    One of those facts that don't fail to amaze me is the fact that Abebe Bikila set a record in Rome 1960 Olympics by running 2:15:16.2 barefoot, rather than wearing new shoes, which were causing him blisters. Four years later, wearing shoes probably way worse than those 1974 Nikes, he shaved 3 minutes off that time. I just keep wondering what he'd do if he had Alphaflys back then

    • @keneticchannel
      @keneticchannel 19 дней назад +3

      And don't forget that part of the marathon course he ran barefoot was COBBLESTONE. Sheeeeesh, man.
      I think the Alphaflys would weird him out a little -- especially the raised heels. When you're used to running in zero drop, which pretty much all running shoes were at that time (I think?), it would probably throw off his perfectly dialed and efficient technique.

      I think many folks are wearing super shoes for the injury preventing cushioning. I have a pair of NB SuperComp Elite v.4s exclusively to keep my knees safe for long runs.
      Personally, I couldn't care less about speed; I just enjoy the miles. The SuperComps have made my recovery a solid 50% faster, I'd say. Runs that would previously leave me sore the next day are a cakewalk now. I'll forever be buying highly cushioned shoes because the anxiety of the possibility of injury is greatly reduced. As a result, my runs have been so much more enjoyable since getting them.

    I was watching something a while ago that you sorta talk about. Running technique. I have the Nike free run Flyknit 2018s I think, and I was running in those about a full year now, until I got NB rebel 4s. I thought the new shoes where much better as I was having much better recoveries and no shin splints. But I did notice my running form was different. I missed the Nikes due to minimalism. I ran the most I had ever run in either shoe and I ran quickly and at a fast pace. I'm still learning but I think I am buying this whole train your feet and legs to run vs. just getting a better shoe. Because the shoe can hide inefficiency in your running and bad habits I feel like. Granted don't kill your legs!

    Great and very interesting video, thank you Goran! What I'm taking is that maybe getting used to old/minimalistic shoes (through running and strenght&conditioning) would be ideal because your feet and joints will get stronger (in training what counts is intensity not speed: that is a consequence, although it looks good on Strava); then, switch to modern and faster shoes for races and reap the benefits :)

      @@io-rj6sk Less feedback from all that cushion "allowing" one to be less gentle with one's feet.
      Running barefoot on asphalt forces a low impact running style. The feedback loop is very immediate. Downsides are, for far and away most: It's slower, Longer ground contact, less "leg stiffness", compared to running in well fitting purpose built shoes.
      Whereas stomping away on 40mm of bouncy foam while using a carbon plate as a springboard, allows for higher ground contact forces, landing on stiffer legs etc., without being immediately corrected by pain.
      But those higher ground forces are ultimately still transmitted through the foot sole/fascia. Which is designed to absorb landing impacts by flattening out and elongating. Being tasked with doing that quicker and more forcefully, may need a somewhat lengthy adaption. In the meantime, it can get sore and painful.

    There has always been one thing I do not fully understand about plated supershoes. The carbon plate acts as some kind of spring. How can it be that there is only one type of shoe. I mean all plates are the same in that particular kind of shoe and so is the midsole material(s) and in the case of Nike's Alphafly the pods. In my mind there should be an optimum weight for the runner for the shoe to perform at its best. Like in a car. If you put the suspension of a mini under a tesla it won't perform at all right? And this apart from how and where you land in your running stride. And lastly, should there not be a difference between an 65kg runner with a smaller foot size compared to a 65kg runner with a larger foot size? Does a larger carbon plate act different?

    • @AndersGustafsson87
      @AndersGustafsson87 19 дней назад +1

      I wondered this aswell... Not only weight but general size of the person will determine their "natural occilation frequency" (cadence) and how the optimal plate should behave bounce wise, right?

    • @bigk1ck
      @bigk1ck 19 дней назад

      I believe that these “super shoes” were developed to cater for running enthusiasts and pros with certain average running pace and race body weight in mind. There have been many videos/tests showing that if you’re a slower runner you will not see much benefit from using these plated shoes. I believe that would be the case also if you have a slower cadence or outside of certain body weight (too heavy/too light).
      But I think what matters more for consumers is how these shoes make them feel when running. If they feel like they run faster, easier, with less effort, then people will buy them, regardless if they actually make them faster or not.

    • @Dailydivefix
      @Dailydivefix 19 дней назад

      The way I understand it, it’s the foam that changes things and brings the benefits and bounce. But on its own the foam is too soft to run on, so the carbon plate or rods are added for stability. So the foam is the spring and the plate is the stabiliser. But yes, the weight of the runner will still undoubtedly change the dynamics.

    • @MrSeedi76
      @MrSeedi76 19 дней назад

      Heavy runner here (88 kg) - I can't run in shoes that are too soft as I sink in too much and the cushioning becomes pretty useless. I once tried the NB fresh foam X 840 and my feet never hurt worse after a 10k. I returned them the next day as they were also very bad quality and some plastic parts stuck out of the tongue.
      The shoes that worked for me so far were, Brooks Ghost Max (but the stack height is crazy on these), Adidas Ultraboost 22, Asics J33, Brooks Divide 4.
      Unfortunately I never found a Hoka so far that fit my feet. I seem to always be between sizes on those.
      Never tried a plated shoe however as I don't train to run fast. I just run to get the blood flowing and lose weight.

    I'm curious what the comparison would look like for a low cost but still modern running shoe compared with the vaporfly. Also, for the heartrate test at the end, I think a proper test would be to do that again but switch the order. HR does go up over the course of a run, so switching the order would confirm that it's actually the shoe that gives a lower HR. Also, is it possible stress had something to do with it? If you don't like the feel of the old shoes, that could increase your HR just because it's different and you're not used to it.

      "I'm curious what the comparison would look like for a low cost but still modern running shoe compared with the vaporfly. "
      The problem is you can have: 1)Lots of cushioning, 2)Light weight and 2)A decent price. But only two at a time.....
      Some extra weight is probably not a huge deal for longer-distance (10K+) for us slower folk. (Heck, being primarily a trail runner not concerned about shaving a few minutes off asphalt race times from weird shoes alone, I'd pick Kayanos for a Marathon over wobbly Alphaflys...) But Goran ran 3:40 here, at which point weight differences at the end of those long legs starts being significant. To where it would be hard to attribute any gains to, say, anything other than just weight. The way he did the test, probably largely held weight between the pairs close to constant. Such that any differences would be from shape/construction/"technology"/rebound alone, not just weight reduction.

  • @SanderBessels
    @SanderBessels 19 дней назад +9

    In training, you can choose more minimalistic shoes if you want to increase the intensity, for instance when running with a friend that is a little less fit.
    Training on minimalistic shoes or even barefoot is really good for your running form: higher cadence, more forefoot strike and in my experience also a slightly shorter ground contact time (this contradicts the finding in this video).
    Good shoes do compensate bad technique very well, so I guess the less experienced you are, the more you will benefit from super shoes. But you also benefit more from working on a better running form…
    It’s also fun to run with barefoot, but that’s personal :).

    One question I've been thinking about for a while now with these new plated supershoes. Does running with them give the same morphological adaptations long term to the feet & soleus? In theory, training with shoes that work less for you, your body should adapt more.

    • @keneticchannel

      I could see the shoes decreasing it among elites that already have good technique, but increasing it amongst newer runners. The lack of proprioception from immensely cushioned shoes can wreak havoc on a newer runner's ability to properly dial in efficient technique, resulting in injuries ranging from runner's knee, IT band syndrome to plantar fasciitis and beyond. Super shoes should come after the form work is there. No dessert without your protein! 😆

      I just upgraded from Kinvara 13s to a super shoe. The Kinvaras are amazing. I really enjoyed them. I put over 1,000km on mine before replacing them. The main difference between the two is mostly the cushioning. I was having some soreness after any runs over 10k with the Kinvaras as I run a bit slow (typically around 6min/km with a light heel strike). Now with a pair of NB SC Elite V.4s the equivalent amount of knee strain comes on closer to 20km.

    Yes, super shoes will give folks with amazing technique a competitive advantage over their peers with similarly great form. But too many folks feel like they can skip technique development and pay for faster times in the form of shoes, only to wind up with runner's knee and plantar fasciitis because their super shoes muffle the proprioception required to help them develop efficient technique. Most would be better served by saving their money and doing more barefoot running in the park to dial in their technique.

      As I talk about in the video I switch shoes between each interval and the data shows that every time I switch to the alphaflies the heart rate significantly drops as I talk about in the video. For the running form test it's just 5min of running at a pretty comfortable pace with long rest before the second test so I'm sure that fatigue didn't affect my running stride for the second test. It's not a rigged test I clearly present what I do and what the results were, then you can do what you want with the information.

    The only thing that makes the new shoes fast is because they're lightweight. 1970s shoes were heavy made with leather uppers. Nike Streakfly 7 was Nikes last non super shoe for marathon and it's heavier than the supershoes, whilst also being softer leaking energy. Those elite runners could run a 2:01 in barefoot shoes if the weight is light.

      Nate, I've raced, and currently run, in everything from 1976 waffle trainers to 2024 Alpha-Flys and Vapor-Flys. (63 years old, never under the knife, competitive cyclist now). These super-shoes are much more than "light". The carbon plate is a PED (DEVISE). also, the 40/50mm stack transfers a lot of stress away my old tender calves/shins (compartmental syndrome) and into the hips/quads/hammies, a strong point of my body. I don't run mega-miles so this hasn't created a "different" problem and the relief is not from light-weight, it's a mechanical shift.

    As someone that started running back in the 80s as a kid (mostly track and field), the biggest changes were not only the shoe tech. It was a complete paradigm shift in terms of biomechanics, stride technic and cadence. I remember back then, for mid and longer distances, the cadence was high, shorter strides and the posture was slightly forward to land on the ball of the foot. The focus was on running technique, breathing from the nose while keeping a steady relaxed rhythm and pacing accordingly. One was even encouraged to keep a proper weight/height ratio depending of the type of racing you were training for. Now people is obsessed with their apps input, work very little on technique, breathing or proper pacing. Most of the people I've trained with (that run ultras) have several chronic injuries, bad form, even worst diets, are heavy mouth breathers and even get offended by any mention of weight/height ratios. Running now is mostly a gear selling cash grab, not that much about health or athleticism.

    Hey Goran, really interesting video as always. However, super shoes are perhaps creating a generation of "weaker" runners. Studies are showing more and more that injuries are in fact increasing when using these shoes a lot. Weaker tendons and lower bone density are more profound....there is a lot to learn from our ancestors who ran for days barefoot.
