    I would like to distinguish the fans of the book from the Nerdfighter community. Not all readers of John's books are Nerdfighters, but a lot of people in the community have read his books. I loved your review and honest opinions, and they are true. What I got from the book after reading it wasn't the love story. It's not about living as much as it is about death and handling the grief that comes along with it. It's about making what little time you have, with or without cancer, count, even if it is just one person. It's one of those books you read and, immediately after, go tell everyone you love that you love them. That's what I wish most people would take from the novel.

  • @accioxheart
    @accioxheart 11 лет назад +1

    I had a feeling that's how you would feel from previous book reviews, was still curious none the less! It's the one liners and the way John develops his characters that make me love him (and yes my love for the vlogbrothers is definitely a factor). Thanks for the videos Travis!

    I think you reviewed it well. You may not have completely enjoyed it but at least you did not bash it. I am in the process of reading this book. This book is good, I would recommend it to anybody. What I really don't understand is why mocking other community? They love this book then so what?? I really like this book, I think his writing style is very original, that's maybe because I didn't read a lot of books and oh! You are so much better than me.. This book is great, it just not good enough to fulfill anybody's big ego..

  • @KingBowserVlog
    @KingBowserVlog 10 лет назад

    I only read it because you said it wasn't a bad book, and I agree. I was expecting something very cheesy and teen-driven, but it really avoided being that (a little too hard at times). The problems that I had were that Hazel and Augustus were a bit *too* witty and that took away from their realism, I think. I also noticed Hazel (or John Green, if we're being technical) sometimes shoved awkward metaphors into the end of a paragraph. Almost the whole book is based on metaphors, but I'm talking about those specific end-paragraph metaphors. Also, I felt very off in that sudden ending, too, even though I was kind of expecting it. Overall, it's not a bad book by any means...

    Nerdfighteria isn't a cult, it's a community. Cults are religious groups that focus on a specific object or subject. Nerdfighters don't worship a specific object, they share their love for different nerdy stuff. If communities were to be misconstrued as cults, wouldn't the bookworm community be called a cult just because they all love books and talk about them?

    • @matthewduggan2680
      @matthewduggan2680 8 лет назад +2

      He didn't say it was a cult, he said it had a cult following. They're two completely different things. A cult following refers to a group of fans who are highly dedicated to a work of culture (eg. film, book, artist, sportsperson, etc.), which undeniably describes nerdfighteria accurately

    Well I liked the characters. Hazel really is a good person and Augustus is quirky. The book is about how they’ll spend their last months and with what kind of attitude. I’ve read a handful of books where the protagonist is dying but I enjoyed hazel and Gus more

    If all that you took away from this review is that he says the word "like" repeatedly to prove a point, you should discontinue watching book reviews.
    I felt as if "Like, whatever" filled in mental blanks that the author had between trying to portray a teenager and not dumb down his own lexicon. Even if a teenager has cancer, the likelihood of them understanding the proper usage of nihilism is very slim. Especially if they curse, or say "like" every other sentence that they speak.

    I read it before I found out about the vlogbrothers, and I thought it was a solid book for what it was. However, it's constantly compared to The Perks of Being A Wallflower (both being two of the most popular YA books at the moment) and personally I don't think it holds a candle to The Perks simply for it's lack of relate-ability. Most people experience freshman year, significantly less are dying of cancer. Still love John, his books, and Nerdfighteria, but TFiOS isn't the Bible of YA fiction.

    i am like reading the book like right now like currently and i like like it allot like its very like good. i love this book so for but the likes are annoying indeed and i like dislike that fact that there are many like's in this book but overal like so far like good like like very good. the writing is okay, aside from all the like's.
    i would now not already tell my score because i am still reading it, i might come back to this and edit this comment afterwards.
    *EDIT*
    i just had finished the book and i would give it 4/5 or 8/10
    its a good book but Its a little sad at the ending and an easy read. only real petpeeve i had with this book was the "like" stuff. realy annoying. and it was indeed somewhat predictable but otherwise a great book. very quick read and easy for people who doesn't read allot.

    This review made me crack up in some places.
    About the book: I very much liked Augustus. It wasn't a bad read, but nope, it did not tromp my (only) favorite book ever (Lament, by Maggie Stiefvater) and it didn't even become my possible second (that position goes to Paper Valentine, by Brenna Yovanoff).
    It's not a book I would read again, because it didn't leave that much of an impression on me. I'd have to say that my favorite John Green book that I've read is Will Greyson Will Greyson.

    I must say, I wasn't impressed with The Fault in Our Stars. John Green is my favorite author and have read his other 3 books (LFA, AAK, PT) and loved them. I love the plot of the conflicted female who's fairly mysterious and the male feels he has to fix her, or solve her. Loooove those kinds of books, but TFIOS was just not for me. Unfortunately, I couldn't bring myself to finish it. And I think the public and society ruined it for me, partly. Because this book was so hyped about, I expected more from John, but was disappointed when it was an unrealistic book (in my opinion). I am glad that John got the publicity he deserved, though, because TFIOS influenced me to read the other 3, that are my favorite books of all time. I may have a different opinion, but please don't try and change it to yours. sorry just wanted to say my opinion! :) hbu?
