This guy’s living the life overlanding around the American west in his “summer weeks.” Clearly put some TLC into this cool rig and a good sport for giving it a shot on this course.
As a fellow T4R SR5 owner, I really appreciate the build on that rig. Nicely done! Goes to show the TFL course isn't as easy as the haters like to claim it is. Nice video from Case and Alex, btw. Keep up the great work guys.
I LOVE this series! Its so interesting to see what folks put into/onto their trucks to "make them their own". There is just a pride in ownership that these enthusiasts have that cant be matched.
I think the rear locker would’ve gotten you through. ATRAC is rad but has limitations. I recently got stuck in a spot where I needed a front locker. Winch got me through that spot. :-)
Props for rocking the SR5 and standing by it through and through! Massive respect! Most impressive thing was perfectly bending that carrier back into place at the end
I know he needed that rear tire carrier to haul that big spare, but man. What a boat anchor. Really needs more of an aftermarket steel rear bumper with an integrated tire carrier. This one just destroys his departure angle.
Nice set up and video!! We have a 2014 Trail 4Runner. We are Overlanders as well. A bit lighter without the rooftop tent drawers or spare tire carrier. Have rock sliders a front 12000 winch on a hitch mount, Redarc controller with dual Optima batteries with a EcoFlow Delta battery pack and 2 100 watt solar panels. ICECO fridge. We are a bit lighter and can remove the front hitch for approach angle. With the rear locker 3" OME lift and 33" Baja Boss A/T's we might be able to clear some of that mud. Would be interesting to try...
Not to bash on the dude. It fits his need on his home turf then that’s awesome. But as you can tell here is a clear example of lockers before lights and unnecessary weight.
Yeah, i still don't get the heavy bulky tent on top thing. My two man tent weighs 5 pounds, sets up in 10 minutes and doesnt cut my mileage by 20%. Plus if im staying at a campsite for a few days i dont have to pack it up when i go exploring for the day. If I'm in bear country, i can just sleep in back of my rig. I guess i just like simplicity but to each their own. Nice set up he has though.
I think those 34’s aired down would fit in the spare slot, give you more rear clearance. I couldn’t imagine using the at hitch tire carrier on some of these Colorado trails. I feel like I drag my trail hitch ALL THE TIME on trails here. The trailer hitch and bumper were an issue on China Wall a few weekends back. I’m already looking at rear frame chop high clearance custom bumpers because of how that weekend and my rear end went. Lol
Countercounterpoint lol. Keep the 34s and get an actual rear bumper with a tire carrier. Those hitch tire carriers are already so expensive it's not that much of a jump. Or just put the spare in your trunk if you have the space!
Picked up a '23 ORP last week, with only 4,000 miles (w/ KDSS). Tires, winch, ARB front locker is about all I need for my easy- to medium-level offroading.
I have a 2020 4runner trd orp with the same exact lift. Great suspension. Also I have been running spider trax wheel spacers for over two years now and have been on all type of terrain and I have never had a problem with the spacers. Jst always toque to spec
33s might have been the better choice… and the tire in the back seems to get in the way quite a bit. The weight of the roof rack, drawers, ect really hurt the performance…But cool video and nice looking 4Runner.
Another thing I want to point out is those two front hooks aren’t strength rated for recoveries. Those two hooks are primarily used to tie down your vehicle to a tow truck.
@cameronj9890 Yup... dont' know what the heck WW-wf8tu is even talking about. A common sized set of pizza cutters for this truck is 285/55/17 and 280/55/17 which are 34" and 33" narrow. It effectively is the same diameter as the tires the 4runner in the video has. If anything the pizza cutters will rub less. just cause you go skinni doesn't mean you need to go larger in diameter than the guys running fatter tires. and not to mention the benefits in gas milage opposed to the fatter tires.
Tires are too wide. Adding spacer will poke them out which changes scrub radius which requires more cutting - plenty of information on RUclips on this. In addition, narrower tires will cut through mud better.
That's what I was thinking as soon as he mentioned the size. Wide tires look cool, but the 4Runner doesn't like them. Pizza cutters are the way to go on these.
Want to see TFL test tall and wide tires vs tall and skinny tires. From what I’ve scene looks like tall and skinny tires are the advantage but not people run them because of how it looks.
Man, that well equipped 4runner SR5, however CBI Or C4 fab low pro front bumper (winch compatible) with integrated 30 inch rigid light bar, an A-pillar amber lights etc.. Will not only enhance the capability of the 4runner off the road. You can go places which are challenging for the rig with the current setup.
Your title say "Skip the TRD" but your video says otherwise... LOL! If that guy wanted to have any chance, he should have lower the tire pressure way more. On such big tires, going from 36 psi to 20 doesn't move the needle. In that case, he should have been able to come out of that mud with A-trac.
Have you taken your rig up to the mountain mine in Kingman Wash? It was the first thing I tried when I got my 4R venture this year. I did the mine run as a newbie with zero experience but it was super cool. You can dive up to and turn around right at the mine but try not to drive too far past it. The turn-around space past it gets smaller so If you decide to try it yourself please be careful take your time & enjoy! To ensure you know... don't drive past the mine at the top of the hill.
Surprised those tire fit, sheesh. For a 34 tho, maybe look at 285/75R17 instead of spacers...but you just bought tires so not really the best option now, would have been good earlier. Have that size in my truck and was a great choice, especially with a matching spare
Interesting I think you proved the point and reason why people who go off roading buy the trd off road. .he learned you could see that first mud drop the rear the right tire was not even moving the lockers would done it .
Probably time for mud tires and a locker. The problem with traction control, it doesn't like mud or snow. There are just some things a locker can do a lot better.
is going slow through obstacles like this more of a deliberate test? ive been wheeling all my life, and I would NEVER go that slow thru some of these parts just crawling like that...
Great SR5 video, The build is not quite done. Add some Off Road tires less air & try wheeling with a pair of Maxtrax will get you out of some ugly snags. Looking forward to your next Adventure!!
Contact Overland Pacific Northwest. They are based out of OR. And they got their TRD's dialed in. See if they would be interested in coming out and give your ranch a go. They got the steel bumpers, winches, lockers and a lift. Driving the TRD's with all that, they tackle most things effortlessly.
@@JAMESWUERTELE it's common on the forums with people who put a lot of miles on. The front transfer case doesn't like the angle and wears out one of the bearings prematurely.

I have a 94 Toyota 4runner SR5 4×4 offroad V6 with a 5 speed manual transmission I would like to try out or trails out and I like your video it was very good I live in marianna Florida and Pensacola Florida too my name is William Hughes
Bizarre to me to spend all that money on lifts, tents and refrigerators but not add the one thing that actually helps you get unstuck? ATRAC is great don’t get me wrong but it doesn’t work in mud.

Kudos to the owner for being a sport. He obviously built his 4runner for a different purpose and yet willing to go through the deal... 👍
Very nice rig. Weight is the big drawback in any off-road rig. As far as lockers you can add aftermarket anytime (front and rear)
Didn't seem like A-Trac was kickin in. Time to get a rear locker. Getting an aftermarket locker on an SR5 is a lot cheaper than a TRD.
It doesn’t look like they offer a-trac until you get into the off-road model, at least that’s what I see from Toyotas website.
It was the tires, not A-Trac that failed. He had plenty of wheel on the ground, just no traction.
@@Mr_Kirk_ At 11:47, you can see that the right rear wheel is not spinning. And at 18:18, it appears the left front isn't spinning.

@@IAMTRASHMAN267It's not built exclusively for mud, but it looks like a great overlander.
Too heavy and too top heavy. Roof rack not safe, overloaded . Needs some traction boards at least if he has none.

Sadly a 33 is the biggest tire you can fit in the stock 4Runner spare location. But agreed on the hitch carrier not helping

I prefer narrow tyres
Narrow tires have their place. But when rigs like this already have rubbing issues, the height becomes a factor.

Low range doesn't do too good in mud, you need momentum.
