    Big newbie here *raises hand*
    I got the opportunity to play with several master level people, and got a lot of interesting advice (pretty much all of this lol), but one piece of advice I got that REALLY helped me, as a really really newbie player, was to always practice execution on both sides of the screen. Everything I can pull off facing the left side of the screen, I have to do it just as well facing the right side of the screen. As a Manon player, I am in very big doo doo if I accidentally slap the other player instead of slamming them on the ground because I couldn't do a proper half-circle in the other direction.

    If you want motivation to start reviewing your replays, think of it like this. To get ahead you have to do what most people won't.This would be a big advantage because many others dont use this tool in their toolkit.

    Another one is "switching off" and just having fun. If your getting frustrated just taking a breath and playing for fun can get you off the tilt of constantly trying to improve .... be better... level up.. play perfect... just taking time to remember why your playing in yhe 1st place can help so much.

    That’s a really cool way of looking at your own replays. Like, study yourself like you would an opponent - how would they beat me, what aspects do I need to shore up on, etc.

    Solid content. Definitely agree that watching your on videos is humbling, but necessary if you really want to start seeing your own habits and learning to recognize when someone's caught on to something you're doing repeatedly. And once you understand that you DO have habits, you'll be able to recognize them quicker as you're in a match once you notice your opponent starting to adapt to your actions.

    I noticed my biggest improvement in SFV when I recorded my matches on my phone and watched them at work. I picked up on so many bad habits I had no idea about.

    One thing I recently realized that I sucked at is Risk-Reward. How often should I play it safe vs take a risk? When are the risky options worth it (teching, DI, reversal)? How does that change for different phases of the game (if I am in the corner, low on life, have a lead etc.)? At what points do I shift between making decisions based on risk reward vs making a read? I would love to hear anyone’s thoughts.

      i feel that it really depends on your certain situation. it's not as black and white and "you should take a risk here" or "you should aim for reads there" as it changes up many times during a set. Instead of asking yourself "how often should I take a risk vs play it safe" you should be focusing on what you've been doing or been planning to do onto your opponent and how have they reacted to it? Watching how your opponent reacts to what you do should give you the answer to when you should take a risk vs play it safe. Consciously being aware of what you want to do and aim to accomplish and seeing what your oppents does in turn to react to it should allow you to make a better decision.

      A lot of it is going to be based on your opponent to see how often they shimmy or go for throws etc. If they never shimmy, DP will most likely hit. Also don't try to be super aggressive when your opponent has very low health because that's when they're the most desparate. So if you get a knockdown watch out for wakeup supers.

    Execution. I dont know what it is but i dont like the lab. When i boot up the game id rather just jump into matches or play long sets with friends. But yeah you guys are right, ive had so many close matches where if i would have dumped some bar into a combo i could have closed out the round.

      I think most people don't like the lab. It's like in school doing the scientific method. You need to prep and calculate before the experiment, but most people just wanted to do the funny experiment.

      Try to go to the Lab with your friends. Its actually way more fun to Explore the game together

      Learn some simple combos for different situations. Doesn't have to be super optimized, but a meaty with a low/overhead, a hard punish (to punish DP/counter DI). Once u see yourself doing the combos in the scenarios u prepared for I'll enjoy the Lab much better

    Execution is a major part of all of it to be fair. Knowing your combos and when and where to use them makes your neutral game 100x more deadly.
    Combos are the reason i play fighting games these days. Always go to using the most excentric cool factor combos that are almost always not worth the effort in terms of efficiency😂

    Bro i lost it at 6:10 that dhalsim corner combo was insane. That damage and it was scaled off of a wall stun. I couldn’t even hear what was being said in the background anymore lol

    I feel like the problem with focusing on combo first, is that you'll lose sight on the neutral.
    In my opinion having a grasp of the neutral first is the priority. Knowing which button to press and when, and getting a feel of the ranges and timing comes first. There's no point having a good combo when you don't know how to set it up. Also identify what behavior is safe or not. Take notes when you get punished for a certain action.
    edit : That said, learning anti-air moves comes with learning the neutral, since everyone will be jumping at you at low rank unless you dissuade them. The other side of the coin is, don't get tempted to jump. Get used to staying on the floor and force yourself to get through having to get the distances right for your normal attacks.
    The second thing would be identifying among the things that you connect in neutral, which ones can be converted into a combo. That's when combos come into play and become important (in my experience it starts to become a prerequisite at platinum 1). Learn to use the combos in their context. At low level, you can win fights only with neutral and punishing unsafe moves.
    SF6 rank system is great in that sense. You'll be matched with people that have approximately the same amount of knowledge as you. You won't get punished with a 60% health combo when getting hit in neutral against an iron or bronze, you'll both have time to get a feel of the neutral in battle.
    I understand Jwong's point of view, in old games you often got matched up with people that would recite all of their moves on you. In SF6, you can take the time to learn things one step at a time. And I know because I started at Iron myself and not at like Diamond (which usually is the starting point for people like Jwong who already know what they're doing from the beginning).

    nr. 1 thing that helped me to jump from silver to plat, was the the DI Training in training mode, 1h of it. Now i know my safe moves and it helped me so much improving.

    One thing I notice about myself is that sometimes its better to confirm the end of the round than to go with something flashy. Can't tell you how many times I hit my opponent in burn out, and a simple grab can end the game. Instead I try to do a flashy combo, drop it, and then end up losing lmao. Yea its a skill issue but sometimes ive learned, just take the win when its there

    My advice.
    STOP jumping.
    Ask yourself, why are you jumping.
    If the answer is "im trying to hit him" youre jumping into a dp
    You will beat so many people just by not jumping and anti airing

      Try practicing anti air crossups as well. Its usually a half circle backwards for characters. People who like using this for pressure will be shutdown.

      Ive been using cammy as one of my mains in sf6 and she has like 5 anti airs (DP, Cr.HP, back MP, back HK, and air throw) and i part of me messing up is having analysis paralysis over which one to use. Some such as back HK loses often to certain characters. being able to anti air consistently is super important as other wise people can get in your face for free so easy. As soon as i figure out my opponent rarely anti airs its like a switch flips and i just abuse it lol. Make me stop basically.

      @evilweevle For the most part(when I can lol) I opt for either DP or back MP. I think back HK is a little risky of an anti. 😅

    The watch replay one is too funny. Many of times the next day I’m like “oooo I know I did some slick shit in this match” I watch it and the whole match was a just til that point. 😂

    I think for me the hardest part is hit confirming. For example when I jump kick and if it hits, I shouldnt try to throw since that's not optimal. I should start a combo. It's the hardest for me because you need good reactions to do something like this.

      There is a training more for this and some characters have more hit confirm options without meter

      Set block to random in training. You’ll quickly see that the block stun pauses just enough that you can make the distinction. I just mastered this about two weeks ago

    the moment i started to drop less combos instantly catapulted my rank ahead. Before i would drop combos constantly because i wasn't sure of the correct combo route and they were always too committal in resources so i fumbled them a lot and when i did i was in a really bad spot with no meter and no drive gauge. Cashing out damage consistently and managing drive gauge was literally transforming my gameplay. suddenly i could pressure my opponent for burnout or use lvl 3 in a strategic way which i never did before.

    When I started to dp anti-air opponents consistently in silver-gold rank, I felt like a god. It gave me confidence to learn more in sf6. Now I am plat. Still bad but hey I improved.

    My issue is understanding the timing between execution. Unlike in Mk1 it helps you with the timing and makes it easier to understand. In sf6 I'm not even sure if I'm timing it too quickly or late.

    Idk about yall, but Im new to fighting games, SF6 being my 2nd and GGST my first and as a grappler (Pot and Gief). I barely labbed, mostly just for the inputs. The biggest times I saw improvement was just watching a master at the character (FAB and Snake) then just slowly incorporate what they do into my gameplay. You dont have to reinvent the wheel when someone else has done it for you.

      I do similar with my characters. I watch their replays and call decisions before they are made. This confirms whether I am on the right track with my choices. Combo ideas are an obvious tool, however ive learned more from watching their spacing and approach in general. My habit is being too aggressive at times, im learning to pick the right times to go all in etc.

    Execution is such a big deal. It’s a simple concept but not easy. Optimizing my openings on offence in abstract situations is what took me to the next level with the characters I play.

    Number 5 : depends at what level your are playing. I managed to get to Platinum without knowing how to do big combo my only punish (Ryu) until plat was HP/HK and my only combo was Jab/Jab/Tatsu or DP

    I feel like Jwong tip about execution could be misinterpreted. As a beginner don't need optimal execution to punish ur opponent. But u need a decent punish so he feels, in fact, well... punished and stop doing random shit

    I've always tried to watch my replays but I still don't understand WTF is happening. Really wish I could find a way to understand.

      just look for repeated patterns that often get you into trouble or cause you to take heavy damage (such as not anti airing enough, dropped combos, being shimmied repeatedly) and think of the solution so it doesnt happen as much (practice execution, practice anti airs, dont throw tech as much.)
      You can also look for times when you could have won a round easily but either lost, or you needed to take away a small pixel of life from them to close the win (im guilty of this and ive been playing for a long ass time now). Perhaps those times you just needed to spend a bar of super meter or cash out your entire drive gauge for that little bit of extra damage. Or perhaps your opponent is in burnout and so chip damage from a super or a special move will get the win.
      I wouldnt worry about finding every single mistake you make because everyone does it. A player who makes no mistakes will never lose. Just look for the ones that occur the most often to start with. I used to eat so much damage from trying to tech throws and my opponents figured that out and would wreck me. I just learned to not panic and take the throw more often and i stopped losing as much.
      It takes a critical eye to be able to fix these problems and also discipline to stick to the plan during a match and not let bad habits take over again.

      The best thing if you’re starting out is to set the block option to “Block after First Hit”. That will help you learn what’s a combo and what’s not.

    What I don't get is that a 4f normal on block, is minus, but it beat your opponent 4f attempt after block. It makes no sense.

      Certain moves can be "cancelled" into others, effectively negating their recovery frames. Many lights can be cancelled into themselves or other lights, meaning that even if a single light is technically minus, two right in a row might not have a big enough gap that it can be interrupted.

    Rank seems impossible I've been fighting all night and even today just to get out of silver 2 and I just now got to silver 3 and now im demoted because I lost to a modern guile constantly spamming sonic boom. ranked is impossible and isn't balanced. just can't win a game

    Tip for Playstation players: turn cross play off. Playing with PC players just means you're playing with people who will have a clear advantage over you, especially if they're using some high def monitor. I turned cross play off and my experience is so much better.

      Just get an OLED TV. It's pretty much the same as playing on a computer monitor. I play on PS5 and OLED is awesome while LED TV is absolute garbage for fightning games.
