Why your INSTAGRAM Photos Look awful (and how to make them SHARP & CRISPY!)

You know one of the most asked questions I get from all of you is: “how do you have such sharp images on Instagram?” And “what are your IG Reels, TikTok and RUclips Shorts export settings?”. To be honest, there is no real secret, but I thought I would make a quick video going over my export settings and workflow that I follow to avoid image and video compression just in case there is something different that you spot and can try out. I then cover the export settings I use in Adobe Premiere Pro for my TikToks, RUclips Shorts and Instagram Reel vertical videos. Also, I missed one critical point, you need to make sure that your photos and videos are in focus when you capture them - not to worry I've got other videos to help you out with that - I got you!

You are money, baby!
We want a home studio tour, including drums!
Just like Snapchat, i think Instagram uploads are worse quality on android😤
Great tips
can u do another "editing our photos" !!!!!!!
Quick tip: IG SETTINGS -> Under “data usage” there is a setting to upload content in higher quality and it’s off by default
This blew my mind. Thank you.
That’s not only for video?
I don't see that.
@@trillstreetz20011 that's what I see too.

it would be cool to see a tutorial on how to make crappy footage into a b roll sequence! i find myself editing my old footage and be like wtf was i on when i filmed this, and trying to make something cool out of it
Yes, please :D
YES please
Your tutorials are honestly what pulled me into your channel years ago, just the overall good feeling of all your videos made me stay. Such a huge inspiration, youre the reason i bought my first beginners camera.
Yes please, more tutorials. 😎👍
Yeah
Photoshop
Lightroom
Davinci resolve
Photography
Videography
Cameras and lenses
EVERYTHING
Will always smash the like on a Pete vid, but I'm definitely down for more tutorials! Your old ones are exactly what inspired me to get out and start taking more photos.
100% agree!
OG pete
I got a few photoshop tutorials goin on
"Always shoot horizontal", thank you! As a designer, vertical photos are a huge challenge. You can always shoot wide and crop to vertical if that's what you need.
I’m glad to know that I’m not the only one who doesn’t downsize their photos for Instagram. So many tutorials say to downsize but they just end up looking worse than if you exported straight from Lightroom at 100% quality. However, there was an issue on Instagram where photos would look very very processed with no smooth edges and I found out that was dependent on which phone you posted from. Until a year ago I’ve been an android user and my photos came out sharper on Instagram than most others that I’d seen. Then one day the photos just didn’t match the quality of my previous posts. I thought I wouldn’t be able to post another acceptable shot on there again. I got an iPhone through work and posted it from that device and then the issue was solved. I later upgraded my android and the issue no longer persisted! And the kicker is that the issue was also depending on your account. I posted the exact same picture on two different accounts and it came out drastically different.
I think Instagram has since fixed the problem
Yes, that's odd because I have the same problem often. It's good to know I am not the only one.
@@4Sell sorry I'm just getting back to you. Yes I export photos and videos at full resolution and it seems to give the sharpest results compared to other formats
Dang maybe that's what I'm doing wrong. I resize mine to Instagram "friendly" dimensions and holy cow it somehow eats the quality of my images. :C
@@ChellInChaosresize you mean by cropping it to a 4x5 right? And what I should do is just post the picture without cropping it in Lightroom and let instagram resize it. Let me know thanks 🙏
@@tracerhayden573hi there, I’m new to Lightroom can you explain to me by what you mean by exporting photos at full resolution ?
"Yes" to more Tutorials! No matter what it is, if you teach it, I have that weird desire to acquire it. Let's go Peter!🤘🏼
ITS ABOUT DAMN TIME!!!! from my side of youtube, you've inspired others to get so good that they started putting out channels. You're break downs are very entertaining to watch and easy to understand. I'll watch whatever TUTORIAL you put up, even if it's not camera/photography/film related. Talk to us about whatever but keep your shots and editing style. I can't speak for everyone but your personality is what brings me back. Just good energy, good vibes and COFFEE.

I simply love your videos, and YES we did miss tutorials!!! For me, a vlog/cinematic is always a pleasure to watch, but man, seeing a tutorial from my favourite photographer, and knowin' that "Hey, I learned that from Peter!" just blows my mind. I love your style man and for sure it maches my personality aswell, we keep it original, but our favourites always reflect.
I like the variety that you have on your channel. I love the tutorials so much because you are where I learned most of my photography and editing skills. Your passion for creativity is what has kept me going with photography for the last 3 years. So yes, I would very much like more tutorials.
This is what we need some Instagram tutorials!!!
You have a way of communicating to others that make you a great teacher. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy your videos of any variety, you’re relatable. Yet I was very happy to see a tutorial again, I learn a lot from them because I am able to understand what you’re explaining.
Love the tutorials. Being a complete novice at photo and video, everything Ive learned has come from tutorials. Keep em coming please!
We love everything you do so you do you! But yeah more tutorials are also great! 😁
MAJOR REQUEST FOR YOUR NEXT EPISODE. I'd really like to see how you organize your image libraries. I mean REALLY. I've been wrangling my images for years and never felt comfortable with how I'm doing it. Example: I have a stock of a crow, but I'm using the same crow as an asset of a concept photo I'm working on. Once the final photoshop image is complete I have a folder for that image, and a sub folder for the asset images. I don't delete the concept folder because I always wonder if I'll come back to that because there were other great ideas I might use later. You can see how this spirals into a mess. Peter! Help bring some sanity to my world!
yeah Pete....DO THIS
That’s the whole reason I followed you in the first place, it’s great to see how other guys think and approach things. It’s much like bitrate in video it’s about exporting it the correct size and bitrate for platform, I find I end up exporting 3-4 versions for clients now.
The people have spoken, Pete! More tutorials! Your gift for instruction is truly an amazing talent... and it's why many of us found your channel and have decided to stay... hoping day after day for more content!
Let's go Pete! Another tutorial, and YES we like to see this kind of stuff!
Just a quick note: Recently you can also post to Instagram directly from the browser....so the one Airdrop step is omitted👌
YES!!!! Yes more tutorials and just anything long form... I mean dude honestly, I respect you're getting right into shorts and all that stuff, but for me at least... the reason I even became a fan and started watching your channel and yes... every video was because they were informative, interesting, fun, they were captivating to a non weird degree... pretty much everyhting I've learnt about Ps Lr and Pr has been from you. All I'm saying man, is I am SO stoked to see that you've started making more long form again... to be honest, I kinda started slipping away because of the shorts, and yeah I know, I'm just some dude on the internet in Australia that watches your channel and probably don't matter that much, but I gotta tell ya man... you became, and still are my favourite RUclipsr... I'm relieved to see some longer videos coming back Pete.
I stopped watching about 3, 4 years ago because my love of photography died (Just personal reasons) but I have recently returned and I loved seeing what you have been up to! I have now returned and am doing film photography. Something that I never would have seen myself doing before.
Your skintone has looked very red/orange (overly saturated) ever since you switched to the R5C. Are you grading it differently?
It'd be really cool to see a full timelapse of an edit start to finish and some outloud thinking when making certain decisions in the edit. May be a bit crazy but I'd find that super interesting.
Please do more of these types of videos. You literally inspired me to start my own studio. Your tutorials are extremely helpful.
Defiantly love the tutorials, keep them coming! You have a excellent way to translate info to people, that's a big bonus! keep the bangers alive!
Pete I have always loved your tutorials. I cut my photography teeth from your “basics of photography” videos. Heck I occasionally go back to them as a refresher! So I’d love to see one or more on speedlights, and then a series on basics of videography - both shooting AND editing, even if you’re stuck shooting in MP4 or MOV (aka not a raw format of some kind)
wth ...all these years ive been downsizing all my photos because thats what so many tutorials online said. WHY ARE THEY MISGUIDING PEOPLE???? Thank you sir for finally clearing that up! AND YES, LOVE YOUR TUTORIALS
Yessss your tutorials are the staple content that got us hooked in the first place, especially with how entertaining you make them!
love the intro, and yes - love you at the desk - your series of ‘editing your photos’ gives me inspo for approaches to editing and shooting 💛✌️
Peter, yes we want the tutorials. I have been sending your tutorials to many of my friends and others who are knew to the video/photo production world, it contributes so much to the craft
Pete we love everything you do! I found you a few years through your tutorials so when you do one I feel some nostalgia
I LOVE your tutorials and YES I would love to see more. I started watching you because of them and I do miss them. Thank you for all you do!
I still use your old tutorials from three or four years ago. Keep 'em coming! I'd love some more tutorials on color grading for photos and video.
I like how He talks about all these but zero mention about Instagram's recommended Resolution and Maximum Photo File Size. also Instagram App's Data Saver. which keeps you away from uploading HQ photos in the first place.
yesssssssss i wonder why
What made you decide not to tell us about it either?
@@hanstah9501 cause as he said, this is what he does to get nice crispy images
Yes we do Pete!!!! More tutorials!!!
Mr McKinnon - keep the tutorials coming bro!! You were the one that got me into Photography/Photoshop/Lightroom through your tutorials, we always got time for your tutorials bro!
Another awesome video! I saw on twitter you saw my tweet, but thanks so much for sharing some light on these kinds of things Peter!
I use Dropbox for literally everything. That way I know nothing is compressed or altered. Recently switched to H.265 encoding at 16mbps and it’s been super nice for 4k footage uploads
how do you manually switch it to 16mbps? (i use final cut pro)
@@elaztecapecador I’m not too sure about FCPX but it’s gotta be somewhere in advanced output settings. You don’t have to be that exact tho! I bet you could get away with h.265 presets
1. YES sir, please more tutorials, I've learned so much watching and rewatching them.
2. If you use both Lr mobile and adobe Lr on your pc, just edit in the pc but export directly from the phone. that way your don't lose quality and save yourself the transfer from pc to phone.
3. Yes, Star Wars is better than Star Trek haha
*smashes the red button and leaves*
3) no sir, it is not... :D
Yes Peter I love watching your tutorials!!
Love the tutorial Peter! You're one of the reasons I've decided to pursue my passions. Keep it up, much love from Seattle
Interesting, I've seen a lot of people saying you should export photos and videos to the native resolution of Instagram instead of providing full quality, as allegedly that makes it less compressed.
That’s what I do, and it makes my images very sharp! I was surprised to see he just exports as normal. Whatever works, I guess!
@@alvareo92 i think the main fact here, is that he upload the photos and vids from an ios device, because if you have an android phone, instagram is more shitty than it already is... maybe the compressing process on an apple device is more efficient
I tried it and even though I reduced the quality on export as recommended from some youtubers, Instagram reduced it again. So I'm better with uploading good quality and insta is doing the rest and it gives me good enough results
@@jan852 What I'm always baffled by is that when I upload my own work, it always comes out crisp, but as soon as i send work via wetransfer or dropbox and a client tries to use the files (original size, compressed, whatever) they turn into MUSH. It's seemingly at random too.
Pat Kay explains it best in one of his videos if you start with 100% quality you're compressing the highest of quality. If you use 70% quality youre already reducing the image quality and then IG will further compromise it when it compresses it. Makes sense.
Hey Pete I’m photographer from Knoxville, TN. I’ve been watching your videos for almost my entire photography career! In fact it was your videos that actually helped me get to where I’m at! I’d love to be able to chat sometime and pick your brain on some stuff.
This has probably been the most helpful video yet for me, probably because of where I am at in my process!! Really loved the step by step explanation! Thank you! My photos are more crispy!!
would definitely love to learn more from you pete, i mean the first video that watch from you was a tutorial i didn't know about you but then i clicked and looked into more of your videos i liked it,would love to see more as long as you are enjoying making it
Have to ask.... Does Instagram, like other programs (looking at you twitch) give more prominent creators better benefits behind the scene? Not something you have access to but like not compressing images posted by larger accounts? Twitch gives higher bitrate without compressing on larger channels.
There's actually a setting in IG to make the photos crisp. They don't compress as much.
How bro ? Please share
YESSSSS MORE TUTORIALS!!!! I HAVE MISSED YOU DOING TUTORIALS. PLEASE BRING IT BACK!!
Pete I love all your videos, they're always entertaining but I LOVE LOVE it when you sprinkle in a tutorial! Keep up the good brother!
When I check my Instagram folder in photos app (in Android) I see the image size is capped at max (1440x1800) for 4:5 ..so i guess that's the limit. So I go by limiting that from the beginning to avoid too much compression
It really doesn't make a difference. I've found that my photos still compress, even worse than without uploading the full resolution photo. What I've found is the compression is different for different phones. If I post a photo from my google pixel 2 xl my photos are compressed poorly, compared to when I use an emulator on my PC of an S21 (Bluestacks), my photos come out crispy, sharp and very pleasant to look at. It's really convenient so I don't have to transfer the full resolution photos to my phone either.
I have a quick addition to mention.
LR for mobile has an option to export jpegs at 100%. Since I'm on Android (no air drop) I thought this might be a useful tip.
Tldr; do edits on desktop/laptop. Then use LR Mobile to export onto your phone and upload to IG from there.
Just wondering, how can i transfer pictures from my computer (where i downloaded them from the camera) to my phone, without compromising the pics quality? Like dropbox, google drive...? Any tips are appreciated!
@@Sara-mx3on I Have 2 e-mailS I send from one to other
@@Sara-mx3on I put it on Dropbox on PC and download it from there on my android phone...
@@Sara-mx3on my workflow is that I do my editing in LR on my Desktop. Once I'm done, I launch the Lightroom app on my phone and export that Edited image in "Full Quality" JPG to my phone. Then I head off to IG like normal. There should be no loss in quality because you're still exporting directly from lightroom.
Ahhh I just love your energy. So entertaining and I feel like I can absorb information so easily when you explain it ah TYSM PM!!
I miss tutorials
For the Android users out there, export your photo as a 78% JPEG with the long side at 2550 pixels. Hope this helps.
This is different for iphones and you don't really need to do anything since there is only one brand that makes iphones and all the social media companies have an easier time optimizing apps for that phone specifically, whereas us Android people have hundreds of different phones, so the R&D for optimizing apps for those devices is way lower.
u can also upload ur photos on instagram with browser instead of the app on ur mobile phone
78% quality? How is that going to help?
@@CptTristan I've tried that many times and the quality is inferior to uploading from my android
Just won't really make a difference since instagram's processing is always going to degrade the quality to a certain point it's been ridiculous this has been going on for years now and I've had all the Samsung flagship phones

man bro this really helped me a lot. My lightroom updated and removed my current export settings, so this new update has me so confused with everything but you made it 100 times easier. so thank you!
This doesn't apply well for android, we have to reduce the resolution to 1080x1350 for 4x5. Anything other than this, it will be soft. Anybody got suggestions to improve quality on android Instagram ?
Yeah, upload on a iPhone 😂 Instagram isnt optimisated well for android so unfortunately they will never look as crisp as iPhone. I went down this rabbit hole ages ago...
