the challenge or there is a box spawn/wall buy you want from that room

    One interesting topic to dive into could be the evolution of wall weapons and if they are too strong or fine. BO1 wall weapons sucked, BO2 had the SVU and AN94, then eventually we got the KRM and ICR and the Mog 12 and the trench gun looking shotgun, with the later guns being a lot stronger. Is this ok to have, or should box weapons have more importance placed on them? Idk the answer, it could be a fun topic. The one time I went to round 50 on IX I used the mog and the other shotgun because they did great, I never even worried about the box weapons. On BO2, I recently went to round 50 on Die Rise and used the SVU mostly, with the mark 2, didn’t even have to use the Sliquifier.

    Great Vid and analysis but I disagree with this Vid. Unless the maps spacing is really bad on purpose like a custom map. I don't agree with those whole notion of wasted space. I firmly believe and wanted maps that fulfill what Tranzit wanted to be. Jimmy Z said it best he wanted to flip the model so your out in the open and you have places to explore. I don't think every map shouldve been like that but taking bo4 for example Aether shouldve been the expansive maps and Chaos shouldve been how they were.

    11:55 these two particular maps of tranzit and die rise share more than just purposely left in transportation flaws
    in fact especially tranzit is flawed in every possible way to make the map more tedious to the player
    no surprise after the best selling dlc at the time was black ops resurrection map pack, the first zombies only map pack
    its really apparent to me, that theres a conspiracy to milk dlc by making the starting map bad hell even with nuketown with its lack of an actual wonder weapon and its flawed perk system,
    The thing is JZs map team was a great map making team, they made all their bo2 maps so unique but everything on purpose. On Buried it was made so that you couldn't train, and you had to camp (doesn't work for high rounds) The wonder weapon was made to camp, there are dozens of spots to camp in that map and literally no spots to train without the use of the paralizer to fly, This was the complete opposite in all the previous JZ maps of which forced you to train, training of which those maps had to teach you, and for a map like buried to be able to strip you of your most reliable component - mobility
    then its no surprise that we were stripped from better map potentials (until mob which was led by JB whom also led creating waw der riese, origins and all of bo3/4)
    all for money, I mean compared to the shit that Sledgehammer did with their DLC weapon Matchmaking this isnt a surprise
