BEGINNERS! Please DO NOT attempt to pre-break (or do too much crazy stuff) for at least your first pair of pointe shoes. You must go into wearing them completely raw and break them in naturally! Then once you have had a few pairs you can develop techniques for breaking them in that work for you, and unless you are dancing at a high level you may not have to pre-break them much at all (because it is likely you won't be performing with a brand new pair of shoes). Naturally breaking them in is the best way to go about it (especially since pointe shoes are so expensive and pre-breaking means they don't last as long), and if later on you find bending them slightly and standing on the box is helpful then go for it!
@@jmsemmett if you're not a beginner you don't really have to, but if you are a begginer you have to go the natural way in order to build strengh and learn how your feet behave in pointe, these pointe shoe hacks are for professionals or senior pointe users because not everybody breaks the Shank the same way, you might even have one foot that breaks higher than the other, also, the jetglue use needs a lot of knowledge of were your shoe dies first or were you need more support, that's why you can't do that without having tones of experience.
Try not to do these hacks if you're a beginner (mainly the first one!!) but once you are more comfortable, confident and used to your pointe shoes..... go ahead, don't rush yourself if you are new to pointe shoes!!!!
they are such a gift of accomplishment and proud in pink satin! PLEASE RE check out these classes -they can be harder than a rugby match on your body , but your body becomes art.re..MemEBER THIS IS AN ART FOR MALES AND FEMALES and a tough one so fellas and pardon this wonky keyboard!
I wish she'd said that... I saw so many girls with a 3/4 shank when they can't even stand in their shoes. That's why all the shoes stay at the studio now....
Question: why don't pointe shoe makers make shoes with some of these life hacks already built in? I realise every dancer and every foot is different, but it seems to me that things like shaving down the base of the sole, removing the satin from the toe and providing additional cross marks to improve grip could help almost everyone? Even principal dancers, who have custom-made shoes, seem to spend loads of time "destroying" their custom-made shoes before they're fit for purpose. Why is this?
dance2felina, thanks. 👍🏻 I realise Gaynors are a little different from this. Perhaps they're an example of the future? But not everyone likes them, do they? It's really just a general question. Pointe shoes haven't changed much (if at all) in decades/centuries, they're very expensive, and yet they don't arrive suitable to dance in immediately and they have a short life. Despite the unique and clever craftsmanship it takes to make pointe shoes, dancers immediately have to rip them apart, bash them, soak them in chemicals and cut bits off them before they are deemed dance worthy. It honestly puzzles me that a clever engineer hasn't worked closely with a foot specialist and a dance physiotherapist to design something much more durable and ready-to-wear, which immediately provides great support to dancers and looks beautiful without dancers having to tear apart a brand new pair of shoes. Imagine a painter buying a brand new paint brush but having to bash it, cut it up and soak it in shellac before usage. 🤣
JaneyMay99 Gaynor Minden has the new technology. super soft, and ready only the matte effect would have to be done. the problem is that the fitting is not always the best, it took me at least 100 pairs of shoes of different brands to get to my perfect pair: repetto la carlotta in 5 1/2 medium. and I still have to cut the shank to 3/4 , step on the box to extend the wings, bang to make quiet, and shave the sole edges... 😥
JaneyMay99 but I yet have to get a good fitting pair of Gaynors. I think that now that I know what works for me I can bring my repetto and get a good Gaynor that fits.
You are so brave. I would cry if I went to buy some shoes and then have to slice them to bits. Oh my gosh. Now you are cutting the toe part off. Help. I can't watch haha 🙂😊
To be fair, these tips are from professionals and they're in it and on their toes for 8+ hours a day, not even the best fitting shoes will stand bring pushed past its limits in a day without being modified and possibly hurting the dancer.
Claudia, you are so popular at my studio! I was in class the other day and my friend was showing me some dance tips she learned from RUclips. I said, are they from Claudia Dean? She said, yes! I love her videos. I just subscribed to her. You are changing the game one step at a time. Thank you for your tips. I loved this video!!
Haley A I'm not English can you explain me what is the liquid she put on the Pointe in 9 hacks? Please I mean a dancer (hip hop) and we started 9 years ago using also ballet, and on Pointe of course I prepare myself my shoes but I never did this before, can you please explain what kind of material is the nine hacks, maybe I can go better. Thank you in advance
you will be "ruining" your shoes for life if you keep dancing -it is just how it goes ...if you want to try without them get a pair of lace -up tennis shoes and 2 ribbons stuff the tennis shoes with cotton wool in the toes and lace them on , giving suppport for your ankles -this hack has saved me so much ...and is fun ...good luck!
Hi Dancers! I just wanted to say Thankyou SO SO much for all your support on this video so far. However, I did notice a few comments about when I refer to 'wood' being in a pointe shoe. When I film, it's obviously unscripted and I must have said this mistakenly. When I watched the final version of the video once my videographer had sent it through , I noticed this (along with a few other things) and decided to not get my videographer to edit it out. My content is real, raw & I accidentally said this instead of saying the layers of fabric/glue. Apologies! Honest mistake but thanks again for all of the LOVE you all give me when I upload! Happy dancing ❤❤
Claudia Dean Coaching I have actually heard ppl call it wood b4; I wouldn't worry over it. I like that u aren't relying on script, but rather translation through experience.
Thank you Claudia Dean Coaching, my lifes passion was ignitited again partly by your coaching and dilligence for the art! thank you Brooke the ballerina in Ireland , cheers!
I got new point shoes and they feel so much better cause my last pair were dead... and I didn't know I thought it was just my feet becoming weak, when I bought my new shoes... THAT ALL CHANGED. By the way your such an inspiration for young dancers like me, keep up the great work😌😍 like if your an AUZZIE🐨
Hello Claudia, I am from Mexico, watching from New York City, I didn't know you were in the Royal Ballet!! that is so amazing, I love their repertoire and everything about it. Please do a video about your life in the Royal Ballet, roles, life, etc. you are very young! why did you stop dancing? I see ladies that look 60 on pointe shoes here all the time!! no joke!!
Grace // SWSOD Dancer Congrats!💗👏I got my pointe shoes a little while ago and it was very exciting! Our teacher one class just showed up with a box of point shoes to size all of us.😊Then when our pointe shoes had been shipped to our studio (which took quite a few months) she showed us how to sew them. The next class we started!💗I hope you have fun!!
It's always so funny: you buy shoes that are worth around 100 $ to just destroy them before the first used and throw them away within a couple of hours :D
I just took pre pointe one and I have Aria Capezio pointe shoes and they where 90$ and if I did this my mom would ground me then my dance teacher fuss at me then my friends would question me 😐😐 but I love this vid
Hi Claudia, I was just wondering- what would the longevity of your shoe be like if you only did 1-2 pointe classes a week (and you applied all these hacks)? I'm only asking because I know with the Royal Ballet you would have had a new shoe/new shoes each day, whereas I can only afford to buy them every so often. How many wears do you think I could get out of a shoe after cutting/shellacing/glueing etc?

at my studio we use Gaynor Minden pointe shoes. i much prefer them tbh, you don't have to destroy them and you can just stick on suede rather than cut the shoe. cool hacks tho.
When I was in classes, I moved away and can't go to my studio at the moment or I'd be going back, but i used gaynor as well, they worked so well for me, i didn't have to work as hard to the get the arch broken in as much and had such a smooth look to them. But everyone else in my studio didn't enjoy pointers as much as i did. So i always did the pointe solos for the studio and always went with people when they were getting their first pair
Yay! Thank you so very much ...I cannot dance at the momement , many illlnessses -sp- what would you watch for inspiration ?I just saw some of Gelsey Kirklands new school -I am so happy for her vs the 80s and trials with Barishnakov....what inspires your soul when you are off dance?
That was so useful!! I'm hopefully getting on pointe this summer and I've been watching a lot of pointe videos--Your hacks are so good!! I've seen most of them already, but it was nice to have someone actually explain them and show a demonstration 😊👍🏻💗
Is a 3 quarter shank really a good thing? Isn't that highly dependant on the individual's foot? Also I feel like the last hack is an invitation for getting blisters
Daph Duck Generally, I've heard that you shouldn't 3 quarter your shoes if you're a beginner because it requires more strength. However, I've heard of many more experienced dancers cutting their shanks because it makes their foot look more archy. I think that as long as you cut it where your arch is, then it will look fine.
Yeah, almost all teachers and professionals I talked to said that you shouldn't 3 quarter your pointe shoes as a beginner. After a few years of experience, you can try it out and see if it helps you or not.
Daph Duck most teachers want you to break your shoes in with hard work. cutting the shank makes it easy to achieve that broken in feeling, and does make the shoe look better, so it's common for pros who go through 2 pairs a day to break theirs in through hacks like this as much as possible that way they are clean and new for performances.
I've been on pointe for a year and recently got shoes with a 3/4 shank, and they've been pretty helpful for me. the first day i used them, my arches were sore because it takes more effort to get up on pointe, but it's easier to fully pointe my toes and walking in demi-pointe is more comfortable than with regular shoes.
Also, as for the last hack I pretty much only wear tights in my shoes for performances when it is required and you'll notice that in a lot of professional classes, dancers usually roll their tights up and dance barefoot in their shoes (except for padding if a dancer chooses to use it) and I love the feel of the pointe shoes on my heels. I have never gotten blisters from it except for when my elastics are sewn to close to my Achilles tendon. I don't like the look of professionals wearing their tights like she showed for performances however because it still is noticeable a lot of times. For performances, I wear the tights like normal and wet the back of my heels and apply rosin to the heel of my tights if that makes sense. That always worked with me.
i ride dressage....equine ballet if you will. (i took dance as a young girl, but chose horses!😄) it seems a ballet dancer getting their first point shoes is like a young horse finally reaching the level in their training when they fitted for their first double bridle. it is a right of passage! much respect for your art! ❤🌹
Claudia, do you have any tips for pointe shoe shanks twisting off the heel? Will three-quartering solve this issue? Please let me know. I love your videos and tips so much! 💕
You're probably wearing the wrong shoes, or they're faulty. I know my friend got a faulty pair even though they were the ones she normally buys, and the shanks were twisted a bit. She had to return them.
i know this is old but girl, you saved my life with the tenth hack!! I have a ballet intense tomorrow and i am wearing russian points for the first time. They kept slipping off my heel and i was desperate
Wow great tips! Wish I’d have known these 45 years ago in my ballet days. Back then, we used to just wear them ‘as they come’ so to speak, straight from the packet. My mum might have been horrified at what you did to the shoes but I know exactly what you mean and how brilliant these hack are. Lovely video x
I never take the top part of the satin off. My dances have a lot of fouettés and I find it much easier to do with the satin on top intact because it flows better
Really SOLID tips! NOT the norm on RUclips, norm other dancer avenues..... THANK you, Claudia Dean!! Oh, and by the way, you have gorgeous dancer lines! Sigh... Your openness to sharing tips and secrets is admirable. Wish you coached in the USA - know SEVERAL dancers who would eagerly seek your coaching and guidance! Consider a trip????
no you’re wrong. the reason why they go through many pairs of shoes a day or a year, it’s because pointe aren’t very strong. if you use just one pair of pointe shoes for a long time, you might get hurt.
I don't know if anyone here can give me some tips or whatnot- but I find it VERY difficult to come en pointe. I can easily do it at the barre and make multiple exercises, but when it comes to center, doing pique, pirouettes, et cetera, I simply can't get up with a straight leg. Any tips? :(
"very old and still doing pointe". Thanks for your video series. When I first started in Houston, TX, three types of pointe shoes were available. None fit duck feet. There were two Capezio's and one Freed - all long and narrow. It was brutal - blood on my pink satin! One of the two Capezio's had a suede tip, a practical idea that died. But, now, a lot of brands and styles make it so much easier to find "your" shoe. (-Maybe the subject of a new video?) A lot of girls can't afford to sample shoes. I also have worn Blochs for years, but different shoes have different pros and cons. Perhaps you'd get sued though.
For tip number 8, why do you use water? At my studio we use rubbing alcohol because it dries in 2-4 minutes and keeps it soft so the glue won't reharden
i dont dance or do ballet or anything HHAHAHAH i just really wanna wear point shoes and be on points even tho it would hurt and i need years of practice I WANNA TRYYYYY IUEHRUIGHESURIG just me?
question: I’ve joined a new ballet school and as a newer dancer I’m not on pointe and they have suggested going into a class where all the girls are already on pointe for 2+ years and I’m just unsure of what to do? I don’t think I would be ready to go on pointe yet as it’s only my 3rd year
Amazing hacks for pointe shoes!!👍 I will try to do them on my new pointe shoes for my next performance in June!!🙆🙆 I wear Bloch Serenade. Bye from Italy😘😘💕💕
Hi, I own a pair of point shoes and I have a question. Can we break in fake point shoes? Because I don't know if my point shoes are fake or not. Can you please help me.
If the shoes have to be matte then why aren't they just made matte? And why put satin on the tip if it needs to be hacked off? Seems to me pointe shoe makers aren't really doing their jobs too well.
Hi Claudia! I'm from Italy, I love all your videos and this one is sooo helpful and different from any other videos about pointe shoes hacks! Your tips are always really original! Anyway English is not my mother language and there are few words I haven't understood.. can you write me which is the product of the Hack #5 and Hack #9 ? Thank you for everything! Can't wait for the next video!
I enjoy your videos but why in this one do you say that there's wood in pointe shoes? It is such a common misconception by nondancers but ballet dancers should know that pointe shoes are made up of leather, canvas, paste, glue &/or shellac and satin. Please do not perpetuate the myth of wood! Thank you.
Claudia, do. you have any tips for getting up over the box of the pointe shoe? I have terrible, inflexible feet and they don't look pretty on pointe :(
the professional career of a ballet dancer tends to be fairly short. as you get older you tend to lose flexibility, injuries tend to occur and it tends to not be a sustainable career so a lot move on to teaching in their early-mid 30s. some people just generally don't want to perform anymore either. however there are some dancers that perform for decades simply.
Yes Russian pointes are really good especially when you start off en Pointe. I used to have freed for my first pair and my Russian pointes I have now are so much better! good luck
daisydancediva!!!! ! Thank you! My studio does pre pointe which is basically pointe shoes but without wooden shanks so your shank will move easily. I will move up to pointe at the end of summer/fall.
I have a big question- basically heritages have a soft bit of foam stuff in the top of the toes do you pour the pointe shoe glue over that too?? X I’m gluing mine and don’t want to do them wrong 😂 x
I LOVE ballet, and this just gives me even more appreciation for ballet dancers! I can't imagine having to do all of that to shoes I just bought... Also, don't ballerinas go through pointe shoes often? Phew!! lol Like I said- my appreciation is deepened!
Jane Hervilla why is that? I have used Merlet, Bloch and Grishko (the best, In my opinion) but most of the girls in my studio swear by Gaynor Mindens, so I'm thinking of giving them a try when I buy new ones. So, what is wrong with them?
JIPCM rox I started started when I was 11/12... in Russia and France they start when there like 8, I would recommend 11/12 years old depending on grade of ballet
Do you recommend using split sole? I've tried them on and they felt so amazing but I haven't asked anybody with more experience. I've been dancing for a year and practice everyday so I got pointe shoes pretty early (All of my teachers said I was strong enough for them) and now I'm pretty good with pointe work. Thanks to anyone who answers😂
I don't dance. I don't own pointe shoes. I have no idea what she is talking about. But am I still watching this video? Yes.
same lol
same! well I used to ballet when I was younger tho but still

Lmao my pointe shoes were dead after 2 months I don’t know how i lasted with them for 8
I do the water sprayer trick on mine but wear them straight after so the dry and soften to the shape of my foot!!
I do that too! Then it fits perfectly!
I do the spray and then just absolutely squash the shoe and it surprisingly works really well

That was so useful!! I'm hopefully getting on pointe this summer and I've been watching a lot of pointe videos--Your hacks are so good!! I've seen most of them already, but it was nice to have someone actually explain them and show a demonstration 😊👍🏻💗
Thank you so so much Allison xx
😘❤️😍❤️
(i took dance as a young girl, but chose horses!😄)
it seems a ballet dancer getting their first point shoes is like a young horse finally reaching the level in their training when they fitted for their first double bridle. it is a right of passage! much respect for your art! ❤🌹
Great tips! You look great on pointe! You've still got it!
Thanks heaps Kristin xo
Before I go on stage I always use hairspray on the base of my shoes so I don't slip!
I bought a pair of grinshko (nova if i remember well) and they have a 3/4 shank.
Perfect line for my feet but they broke after few lessons 😕
For Hack #10, I usually just wear the tights and put rosin on the heels of my feet over the tights then put my pointe shoes on.
Hi Claudia! If you have more archy feet can you still 3/4 the shank, or will it compromise the support too much?
The longest and the BEST pointe shoes hacks ever! thank you so much Claudia!😙😙
Thanks so much!! xx
I never take the top part of the satin off. My dances have a lot of fouettés and I find it much easier to do with the satin on top intact because it flows better
Where did you buy your shellac. I can't find any that look like that one.
Lizzy Lawton Bloch store online 😃💕
Can you please give some tips for older dancers trying to get their splits!
Hey Alana, my two video's on split leaps (quick tip & how to master) are for all ages xxx
Consider a trip????
don't BLOCH make a 3/4 ?
Sansha do - have done for years…
So you spray water to soften the shoe.... then shellack it to harden it..... same area... just look, it is the same area..... I am confused.
Anna K soften to mold, then shellac to harder then new shape
I love how the pointe shoes are soooo carefully made and dancers literally RIP them apart 😂
Hi! You could put subtitles in Portuguese (Brazil)? I liked very much!
Você poderia colocar legenda em português (Brasil)? Gostei muito!
No wonder professional ballet dancers go through 3 pairs of pointe shoes a day, they destroy half the shoe!
more like 3 a week lol and we dont destroy them, its customizing them to fit us properly so that we dont go through shoes as quickly
Lauren XOX no, its because we work harder than non-professional dancers and other athletes
why can't no one understand its not destroying them its fitting and accommodating only pros like people like us and Claudia would understand
no you’re wrong. the reason why they go through many pairs of shoes a day or a year, it’s because pointe aren’t very strong. if you use just one pair of pointe shoes for a long time, you might get hurt.
pointe shoes aren't strong + they work more than non profs
Can you do a stage makeup video??
Yesss Alexa I've added this idea to the videos list xx
I don't know if anyone here can give me some tips or whatnot- but I find it VERY difficult to come en pointe. I can easily do it at the barre and make multiple exercises, but when it comes to center, doing pique, pirouettes, et cetera, I simply can't get up with a straight leg. Any tips? :(
Yay! new video! Can you please show how you break in your pointe shoes?
I will add that to the video ideas list xo
I love how she is breaking every rule of the pointe shoes
such valuable info!!!! Thank you ! I'm about to get my first pair
i dont dance or do ballet or anything HHAHAHAH i just really wanna wear point shoes and be on points even tho it would hurt and i need years of practice I WANNA TRYYYYY IUEHRUIGHESURIG
just me?
This is so helpful! THANK YOU SO MUCH
THANK YOU for your support!! xx
When you're in your pointe shoes 6/7 days a week. These tips and hacks make a BIG difference :)
ditto and gr8 name for a dancer Ella Best!
question: I’ve joined a new ballet school and as a newer dancer I’m not on pointe and they have suggested going into a class where all the girls are already on pointe for 2+ years and I’m just unsure of what to do? I don’t think I would be ready to go on pointe yet as it’s only my 3rd year
Amazing hacks for pointe shoes!!👍 I will try to do them on my new pointe shoes for my next performance in June!!🙆🙆 I wear Bloch Serenade.
Bye from Italy😘😘💕💕
Hello from Australia!! Thank you so much xx
Hi, I own a pair of point shoes and I have a question. Can we break in fake point shoes? Because I don't know if my point shoes are fake or not. Can you please help me.
Love this video and your others so much !! Just wondering where you got your jumper from ?? Xx
Bridget Halliday Its Bloch & it's so warm !! 😍😍
Can't wait for the next video!
yes please could you write the products
It is rosin in hack #5 and Shellac in hack #9.
Thank you.
instead of cutting the front i like to put some stitches at the edge works amazing and it looks good
Claudia, do. you have any tips for getting up over the box of the pointe shoe? I have terrible, inflexible feet and they don't look pretty on pointe :(
Claudia Dean, you are very young. Why did you stop dancing?
Thank you for your videos!
the professional career of a ballet dancer tends to be fairly short. as you get older you tend to lose flexibility, injuries tend to occur and it tends to not be a sustainable career so a lot move on to teaching in their early-mid 30s. some people just generally don't want to perform anymore either. however there are some dancers that perform for decades simply.
Block shoes feel weird when I go on pointe. YAY GRISHKO!!! (If that's how u spell it which it probably isn't😋)
Early Squad! I love your vids!
Helen love my early squad!!!
im a gymnast i dont know what shes talking about but i still enjoyed the vid kinda
Omg I'm such a big fan! Do you recommend Russian pointes? My studio requires Russian pointes or blochs, whichever is best for our feet.
Chloe 101 pointe shoe shanks are made of cardboard not wood just so you know :)
Sunflower_22 umm real Pointe shoe shanks are made of wood
I wear ulanova II by Grishko. I love them
I have a big question- basically heritages have a soft bit of foam stuff in the top of the toes do you pour the pointe shoe glue over that too?? X I’m gluing mine and don’t want to do them wrong 😂 x
Hi could you please do a video on how to get stronger ankles and higher arches for pointe? Love the hacks in the video ! Xx
What a great suggestion!! I've added that video idea to my videos list x
Anyone else really triggered by the way she is sitting!?
can u do a video on how to get on pointe fast ? like tips and exercises
I'll add this to the video ideas list xox
go to class
pointe shoes aren't made of wood...😐 they're made up of layers of fabric and paste
I wish my mom would have put me into ballet when I was younger
• Coffee • I'm 27 and started ballet only a year ago!
I literally thought she is *SOPHIA THE ROBOT* 😶😯😵
Love this!
thank you Belinda!! xx
Why is this being recommended to me I’ve never danced or searched up dance in my life anyways cool video

I got my first pair of pointe shoes today!!!!! I got Russian Muse!!!!!!!
amazing Video again!! please do a Video about improving pirouettes en pointe
Yess i've added this video to the ideas list xx thank you heaps!
I LOVE ballet, and this just gives me even more appreciation for ballet dancers! I can't imagine having to do all of that to shoes I just bought... Also, don't ballerinas go through pointe shoes often? Phew!! lol Like I said- my appreciation is deepened!
I bought Gaynor Mindens ._. biggest mistake of my life
no offense to people who wear them
Jane Hervilla why is that? I have used Merlet, Bloch and Grishko (the best, In my opinion) but most of the girls in my studio swear by Gaynor Mindens, so I'm thinking of giving them a try when I buy new ones. So, what is wrong with them?
When I use calamine I never find that it does anything weird to my shoes, it actually let's me push over more
hii!
JIPCM rox Hey!!
Claudia Dean Coaching what age is a good age to start pointe?
JIPCM rox I started started when I was 11/12... in Russia and France they start when there like 8, I would recommend 11/12 years old depending on grade of ballet
JIPCM rox I'm 11 and my teacher said 11/12
Savannah Hilder wow I think 8 is too early, what grade did you start?
Do you recommend using split sole? I've tried them on and they felt so amazing but I haven't asked anybody with more experience. I've been dancing for a year and practice everyday so I got pointe shoes pretty early (All of my teachers said I was strong enough for them) and now I'm pretty good with pointe work. Thanks to anyone who answers😂
