So to recap 3 different methods for dealing with stiff arm judoka: 1. Pull forward to break kizushi, then attack 2. Switch to bow and arrow grip, then attack bad side 3. Double lapel, force opponent to bend elbows, then get sleeve grip and attack Hope I got this right!
Meeting of the minds, love this guys. As I started getting older, I have transitioned into BJJ and mainly during covid BJJ are the only schools open at this point... but I miss Judo dearly. Seeing these two greats together fusing their knowledge is fantastic.
Coming from a BJJ background, I got so much [deserved] crap for stiff-arming when i trained judo! Judo became a lot more fun when I loosened up and committed to throws even though i got thrown a lot more.

Next video idea: Shintaro reacts/reviews some of his old videos (specifically the instructionals) and talk about how he would teach them differently now!
Only just started Judo...white belt. But yep this is a question you want to know. My club has a lot of other white belts who are tense and stiff as hell in randori
I find de ashi works well with the stiff arm because they are so focused on stopping u turning in. I move a combo of backwards and sideways to make them take a couple of usually heavy steps because they are so stiff and when the time is just right sweep the lead foot and boom ipon 💪
I was taught to use the opponent’s force against them so they almost throw themselves rather than fight against them, after all judo was designed to give the smaller weaker person an advantage
The thing to remember about standing randori is that even novices are blue belts in standing. all of our instincts protect us from falling in a way that in newaza or ground fighting people have no prepared instincts for stopping someone take your back. stiff arm is also instinctive and so it can be surprisingly hard to throw a strong novice. not least because you dont want to be too rough. these are good techniques and as a self defence method, the skill of dominating balance and grip is more important than say having a good maki or drop knee.
I was a shodan and in my black belt test I threw another black belt candidate opponent who weighted 40 pounds heavier than me. I was only 16 years old and 118 pounds while he was around 22. Instead of letting him grab my lapel easily and fought to position him for a Ippon Seonage. As he grabbed my lapel, I pulled his other arm ( left) and trapped it under his right arm as I moved into my throw which was perfectly performed for an “ ippon.” I don’t know why people say you have problems with no gi situations. I have no need to use clothing for leverage. As those who really train under the Japanese, we have very strong grips and body strength; and if an opponent moves to attack us, the rest is easy. Welcome to the floor! ( most experienced judo fighters move slowly so as to never lose their weight distribution when fighting. They only become vulnerable except when they themselves go in to attack.)
I love the channel! I always get meaningful insight that I can really apply. One of the arts I practice is aikido and we incorporate a fair amount of jujitsu and judo throws. Incidentally- I noticed a change in your belt. Reason? 😎
His partner in the video is a BJJ black belt. I believe that he wears his black belt when practicing BJJ and his coral belt (red / white) when practicing Judo. I'm not sure I'm correct, but I had the same question and this is the answer that came to mind.
I have 4 years of judo and 2 years for wrestling. I’m now training for BJJ and what he is explaining in the beginning is very true. I have such a upper hand with when it comes to the standing game. Most moves I do are very basic but knowing the technique to them helps alot. I was able to take down my sensei and a brown belt last week with no problems with a simple leg sweep and hip toss.
Great video! I train 4 days a week. But I train for the street, as I work in security. I see lots of straight arm (jigity) and I find it hard t deal with. We do train for it, but I'm not finding much success so I will be trying these techniques tomorrow. Thank you again!

I’d Just step back and pull down so he gets a shift for a false drop but I’m not sure if would work for you - don’t really know your situation, but I hope I helped
@@augerbrownjr8327 you gave a good answer. If you want someone to do something while grappling (also when striking, i guess) you need to fake something. You can also try to push them down if you sre close enough, so they will try to get up with all their strenght to counter push you upwards, this is when you stop pushing, take a quick step back and go into your throw of choice.
Well in competitions (at least in France) if you stay stiff armed you'll earn shido's like crazy and may end up just being disqualified. But there's a few techniques, I liked to do sode against that by grabbing both sleeves with a ouchi/ kouchi reaction to break the distance
I liked the vid, it's lenght, the situation adressed, the number of options offered, the techniques and effectiveness of the solutions and the simple explanations. What I really love is that Brazilian Jiu Jitsu has a lightning fast way to beat the stiff arm: as you initiate what we call "mão de vaca" the experienced fighter will immediately change the stiff arm. If it is not an experienced fighter that doesn't know what's going on he will be finished in the next seconds.
Great video! What do you think about this counter? ruclips.net/video/WTBzORASqm4/видео.html It has worked exceptionally well in BJJ. This is an older video and we have polished it up a lot since then🤙
It really depends. If they have you with their other hand in certain ways, you will not able to do such, and even if they are not controlling you with their other hand there's also the problem of trying to pull them off balance first, which can be hard. But yes, yes you might be able to do it even if they are (weakly) controlling you with their other hand, i have only done it against inexperienced grapplers tho, so i do not recomend it against a decent one.
IJF also forbids passivity, i.e. stiff arming; the problem that is described in the beginning is directed to BJJ practitioners trying to throw against a stiff arm

Actually I dont think breaking grips is allowed in judo any more. Any makikomi throw works great against stiff arms and so does several other throws, the trick is not breaking the grip but understanding that it only prevents a direct entry and immediate foot sweeps. Try rotating around the stiff arm and you will notice that it is quite easy to develop attacks that rotate into your opponent if you do not try to move their arm.
