What's incredible here is that the Swedes were able to see past this, there was no "tall poppy syndrome", and they seemingly embraced this new musical entity comprised of such big but disparate stars... for a time anyway. Until, with their own hard work and tenacity, they became big elsewhere, and it was then that their music was viewed, locally, with scepticism, they were accused of commerciality and selling out, even to their faces in one infamous interview which the girls walked out on. Rewind to the experience here, winning the Swedish heats, and this was no guarantee of anything. The Eurovision final was still to come, and the song's, and ABBA's, future were far from certain.
It’s really funny to see how unpretentious all of that was. An envelope with a rather small amount of money, a few flowers, a few words and that’s basically it - the beginning of the an absolutely unbelievable career. Who would have though in 1974?
