The Nightstalker tv movie was the first modern take on vampires that made my childhood brain seriously think what vampires were all about. The scene where a body is found out in an open area in broad daylight with no sign of how it got there caught my attention for some reason. But then Richard Ramirez was out on the prowl and I got the 70s syndicated tv show confused with the real life serial killer.

It looks like, once again, the villain's plot is undermined by the screenwriter and/or director realizing that the running time is over 90 minutes. So, wrap it up quickly! Favorite modern day vampire film: THE LOST BOYS (1987). It pretty much reinvented the vampire in movies.

For example, one I like is Shiki, a Japanese anime series... that rips off Stephen King's Salem's Lot... which itself ripped off Dracula. ... why are all the other ones I'm thinking off are also anime? A bad job of shooting day for night. As for the reflected light off the cross, the only way it works is if they crossed the line and the cross is shot from the wrong side.
"The Return of Dracula" with Francis Lederer (1958) is the earliest I can think of where we know for certain it's modern day; the much better "Son of Dracula" (1943) may be modern day but it's not clear. Incidentally the first has the dumbest demise of Dracula that I think has ever been done. No spoilers.
The victim is drained of blood and has no water in her lungs. The coroner says it is the worst suicide by drowning he has ever seen. The inspector says he has to get back to his real job of writing parking tickets and bring in some money.
Not a movie but the Forever Knight series did a wonderful, and occasionally cheesy, job of portraying modern day...1990s Canadian...vampires and their relationships with eachother and the humans in their lives.
John Landis's INNOCENT BLOOD starring Anne Parillard and Anthony LaPaglia, with Robert Loggia as a Mafia Don who gets Vanpirized...and LOVES it(!), is a lot of fun and kind of sexy. Though clearly a B-Movie, PALE BLOOD starring George Chakiris as a vampire with a fold-out Insta-Coffin, Wings Hauser as an unhinged filmmaker trying to prove the existence of vampires, and Pamela Ludwig as an investigator with an interest in the occult, is also pretty good. And for my last trick? How about QUEEN OF THE DAMNED, which combines life-affirming New Age Vampires with NuMetal with an evil vampire queen, who wants to drink the world dry of blood with the young female member of a secret society devoted to the supernatural, who discovers she was raised to be a vampire… If she wants it. It is hilarious, awful, and strangely great in equal measure.

I don't know, but in the UK and Ireland, there are no Counts - we have Earls instead, of Sandwich among others (but for some reason still have Countesses, not erm... Earlesses?). So maybe Count just sounds more exotic - and continental and foreign, and therefore more sinister :) .

It was actually first a movie and when the movie was successful, they turned it into a TV series. I agree, though, that it's a really fun series.

Lake of Dracula - a Japanese take on the genre from Toho would be great for DC Streaming as would Onur Tukel's slacker horror/comedy Summer of Blood.

When you said, _"Bat shaped..."_ I was expecting some other "sh" word when I saw what he had in his hand.
More than Dr. Doom the Green Lantern villain Sinestro would work better for the Count.
"The Return of Dracula" with Francis Lederer (1958) is the earliest I can think of where we know for certain it's modern day; the much better "Son of Dracula" (1943) may be modern day but it's not clear. Incidentally the first has the dumbest demise of Dracula that I think has ever been done. No spoilers.

The victim is drained of blood and has no water in her lungs. The coroner says it is the worst suicide by drowning he has ever seen. The inspector says he has to get back to his real job of writing parking tickets and bring in some money.
Not a movie but the Forever Knight series did a wonderful, and occasionally cheesy, job of portraying modern day...1990s Canadian...vampires and their relationships with eachother and the humans in their lives.
John Landis's INNOCENT BLOOD starring Anne Parillard and Anthony LaPaglia, with Robert Loggia as a Mafia Don who gets Vanpirized...and LOVES it(!), is a lot of fun and kind of sexy.
Though clearly a B-Movie, PALE BLOOD starring George Chakiris as a vampire with a fold-out Insta-Coffin, Wings Hauser as an unhinged filmmaker trying to prove the existence of vampires, and Pamela Ludwig as an investigator with an interest in the occult, is also pretty good.
And for my last trick? How about QUEEN OF THE DAMNED, which combines life-affirming New Age Vampires with NuMetal with an evil vampire queen, who wants to drink the world dry of blood with the young female member of a secret society devoted to the supernatural, who discovers she was raised to be a vampire… If she wants it. It is hilarious, awful, and strangely great in equal measure.
Yeah, Heywood Floyd there is usually a ineffectual good guy. And it's not like he's a bad actor.

Not only that, Tracy Reed is also in this movie; she played General Buck Turgidson's girlfriend in Kubrick's "Dr. Strangelove". So MST3K could also have said, "Stanley Kubrick saw this and said, 'we found our Miss Scott.'"
Why are counts always vampires and vampires always counts in vampire movies?
Maybe hack writers don't take advantage of all the amazing possiblities of the genre and just poop out more movies exactly like all prior movies. It's a damn shame.

I don't know, but in the UK and Ireland, there are no Counts - we have Earls instead, of Sandwich among others (but for some reason still have Countesses, not erm... Earlesses?). So maybe Count just sounds more exotic - and continental and foreign, and therefore more sinister :) .
Playing the "hero," William Sylvester, Dr Heywood Floyd in 2001 A Space Odyssey ... and the idiot ass oppportunist in Gorgo. And he also played the boss figure in the TV series The Gemini Man with Ben Murphy, the turkey man, according to Joel and the Bots....
Speaking of which, Paul seems to be one of MST3K's favorite character archetypes: the ineffective hero who does NOTHING to save the day, but never beyond taking credit for doing so. "Thank God I saved you!" Cal in This Island Earth, also riffed by MST3K.
