@@CANDOKNOWHOW in 1985 a dozen or so red shirts were bought for Jerry by Nora Sage his former housekeeper at a big and tall store. She said he needed a bit of color in his clothing. He wore them until they wore out. Took about 2 years.
@@timharper4246 That’s awesome and hilarious when I think of how people must have kinda tripped out when they noticed the change.. Well, the history certainly has been explained. With that being said, yet another goldie, brother. Keep diggin. The dirt only gets sweeter, the deeper ya get.
As a working musician, ( who's played in Dead cover bands ) I can personally testify that it's actually harder to play slowly, it requires far more discipline. Plus, any mistakes one might make, stand out all the more starkly. Mad props to Jerry...💜🎶✌

My Deadhead friends were like “Watch that SPEED there, Casey Jones. I’m so thankful for people who recognized I was self destructing back then and had the patience to give me space to slow down and breathe a bit, plus the psychedelics saved my life from ruminating over past trauma. If you want to go to church please post My Sisters and Brothers by the Jerry Garcia Band at Shoreline Amphitheatre or any other one but Don't Let Go would be my first choice.Im amazed there have been no reactions to anything from that show. It's the peak of JGB and the band had been together in this particular incarnation for over 10 years. It's the best JGB footage on the web.
I agree with that song. Jamal will love Jerry double live from 91. Has all of that. I saw the Sunday Gospel Revival at Del Fest and Dre Anders and many many guests on stage Kentucky thunder , Gibson Bros , Traveling McCourys , Del, , and everyone else singing eventually got on stage and sang My Brothers and Sisters”it was beautiful. Definitely inspirational and healing happy. I don’t think he’s ready for Don’t Let go yet. But getting there. The frustrating thing about this is Jamal not letting the show just play .. sounds like Spoonful or nobody fault but mine or TOO
Nothing left to do, but smile, smile, smile. Whatcha gonna do. The Dead for all their success never were driven by money. In fact they were very generous. I suggest Jamel, watching the Amazon Prime docu-series, Long Strange Trip. It will help in understanding the different songs and the context, as they would sing about what was happening in their lives. Couple that with all the LSD experimentation and you have some very interesting stories but to song. Life lessons get passed on. Like I have said in the comments in the past....in many ways it was like Church. And sometimes it felt like they were singing directly to you. It gets kinda deep. Appreciate your keeping the music alive and hopefully expanding the fanbase. Peace. Try listening to Bjork, a couple song suggestions: Cocoon, Joga, undo, declare independence, earth intruders....you’ll be glad ya did. Very experimental trip hop, avant-garde, electronic craziness. Enjoy
I read an interview once where Jerry described it like this...later years everything was more consistently better. The highs weren't as high and the lows weren't as low
Yup, I was there! ‘89-‘92 Jerry was on fire!🎸💥 So many great Foxboro memories- The Dead 3 times, once w Dylan, Pink Floyd, The Who. Worst stadium seats ever, but what a great venue anyway. Adam Vinatieri closed it with style!
You were the first reaction guy that I started listening to, when you did Rush, and now that you are officially a Deadhead I love you even more. This is a great version, because when Brent was the keyboard player, him and Jerry had a special "on stage" relationship.
The great thing about Robert Hunter is that he intended a lot of his lyrics to be open to interpretation, and have different meanings for different people. So what you said at the end is good, Listen and find your own meaning,
I love this! You picked a great version to listen to. Thank you for keeping great music alive. I look forward to watching more of your videos ❤️🌵✌🏻 “If you get confused let the music play.”
Jamel, Lenny was Mickey's (one of the drummers) dad. Mickey left the band for a few years after this happened, but ended up coming back in 1974? It was obviously a painful thing that happened, and awesome when Mickey was brought back, because he was part of the band and it wasn't his fault.
Jamal makes the keenest observations....definitely some O'Jays up in this, some grease, a laid back reggae vibe or what? I play this song but don't know what it's time signature is....it's on time but slightly off...behind might be the word and yet grooving right? In the pocket baby! Thanks so much for your contributions to my love and appreciation of music. ✌
One of the official Grateful Dead symbols is Steal Your Face, the lightning bolt skull which was the cover art of the album by the same name. The one on your hat is called the Space Your Face. I met the guy who designed that sometime in 89 or 90 in either Nassau or Albany (Knickerbocker Arena). He got busted selling that on t-shirts at shows for copyright infringement and then Jerry saw the shirts, had the charges dropped and pulled him out of jail and bought the image from him for the wonderful price of tickets for life.
Just love that set of lyrics more and more the older I get. 9 mile skiddin. I also love seeing the women’s shirt being worn with “Hot as a pistol but cool inside “
A few thoughts. First, note that "nothing left to do but smile, smile, smile" is probably the most iconic Dead lyric. Garcia was noted for making eye contact and smiling with people near the stage, and this line always brought a huge round of applause. Second, it is a Robert Hunter song. I didn't literally interpret it the way you did, but the thing to note is this: You're not quite sure exactly what he is talking about, but you know exactly what he means. Third, and this is a major LOL moment - when they start the vocal jam, and you, Jamal, say "do it one more time." All the Dead Heads are laughing, because they know the are going to do not just one more time, but for 3 or 4 minutes. Keep up the good work. You want a reaction, listen to the original Live/Dead recording of St. Stephen - the opening guitar work ....!!!! I remember the first time I heard this - play it loud - you will have a REACTION!

Smile baby...SMILE! Jamel's got some more Dead on the plate. What a great ending on this one. They were grovin' hard in the late 80's early 90's just before Brent died.
You should check out the grateful dead documentary on Amazon prime. It’s called “long strange trip.” Great doc and lots of cool stories and footage across the dead’s history which should fill you in on their legacy.
It presents one interpretation, yes. But there are many Deadheads who dispute one of the film's central messages; namely, that fame killed Jerry and somehow his fans were partly responsible for his addictions and death. I thought that was bullshit in 1995 and I still think so (and yes, I've said as much to the director of Long Strange Trip).
@@kra147durham I’d definitely agree that full truth of the bands history is more complicated than one documentary (that interviews some slightly biased people) can convey. Just thought it might be useful for Jamal so that he gets sort of a general overview of how the bands members changed over the years, there big moments - stuff like that. Plus you can’t deny that the footage and stories are really cool. For a more balanced perspective that’s a bit less jerry-centric I would recommend bobs documentary “the other one” or Phil’s book “searching for the sound.” Peace ✌🏻

I grew up on the dead from 1968 to 1974. It’s really cool how you are getting it keep up the good work ❤
Check out "Wharf Rat" or "Jack Straw"
I think you might be on to something there. Couple of the best imo. But, what would JackStraw know?
Two great songs. Put Terrapin Station in with that duo and you've got yourself a perfect trifecta.
@@jackstraw8145 Jackstraw would know what Althea told him.
@@themersh4064 I'm not 100% sure what she told me or maybe "I don't need to cool down boy." But, I do know that "I told Althea that treachery was tearing me limb from limb."
How about Billy Strings doing "Warf Rat"!
My young brother, I love your enthusiasm for the Grateful Dead! You have sparked a new interest in a band that I put aside for a while. Thank you
I've never head this version of He's Gone before and it's immediately become my favorite version so far. Brent and Bobby at the end with the backup vocals were so great!
Try 9-22-91 too. Super long wind-out.
The joy watching this with you is immeasurable. Bless you. Blow Away 07/07/89 by brother Brent is such church.
Dooooooooooodddd. That 7-7-89 blow away. The Brent/jerry connection is magic. White magic.. I l9ve them all but Brent shows out.
@@FODteambrotha you already know! For all Heads check out 04/02/90 Brent is drizzling keys all over the recording
ruclips.net/video/DRMJDcVSyro/видео.html that althea tickles my manly parts.
@@FODteam you had me at Althea.
@@mediaholic07 i got lucky and saw mickey and vince. Thats all of the band i saw back in the day at nelson ledges. Ive been to a dead n co show. Its alright but not my scene. At any rate, shit. Im rambling. Never miss a sunday show.
You're family now, for sure, you know some of our dirty laundry!! :) Two iconic phrases in this song that endure in Dead lore to this day, "Steal Your Face" (that's a "Stealie" on your hat) and "Nothing left to do but smile, smile, smile!". As for Jerry wearing the "same outfit" it became pretty much standard. The dude must have had 200 black, short sleeve t shirts! One good thing about checking off a "reaction song" is that now you can go listen to as many other versions as you want! And there are many great ones! Here's one from Europe 72, with Pig still alive and Jerry playing "Alligator". Notice the difference in
tempo.....ruclips.net/video/yOTWLpSUBM8/видео.html
Agree- the '72 versions are amazing.
There was the short trouble ahead jerry in red period back in 85-86-87 i think it was
@@LSD19966 What was the red period?
Love Dead lore, still just learning as I go..
Like, the spinner girls must’ve been all about it, but people close to Jerry heard “Yeah, she decided to get some red ones this time, so I’m just rolling with that, I figure”. Lol
This was one of my requests!!! Sooooo glad you got to it.
Thanks Jamel!!!
Each Dead song conjures its own entire world.
I’d recommend going for more 70’s live stuff for sure! They were on a whole different level in like 72-74! 78 - 80 was super solid too!
I second that emotion!
I dont know where all these later era requests are comin from but why wouldnt you want to hear Jerry in his prime?
Odd you skipped over 1977, one of their best years by any metric.
77 was like a midnight get away
Totally agree. Europe 72 version is sooo much better.
To Lay Me Down Fl. 74
Well, the history certainly has been explained. With that being said, yet another goldie, brother. Keep diggin. The dirt only gets sweeter, the deeper ya get.
Love their version on Europe’72.
There are few guitarists who are willing to play as slowly as Jerry. Slow Jerry may be an acquired taste, but it's certainly worth acquiring.
As a working musician, ( who's played in Dead cover bands ) I can personally testify that it's actually harder to play slowly, it requires far more discipline. Plus, any mistakes one might make, stand out all the more starkly. Mad props to Jerry...💜🎶✌
Ain't no flavor like it!
There is slow, and then there is Jerry slow. Complex, deep and haunting. Some of my favorites: China Doll, Stella Blue, He's Gone, as geez there's too many. Summer '89 was just too good as well. Such thick and polished sound.
Thank you for this comment!!
This is something I’ve believed a long time and what lured my interest in contrast to all the punk rock noise I was making when I first learned to play. My Deadhead friends were like “Watch that SPEED there, Casey Jones.
I’m so thankful for people who recognized I was self destructing back then and had the patience to give me space to slow down and breathe a bit, plus the psychedelics saved my life from ruminating over past trauma.
Big medicine..
The frustrating thing about this is Jamal not letting the show just play .. sounds like
Spoonful or nobody fault but mine or TOO
Had so much fun at this show.. shakedown was poppin and the music was electrifying :)
Remember the choppers flying around the parking lot after the show?
Enjoy
Bob Weir cites 1989 as one of the Dead's best years. I think he joked they were finally getting good ... something like that.
I read an interview once where Jerry described it like this...later years everything was more consistently better. The highs weren't as high and the lows weren't as low
89 was my fave year! Bobby w ponytail pink shirts n his short shorts and Jerry & Brent just grooving together. Loved that summer!!!
Was at those Foxboro shows. As well as ten years sitting on those crummy bleachers (Section 125) for the Pats.
Man, you picked up on what that song is about right quickly!
So what you said at the end is good, Listen and find your own meaning,
There is no debate on a at least few songs meanings. This one for certain and another is China Cat Sunflower.
So much to explore, Stella blue, wharf rat,let it grow and so on💖
Jes done a few. Welcome dude. This cats alright. Check his stuff.
@@FODteam oh I've been following for about a year now,it'll take years to get through the dead,so many good ones😊
@@furthurdead81 yeah. Decades of shows. Never two of the same setlist but for i think its two times, maybe thrice.

I love this! You picked a great version to listen to. Thank you for keeping great music alive. I look forward to watching more of your videos ❤️🌵✌🏻
“If you get confused let the music play.”
It was a great show. One of the best versions of this song. He’s gone but the music lives on forever!
Amazing band they got hurt yet they " smile, smile smile"
I was THERE, 18 yrs old , Grateful to say I'm still Dead every day!!!
He's Gone and done it now! Grate tune my friend! ;)
I love that you love the lyrics so much!
9 mile skid on a 10 mile ride, hot as a pistol but cool inside
Nine mile skid.
I was literally thinking other day "maybe I should suggest 'He's Gone'
Great song man. Another good one is "when I paint my masterpiece" stay safe man thanks for the share. I see you are still on the bus, always good folks on the bus! Have a grateful day!
Please, please, please react to St. Stephen, Uncle John's Band, Sugar Magnolia. ☮💜

High time, Cumberland Blues, Tennessee Jed, still so many great Dead tunes for Jamel to react to.
Would love to see Europe 72 version of Cumberland Blues. I was really hoping this request would be for the Europe 72 version.
Jamal the world needs more of you!! Peace and love!! Love live Dead
I figured you’d like the “Steal your face” line. That’s probably one of the most iconic Grateful Dead terms of phrase, it’s also how we refer to the band’s logo, we refer to it as a Stealie.
Thanks Jamal! Music is the way!
Jamel love your channel if you have not reacted to Blood, Sweat, & Tears please do. Songs: Spinning Wheels, You make me so very happy, I love you more than you'll ever know. Great band, brass section is very tight.

Hell...react to all the Grateful Dead songs...let’s gooooooo! Love it man - keep on Truckin...
Micky Hart, the drummer's father was the Dead's manager for a time...he stole a whole bunch of the ticket money from a big show...then took off....'He's Gone' came shortly after.....grate tune.
You always pick the best versions of these Dead tunes!
The “original “version from Europe 72 is one of the best...much different
Yes, a much better and more fun version than this.
100% I had a great moment on a sunny hot summer day getting back from a long bike ride climbing the last hill and I just completely clicked with that song in a way I can't describe. I love that Europe 72 album.
Imo the veneta version is better
Edie Folta ...The best part of this version is Bobby
Heard these songs a million times, but you always help me see something fresh in the lyrics.
The version from Veneta Oregon for the Springfield Creamery benefit in 1972 is absolutely fire!
Great show. Would love to here the Playing in the Band from that show.
The atmosphere they could create...they could change the weather.
I love when you do The Dead. ☮️💙
‘89 was a great year. Keep up the great content!
The version from Europe 72' is amazing.
I love this, it is like getting to hear the music that moved me for so many years for the first time. Thank You!
Highly recommend you checking out the Europe '72 version of this classic tune as well. Or Veneta, OR 8/27/72.
For a more balanced perspective that’s a bit less jerry-centric I would recommend bobs documentary “the other one” or Phil’s book “searching for the sound.”
Peace ✌🏻
