I hit Ogoshi quite often during Krav Maga sparring. Go to the clench and Tie up the opponents power hand with an over hook, throw right hooks to their head, when they go to cover up your right arm goes around the waste and throw. I realize that isn't a judo scenario but for those looking to find opportunities to use judo in self defense this is one example that I have found works in free sparring. Yes there are ways the opponent can prevent the throw by doing a body lock etc., if they do it but many times their first instinct is to cover. Even those who have fallen for this move before I've managed to repeat it.

In all Shintaro's technique breakdowns he tends to point our what will prevent the throw from happening, usually the opponent having a strong grip that prevents you getting close or applying the leverage you need. That's the defence.
Beyond that the counter is learn Judo (or Japanese Jiujutsu). There are techniques as you advance to counter these techniques. Randori teaches you this skill as you and your opponent are mutually trying to throw each other and someone is going to gain the upper hand.

It created a big stir asking the other "Masters" and we proceeded to have a big debate that lasted a month. During that time, the owner called me over to demonstrate it on me for the assistant training class, and it didn't work. The debate was settled when the original Master of the school was with us and confirmed everything i was saying.
It was things like that that made me decide to leave the school.

@@mmongiello722 It is a Taekwondo thing unfortunately... The rank of Master is earned at 4th Degree black belt according to Kukkiwon. And Kukkiwon is the largest martial arts belt certifier in the world (which isn't saying much right now). I did receive a 4th degree in tkd, so techniqualy the students were required to call me master as well (despite my protest).
Interesting story, we were invited as an instructor and staff group to a jujitsu gym. I had taken jujitsu for a couple months at my local university, so had a uniform and white belt. When we met at our gym to carpool, I had shown up with my gi and white belt on. The other master instructors had their special instructor uniforms on, and were wearing their black belts. The older instructors looked at me in shock, saying things like, "I earned this black belt, and you can't take that from me." The younger staff (Not masters) decided to take their black belts off.
So we showed up at the gym and the instructor comes out with white belts for everyone to put on. The look on their faces was priceless!
Anyway, I'm starting my own gym now. Not a TKD gym. And I am not using the title of Master. I'm sticking with coach.

The line between some of these Ogoshi and a Tsuri-Goshi are quite blurred.... but essentially they are very similar. I just think that if you already have that underhook grip on the belt, most of the time the opponent will be prepared for Ogoshi, so you will end up doing Tsuri-goshi or something different entirely.

In general, you can't force a throw if the other guy wants to be thrown by something else. ;-)
Otherwise, try to put downwards pressure on the other guy. If he doesn't resist, he will end up in turtle position. He will get a penalty for that in judo, in bjj you might then go for the back.
If he resists, try to loosen him by reaping up and pushing down, together with some foot throws. When you offbalance the other one, you may find a short time where he is sufficiently upright. If he really wants to stay in this position, go for sumi gaeshi instead.
