With the off-road and Pro you are paying a premium for subpar suspensions that if you’re truly taking it off-road you’ll want to upgrade. That’s why I bought the SR5 4WD and added and aftermarket lift, tires, and ARB air locker. It’s a much more capable 4Runner than factory offering.
With the off road you get the rear locker, which takes you from seriously capable to very seriously capable. But most people don't need a rear locker. A standard T4R 4wd is more than enough for anything but serious wheeling.
I think your SR5 Premium was a great choice. If the TRD off road was available with 3rd row seats I would have gotten it. I agree, I’m not a fan of the limited front end or the 20” wheels
Yeah, I'm hoping maybe with the 6th gen they'll over third row in the Pro but its probably just wishful thinking. I would have really liked Cavalry or Voodoo blue
@@DrivenCompanion They look amazing, but I recently visited my local toyota dealer to look at a brand new Pro in Army green, its ugly at first but it grows on you. But then I walked out when I saw the dealer mark-up of 7 thousand dollars... Deal breaker right there. Took a $52k car up to $60 with their other fees..
Buy trd rims, black out badges install all led lights, roof rack if you like go with trd pro grill all that good stuff, I planned to do all that with my sr5 4Runner
Do you think that's overdone? I've considered going that route because it looks great but I see so many other SR5s that have done that and wondering if I'd rather go for a more unique look.
I just wish my SR5P had a manual 4WD lever, instead of the turn dial shifter. ALL 4Runners should have a manual lever, it's part of the trucks identity.
@@DrivenCompanion hello! here the man changed the transfer case from part-time to full-time 4wd. It's not so hard. You can also make the lever-type case. In Russia like swap SUV. My English is bad ☺️. www.land-cruiser.ru/index.php?/topic/183987-full-time-na-hilux/page/3/#comments
Brought my 2020 SR5 Premium home yesterday. Silver with blackout badges. Had a 2018 Tacoma SR5 and my wife still has her 2017 Highlander. This is a split between the Highlander and the Tacoma. It feels like a little tank, but handles a bit like a car
I agree, I was thinking the same thing “tank” when I test drove mine. Only thing to do in the future for me is front and rear lockers...then find a badge “TRD Tank”
Love my sr5 premium. I didn’t need the trd model since I don’t do so much off-roading and also I didn’t like the look of the limited. Happy with the leather or should I say (softex) I have and the sunroof it comes with😎
I upgraded from sr 5 premium to off-road premium. The ORP has the MTS, crawl control, and rear locker which I will probably never use BUT if I decide to sell it, it’ll fetch a better price from the niche crowd that loves these due to better suspension shocks and capability. I overpaid for my ORP…I overpaid for my SR5, but also got more $ when trading it in…how often does that happen.
Another well explained video. 21 months left on silverado lease. Just got it back from deer accident. Next one we're buying and I'm leaning towards Tundra, Tacoma or 4 runner. Ridgeline and other unibody suv's have take a back seat since deer hit and will likely get a real bumper/grille guard like ranch hand which they don't make for 4 runner right now. My preference is down to the 3 Toyota's with the 4 runner being smaller I think would be nice. It's just 2 old farts now traveling north and south a lot and we definitely need 4wd/awd.. Thanks again!!!
I think you are thinking like everyone else. We want to go to the TRD , but you can’t get the 3rd row. Wish Toyota would get with it. But, it does give you the opportunity to customize it as you want it with the saving of the original purchase price
more mature and relaxed version of the Stradman, loving your cars dude. You have deep and thorough info of the cars, but maybe you can add some pictures or video on what you’re talking about :) that would be much much better
Hello Mike! =D I love the 4Runner! However, maybe slow down and do not talk so fast. At first I was confused by what a Toyota Focus was and had to rewind a couple of time. Great video and loved it! ^.^ Keep it up! :)
Thanks for reviewing the info. What running boards if any are you thinking of that will work for children? I just bought my 1st 4runner same trim and could use advice on steps or boards that work well for children.
THIS would be GREAT for me--- I'm old- not in best health- and won't be doing any rough trails. (a sudden jolt to the side as often happens on rough trails could easily paralyze me).. and I most likely won't be " off road" unless it gets slicka nd I slide out of the road. THis is EASILY capable of doing everything I'd ever need it to do... and a LOT cheaper than the TURD..(play on sound- nothng against the vehicle )..
Love my sr5 premium. Heated leather seats and sunroof is what im happy for. Not looking to be one of them trd posers that dont do enough offroading having one. Mine drives just fine.👌 😂
Quick question...Generally speaking. Do all 2WD 4 Runners have a switch/option to bump up to 4WD when needed? I was told by a dealership today they do.
2wd 4Runners don't have 4wd. With the exception of the Limited and Nightshade models which are fulltime 4wd, other 4wd models are rear wheel drive unless you manually switch them too 4wd.
I got a 2012 limited w 3rd row. 180k ish and going strong tires. battery, brakes, bulbs that it. I had 16 diff vehicles in last 16 yrs. I always lean towards tacomas, LC, or 4runner's when I just want out of something because I know my loss $ will be small. Of course I'm looking again for toyota something......
So which generation or which years of the 4Runner SR5 Premium get the 3rd row seat? I've seen some sr5's listed online without a 3rd row seat. Is this something that can be taken off and then later be put on? Thank you.
Hi, Thanks for the video. I want 3rd row seating too (mostly for parents and parent-inlaws). At a local reseller, i saw a 2020 SR5 with 25k miles, and they're asking 38k, and it has 3rd row, adaptive cruise, etc. I live in Boise, Idaho and i might take it out to the snow country once in a while. What do you think?
@First People I'm not really a fan on the Rav4s personally. I grew up driving a 1989 Fj land cruiser and I miss the body on frame style of SUV. The only rav4 I would look into if I had to was the XSE hybrid.
I had a TRD OR Tacoma and the Crawl Control never worked for me when I needed it. I’ve also seen this happen many times to other people in real life and on the internet. It’s really over rated and a waste of money/space/ and future maintenance. I have a 4Runner SR5 now and on the trails I do better than most people with the OR and Pro trim models, so it really depends on the driver.
I don’t know why anyone would ever use crawl control. Usually you’re in 4 low so you crawl by default. Plus, you don’t usually want a constant speed. You always need time to pause and choose your line and crawl control takes that away. Hill descent control is somewhat useful. I usually rely on low gearing to control descent, but sometimes it’s not enough and that’s when hill descent control helps. That’s available on all trim packages. The main thing you get with the TRD models is the locker, which is very useful when you can’t keep all 4 wheels grounded. However, A Trac actually does a very good job in those situations. So...an SR5 is very well equipped - more than most people realize. I’ve done Hells Revenge and Fins & Things in a 2011 SR5 with only upgraded shocks and tires, no lift, no locker. If you know how to use 4 low and A Trac, the SR5 will get you most anywhere you want to go.
I plan on getting a 4Runner with a 3rd row. I’m not sure which one to get, I want to get one that’s loaded or semi loaded new or close to new under 20,000 miles. Please help me out with pointers or video clips
If you want a 3rd row you'll only find it on the SR5, SR5 premium or Limited. Personally I think the SR5 premium is the way to go... The GX460 might be worth a look too since its basically a dressed up 4Runner and used ones are often priced about the same.
Anybody think that I'm okay with the regular 4Runner or should I get the off-road package because I live in a cold climate and it'll help me in the winter?
I live in cold climate and I have the sr5 premium and I've never gotten stuck. You don't need an off road unless you are planning on rock climbing otherwise you should be fine.
So i listened to this guy blabber and read me the features in each 4runner for five minutes just for him to say third raw seat. I deserve to be cheated like that.

I did the same. The Toyota dealer already had the lift with tires. 48k ready to go. Glad I didn't get the TRD.
With the off road you get a manual transfer case which is better
With the off road you get the rear locker, which takes you from seriously capable to very seriously capable. But most people don't need a rear locker. A standard T4R 4wd is more than enough for anything but serious wheeling.
Thank you for being factual, direct, and not going on and on. SO appreciative.
They’re all good trim levels, different ones work best for different people. SR5 4WD was the best for me. Good choice of truck
