Is it an underwound Monday morning hangover PAF or was it a left the machine winding on an extended lunch on Friday fire breather or is the magic really in the years of gunk and decay and magnets weakening over time ? It’s making more sense why Gibson is suing Dimarzio they want to be the only one in the PAF game and charge 1000 dollars for a burst bucker with a mag swap and a fancy box . There’s used 59s and PAF pros everywhere for 50 bucks that I guarantee will get you there without missing a house payment.

I wasn't impressed with any of them compared to my 2018 USA standard 60s L.P. which cost 2500 at the time.

      No. Gibson started machine winding pickups in 1950. Well before the first humbucker. They had mechanical wind counters which weren't particularly accurate.
      They did wind multiple bobbins at one time though and those would all have the same number of winds, being done at the same time. But I don't believe they actually matched them in the same pickup.

Tho thinking about mustaine V and paintjob QC flaws, it's unnaceptable at 2800€ but is it more acceptable at 1400€, especially compared to even some epiphones with better finishes for less than that like the prophecy V, 700€) ? moreover, is the 5000€ LP standard worth it even at 2500€ with outdated features and überfragile headstock ?

    Absolutely spot on. I have to confess I own three Gibson guitars all or which I readily acknowledge that I bought them for the name on the headstock, although they are pretty good guitars. Recently I bought an Epiphone ES 339 for £340 (it was pre owned but immaculate, a new one would cost around £460), an original Gibson ES 339 will knock you back around £2,500. Epiphone is of course owned by Gibson and is therefore allowed to make licenced copies of Gibson originals. I spent an hour trying out the guitar in my local guitar shop and was blown away by the sound, feel, looks and quality of the instrument. When I first took it along to my local buskers venue one or two people were at first unimpressed, pointing out that it was 'just an Epiphone'. They've all changed their minds as they all tell me that the guitar sounds really good. So in conclusion, I have a guitar which I've fallen head over heels in love with, which cost me a fraction of the price of a Gibson original and which my audience tells me sounds great. A lesson in point, you don't have to pay through the nose for an instrument that looks, plays and sounds great. Will Gibson ever change? I doubt it very much.

    What about the fact the the actual manufacturing machinery of the original PAFs is currently in use by other pickup manufacturers? The “engagement ring” case is cute and all, but the chance that these will sound better than a set of Duncans or Lollars is .00001. If you want to spend crazy money on a set of PAFs, then you could just pay up for a set of Throbaks. They cost an arm and a leg but there are reasons why and if you watch their videos you’ll understand. If that’s your thing, then that’s the way to go. Giving this money to Gibson is like giving more toys to a spoiled kid. Always works out well….

I estimate Gibson cleared $850k, kudos to them! Regarding buying these PUs, the purist won't want to 'butcher' their Gibson to install these, as a collector you want to keep the PUs pure and uninstalled, as a consumer there are so many better options for PUs out there. I love Gibson's, especially LP Custom Shops, but IMO these 'cash grab' attempts further tarnish the company. Winding something to a different spec should NOT change the price, unless you somehow need to source some kind of holy Tibetan silver alloy for the wires. Otherwise it's just a combination of bits and bobs that you already have in your parts bin, put together in a particular way which is guaranteed to be _very_ similar to your existing pickups, maybe with less wire on the coil (which should make it marginally cheaper instead).

So it's maybe not just a Gibson thing. The 1000 pieces stock is already sold out btw. So if they'd been really clever they'd have sold 2000 pairs, or 5000. 😅

    Along with all the thoughts in this video, I have another problem with this sort of pricing on Gibson limited edition pickups. Just like iPhone pushing its flagship phone to 1000+ dollars gave a green light to other manufacturers to follow suit, this move by Gibson will do the same to boutique pickup makers. Soon you'll find 6-7-800 dollar Lollars!

    They are just matching the price point of the Seymore Duncan Zephyr Silver set, which comes in at $959 at Sweetwater. $500 a pickup is very high, but they aren't the first and Gibson's value is in their tradition, which manifest as very high-end (or positioned as high-end in terms of price point) vintage reissue product. Their business model is following other brands rooted in tradition, think Levi's, Coca-Cola, Rolex, etc.. where the growth doesn't come so much from innovation, but acquisitions and lifestyle marketing for the traditional product... Gibson knows the people who actually buy their brand aren't the same folks on-line complaining about their pricing. They do market research and price things at the max they can and still manage to get reasonable sells. That's the nature of free markets. If priced too high, it will fail. But don't assume they won't get purchases at the $1k asking price. This is an experiment for them. Keep in mind the USA made Greeny bucker set only sells for $299. ($150 pickup), which is very much in-line with other brand pickup markers, so Gibson seems to think they have something really special with this reissue set.

    • @sixstringtv1
      @sixstringtv1  5 месяцев назад

      The Zephyrs are made of silver and made as an experiment to see how high-end you can make a pickup. The materials in these are worth like $12

    • @rmzzz76
      @rmzzz76 5 месяцев назад +2

      @@sixstringtv1Still though, an experiment. An experiment to see how much the Gibson brand is to those with deep pockets who buy into the fairy dust magic. Keep in mind this is the same company who has a special "lab" devoted to beating the hell out of new guitars to make them look old so they can sell them for crazy prices.... It's insane to me... Maybe Gibson will do a demo comparing these to a real 59 set, of course they would sound very close because there's nothing special about the originals you can't get from any well built 59 PAF recreation. But this same crazy gap between affordable quality and over priced quality exist throughout the gear industry. We live in a time when modern Epiphone's and Squires are so good, no one needs a USA built instrument. But people will gladly pay $4000 instead of $800... So my opinions a bit different. I see the Gibson 59 limited set and I laugh, because this is a product the gear snobs deserve to exist.... Meanwhile the best guitarist on the planet made his name with an all stock $800 Yamaha RevStar.

    I personally will not be buying these - but I’ve seen stuff like this enough times to know what they’re doing. It’s essentially the “it’s cheaper than an original while being as good as the original” marketing (with some actual engineering behind it). This is for the collector’s who can’t afford an original - like kit cars of 1960’s race cars. And Gibson a long time ago became a brand/instrument geared towards this market (reissues…reissues galore). Fender made the marketing decision to be more focused on younger/new musicians…Gibson made the marketing choice to focus on the “collector” demographic. It just is what it is - besides they’ll probably go bankrupt again soon because there a ticking clock on the “collector” demographic.
