Just purchased a 2023 SR5 premium, sadly my lifestyle doesn’t include rule areas or serious off roading. But I enjoy ski trips and desert drives. SR5 had everything I need and no overkill off roading systems I felt like I would hardly use
This is my exact boat too. The occasional off-road and never anything that's reaaaally off the beaten path. Maybe run into some mud, maybe some sand, some small rocks. But never any big rocks, rugged terrain, or mountainous sand dunes.
I went with SR5 because I'm not a hard-core rock-crawler. I love the body shape and the cavernous cargo capacity, and I just wanted some off-road chops to get thru light-moderate trails and pound thru some Canadian prairies winters. I'd be just posing to own a Pro and I don't wanna do that. I am picking up some TRD rims and planning to wrap them in some AT tires.
SR5 would’ve my choice, I can modify it the way I want. Not to mention, more cost effective than the over-glorified Pro. Don’t get me wrong, I love the color and look. Although, it’s the same engine and transmission with a different paint job that has more bells and whistles. The probability of me using those features are slim to none. Now if there was a hurricane, I would put that to the test.
Love your trd pro Untamed but if I was looking at 4runners, my money is going to an sr5 1) because of money savings over the trd pro 2) all the mods I do with an sr5 4runner it would still come out cheaper than a trd pro and 3) If the only things I'm missing out on with the sr5 is mts, crawl control, and a mechanical lever for 4x4, then I'm doing alright with the truck itself. I think the 4runner is better than alot of trucks out there and understand the love and lore behind them. Hope you had a great Thanksgiving sir 🍻
I went with an SR5P… mainly monetary savings but it was a decent deal and I liked the beige interior and the sun roof option plus it was a black 4Runner. Mainly what made me go that route
Same here $40,850 MSRP, put TRD pro wheels $800, dynapro ATm tires $750, OEM Toyota side steps $280, sold existing wheels and tires $750. Put ekr seat covers from Amazon. I’m a happy man at around $42,000
I bought my 2022 SR5P back in November 2021, right when the shortage of cars was at it’s peak. At the Toyota dealership they had several Limited trims and one Nautical Blue SR5P. I ended up purchasing Nautical Blue SR5P right there. I never looked back at the TRD Offroad nor the Pro trims. I knew I can save money on fixing up my rig, currently it’s lifted with ToyTec Aluma Boss 2.0, RRW RR7-H, 285/70/17 Toyo Open Country ATIII. As long as I have ATRAC, I’m confident I can get out of any rough situations. It’s already hit the trails in Monache Meadow, Leavitt Lake and Alabama Hills.
4runner is such a great vehicle, can always go bare bones then slowly add to make it everything you wanted. The great thing about modifying a 4runner is they last so long you will get a lot of use out of the add ons. I went off road premium to get the sunroof and kdss. Have put around 15k into it to make it exactly what I want, I plan on keeping it forever even when I get another daily.
We just got a 2023 SR5P 4x4 mainly due to having the optional 3rd row. We love it and just ordered some Black Rhino wheels and some Nitto graplers plus some rocksliders. Big difference from our Honda Pilot lol.
TRD PRO all the way. Something about the PRO - it's special and will prove it when you sell it. Unbelievable resale value. Plus you gotta love those Fox shocks. I am very blessed to have a 2023 TRD PRO 4Runner. All the TRD PRO'S are special. If you can get one, do it, you won't regret it.
Previously had a Gladiator Rubicon which looked awesome but I never once took it off road, or used the lockers, disconnect, etc....traded it for an SR5 Premium 4WD and couldn't be happier - smoother ride, still have the 4WD and A-Track if I need it. Everything I need and nothing I dont! I would like to get rid of the Duellers when it's time and do the same Falken Wild Peak I've had on my Gladiators and Wranglers.
For me finding an Off Road was like looking for a unicorn, but the Off Road Premium was pretty available. Not a huge deal though since I really do like leather seat upgrades.
We have a 2014 Trail that is essentially the same as the TRD Off Road. I have installed a 3" lift dual batteries with a Redarc controller along with an Iceco fridge, rock sliders and winch. It may not be as cool as a Pro, but it does have the rear locker, crawl control and ATRAC so it is just as capable. You can add the rear locker to the SR5 and almost everything we have so that is a less expensive option. The TRD Off Road is a nice mid ground between the two...
I wanted to go SR5 or SR5 Premium with around 100k miles. For around 4-5k more I was able to find a Trail Edition. TRD is cool if you can afford it but anything less is just as capable IMO.
I went with a used SR5 4x4 because of the limited availability and markup. I wanted an Off-road but local dealerships are nuts in SoCal. I eventually would love to upgrade to a GX460!Great video Untamed. Thanks for the comparison.
I bought a used '18 SR5 Premium a little under a year ago. I actually went to look at a TRD Pro that was at the same dealership that was stupidly well priced (almost too good to be true kind of moment). The only thing I could spot from online photos is it honestly looked like someone took a chisel to the passenger side dash on the TRD Pro, there were gouges taken out of it, but the price was so good you could replace the entire dash and still come out ahead. But alas, the TRD sold the day before I went to the dealership, so the salesman I worked with showed me the SR5P. He also stated that he wasn't certain about the TRD, but considering the price it was listed at, he said "it may not have had a clean Carfax" (whatever that means). Either way, I bought the SR5p. I live in the SE US where snow is not an issue, I don't off road (though I like the idea of being able to if I had to), and I really love the way it drives and how much space I have (I upgraded from driving a small coupe). The TRD's are awesome and I still pass them with some envy, but I'd never utilize 80% of the features they offer, but more power to those that do. I will say I really dislike the stock SR5 wheels though. I plan on changing out tires soon and I think I may go with aftermarket or even TRD wheels. SR5 wheels just look cheap imo. I'm hoping I'll get lucky and my local dealership will buy my stock wheels to get me a bit of a discount on the SR5's, but with almost 40k on the stock wheels, they may not be interested.
I went with an SR5 premium 4x4. I wanted one to do a build on. The Trd pro is nice but it’s pretty much a already done project. You can add that Trd stuff on other models if you really want to like the skid plate, the wheels, the grill and stuff like that.
Went with a 2019 4Runner . Made sure to find one that was before all the Toyota safety sense junk . Went with that also because why buy parts that I’ll just replace anyway . I knew I’d regear and lift it. I added a locker . No one I know of uses the crawl control and in all my off roading years did we ever need that feature lol.
I think the best model anybody can buy is the TRD Off-road, it’s only a few thousand more than the SR5 , and over $10k-$15k less than the TRD Pro. Based on pre-owned models atleast. These trucks are bullet proof it doesn’t make sense to buy new atleast that’s my take on it.
I went with the SR5 Premium with the Predator package so it had just about everything on it that I wanted to do to it the Predator package has all the TRD stuff on it with wheels and skid plate and side steps, and to be honest it has enough stuff in it for me although I wouldn't mind a rear locker but I will never rock climb with it just light trails and dirt roads.👍
Being a guy with 3 kids and a wife, getting a 3rd row to spread children out for peace of mind, well just peace, that was the defining thing that made us go with an SR5 Premium. I think it’s underrated in its usefulness and clever packaging. I would live to have an offroad with KDSS but since you can’t get a 3 row with a locker, ATrac has to suffice. And honestly from previous experience with ATrac on our old FJCruiser it works good enough to tackle the stuff we need it to do. The other big gripe I have with the Pro and the OR are the payload capacities. 850lbs is almost useless if you are loading any amount of people, gear, or Nolting on aftermarket items like bumpers, sliders, racks, RatT’s and other gear. So yeah, we just picked up a new SR5 Premium, 3 row and it will see some family travels when we want to go camp more minimalist than in our e series Sportsmobile. I was pleasantly surprised to actually get a few thousand off of MSRP. We tried to buy this spec of a 4Runner last year and waited over 6 months before we gave up. Seems like inventory has finally caught up with demand.
Congrats on getting your SR5 Premium for a few thousand off! That’s awesome. 🙌 I agree, the SR5 is plenty capable and able to tackle 9 out of 10 things you’d ever want to try. 👍
I went with the TRD ORP with KDSS. Though I notice the ones with 3rd row have more 2nd rear seat room because the 2nd row slides back a few more inches where non 3rd rows are fixed in place in the forward setting.
Simple. Customize third party. Love the silver wheels vs. the trending absence of light black wheels. (I’m an artist) Prefer a Metallic Forest Green color as with my 4.0 Wrangler Sahara 1998. It’s all about personal taste and style and geographic relevance (practicality); What do I want vs. what do I need? City show-off Blue will never blend in, or complement, Oregon.
The Sr5 does have a sunroof option. I was actually starting to think only the Sr5 had them. I am having the hardest time finding a good trd with sunroof. I have only seen a single voodoo blue and a single lime rush trd neither have sunroof. The search continues.
so how much would it be to put in an aftermarket locker in the rear, say ARB so I can air down/up my tires to maybe come close to what a trd pro can do? also maybe upgrade the suspension a bit to get a slightly taller tire on there.
I think the sweet spot is Off Road Premium. Lol so this dude owns the bare bones base level SR5, and the top trim TRD Pro haha. I could see myself doing something like that. I actually wanna own a 4Runner, and a Prius lol. Those two vehicles would be totally opposite of each other, and IMO perfectly complement each other. One capability but bad gas mileage champion…and one awesome commuter with awesome gas mileage champion.
There are all kinds of versions, my SR5 does have extended suspension and a sunroof. What I do see differently is that that TRD has different locks on the differential and that extra lever next to the gear lever. Otherwise everything is very similar. I really like that front of the TRD and I am sure that that cover (capot) and that bumper from the TRD can be installed on the SR5 😅👌
I got my 22 sr5, it was impossible to find one without a sunroof. Ill admit it's a streetqueen. Only upgrade i did upper control arms formore caster to get rid of the wandering, i did the same to my 09 tacoma. Only complaint is the hvac on the 22 doesnt have that much airflow/force from vents even when on hi speed.
i would prefer the sr5 PREMIUM , as i like the heated side mirrors which comes with blind spot, power passenger seats , sunroof , trd wheels with black out badges which concludes to a smiliar trd pro
Picked up my 2018 sr5 premium 4wd with heated leather seats, 3rd row seats, sunroof, same screen as your trd. Already lifted with outlaw wheels? Looks sick anyways. All I’ll do is add the roof rack low viper cut and some lights!
Personally I'd spend the extra 12K on the Pro but I have the extra to spend. I get it if people don't and want to buy the SR5.Think your vid showed the difference, one looks sweet and one looks average.
These mark ups are crazy but I ended up with a 2021 sr5 4x4 it does have 65k miles but who’s counting I couldn’t pass 35k but then the California taxes were 3k and 5k for loan bank contract 😢 but happy
Sr5 because it had a sun glasses holder instead of the air port controlled options, no silly electronic shifter(yes its electronic no actual mechanical shift its as fake as the hood scoop) I prefer the 4x4 dial like the land cruiser and sr5. Also hate the TRD on the seats and red stitching feel it's gimmicky prefer the chrome and black JUST like the LC has. Most hate anything chrome it doesn't bother me. I wish I had the slide our rear cargo deck Most people don't like because it's 1 step closer to a tailgate. Anyway... I like my sr5 wouldn't mind trd off road but sr5 is comfortable enough not to want to upgrade.
Not sure I’m seeing your point. The Land Cruiser is for sure too cramped. The 4Runner is even more cramped. Which is why we’re buying the more spacious Sequoia TRD Pro. 🤷♂️

Old guy and not a Toyota guy. Yours is an excellent video. Thanks
Always liked 4runners, but had to get the Solar Octane. So the pro for me. I see so many white, black, grey 4runners, wanted to be different.
Nice! You chose wisely imo
Love the Sheltie.

Nice! Such a sweet setup 👌 how are you liking it? It ride okay with the 3” lift?
Getting an SR5 for a pavement princess that does great in snow!
Both are nice. Trd pro for when you wanna flex. Sr5 for when you just wanna run it into the ground and not look back.

I went with an SR% because I am treated it like my custom PC. I am going to build it with parts and mods and go from there :)
I think that’s a good move. A blank canvas to build out… building out a TRD Pro isn’t ideal.
How is 2nd hand market on used TRD pros nowadays ?😊
