A friend of mine mentioned he said that the job market for self-employment there's a lot of money to be made in Oraville area I wonder if that's true or not
I have lived in Chico for around 50 years. I grew up here, and I have run a business here for over 20 years. But I have never thought about moving more than I do now. The crime and homeless problem in Chico and all of California has skyrocketed in the last 5 to 10 years. Chico is trying to do their very best to address the homeless problem, but they have been slapped with a lawsuit that prevents them from moving the homeless or asking the unhoused to move along, even if they are camped right in front of your home. The fires of recent years have been numerous, and the summer air in Chico can be full of smoke for days or even weeks. The rules and regulations in my industry keep changing in California and it is more challenging now to perform the work I do than it was when I started my business in 2001. The older I get, I find some summer days can be downright unbearable. It can be over 100 on many days, and sometimes that brings with it some humidity. Nothing like the South East, but I have a hard time working outside anymore, and 90% of my work is outside.
Nevada County native, CSUC graduate from the '80s here. The entire state is overrun with homeless now, much of it due to drug addiction and untreated mental health issues the state refuses to address. I ran a business for 16 years in Grass Valley and would never start another one in CA. Decades of corrupt government, over-regulation and Progressive infatuation with social engineering in lieu of basic infrastructure spending has left the state with droughts, floods, fires, and a pension system due to implode in the next decade or so. If you figure out where to move, let me know!
We definitely have our issues that need to be addressed, I agree with you 100%. However, I don't believe the problems and frustrations we face here are unique to Chico. I think it's more of a California issue as a whole. Butte County has so much to offer, even in spite of the downsides. Owning a business in California is most certainly challenging and has become more so over the past decade or so! How do we change that to make it more business friendly again?
I would agree that every town or city has it's good points and its issues that need fixing. Chico is no exception. But there's so much good here and so many things to be involved in if you choose that I think it's a great place to live, raise a family, or retire! It is what you make it, I agree!
The negs are these for some. Heat is in summer is bad, here especially if you have autoimmune disorder. Fire survivor of 2008, and 2018, 2021. Bad for respiratory issues with fires and asthma! Homeless encampments keep getting moved and coming back. Taxes too.
I live in Willows California your 💯 about the summers here I absolutely hate it Lol I've lived here in Northern California my entire life 49 year's and I always go to Big Al's in Chico when I'm in town 👍 👍
I went to Chico State in the 1970's and I do remember those hot summers. I live in Canada now but I still miss Chico. I would move back in a heart beat if I could. s
It's great to hear that Chico left such a positive impression on you. If you ever find yourself back in the area, even for a visit, it might bring back some of those wonderful memories. In the meantime, you can always reminisce about the good times you had there. Thanks for sharing!
I've lived in chico for twenty-one years. It's a pleasant enough place but I am seriously thinking about moving. The two major factors in this dissatisfaction medical care and the norms of social interaction. Reimbursements to doctors and hospitals are loweer in "rural" areas and that is the case here. Thus there are not enough physicians. Many specialties are not represented at all. Many people here go down to Sacramento, San Francisco, and Stanford for even relatively routine medical procedures. In my experience, people in Chico are polite and pleasant. This is better than rude and unpleasant but does not necessarily translat to friendly, or engaging, or interested. If you have a strong built-in social network you may not notice but making new friends here can be very difficult.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts with us! I have not found it difficult to make new friends, so thats a new one for me to consider. Chico certainly has a lot of clubs and activities available that may have likeminded people, making that a bit easier for those that get involved? But I do agree that healthcare specialties are better found in areas like Sacramento or Redding as providers here are fewer than bigger cities making it a longer wait to be seen. And depending on what you’re going in for you may find higher skilled practitioners in those areas as well. Thanks for the great comment, lots to think about!
While fire insurance is definitely a concern for homeowners in California, Mercury and Bamboo are still writing comprehensive policies that are more affordable than most. There's also other options and things to know about insurance I'd be happy to share with you any time!
Don’t move to Magalia Ca, just up the mountain from Chico unless you like to listen to loud motor cycles & loud cars. Some of the ppl think it’s the Wild West. Gun shots are often heard.🙉 there is very little police protection tho good emergency services🥰
Thank you for sharing your experience and concerns about living in Magalia, California. Safety and noise levels can vary significantly from one area to another, so your insights could be helpful to others considering a move to the area. If you have any specific questions or would like more information, feel free to ask, and I'll do my best to assist you.
We moved from San Diego to Chico, back in '88. Had an older apartment (but nice) $400 a month. Back then, Chico had actual good paying jobs, industry jobs. Back then Chico was a great place to live. In 2015, we couldn't stand Chico any longer, we moved to Live Oak.
Chico is a great place to live there is heat and there's also a crime crime is everywhere, the only reason not to move to Chico is because a lot of people from Chico don't want you here it's nice to have a quiet quaint town the more people it makes it worse so stay where you're at we have enough people here
I'm sorry to hear that you have felt that way. It's been my experience that Chico locals have been very welcoming to our families we've helped move into the area. In my opinion, Chico is a great place to live and I agree it's "quaint". Love the description!

I lived all my life in the bay area, and ready to retire. looking for a peaceful town, good simple people, and good weather. I don’t like the cold. 😊 Any suggestions?
Not looking for an argument, just relating my personal opinion. I used to live in Chico (82 to 87) and it was a good place to be. But what I have seen every time I go up to visit is the politics are moving more and more right wing. If that's what you like, this is the place for you. It is not for me anymore. Had considered retiring to someplace cooler and quieter like Chester, but with the fire situation not likely to improve any time soon (and the political drift of all inland California) it's not going to happen.
