I didn't think Judo or Jujitsu would be practical for me because my cerebral palsy makes it nearly impossible to pick people up, but I like a lot of these takedowns. I'm studying Tang Soo Do. I can move well, and my hands are kind of fast. I chose karate because I need something for people who can overpower me. I LOVE martial arts! Love you too, Uncle Shintaro! Love my Aunt, too!❤️❤️❤️
Osoto gari is one of those moves that every year I get a little better at. Your in depth video helps tremendously for this deceptively difficult move. Thanks!
2:45 I never laughed so hard at a someone taking a throw before. That look afterwards was priceless. Spit out my coffee. Love your videos. Watch them with my daughter all the time. And implement what we learn in our jujitsu training. Thanks.
4:05 when your brain starts to register and process the damage to your nervous system and articulations from 2:45 throw and comes to your mind the meme voice of katy perry "when you tell people you are fine, but you are not fine" and you realize there are still a long road to the end
Don't forget the first full speed throw at 0:45. I giggled my head off at the look on Lara's face, poor girl. "Was that hard?" Ha ha her squeaked reply.
Thanks, Shintaro! I was just thinking about learning this technique more. I really appreciate your in-depth videos, they help me out alot! Also props to Lara for getting ragdolled
In my bjj class we usually start our fights standing up. We do practice judo takedowns but not enough to be good at them. We usually end up just going for instictive wrestling-like leg takedowns, but i just wish we knew the judo ones better. The times I've been taken down with those I didn't know what hit me. Just the floor crashing against me without previous notice.
One of the best videos on this channel! I can't really tell if Lara is having a fun time getting thrown around or not. But either way hopefully she endures it for all of the educational opportunities :D
It's unfortunate that judo is more prevalent. Where do you live if you don't mind me asking? Sometimes you can find a bjj gym that has some stand up aspects to it as well.
Thanks again for the video Shintaro! O soto gari is one of my tokui waza but it definitely took a lot of time, studying, and practice to get it there. Such a deceptively complex technique.
Shintaro could you do sasae in the same context and detail as o soto as my Grandsons judo style is marinated in your concepts. The detail in this vid would have made some of the training elements so much easier.
I am a blue belt judoka, I teach basic course for juniors under 15 years. We have this unspoken rule "do NOT teach O-soto-gari to white belts until a week before belt graduation". Why? Because it is a really easy concept to learn, but almost impossible for the kids to get right. After they have learned to take that step, they'll hook uke's leg - without proper kuzushi and too little control on upper body. From that day forward, they are stuck with that throw on every randori and they'll get countered in competitions. So, we stopped doing that. I think O-soto feels the least risky technique to try as you don't have to commit yourself so much to it by turning your back to the opponent. I actually teach O-soto-gari WITH it's counters on the same day, so they can understand the risk of not doing it properly. Also, they will counter opponents that did not get the memo.. Remember, they are ages 8-14, I am not saying they are stupid - but they kinda are anyway. :D
I love the content. I started judo about 6 weeks ago and this channel is outstanding for all the tips I miss in class. I have 1 question, why does every judo sensei only teach the actually throw part all full Olympic speed
Thank you very much again for providing so much great and in-depth but still to the point content! I love Osoto Gari, it is my favorite throw and i am thrilled to watch the video! (:
Oss sensei Shintaro thank you so much for the knowledge, it could be possible a video about the basic stands of Judo I mean the properly way to balance weight from stand position to prejections and the basic way foots should be line up with the hips for the trows?
I figured somebody would be sleeping on the couch after this little demonstration! But I do love osoto gari when I can pull it off (I'm not a Judoka, but I've tried to pull some of these techniques into my karate classes for a change of pace). Thanks a bunch for the excellent videos!
drill it slow on a neutral uke. do a lot of nage Komi. start slow. hard to help without seeing where you are going wrong. But this is the best advice I can give with what I got. :-)
I love so much about this video, and also so much about the video is hilarious to me lol> #1- The girlfriend/ fiancé/ wife, is SOOOOOOOOOOOOO prissy and feminine (which I absolutely LOVE in women), but with her....shes so much of it, that it's actually hilarious to me lol. Every time I see her in these vids, I just cant stop smiling or laughing, at her movements and mannerisms...LMAO. (but again, I love it.........which I say with the utmost respect and platonic-ness lol). #2- She actually has VERRRRY good breakfalls!! #3- Shitaro eventually knocks the Hair ball/ hair puff off of or out of, her hair lol, via these big and beautiful Judo throws lol. I don't even notice exactly when it happened, I just eventually looked up and noticed the hair ball was now gone LOL. #4- I love Shitaro's skills and teaching, and this video just displays it again #5- Shitaro has finally cut the long hair, to a short hair cut, and is now ready for battle/ war lol. According to my criteria and ideology. Which is that anytime I see any males with even remotely long hair, I instantly know they're not really ready for battle/ war, and aren't even thinking of it. Why? Because they can be the most talented fighter or warrior, and all it takes is for their opponents or enemies to grab their hair, and now they're in trouble and in serious risk of being defeated, killed, etc. So, now Shitaro has removed that tremendous liability and is ready for battle/ war. 👍
Ouchi -> Osoto looks like money. I’ve been trying to adapt Osoto in no-gi, but approaching it with no gi grips is so fucking challenging, especially when good wrestlers won’t just give you that cheesy collar tie osoto you see on so many RUclips tutorials when you type “no-gi Osoto Gari.” I’ve been hitting that Ouchi from the under-hook with success so I might try to combo into that cross body Osoto the next time I’m in no gi... 😈
Oh, stop crying and adapt. Leg grabs are included in Kodokan list of techniques, so of course every dojo will teach them at some point. Kani-basami and Do-jime are taught as well, despite being forbidden in competitions.
OWWWWW poor cute little girl, crying cuz the big bad osoto gari threw her :( Luckily simptaro went easier on her after that :) lol You can't tell right away everyone goes easy on her, that doesn't help her, she needs to realize that someday 🤦♂️
Her face after the first throw🤣🤣🤣🤣 “ what the f have I agreed to? “
She has a black belt so I'm sure she's used to it and knows how to fall.

My pleasure!
The best counter to Osoto Gari is Osoto Gari...learned that fact this morning when I attempted one while sparring.
Excellent analysis of an iconic throw!!!!

Good tip about stiff arm, I was circling but this explosive option is way better. Take care and thank´s.

I've always wanted to learn judo but there are no classes near my place :( I really love watching your videos though. Helps me understand the basics
It's unfortunate that judo is more prevalent. Where do you live if you don't mind me asking? Sometimes you can find a bjj gym that has some stand up aspects to it as well.
yea, judo is painful and a lot more risk. Hope you can get some martial arts where you are,

For sure. im not that mobile or flexible, but I will put it on my list.
Thank you!!!!
Nice video, hiza guruma in depth would be pretty interesting
Thanks Lara!
Wonderful detailed explanations, thank you. Wish I had this level of detail when I was training.
Minute 3:58 I guess she was afraid to fall again on the ground when he said BOOM, he spared her this time. She is so cute.
10:48 Oh, god. :D
Excellent advices. All of them are useful and very appliable. Next time Lara is tori.

Sure thing
Just awesome as always. Thank you for dissecting it. The devil is in the details. Stay safe.
Peace.
I think she's feeling it. Tough woman. I wouldn't expect any less from a Judo black belt, man or woman.
There are at least as many variations when Uke is the smaller person, an when they are equal in height...
Lara's "-oh god" could easily be sampled into a scrillex-song 10:48
What do you mean rolling the shoulder. I’ve heard you say it a few times. Is it your right arm you’re referring too?
i’m a white belt and i’m realllllly good at it

How do you feel about harai goshi seonage grip setting up the osoto gari?
I think that is a great idea.
the right vs left looks more like Osoto Gake. If not, how do I tell the difference
gari is reap, gake is more like hook. semantics. Either or is okay, they are both osoto family :-)
Can you please help me I am struggling with correctly applying enough force, I think I am not efficient with using my hands to bring uke into me.

What if opponent lifts the front leg in time? Do you pull them into outer wheel (O soto guruma)?
Or transition into a ouchi gari perhaps?
can force it still or transition Tani otoshi.
