I heard someone say that the book makes you feel all the emotions at once. I laughed at them, until I read the book. John Green did it again.

honestly i thought the book was completely over-hyped. which i almost don't want to say, because i have huge amounts of respect for john green, but i was just expecting the book to be better. it was clever and witty at parts, but i also think a lot of the book conformed to typical teen fiction writing styles and scenarios, which i was hoping wouldn't happen. it was a good book, it just wasn't great.

I read this book on my four hour bus ride to Indianapolis for my choir... and then on the way back. I had the worst headache of my life, because while I was reading, lights were flashing over the page and the bumps in the road caused it to bounce around in my hands. I COULD NOT STOP READING. Several times, I had to close the book, with my thumb keeping my page, press my forehead against the cover, and cry. Definitely one of my favorite books now.

I'm simply IN LOVE with the book, I'm about 2/3 done and the only reason I stopped was because of school. The story just weaves so many great things together and there are simply no words to really describe the awesomeness of the book. I agree it's original writing and it IS really fresh. Plus, it reallllly pulls emotions, I laughed hysterically, then was at the point of tears and just ah! So good!

I read this book way back around the time you made this review, and feel it not only deserves all the hype it gets but believe any negative attention it gets is unfounded and unjustifiable. All of it coming from ignorance. A lack of understanding, maturity and developmental growth which I find to be a perfect reflection of the deep psychological problems in todays society as a whole.
What surprised me most about this novel is how incredibly deep it is. It has far more in common with classic literature than most modern books you'll find on the NY Times best seller list. It's also one that serves as a great read for personal developmental and growth. There are countless lessons to be learned, while reading it, that will help in forming a strong moral compass. It provides many deep insights into personal human experiences, and emotions, like hardships, compassion, empathy, friendships, family, happiness, coming of age, exploration of life, anger, regret, loss, grief, and acceptance of things you cannot control. It's an extremely well written story and very moving from beginning to end. I really feel that everyone would benefit greatly by reading this one.
Thank you for reviewing it. Great job.

I bought this book on the day of the release the 10. of January and was so happy. But it was also the day I was told that my stepmom has breast cancer. So life is really an ironic bitch but I'm happy I bought the book, because it is helping me through it. Aaaand I am definitely falling in love with Augustus just as you fall asleep: slowly and then all at once.

Aaahh I adored this book so much, and while I was reading it, I was actually inspired to write some of my own philosophical prose (if anything written by a 17 year old can be considered philosophical). Anyway, excellent and accurate review, although I really want you to comment on some of the awesome details in this book. (There were so many!!)

My goodness TFIOS is fantastic. It's not just the story and the characters that make it so but the writing which is so fantastically brilliant and is definitely John's best yet. It was everything I expected and wanted it to be and so much more.

This is my favourite book of John's and It was a surprise to me because I don't usually finish books like this. I really thought about dropping it at page 261 but I'm glad I carried on because It's wonderful. Usually when I read his books I prefer the sidekicks to the main characters but in this book all the characters were perfect.

I just can´t like this book. To me was boring, very "look at me being sad, look at me being romantic, look at me being dramatic, look, look, don´t you dare don´t look" And the repetition of words, expression, things... that is not way to stablish your theme, that is a way of take your readers for not very smart people who need everyting spell out or they don´t get it. I despice books like that, doesn´t give me anything as a reader to actually think. In general try to hard to be romantic, doesn´t know very much about being subtle and was very rush, from the start to end. Except por the teenage in love factor, I don´t see the big deal about it. The character of Gus is a egotistic suicide (always wanting to have an important death, more important than everyone else, don´t want his life to have more meaning than the way he die), to good to be anything less than god awfull boring, Hazel have little personality beside her smartassiness and being sick, and Isaac is a walking cliché talking about "what true love really is". The father is always crying, the mother... is just a mother really, wich is not bad but neither is nothing new, and that it.
The message was good, don´t get me wrong, but the delivery was very poor, force and weak to me for work.

@Equestrian Gamer english may not be their first language as you can tell from the other grammar mistakes. what the commenter referred to by making the readers feel stupid is the way that hazel and gus try too hard to act smart by the way they speak and portray life trying to be "deep" even though that's not at all what a teenager, must less sick teenagers would act. isaac was too focused on love and sort of dry and was just a hint of the "third wheel comedic relief". his only personality trait was being blind and hating love. gus's metaphor with the cigarettes made me cringe. why would you make a metaphor into a physical thing unless its art? hes going to walk into a place that prohibits smoking and his dumb response is "Its a metaphor, you see." no one gives a damn about your dumb metaphor, you're basically 5 years old. the author tried too hard to make intelligent teenagers, but in reality, even intelligent teenagers dont act this way. I have a friend with a 4.4 GPA and she doesnt act all smart with everyone. but that's mostly why I hate the story.

Great review! I finished the book this morning, and I was an absolute mess of emotions. Really the sort of book that sticks with you too and stays in your head. Plot wise, it's quiet, with less of the wild escapades of some of the others. But it was so powerful, and the characters were so wonderful and endearing that I couldn't stop reading until I finished. Best Wishes!

i tried reading looking for alaska, out of curiosity, and i actually bought a paper back copy but ended up not finishing it, it was interesting in the first few pages but i got tired and stopped; that's why i didn't understand what was the hype about john green --- until i came across this one, i, and i'm sorry for doing this, but illegally downloaded a fault in our stars on ebook and fuckin' loved it, it was deep and relatable in my opinion even if i'm not terminally ill but seriously, the book is the right amount of youth and maturity, like me probably since i'm just, 20. i couldn't stop reading it even if it was the first time i read on my laptop and it wasn't a pleasant experience, but, well. I LOVED IT. will definitely buy an official copy of the book just because.
i'm scared to watch the film tho, might ruin it for me, the girl wasn't how i imagined her too be in the trailer so.... well, let's see.

My guess is that she's going to be in a play based on The Fault in Our Stars. Why would she otherwise have to learn to speak in a British accent (she'd play Kaitlyn). Maybe she got to read the book in December to write a script / get the feel of the book to be able to play her part. And a play would only be exciting for Dutch nerdfighers, since other people wouldn't be able to watch it (too long way to travel / not understanding the language). Just speculating :)

@SincerePraise Dutch accents usually aren't that strong when changing to English... and compulsory lessons...

I have never n my life heard another non American speaker (other than myself) who have completely eliminated there accent so awesome!!! I have worked on my English for as long as I can remember and I was constantly told what a miserable accent i had! so I became determent to be the best English speaker amongst my friends. I will have to say I had never been in the US up until recently. And my English is as good as any American, could you shear your story with me I would really like to hear it!
