I'm really confused about whether or not you guys missed the point of this episode. Like, the social media stuff is NOT the point. The racism is the point. You mentioned the racism a few times but you didn't seem to understand why that resulted in the ending here. There's nothing the Doctor could have done to stop those people from getting on the boat at the end and sailing off to their deaths because they were too ignorant in their bubble of bigotry and prejudice to ever let him save them. That's why the Doctor laughs and screams. That's why he doesn't bother trying to answer any of his other questions about what happened. Because none of that would help him overcome the racism of the Finetimers. There's nothing he can do except just leave and move on.
When you rewatch the episode, pay attention to all the microagressions that happen towards the Doctor, especially in comparison to how Ruby is treated. I didn't realise the racism aspect until the ending, but when the racism was made clear it made me reflect on all the things that happened in the episode to see how the racism was clearly there the whole time. It seems like you guys didn't have that moment of reflection.

after spending today thinking about it, i have to admit this was probably my favourite episode of rtd2 so far. lots of great comedy mixed with some genuinely quite tense scenes that all came to a head in an insane gut-punch plot twist that put the entire episode in a completely new light. i quite liked boom and thought 73 yards was alright, but this was probably the first truly satisfying episode for me.

So far my favourite episode this season.

As someone who actually really enjoyed it I think it is one of those episodes that you need to sit down and watch with a bit more of a “this is a weird, fun one off short story that might get revisited later.” mindset.
yes I agree the Susan twist stuff already is getting boring with literally every episode being a cameo and nothing else and the episode did kinda end a little too soon but I genuinely think the plot and messages were really good. it definitely plays the “tech is bad and rich people are stupid” card but it does it in a way that makes you start to ask questions like “why are they like this to begin with?” is there something more sinister going on on the home-world that makes them send their children into this strange “perfect” society. only for you to realise they’re just all privileged selfish rich kids whove been sent there to live an easy life and their minds have been destroyed by the fact that they have been living in a “bubble” where everything is running on dopamine, vanity and likability. And Despite the doctor and ruby genuinely wanting to help, they would much rather go back to their ways and get away from the horrors and the problems that they have experienced than actually learn from it and grow. I think there’s also this added element of Lindy being related to “Mother” which perhaps is teasing the idea of her return later. and the Race moment at the end was just the penny drop that was so brilliantly acted out by Ncuti. Sometimes the doctor despite all his efforts just has to recognise the situation, sit back and let fate decide their destinies instead of getting involved. it’s like the Waters of mars ending but done with flipped mindsets. Unlike within the waters of mars, the doctor actually wants to save them out of genuine kindness despite everything. He’s not showing off or playing god, he just wants to be “the doctor” but in the end this colony just are too up their own ass to accept help and ultimately the outcome once again ends in tragedy where the doctor can’t do anything about it. And it’s possible that because he did intervene, he actually stopped some sort of natural selection process where the slugs were meant to kill everyone that could now have unforeseen consequences later on. Who knows... just a theory. But yeah I suspect this story will come to bite him in the arse sometime in the future because it ended really ominously and this could be a great set up to a more fleshed out plotline with the survivors becoming a bit more of a problem later on.

My biggest issue with this episode is one that ive had for a lot of RTD 2 episodes, theyre way too short. I think had this episode had the time to establish the dots as an AI gone rogue and also the weight of the Homeworld's genocide it may have been an all time great but with how it was presented, 7/10.

Anyone who dislikes it is wrong, end of discussion.
“An episode not really about this?” - Lindy is racist the whole way through. It is heavily signposted.
And we DO get an answer to the slugs. They’re made by the Dot to kill people: the Doctor even says they’re made, not natural.

I’m interested in some of the ideas touched on in this episode, but the execution (to me) just felt cheap in many ways. I never spent this much time of an episode just waiting for it to be over.

Long time listener, first time commenter from the US. I went into this episode expecting to not like it but it kept me engaged well enough to where I was more and more curious about Finetime and their society. The ending really saved it for me, personally. I expected Ncuti's Doctor to encounter racism in a historical episode but having the reveal be that the futuristic Finetime is a racist society at the end serves as a great shock to the audience and the Doctor. The Doctor has been a white person for 14 regenerations. If Tennant or Capaldi had saved them, they would'e hopped in the TARDIS no problem, but the Doctor is now a black man which complicates his relationship with the human race since racism isn't confined to the past, it's in the present, and likely the future. It's an effective trajedy. The Doctor respects their free will and lets them make their own decisions, but is heartbroken to see/experience their prejudice.

  • @Qaellow

73 yards is a Doctor lite episode following the protagonist.
Dot & Bubble is a Doctor lite episode following the antagonist.
I'm on the fence whether this episode worked or not. It was intentionally frustrating, and tripling down on the antagonist's unlikability by what she does to Ricky and the Doctor at the end there. And the commentary of social media making people incompetent dialled to eleven. It's going to put off younger viewers, and might be too silly for older viewers.
I much prefer RTD's take on racism and reaction by the Doctor with "I don't care I want to save you, please let me save you" than Chibnall's in-your-face racism (Ryan punched in the face) and the Doctor lecturing about it.

Great to hear another episode from you guys. Initially I dd agree with you, but I think going back over the episode, there's more to it and it's more complex than you think. It's probably worth you rewatching it to see if you see anything else on second watch. I do agree with some of your points, namely about the crab monsters and how they're not really very interesting monsters. But I think you could reconsider and give the episode another chance.

  • @csmadisun
    @csmadisun Месяц назад +1

The whole episode is about how the inhabitants of FineTime are spoilt rich kids who are horrible and selfish little a-holes (as well as racist - notice how Ncuti is the only black person in the entire episode?). That's why the AI governing everything went rogue and created the slugs - because having dot-and-bubbled them for however long, it wanted them to die as much as WE did (and the slugs being made by the AI was mentioned briefly by the Doctor as an explanation as to why they were killing people alphabetically. As you say, this episode is VERY exposition-heavy).
It's also why Ricky September dying is such a gut-punch - he was the only one who actually seemed like a decent human being. You can tell he'd have gone with the Doctor in a heartbeat, but instead he gets betrayed and killed by the supposed hero. Lindy was an awful person at the start of the episode, and she ended the episode as an awful person... and if there's any justice, she'll very quickly die as an awful person, along with all the others.
I'm ultimately not a huge fan of this episode, though I didn't hate it the way you guys did. Definitely one of the weaker episodes of the season.

    Season 1: the unquiet dead
    Season 2: love & monsters
    Season 3: Shakespeare code
Season 4: unicorn & the wasp
Season 5: victory of the daleks
Season 6: curse of the black spot

    Season 9: sleep no more

    Season 11: kerblam!
    Season 12: orphan 55
    Season 13: halloween apocalypse
    Season 14: dot & bubble

This was a true science fiction like Brave New World. The concept of studying racism in a future society is right out of the Daleks. The fact that they aren't saved because of their own pride is simply a brilliant twist on the traditional the Doctor saves the day cliche. This is the third stunner of a story and it has a dark end to it. Russell Davies says he's proud of this one and he has every right to be. By the way need to correct you on something. Davies and Moffat fleshed out the original idea over supper back when Matt Smith was Doctor. That means it could have formed part of the Doctor Who series when Moffat was still showrunner. Fancy that.

Couple of things spell out the racism theme, though I also missed them my first time round in favour of the whole spoilt-rich-bitch angle!
      - Lindy completely blanked the Doctor at first while she listened to Ruby (though that's easy to miss because of their VERY different approaches when talking to Lindy)
      - Ncuti's literally the only black person in the entire episode. Every inhabitant of FineTown is white, which is... telling (if, again, easy to miss if you're not looking for it)
      - The survivors warn Lindy of being "infected" by Ncuti (which is actually a historical notion - the idea of catching something from Black people/slaves) and she flat-out treats him like crap at the end despite him bending over backwards to help her.

At first I didn't like this episode, but after sitting with it its got some great commentary on racism that's very subtle. Once you watch that end scene the whole episode changes into something far darker and you start to think back to so many scenes such as when she blocks the doctor, when she calls the police and ask if anyone can help her and many more lines of dialog thought-out that if you blink and you miss it that shows the true nature of these people. And after all that the Doctor pleads to save them because that's what he does.

Two races at war who have almost annihilated each other based primarily on appearance. Both races have similar facial features...Black on one side White on the other. When asked why they are at war? The reply is that the opposition are "Black on their right sides, we are Black on the left side". The futility of racism explained in one sentence, with no preaching.

I'm so sad that you guys didn't like this episode 🥲 I loved it so much, right up there with WBY and 73 Yards, especially because the whole episode built up to the reveal it was a white supremacist community in really clever ways without giving it away. I think The Doctor's reaction at the end was 100% in character too because he didn't care that they were a bunch of racists, he wanted to save them anyway - that's The Doctor! He just wants to save people, and it was tragic because their hatred of Black people doomed them all to death and there was nothing he could do about it

Thank you for your honesty, it gets a bit tiring watching Doctor Who reviews where people are overly positive and refuse to acknowledge the bad parts of an episode , I'd like more reviews where people are more balanced being able to be positive but not being afraid to be critical as well it feels dishonest when people only see either all good or all bad like they're just feeding the rage of fans so those fans will watch and like their videos that are just telling them what they want to hear, or they're to scared to say anything critical because they'll get in trouble with there paymasters like Who culture, I stopped watching Tharries because he's overly positive about some shit episodes and then you see him in photographs with David Tennant and Russel T Davies at events and I can't trust his reviews are honest because I don't know what his real motivations are when he's making them. Again thank you for your honesty it was refreshing and I'm looking forward to your next review.😁👍 That ending was good though, maybe Ncuti can be a good Doctor Who after all?
